Next up in our series of Burning Questions, we take a look at what’s on offer at the Emirates. Arsenal’s first season without Robin Van Persie started tentatively but as the raft of summer signings started to gel and develop an understanding, the Gunners finished the campaign superbly, with eight wins and two draws in their final 10 fixtures.

The only side in the league to feature four players with 10 or more goals in 2012/13 (Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski), Arsene Wenger’s side were also impressive at the back and conceded just 37 times – the second most resilient backline in the top-flight. With strong options available right throughout the first XI, our site contributors have plenty to mull over…

Tinkerman says…
I think it’s going to be pretty hard to look past Theo Walcott. The fact that he scored only 11 points less than Santi Cazorla last season despite playing over 1,000 fewer minutes suggests he has the potential to outshine all of his team-mates on the Fantasy front, if, as widely expected, he is handed an increased amount of game time.

Many forward thinking managers have been quick to point to Cazorla’s superior cumulative score under the new Bonus Points System (BPS) in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, but I personally don’t think this will play a huge role in deciding who produces the most Fantasy points, since Walcott’s superior rate of goals and assists per game should see him outscore the Spaniard.

Others will also point towards Olivier Giroud benefitting from the lack of a new signing in the striking department but, despite the glut of chances he had last season, the Frenchman has yet to prove he has the class to start scoring more regularly for Arsenal. Also, a likely new signing in this area would surely hurt Giroud’s game time enough to make him unworthy of consideration.

In Tommy We Trust says…
Oliver Giroud. The mercurial Frenchman had a somewhat up and down debut season with several double digit Gameweek performances as well as some that drove Fantasy managers wild with frustration. His stats were very handy, though, and far better than the output in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – for example, his β€œChances per Minute” pace was quicker than the benchmark that is Robin Van Persie over the whole season.

So what needs to change for Giroud to become the Fantasy Football monster, hoovering up points like a Dyson? One reason could be his confidence level; something the Arsenal front man has said affects his game. Well if he isn’t confident after his pre-season performances (seven goals so far), then he requires some counselling.

Giroud’s all-round game is another reason why I believe he can be a force. He has an accomplished first touch, good movement and is good in the air – all traits required to be successful in the Premier League. There is also Arsene Wenger to consider in this argument. One of the Arsenal’s manager’s best traits is the ability to improve a player by weaving his magic over a seemingly average prospect with slight changes to the player’s game. For Giroud, this is getting him to play further up the pitch and refrain from dropping deeper to link up play. For the members among us, run a comparison between his first 19 games and the subsequent 19 – it will highlight a lot of interesting stats but his average position map is the one that interests me the most.

Lastly, the Premier League is full of foreign stars that produce in their second season and beyond. I am predicting Giroud will the next in this long list.

Applebonkers says…..
As it stands, it’s the duo I call “the Bayern bookends” – that’s the two guys who scored in Arsenal’s win in the Allianz Arena last season, Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud. Koscielny is vital to fuse together the Gunners clean sheet potential; he covers for Per Mertesacker’s flaws whilst Vermaelen would too often expose them.

At the other end, Giroud did have a reputation as a bit of a Gallic galoot at times last season but he has the potential to bring Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere into the game more than other strikers (including previous target Gonzalo Higuain) can. It’s also worth noting Giroud has exactly the same first full campaign as Luis Suarez did (according to Opta, at least), with 11 goals and three assists accrued. An FPL price of 8.5 for the centre-forward in a high-scoring team with a history of second-season blossoming? Serious potential.

Mark says…
I’ll happily pin my colours to the mast: Walcott is in every one of my Fantasy game squads right now. For me, he’s that “essential”. Arsenal have been handed a β€œkind” opening to the season and Walcott is a player who is, potentially, still β€œon the rise”.

