Next up in our series of Burning Questions, we take a look at what’s on offer at the Emirates. Arsenal’s first season without Robin Van Persie started tentatively but as the raft of summer signings started to gel and develop an understanding, the Gunners finished the campaign superbly, with eight wins and two draws in their final 10 fixtures.

The only side in the league to feature four players with 10 or more goals in 2012/13 (Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski), Arsene Wenger’s side were also impressive at the back and conceded just 37 times – the second most resilient backline in the top-flight. With strong options available right throughout the first XI, our site contributors have plenty to mull over…

Tinkerman says…
I think it’s going to be pretty hard to look past Theo Walcott. The fact that he scored only 11 points less than Santi Cazorla last season despite playing over 1,000 fewer minutes suggests he has the potential to outshine all of his team-mates on the Fantasy front, if, as widely expected, he is handed an increased amount of game time.

Many forward thinking managers have been quick to point to Cazorla’s superior cumulative score under the new Bonus Points System (BPS) in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, but I personally don’t think this will play a huge role in deciding who produces the most Fantasy points, since Walcott’s superior rate of goals and assists per game should see him outscore the Spaniard.

Others will also point towards Olivier Giroud benefitting from the lack of a new signing in the striking department but, despite the glut of chances he had last season, the Frenchman has yet to prove he has the class to start scoring more regularly for Arsenal. Also, a likely new signing in this area would surely hurt Giroud’s game time enough to make him unworthy of consideration.

In Tommy We Trust says…
Oliver Giroud. The mercurial Frenchman had a somewhat up and down debut season with several double digit Gameweek performances as well as some that drove Fantasy managers wild with frustration. His stats were very handy, though, and far better than the output in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – for example, his “Chances per Minute” pace was quicker than the benchmark that is Robin Van Persie over the whole season.

So what needs to change for Giroud to become the Fantasy Football monster, hoovering up points like a Dyson? One reason could be his confidence level; something the Arsenal front man has said affects his game. Well if he isn’t confident after his pre-season performances (seven goals so far), then he requires some counselling.

Giroud’s all-round game is another reason why I believe he can be a force. He has an accomplished first touch, good movement and is good in the air – all traits required to be successful in the Premier League. There is also Arsene Wenger to consider in this argument. One of the Arsenal’s manager’s best traits is the ability to improve a player by weaving his magic over a seemingly average prospect with slight changes to the player’s game. For Giroud, this is getting him to play further up the pitch and refrain from dropping deeper to link up play. For the members among us, run a comparison between his first 19 games and the subsequent 19 – it will highlight a lot of interesting stats but his average position map is the one that interests me the most.

Lastly, the Premier League is full of foreign stars that produce in their second season and beyond. I am predicting Giroud will the next in this long list.

Applebonkers says…..
As it stands, it’s the duo I call “the Bayern bookends” – that’s the two guys who scored in Arsenal’s win in the Allianz Arena last season, Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud. Koscielny is vital to fuse together the Gunners clean sheet potential; he covers for Per Mertesacker’s flaws whilst Vermaelen would too often expose them.

At the other end, Giroud did have a reputation as a bit of a Gallic galoot at times last season but he has the potential to bring Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere into the game more than other strikers (including previous target Gonzalo Higuain) can. It’s also worth noting Giroud has exactly the same first full campaign as Luis Suarez did (according to Opta, at least), with 11 goals and three assists accrued. An FPL price of 8.5 for the centre-forward in a high-scoring team with a history of second-season blossoming? Serious potential.

Mark says…
I’ll happily pin my colours to the mast: Walcott is in every one of my Fantasy game squads right now. For me, he’s that “essential”. Arsenal have been handed a “kind” opening to the season and Walcott is a player who is, potentially, still “on the rise”.

His progress last season in terms of goalscoring was there for all to see and I’ll give you a stat for free – Walcott was involved (scored or assisted) in 44% of Arsenal’s goals last term (when on the pitch), compared to 27.6% in 2011/12. That demonstrates both his progress and his importance to the Arsenal cause. Arsene Wenger’s side won’t face a top six side away from the Emirates until Gameweek 11 and, before that, encounter just Spurs and Liverpool at home. I’m anticipating a strong start, a good few goals and profit from Walcott.

Do I look to double up? Perhaps. There’s no doubt that Santi Carzorla is the other quality acquisition. In the Sun Dream Team and Sky Sports, I’m certainly considering swooping for the pair – encouraged by the Spaniard’s propensity to pick up supplementary points (Man of the Match and Star Man). In the Fantasy Premier League, I’m far more cautious. Budget restrictions are pointing me elsewhere, perhaps even to Olivier Girioud.

