Next up in our series of Burning Questions, we take a look at whatโ€™s on offer at the Emirates. Arsenalโ€™s first season without Robin Van Persie started tentatively but as the raft of summer signings started to gel and develop an understanding, the Gunners finished the campaign superbly, with eight wins and two draws in their final 10 fixtures.

The only side in the league to feature four players with 10 or more goals in 2012/13 (Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski), Arsene Wengerโ€™s side were also impressive at the back and conceded just 37 times โ€“ the second most resilient backline in the top-flight. With strong options available right throughout the first XI, our site contributors have plenty to mull overโ€ฆ

Tinkerman saysโ€ฆ
I think itโ€™s going to be pretty hard to look past Theo Walcott. The fact that he scored only 11 points less than Santi Cazorla last season despite playing over 1,000 fewer minutes suggests he has the potential to outshine all of his team-mates on the Fantasy front, if, as widely expected, he is handed an increased amount of game time.

Many forward thinking managers have been quick to point to Cazorlaโ€™s superior cumulative score under the new Bonus Points System (BPS) in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, but I personally donโ€™t think this will play a huge role in deciding who produces the most Fantasy points, since Walcottโ€™s superior rate of goals and assists per game should see him outscore the Spaniard.

Others will also point towards Olivier Giroud benefitting from the lack of a new signing in the striking department but, despite the glut of chances he had last season, the Frenchman has yet to prove he has the class to start scoring more regularly for Arsenal. Also, a likely new signing in this area would surely hurt Giroudโ€™s game time enough to make him unworthy of consideration.

In Tommy We Trust saysโ€ฆ
Oliver Giroud. The mercurial Frenchman had a somewhat up and down debut season with several double digit Gameweek performances as well as some that drove Fantasy managers wild with frustration. His stats were very handy, though, and far better than the output in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game โ€“ for example, his โ€œChances per Minuteโ€ pace was quicker than the benchmark that is Robin Van Persie over the whole season.

So what needs to change for Giroud to become the Fantasy Football monster, hoovering up points like a Dyson? One reason could be his confidence level; something the Arsenal front man has said affects his game. Well if he isnโ€™t confident after his pre-season performances (seven goals so far), then he requires some counselling.

Giroudโ€™s all-round game is another reason why I believe he can be a force. He has an accomplished first touch, good movement and is good in the air โ€“ all traits required to be successful in the Premier League. There is also Arsene Wenger to consider in this argument. One of the Arsenalโ€™s managerโ€™s best traits is the ability to improve a player by weaving his magic over a seemingly average prospect with slight changes to the playerโ€™s game. For Giroud, this is getting him to play further up the pitch and refrain from dropping deeper to link up play. For the members among us, run a comparison between his first 19 games and the subsequent 19 โ€“ it will highlight a lot of interesting stats but his average position map is the one that interests me the most.

Lastly, the Premier League is full of foreign stars that produce in their second season and beyond. I am predicting Giroud will the next in this long list.

Applebonkers saysโ€ฆ..
As it stands, it’s the duo I call “the Bayern bookends” โ€“ that’s the two guys who scored in Arsenalโ€™s win in the Allianz Arena last season, Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud. Koscielny is vital to fuse together the Gunners clean sheet potential; he covers for Per Mertesacker’s flaws whilst Vermaelen would too often expose them.

At the other end, Giroud did have a reputation as a bit of a Gallic galoot at times last season but he has the potential to bring Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere into the game more than other strikers (including previous target Gonzalo Higuain) can. It’s also worth noting Giroud has exactly the same first full campaign as Luis Suarez did (according to Opta, at least), with 11 goals and three assists accrued. An FPL price of 8.5 for the centre-forward in a high-scoring team with a history of second-season blossoming? Serious potential.

Mark says…
Iโ€™ll happily pin my colours to the mast: Walcott is in every one of my Fantasy game squads right now. For me, heโ€™s that “essential”. Arsenal have been handed a โ€œkindโ€ opening to the season and Walcott is a player who is, potentially, still โ€œon the riseโ€.

His progress last season in terms of goalscoring was there for all to see and Iโ€™ll give you a stat for free โ€“ Walcott was involved (scored or assisted) in 44% of Arsenalโ€™s goals last term (when on the pitch), compared to 27.6% in 2011/12. That demonstrates both his progress and his importance to the Arsenal cause. Arsene Wengerโ€™s side wonโ€™t face a top six side away from the Emirates until Gameweek 11 and, before that, encounter just Spurs and Liverpool at home. Iโ€™m anticipating a strong start, a good few goals and profit from Walcott.

Do I look to double up? Perhaps. Thereโ€™s no doubt that Santi Carzorla is the other quality acquisition. In the Sun Dream Team and Sky Sports, Iโ€™m certainly considering swooping for the pair โ€“ encouraged by the Spaniardโ€™s propensity to pick up supplementary points (Man of the Match and Star Man). In the Fantasy Premier League, Iโ€™m far more cautious. Budget restrictions are pointing me elsewhere, perhaps even to Olivier Girioud.

If you put any stock in pre-season form, Giroud is a hot ticket. Much maligned in his first season, Giroud did not hide. He was well fed, had plenty of efforts on goal and was a โ€œpresenceโ€ when on the pitch. While he failed to translate that to strong returns, Iโ€™ve little doubt that weโ€™ll see an improvement this season if he is given a platform to perform. Based on his summer, Grioud could start the season leading an Arsenal attack and fed by Walcott and Cazorla; thatโ€™s enough for me to take his claims for a place in my attack seriously.

