Next up in our series of Burning Questions, we take a look at what’s on offer at the Emirates. Arsenal’s first season without Robin Van Persie started tentatively but as the raft of summer signings started to gel and develop an understanding, the Gunners finished the campaign superbly, with eight wins and two draws in their final 10 fixtures.

The only side in the league to feature four players with 10 or more goals in 2012/13 (Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski), Arsene Wenger’s side were also impressive at the back and conceded just 37 times – the second most resilient backline in the top-flight. With strong options available right throughout the first XI, our site contributors have plenty to mull over…

Tinkerman says…
I think it’s going to be pretty hard to look past Theo Walcott. The fact that he scored only 11 points less than Santi Cazorla last season despite playing over 1,000 fewer minutes suggests he has the potential to outshine all of his team-mates on the Fantasy front, if, as widely expected, he is handed an increased amount of game time.

Many forward thinking managers have been quick to point to Cazorla’s superior cumulative score under the new Bonus Points System (BPS) in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, but I personally don’t think this will play a huge role in deciding who produces the most Fantasy points, since Walcott’s superior rate of goals and assists per game should see him outscore the Spaniard.

Others will also point towards Olivier Giroud benefitting from the lack of a new signing in the striking department but, despite the glut of chances he had last season, the Frenchman has yet to prove he has the class to start scoring more regularly for Arsenal. Also, a likely new signing in this area would surely hurt Giroud’s game time enough to make him unworthy of consideration.

In Tommy We Trust says…
Oliver Giroud. The mercurial Frenchman had a somewhat up and down debut season with several double digit Gameweek performances as well as some that drove Fantasy managers wild with frustration. His stats were very handy, though, and far better than the output in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – for example, his “Chances per Minute” pace was quicker than the benchmark that is Robin Van Persie over the whole season.

So what needs to change for Giroud to become the Fantasy Football monster, hoovering up points like a Dyson? One reason could be his confidence level; something the Arsenal front man has said affects his game. Well if he isn’t confident after his pre-season performances (seven goals so far), then he requires some counselling.

Giroud’s all-round game is another reason why I believe he can be a force. He has an accomplished first touch, good movement and is good in the air – all traits required to be successful in the Premier League. There is also Arsene Wenger to consider in this argument. One of the Arsenal’s manager’s best traits is the ability to improve a player by weaving his magic over a seemingly average prospect with slight changes to the player’s game. For Giroud, this is getting him to play further up the pitch and refrain from dropping deeper to link up play. For the members among us, run a comparison between his first 19 games and the subsequent 19 – it will highlight a lot of interesting stats but his average position map is the one that interests me the most.

Lastly, the Premier League is full of foreign stars that produce in their second season and beyond. I am predicting Giroud will the next in this long list.

Applebonkers says…..
As it stands, it’s the duo I call “the Bayern bookends” – that’s the two guys who scored in Arsenal’s win in the Allianz Arena last season, Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud. Koscielny is vital to fuse together the Gunners clean sheet potential; he covers for Per Mertesacker’s flaws whilst Vermaelen would too often expose them.

At the other end, Giroud did have a reputation as a bit of a Gallic galoot at times last season but he has the potential to bring Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere into the game more than other strikers (including previous target Gonzalo Higuain) can. It’s also worth noting Giroud has exactly the same first full campaign as Luis Suarez did (according to Opta, at least), with 11 goals and three assists accrued. An FPL price of 8.5 for the centre-forward in a high-scoring team with a history of second-season blossoming? Serious potential.

Mark says…
I’ll happily pin my colours to the mast: Walcott is in every one of my Fantasy game squads right now. For me, he’s that “essential”. Arsenal have been handed a “kind” opening to the season and Walcott is a player who is, potentially, still “on the rise”.

His progress last season in terms of goalscoring was there for all to see and I’ll give you a stat for free – Walcott was involved (scored or assisted) in 44% of Arsenal’s goals last term (when on the pitch), compared to 27.6% in 2011/12. That demonstrates both his progress and his importance to the Arsenal cause. Arsene Wenger’s side won’t face a top six side away from the Emirates until Gameweek 11 and, before that, encounter just Spurs and Liverpool at home. I’m anticipating a strong start, a good few goals and profit from Walcott.