If you put any stock in pre-season form, Giroud is a hot ticket. Much maligned in his first season, Giroud did not hide. He was well fed, had plenty of efforts on goal and was a “presence” when on the pitch. While he failed to translate that to strong returns, I’ve little doubt that we’ll see an improvement this season if he is given a platform to perform. Based on his summer, Grioud could start the season leading an Arsenal attack and fed by Walcott and Cazorla; that’s enough for me to take his claims for a place in my attack seriously.

As for the defence – again, there was improvement on show here: the Gunners ended the season conceding just five goals in their last eight Gameweeks with Laurent Koscielny, in particular, outstanding. It’s going to take 5.5 in the FPL to draft in a secure members of Wenger’s defence but, given their schedule, once again it’s a route I have to consider. With question marks over starters and rotation in the United and City defence, the Gunners looks a sound investment for those happy to spend on a defender or two.

Ok I see there is popular demand for 4.0 defender. Well Houston we have a problem.

Paar - haven't play at all in pre season, so I would be worried about his fitness and starting role.
Brayford - the much fancied around here didn't start the last game in what looked like first lineup and Caulker in it. Previously he played before Caulker came. So He isn't assured of starts. He might start but its a risk.
Ward - he plays for the worst defense in the PL IMO, so not good too
Murner - I fancied him a lot, but it seems like he isn't a starter too. Latest games showed that.

That leaves us with Chester - Hull defender but at least he is nailed on.

P.S. With latest injuries in the Norwich camp Ryan Bennett could get some starts.

And yes, Bennett is expected to come in for the injured Bassong, but doesn't sound like Bassong is injured long enough to make it worth getting him.

Think Martin moved from RB to CB in a recent game to cover for Bassing, allowing Whittaker to play at RB. So Whittaker's place depends on Bassong too I think.

        Hazard / Walcott / Coutinho / Mirillas / Morrison
        Soldado / Benteke / Lukaku

Would love to find 0.5m for Benteke -> Negredo. But its just too risky having both hi and Lukaku up front

Plus I don't like having the dilemma of deciding between playing your 4th and 5th mid most weeks. And getting it wrong.

Just pick one that doesn't play at all then! What a dumbass thing to say.

If you can't pick the player most likely to score well more often than not increasing the maximum score a player can get on his own you shouldn't be playing this game.

The latter hardly ever happens. If we get the news of our regular being injured etc., we normally use the transfer

Chepas mids hardly ever give you more than 2 points anyway, so what the worse that could happen?

If you'd like to play, please write 25 players names on a piece of paper and post it to me with a cheque for 50 quid.

I think people are thinking of RvP the wrong way. There's only one way you should decide whether or not you're going to get him. If he's going to score more than alternatives.

People saying he's easier to have now and then get rid of him later if he doesn't perform aren't seeing it from the other side. If he doesn't perform/gets injured, you'll need at least 2 transfers to equalize the funds across the team, 3 if you want a more potent balance.

That's the same as if you want to get him if he becomes a must-have. You will find a way to get him if you need him. I'm sure of this. Last season, he was 13 and very few people started with him because of the Rooney risk. They found 13m real quick by GW 2 or 3 without too much trouble. 1 extra million won't be particularly difficult to filch.

Here's how I think you should look at it then decide whether he's worth it or not:

      RvP + Rodriguez + 6.0mid VS 7.5 striker, Soldado, Coutinho/Silva

If that looks like a fair tradeoff to you then go for it. If not, don't.

It was easy last year cos Fellaini, Michu, Baines, Benteke, Lambert who scored 170+ were all less that 7.5m

Its impossible to say at season start of course but in my opinion it really looks like there are fewer players this year who'll do that.

And RVP is 1m more too, very very difficult to have him and balance a team... and very difficult to get him in if the 9m etc players are performing.

OK so here goes my next big update of FPL Analyzer tool/bookmarklet which I posted a few weeks earlier.

      I have-
      * displayed price on transfer page, in addition to GW opponent and FISO NTI percentage (which are all 0 at the moment, but should work once the game has started)
      * added some control buttons for convenience
      * added comments to Github codebase fwiw

I find myself using it every time I am tinkering with my team. Hopefully you'll find it useful too. If you run into any problems let me know. Any feedback will also be appreciated.

You will find how-to-setup and how-to-use instructions here: http://www.fplanalyzer.com

        It's always subjective unfortunately.

Some people could have a perfect starting XI then get called out on having a weak bench. It really depends on how each person deems the best way to play the game.

Also, no matter what, you're missing out on a player out there that someone will say is needed.

Looking back to the Scout article on Aspas' signing, "A cost of around 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems likely..."

7m must be a bit of a bargain then.

Generally it's 20 pts per million over the season at the attacking end, so you'd expect 40 pts less than Sturridge if he is keeping on value against him which is pretty much where the predictions have him.

So essentially Aspas = Sturridge minus the odd (C) selection.

Although that's not really relevant to a points per million analysis.
Everton were a 5 in midfield in any case, whereas Liverpool have the 2 support strikers much closer to the central striker.