As for the defence – again, there was improvement on show here: the Gunners ended the season conceding just five goals in their last eight Gameweeks with Laurent Koscielny, in particular, outstanding. It’s going to take 5.5 in the FPL to draft in a secure members of Wenger’s defence but, given their schedule, once again it’s a route I have to consider. With question marks over starters and rotation in the United and City defence, the Gunners looks a sound investment for those happy to spend on a defender or two.

    Evening guys.
Getting quite excited for the big kick off this Saturday.
It'd be of great help if people would lend an opinion on two topics..

    1) Thoughts on Coleman? Is he guaranteed to start? Will he be right back or right midfield?
    will Everton keep many cleansheets?

    2) Giroud.. he's currently in my team with Soldado and Lukaku. Is he worth more than Lambert? Is he guaranteed to start ahead of Podolski ?

Coleman will hopefully be at RM. Whether this will be detrimental, due to 3 at the back not being the most effective formation in the prem, is not really known yet (with a team of good defensive calibre such as Everton). Clean sheets may be less, but assists and possibly goals may be more, so we need to way up whether it is worth it

Giroud is in my team also, he has gained confidence and has good fixtures. My only worry is if Wenger starts Podolski, after saying that the team he put out would most likely contain players that would start next saturday. Fingers crossed it is Giroud instead...!

Coleman to start at RB for me, I don't see Martinez opening the season with a 3-4-3 and the majority of their preseason has been 4-3-3. I see less CS than under Moyes and I had him in my team originally but I don't love their fixtures and I have Miralles so I am not gonna double Everton.

      1) Nailed on starter. I think they'll start the season with 4-3-3 with him at right-back. If they deploy someone like Heitinga as a holding midfielder though (as they did vs Real Madrid) then it can change to a 3-4-3 at any time, with Coleman on the right of midfield.

      2) Giroud seems nailed on. Lambert has decent fixtures though. Up to you, but Walcott is the Arsenal "cover" for most people

Now that Bale is certain to miss the opening fixture and him staying at Spurs looking more and more unlikely, how do you get Spurs cover?

Spurs have a kind run of fixtures and having their attacking cover looks necessary. Soldado is a popular pick. But is he the guy to have? He has barely had any pre season and is not a proven PL player.

Or do you look to get Siggy or Holtby who can be fantasy gold at their prices?

God no. A big part of the RvP problem is that pricetag just makes him so cumbersome to transfer in and out. You're either required to have a fair bit of money in the bank in which case your team will be weaker than others for gameweeks that that's the case for or it'll take 2-3 transfers. Or both. You can't just get him in and out for odd gameweeks.

    The question over Benteke:

No doubt he is a very good player, but what of his scoring record? I don't have the facts in fron of me, but I don't think he did particularly well against the top 4 teams. Does this make him a bit of a bully?

Is his double enough to make us put him in the team?

Do we think he could continue his almost fixture proof esque performance, or will everyone be clued on as to how to defend against him (e.g Kolo Toure shutting him out in the Man City match entirely)

I'm getting him purely on the fact that I fancy him to outscore the Chelsea forwards as well as the potential to be very explosive. He has a lot going for him: nailed on for 180 minutes, in good (preseason albeit) form and proven fantasy asset in a familiar side.

I'm not convinced that one season is enough to conclude that a 22 year old, potentially world class forward, isn't capable of scoring against top sides. Especially when you consider he was playing in a pretty poor team.

Last year he was very good, but I honestly feel that this year he'll be spectacular, banging the goals in before his inevitable move to a Champions League club

really think he'll improve this season, rather than get worked out, 2nd season syndrome or whatever the kids call it these days. last season his top 4 record was poor, an assist v man utd and a goal v chelsea and blanks in the other 6 games. worth noting too kolo toure had an impressive game against him for man city at villa park (gw2 v liverpool), although with toure you never know which version will turn up.

in isolation i think he's a deent dgw punt, the main worry is it's not isolation, it's no doubt alongside 3 chelsea players who also have blanks weeks in gw3. not only does it put you under real pressure for your players to stay fit but it takes away any leeway to punt on guys like dzeko for example.

overall, given that i think he's improving, has a good injury record, is on penalties and looks set to play basically every minute of every game i can't see him not breaking the 20 goals barrier this season, and top 4 sides will be amongst this somewhere.

Interesting the debate regarding Dzeko the guy is a natural goalscorer regardless of if he plays even 30 mins in a game he scored 14 last season from a total game time that equates to about 20 games indeed his points per game average is over 6 and he scored more points in less minutes the season before. Supposedly this city team will be less conservative than a Mancini side and I think given the choice personally out of him and Aguero I would fancy Dzeko to score more if given the chance. I suppose the only great risk is having a guy who might not play at all at 7.5 compared to say a Ricky Lambert who is nailed on at Soton

But surely your strikers are there to get goals I'm not 100% on the points scoring in FPL but playing over 60 minutes is only actually worth 2 points anyway and I think I'd rather go with guys who will make an impact rather than just turn up each week. Anyway I'm not sure why I bought it up I'll be going with Lambert everyday of the week in that price range

you are right but I factor in 2 things

        1) Because of this Oscar will have to do well to stay in the team (I expect him to play at least 120 mins)

        2) It's a world cup year and it's in Brazil. Oscar will have to be playing regularly to get into that team, no way Big Phil will get away with taking a 2nd choice player to a world cup.