His progress last season in terms of goalscoring was there for all to see and I’ll give you a stat for free – Walcott was involved (scored or assisted) in 44% of Arsenal’s goals last term (when on the pitch), compared to 27.6% in 2011/12. That demonstrates both his progress and his importance to the Arsenal cause. Arsene Wenger’s side won’t face a top six side away from the Emirates until Gameweek 11 and, before that, encounter just Spurs and Liverpool at home. I’m anticipating a strong start, a good few goals and profit from Walcott.

Do I look to double up? Perhaps. There’s no doubt that Santi Carzorla is the other quality acquisition. In the Sun Dream Team and Sky Sports, I’m certainly considering swooping for the pair – encouraged by the Spaniard’s propensity to pick up supplementary points (Man of the Match and Star Man). In the Fantasy Premier League, I’m far more cautious. Budget restrictions are pointing me elsewhere, perhaps even to Olivier Girioud.

If you put any stock in pre-season form, Giroud is a hot ticket. Much maligned in his first season, Giroud did not hide. He was well fed, had plenty of efforts on goal and was a β€œpresence” when on the pitch. While he failed to translate that to strong returns, I’ve little doubt that we’ll see an improvement this season if he is given a platform to perform. Based on his summer, Grioud could start the season leading an Arsenal attack and fed by Walcott and Cazorla; that’s enough for me to take his claims for a place in my attack seriously.

As for the defence – again, there was improvement on show here: the Gunners ended the season conceding just five goals in their last eight Gameweeks with Laurent Koscielny, in particular, outstanding. It’s going to take 5.5 in the FPL to draft in a secure members of Wenger’s defence but, given their schedule, once again it’s a route I have to consider. With question marks over starters and rotation in the United and City defence, the Gunners looks a sound investment for those happy to spend on a defender or two.

Nate - your bitterness and poor attitude have just about destroyed any chance you had of being accepted for season 4. granted you have a few months to turn your image around but just know that we won't forget this when considering your application in December.

so I would suggest that you try to contribute positively on the boards and become a mainstay on this site and put yourself in a good position for season 4

and just so you know, every single person who was accepted was a newbie around these parts at one point or another. many of those who were accepted to season 3 either weren't around or were rejected from season 1 or 2 but have since become more active on this site and which warranted their acceptance. not to mention there were a fair number of regulars who didn't make the cut either. over 100 people didn't make it so understand that you weren't the only one and that the the competition for those places was very high

    hope you understand

        1) you were not selected because more than 120 people were ranked ahead of you. even if these couple people who you believe should not have been accepted (i have no clue who you're referring to by the way but that's not important) there were enough others below them that would have been selected before you.

your whining, complaining, disrespect, and poor attitude have gone on to justify our decision. in no way does your conduct tonight demonstrate any potential for positive contribution

You're opening a can of worms here but I'll bite.

To answer your question, they're literally changing how the 3, 2, and 1 BPs are worked out. To know the full extent of it, GW1 would probably give the most accurate information. Until then, just hang tight and don't worry about it too much.

Ravel Morrison data is in there under "Match Stats" tab. However, goal involvement has been filtered by >150mins only.

But you can grab his data and paste in excel from "Match Stats".

I have used the stats from:
    http://www.whoscored.com/Matches/713513/LiveStatistics/England-Community-Shield-2012-2013-Manchester-United-Wigan

and calculated the BAPS distribution for Man Utd vs Wigan

    The stats missing are:
    1. Recovered Balls (+1 for every 8)
    2. Missing a big chance (-1 for every 1)

Based on the other stats the ManUtd players' ppi who have played more than 60 mins are given below:

    De Gea 6
    Vidic 7
    Jones 6
    Evra 12
    Smalling 8
    Carrick 6
    Giggs 4
    Cleverley 7
    Zaha 2
    RVP 19
    Welbeck 10

Therfore the BAPS would be: RVP 3, Evra 2, Welbeck 1 (subjected to error)

    |Soldado - An FPL Gem?|

Tottenham new boy Soldado has sparked a large amount of interest from fantasy owners, here are a few facts about the Spaniard to give you some extra in site into this FPL prospect:

Soldado scored 30 goals last season in all competitions, one every 122 minutes - a better strike rate than Gonzalo Higuain.