Well it isn't exactly relevant, I know. But it does seem to make you think if you are wasting a spot upfront. I think we still need to assess Aspas a bit more in the league, but at 7 he is worth a punt.

This guy is the cause for a lot of division. Some don't rate the guy at all and others rave on about him. I'm not really sure what to think but even at 7m I'd loath having a questionable winger in one of my 3 forward spots.

Compare Sturridge and Coutinho's average position over the last 6 GWs.
Not a lot in it, the 'winger' in the system is asked to interchange position.
So we need to ask ourselves what is Aspas' natural tendency on the pitch.
Since he was playing as a striker I'd presume it is not as a touch line hugging winger, but a player who will come inside into those central areas to link with Sturridge.

Aspas is not injury prone, Sturridge is.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Sturridge but I can't fit him in. So will Aspas produce the same rate of returns in terms of the VORP? The indications seems to show that he will, so he is a valid pick.

Yes but its yet to be seen how Aspas will play in a wider role with Sturridge in the team. In the last game he played with Sturridge and Aspas wasn't particularly good.

This goes for many players at many teams before a ball has been kicked.
Coutinho comes in at 9m for the same role, so I think Aspas is worth a punt early doors.

Yeah I'd agree he is a punt. We know how Coutinho plays with Sturridge because of last season. Overall I just think its wiser to limit your punts for GW1 and concentrate on accuracy.

I've watched 2 and a half of their pre-season games and he has been by far their most influential attacking player. He looks dangerous every time he's on the ball and is virtually playing as a striker off Jelavic/Kone. His only problems last season were fitness, he still managed 6 goals, 5 assists in limited game time and at 7.5 I can't see anyone up until Walcott or Hazard that I would have over him.

In all seriousness, has anyone even considered Torres? The top scorer in the Confederations Tournament has been talked up by Mourinho and withdrawn from the Spanish squad.

"We won’t re-model his game, it is impossible to re-model his game. But we want to adapt the team and teach the team how to use his best qualities, because his game is his game.

He is what he is and he is very good with the qualities that he has got. So we need to learn and support his game.

‘I feel he is highly motivated, he works very hard. I think some of the work we do with the team in terms of attack suits his qualities." - Mourinho

Its strange but i thought about this very thing earlier today, I now dont have Lukaku in my team coz i havent ot a clue what Mourinho will do. You would think that he could very well play him against both Villa and Hull in the hope he gets off to a flier because he generally gives Vidic a hard time so going into the United game high on confidence could be a very shrewd move. Just a thought

All i've done is ask for explanation and expressed my disappointment for not being selected

i've not made personal remarks about anyone nor have i used offensive language. I'll be bitterly disappointed if i'm permanently banned due to this.

I'm logging off now, so stop mentioning me, thanks.

Good night Nate. you're a good lad and you know it.

Lost track of the number of people who start off like you and end up being useful contributors.

I posted this earlier but the pages were flying passed.

How to get RVP without using our Wildcard

Before you read this I'm going to assume that your most expensive midfielder is 9.5 (Hazard and Walcott). Judging by the vast majority of RMTs I think this is a fair assumption to make.

To get RVP in two transfers you'd have to downgrade Hazard to a 4.5 mid and then upgrade at least a 9.0 striker.

Would you feel comfortable having two 4.5 midfielders in your team who are unlikely to play?

The only reasonable way to do it in two transfers would be if you had a striker who is 9.5/10.0 or above, otherwise anything else would take three transfers.

Also, one would assume you're priority would be wanting to get rid of your double Gameweek players first before their blank in Gameweek 3. Well, neither Chelsea or Villa have a striker who is above 9.5 so that would only leave Saldado or one of the three expensive City strikers, which would be far from ideal.

Just thought I'd post this in case people hadn't made a contingency plan.

        If I must

        Benteke / Mata
        to
RVP / 5.5 mid flavor of the day

Leaves me with Ivan and Hazz bench GW3

The problem lies in having more than just Hazard for the DGW. If you've got Lukaku, Oscar, Benteke, etc, you're trying to use your transfers to get them out. Two transfers isn't enough to achieve that AND bring in RVP before GW3, unless you engineer your team very specifically.

Good shout. Had thought of this, and I've decided (at the moment...!!!) that I will not be opting for RVP. The points RVP and a cheap 4.5 (unless there is a bandwagon player on the rise) will be less than a premium midfielder and a top end striker.

Whilst that's true in principle, you do start to run out of valid options quite quickly. At least, that's my take on it. With RVP entrenched up front I only need to find two other reliable strikers; am looking at Soldado and Berbatov. But I don't think there are enough decent premium mid/striker options to warrant leaving RVP out on that basis. I suppose it depends whether you trust the likes of Dzeko, Giroud etc.