Do I look to double up? Perhaps. There’s no doubt that Santi Carzorla is the other quality acquisition. In the Sun Dream Team and Sky Sports, I’m certainly considering swooping for the pair – encouraged by the Spaniard’s propensity to pick up supplementary points (Man of the Match and Star Man). In the Fantasy Premier League, I’m far more cautious. Budget restrictions are pointing me elsewhere, perhaps even to Olivier Girioud.

If you put any stock in pre-season form, Giroud is a hot ticket. Much maligned in his first season, Giroud did not hide. He was well fed, had plenty of efforts on goal and was a “presence” when on the pitch. While he failed to translate that to strong returns, I’ve little doubt that we’ll see an improvement this season if he is given a platform to perform. Based on his summer, Grioud could start the season leading an Arsenal attack and fed by Walcott and Cazorla; that’s enough for me to take his claims for a place in my attack seriously.

As for the defence – again, there was improvement on show here: the Gunners ended the season conceding just five goals in their last eight Gameweeks with Laurent Koscielny, in particular, outstanding. It’s going to take 5.5 in the FPL to draft in a secure members of Wenger’s defence but, given their schedule, once again it’s a route I have to consider. With question marks over starters and rotation in the United and City defence, the Gunners looks a sound investment for those happy to spend on a defender or two.

Not so sure. Will be tough with Europe League. Unless if they buy a new center back. Because if one of Williams or Chico injured, Swansea could be in trouble unless Jordi Amat is really good.

Now that Bale is certain to miss the opening fixture and him staying at Spurs looking more and more unlikely, how do you get Spurs cover?

Spurs have a kind run of fixtures and having their attacking cover looks necessary. Soldado is a popular pick. But is he the guy to have? He has barely had any pre season and is not a proven PL player.

Or do you look to get Siggy or Holtby who can be fantasy gold at their prices?

Record signing, great history and on penalties. I wouldn't look much further until a few games into the season.
Maybe Kyle Walker, he looked fantastic the other night. (going forward.. )

I would rather have Soldado, a classy striker nailed on for a lone forward role, than any other Spurs asset. Mostly due to unknown roles of many of the midfielders and there was a lot of rotation and chopping and changing last year from AVB

I've not got so much of a rate my team request - there will be many changes still - as much as it is a rate the approach I'm thinking of taking request. I’m going to bore people with another view on double gameweeks:

    Guzan/ Krul
    Ivanovic/ Luiz/ Coleman (Parr/ Shaw)
    Miralles/ Tonev/ Walcott/ Coutinho/ Hazard (c)
    Bentake/ Sturridge (Anelka)

I'm a big fan of the double gameweek if you can take advantage of it and, equally important for this team I'm a fan of playing a wildcard after gameweek 3 because:

You can review your team in light of transfer deadline day signings
You can get on board with all the international break price rises
You have got a fair idea of the way teams are going to play and who will be important so you can build a settled team until Christmas.

As such I am basically building a team just for the first 3 gameweeks.

The plan would be to keep Guzan - Krul has got easy fixtures in GW 2 and 3 so he would play those with Guzan on the bench. After GW3 I get in keepers that rotate nicely until Christmas.

Other than that, like many other people I’m thinking I can bench the DGW players in GW 3 when they don’t play. So the maths is 5 outfield DGW players, 2 FT before GW3 so you transfer out 2 and sit 3 on the bench in GW3. Therefore, including your goalkeeper you’ve had 540 extra minutes of playtime.... obvious stuff.

I’m aware its not as simple as that though - you don’t know players will play both of the DGW games and its highly risky to bench blank players for GW3 when you know injury or rotation may occur. The way I see it though is this is a time when you should go balls deep for the DGW because it’s a rare scenario whereby you’ve got infinite transfers so close to either side of a DGW and:

If Hazard plays twice in the first gameweek but leaves me with an unavoidable blank in GW3 that’s still the same amount of minutes as Michu so there isn’t a great risk – same with all the DGW players.

Aston Villa have poor fixtures, but they offer cheap options that you wouldn’t mind benching even if they were playing

And most importantly to me the first 4 gameweeks are always the most volatile in the season and catching price rises can set you up for the rest of the season. There will almost certainly be Michu - esque rises again this season so however you start you are going to leave yourself in a situation whereby you will be tempted to take some hits to get them in…….if ever there is a good time to take hits this is it. Similarly you’re going to get players dropping in price you want to dump. If you take the approach of playing 6 double gameweek players of varying prices spread throughout the team you are leaving yourself with the situation whereby you are minimising those hits as the players you transfer out have already got the game time under their belt.