Soldado had exactly 100 shots in La Liga last season, compared to Emmanuel Adebayor's 48 in the Premier League for Tottenham.

He has scored more than 20 goals in La Liga in all of his three seasons at Valencia, four in a row if including his haul for Getafe the year before.

Like Manchester City new boy Alvaro Negredo, Soldado actually began his career at Real Madrid, but left in search of regular football after failing to establish himself as a regular in the midst of the Galactico era.

Soldado does his defensive duties too - He made 40 clearances last season- mostly from set pieces, in comparison to 15 from Emmanuel Adebayor and just three from Jermain Defoe.

Soldado is the fourth player his agent has moved from La Liga to the Premier League this summer, following Fulham's Fernando Amorebieta, Everton's Gerard Deulofeu (loan) and Stoke's Marc Muniesa.

His highest goal haul came in 2011 when he scored all four goals for Valencia in a 4-2 win against former club Getafe.

He also has two Champions League hat-tricks on his CV, scored past BATE Borisov and Genk.

Soldado has been sent off three times in his career, but not since early 2009.

Thanks guys. If a player has started the game (date at the top) he gets a 3, if he was subbed on he gets a 1.

Re: Doos, I've seen your West Ham sheet - if only we had one for every team! Great work πŸ™‚

There's bound to be a couple of errors, but it was nice to see that pre-season hero 'A Trialist' turn up on Palace's official website so I'm not the only one who's not infallible!

No, no, no - it is a great piece of work. But a 45 minute start does not merit a 3, imo.

Also, there needs to be some sort of weighting for the later matches, imo.

I am engaged on Hull, at the mo. Someone may well do Southampton ...

I agree with you to a point Doos - if that kind of minutes information was available for every game we'd have a very clear indication but as it stands I've had to go with the lowest common denominator. My rank history will tell you I need all the help I can get!

Hmm, its a useful analysis. Although some of those starts and sub appearances might have has something to do with injuries to others such as the Jenkinson, Sagna situation.

Don't understand the Beneteke punt unless you are planning to wildcard. Chances are you will have to dump him for a 4pt hit if you have 3 Chelsea players. I doubt Benteke - 4 with three hard fixtures is much better than Sturridge with two decent fixtures + you will need to jump on bandwagons.

Sturridge might not play and has no match fitness or form whatsoever.

Tekkers has scored 7 goals (I think) pre season and is 100% nailed on with a DGW, I fancy him to score 3 goals (ok maybe 2 and an assist πŸ˜‰ ) over the three matches. Plus it gives me a chance to evaluate Sturridge vs Giroud vs Bony vs Berbs a bit more πŸ™‚

There's no FF category for looking good. He didn't score against the second team of the Scottish champions. The Scottish league is ranked well below the PL. Sturridge isn't matchfit, Benteke is well match it after a very good preseason.

It's true. 1 goal in 10 games against the big 5. But i'd like to think it was more of an anomaly. Can't see him repeating the feat this season, he's only going to get better and better.

It is the case, but it's over such a small sample of games that I take no notice of it. There are enough dodgy defending players in both Arsenal and Chelsea for him to take advantage of. And then he has Liverpool coming up, a team he did extraordinarily well against last season if we insist on looking at things that way.

Look at the potential upside of someone who managed 19 goals in his debut season in a double gameweek - I think it's way too big to pass up on

Probably the kind of job for Mathmo but aren't most players' records worse against the big teams, because they have better defences? All the more if you play for a smaller team.

      posted this earlier...

"Only injury, suspension or a serious loss of form will make me think otherwise [that he's a season keeper]

How many other forwards have the following:

      1) Focal point of attack in an attack focussed side
      2) On penalties
      3) Never rotated (no other big name competing for minutes)
      4) Guaranteed starter (no European priorities to rest him for)
      5) Good fitness record
      6) Proven [PL] goalscorer
      7) Fixture proof (scores against big sides)"

Surely, other than RVP, Benteke is the least 'punty' of all the forwards.

Doesn't matter who he's against, he is equally likely to score.

Other options: Negredo/Dzeko/Jovetic/Lukaku/Ba/Torres (starter?) Bony/Soldado/RVW (Proven?) Sturridge/Rooney/Aguero (fitness)... I'd only consider Lambert and RVP as safer bets even over GW 1-3

The point i wish to illustrate is this:

In the first 3 gameweeks he has 3 tough fixtures. The difficulty of those fixtures makes little difference to his attacking potential, however, he is fit, in form and guaranteed those minutes. There is little point selling him to bring him back after GW3, but would you really rather start without?

On the other hand, you go with a budget player (Anelka/JRod), an actual punt and need 2 transfers or a WC to get him in GW4: This is a real gamble.
Or you could go with a player with no certain amount of game time or PL pedigree, hoping they get the chance and do well. If they don't, value drops and Benteke might not fit, if they do well, Benteke with his season long nailed-on-ness then becomes a headache while you chance it from week to week with anyone other than a settled Bony/Soldado or fit Sturridge.

of course you'd be raving about how great it is if you'd be accepted πŸ˜‰

there were 223 applicants for just 120 spots, so it was inevitable that some would miss out. sorry mate. become a more frequent poster around here and you'll have a very good shot to get accepted for season 4 in December.

also i've got an idea for another competition that i'll try to start prep for after the leagues get going which all those who applied for the leagues would be given a spot (assuming the other lads on the council like my idea)

"NAILED ON" - Many people ask about and many more use the phrase nailed on. This is used normally either for a guaranteed starter GW1 or as a long term reference to a sure thing and I just wanted to clarify what my belief of the phrase and the players involved for the discussion from the top 8 teams in the long term not just for GW1.

For me being nailed on does not mean simply that they are 1st choice, it means that they will be selected every single week and play the 80+ mins. Being "1st Choice" only can actually be a disadvantage in pure FPL term as with top teams involved in multiple competitions it means they have the potential get picked for the tough matches and then rested for the easy ones!

I only want to focus on attacking players for now and so IMO here are the top 8 teams from last season:

Man U - RVP! Thats it for now, positions up for grabs but most likely still all others will be rotated. (Carrick is the exception in the midfield but not an attacking/FPL player)
Man C - NO ONE! Silva and Aguero are first choice but will be rotated regardless of form due to the depth of the squad at Pele's disposal. (again Y.Toure is nailed but no longer an attacking player)
Chelsea - NO ONE, more contentious but the same situation as at city. Hazard and Mata are 1st Choice but with such a great squad all attacking players will come in and out and Jose likes his maverick subs too so even a starting 1st choice can come off early in a match.
Arsenal - Wally + Caz. Giroud has the potential to become nailed if his form comes good but he isn't there yet.
Spurs - Soldado + Lennon. Again there are a place or two that could be filled by the likes of Siggy or Chadli but we don't know that. (Obviously Bale will be too if he stays)
Liverpool - Sturridge + Gerrard + Coutinho (again Suarez will be if he stays and after he apologises!)
Everton - Mirallas + Pienaar. One of the two strikers has the chance to nail down a spot as Martinez typically doesn't rotate up front but we don't know who that is yet. (Fellaini no longer an attacking player)

When I look at my team and think about whether or not I have the flexibility to include a punt or two its important to make sure my surrounding players really are nailed on so I hope this helps some.

PS - feel very free to disagree away, I only support one of the above teams!

If Podolski and Wally hadn't started at the weekend I may agree on Giroud and I am still building in at the back of my brain that Wenger is gonna go shopping.

I think Jovetic and Navas will steal some of Silva's minutes myself.

Siggy and a.n.other have the potential like some Man U options to nail down spots but I don't think they have yet.

I always pick him up in my drafted league as he never gets picked early but always has a level of performance......but every season I think he will have a breakout season and just hasn't yet and I don't think its because his style doesn't suit FPL like the Modric's of this world.

      Lennon nailed on, really?

This is a great discussion point really, I completely agree on most points.

      I would add a couple:

Wilshere is nailed on if he is fit
Sturridge is only nailed on if he stays fit, which he finds difficult
At Spurs I thought only Soldado, if Bale leaves with no one else coming in. Are you a Spurs fan?
After 6 weeks at Chelsea and City we might see someone emerged as truly nailed on, so wait and see

Lennon played 2823 mins last season and had injuries. If he is fit then he gets picked every time, rightfully or not!

I don't count Wilshire as a strong FPL player but I would agree he is nailed.

No one is nailed if they get injured lol, but obviously some nailed players are more injury prone than others but BR will field a second string in LC and has no europe so he should stay fitter easier. I'm a Liverpool fan FYI.

I really don't think we will at City and Chelsea, way too many options and even on form with all the competitions if they both stay in Europe then the squad will get game time I believe.

Lukaku or Lampard can start one game and still get double digit scores.

Ivan is also not guaranteed both.

Then why do I have to limit myself to a DGWer? I could get anyone from all 20 teams who I think will get a big score in the first game. Perhaps I should get Dzeko, he is capable of a double digit score in one game too.

Yes, but at the moment Migs and Kosc look way more secure than Szczesney and Toure.

Szszesney + 4m is risky IMO given that he has been dropped before.

Just my two cents on Rvp after his performance today and goals. For what it's worth, his goals were all he contributed really to the game- he was not particularly influential, and the second goal particularly was very lucky:

Nobody is doubting that he is a superb player and possibly the best in the league. If he was ten million, we'd all be all over him. However, the fact remains that he costs 14 million- approximately a seventh/ eighth of your budget.

If we put that in perspective, choices you make if you have Rvp- you've nearly finished your team and have 22.5 million for one def, mid and fwd.
    A) Rvp+Lucas+brayford
    B) benteke+mirallas+ agger

That is of course a warped example, but I think Rvp has a long way to go to justify his price tag- at 14 million you're really expecting attacking returns every week- that's not unlikely, that's impossible.

Yes I'm biased as I'm strongly against choosing him. By all means show me this post when he's banged in 30 odd goals this season, at that point, I'll show you berbatov's and hooper's scores combined. Eek.

Go with rvp and sacrifice the rest of your team. Option to downgrade but doing that means having to make numerous transfers to get your team to look good.

Go without rvp and risk his big points haul and rely on the numerous other big hitters to get the job done.

      I am currently rvp less

        what about the Rat?

So, you think I should downgrade Jarvis to Ravel in order to fund an upgrade?

would you take Reid or the Rat?

also got 0.5 free, thinking about upgrading either Kim to a 5.5 or Brayford to a 4.5 (or even Kos to a 6.0 though I like Kos)

I see, but there is no way to judge how the Rat will perform.

Matej Vydra has passed his medical at West Brom and the club hope to complete a season-long loan deal tomorrow.

WBA also returned to the negotiating table this weekend to discuss terms with Man City over the release of Scott Sinclair.

Raphael Honigstein said this evening that Bayern Munich expect Luiz Gustavo to join Arsenal, although Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated today that the player has not decided yet whether he wants to move to London. VfL Wolfsburg are also very keen to recruit the player.

If Gustavo does want to join Arsenal, the only thing that remains to be agreed is personal terms, as the transfer fee has effectively been agreed (and no, I don't know what the fee is).

Yes, very much so. Luiz Gustavo was displaced as defensive midfielder in the Bayern line-up by Javi Martínez, and while he's not in the same class as the latter, I always thought he was an underrated member of the Bayern squad.

Luiz Gustavo never quite reproduced his Hoffenheim form, but probably didn't get enough chance to settle at Bayern. Would be a good signing for Arsenal.

Bayern are now claiming that the price for Luiz Gustavo would be €20 million. But again, the player has made no decision as yet.