Any comments/ pointing out glaring errors would be appreciated. Just got to figure out whose playing both DGW games.

For the duration I'd have them Guzan would have 2 games in the first GW so should get a few save points and Krul is up against West Ham (H) and Fulham (H). Cant see a problem with that.

I would add that to commit to playing your wildcard seems wreckless to me. If you could guarantee an extra 40/50 points by maxing out on the DGW, I would do it. But it seems that there are so many knowns who will play with Chelsea, and Villa have such poor fixtures, that unless you get lucky with your picks, you are only going to turn an extra 15-20 points by maxing out

    Dudes/Dudettes.

First post ever. 2nd season in FPL. I just wanted to comment on RVP inclusion. Last year, ~3100 minutes at 262 points, or ~12 minutes/point. However, Walcott ~2250 minutes for 196 point least year was 11.5 minutes/point. Even with diminished returns, captaining Walcott every game would be arguably better than RVP; especially because RVP is 14 points on glass ankles and Walcott is 9.5 points on, well, similar glass ankles.
Same argument for Sturridge, Lukaku, even Lampard. On points per value, RVP doesn't deserve a 14 point price tag. We have at least 5 options (based on last season) that easily equally value him, even with diminished returns.
Furthermore, players like Benteke are only going to get better. Unless ManU strengthens behind RVP, his value will only diminish this year.
    Enough said?

Yes every season throws up a new list of must have players, and amongst these there will be a new reliable captaincy option. Fantasy managers need to constantly look forward and only look back on trends and not overall totals. Based on that Id say its unlikely RVP will beat last years efforts and likely that players on the up could do quite well this season.

In the main I agree but two things pop to mind:

      1. Walcott didn't play that much last season and was shifted around much. Ok he had his contract wrangles, but will he play every game this year? Not sure. RVP on the other hand will.

      2. RVP had pants support last year. Midfield was atrocious. They can only improve and when/if they do, RVP will start getting more points. 300-season in the cards?

      Good post FFCBerb

RVP is one of very few players that offer consistency throughout the season. Despite his high price, he offers good security of starts and keeps bringing in the points. Very few ppl went without him last season for these reasons.

That said, Walcott is a must IMO, and Sturridge isn't far behind. Lukaku and Lamps are a bit punty given they have a new coach and fierce competition for their spots. If not for the DGW it'd be wait and see with those two.

I trust Arsenal defence almost as much as City defence ATM, but I'm currently unsure about Everton defence under Martinez.

Do you reckon Coleman is a good pick?

    ~|Soldado - An FPL Gem?|~

Tottenham new boy Soldado has sparked a large amount of interest from fantasy owners, here are a few facts about the Spaniard to give you some extra in site into this FPL prospect:
Soldado scored 30 goals last season in all competitions, one every 122 minutes - a better strike rate than Gonzalo Higuain.

Soldado had exactly 100 shots in La Liga last season, compared to Emmanuel Adebayor's 48 in the Premier League for Tottenham.

He has scored more than 20 goals in La Liga in all of his three seasons at Valencia, four in a row if including his haul for Getafe the year before.

Like Manchester City new boy Alvaro Negredo, Soldado actually began his career at Real Madrid, but left in search of regular football after failing to establish himself as a regular in the midst of the Galactico era.

Soldado does his defensive duties too - He made 40 clearances last season- mostly from set pieces, in comparison to 15 from Emmanuel Adebayor and just three from Jermain Defoe.

Soldado is the fourth player his agent has moved from La Liga to the Premier League this summer, following Fulham's Fernando Amorebieta, Everton's Gerard Deulofeu (loan) and Stoke's Marc Muniesa.

His highest goal haul came in 2011 when he scored all four goals for Valencia in a 4-2 win against former club Getafe.

He also has two Champions League hat-tricks on his CV, scored past BATE Borisov and Genk.

Soldado has been sent off three times in his career, but not since early 2009.

Am I right in saying that Tomkins has struggled to get minutes at CB in recent times (last season, this pre-season)?

Collins seems to have got a significant amount of pre-season minutes, I don't quite understand why you're not hot on him.

I don't know if I will spend 5m on a West Ham defender when I can get Toure.

As a Arsenal fan Walcott will be the key man but if surez signs he can only be fantasy gold i also expect aaron ramsey to have a good season having shown great form in the pre season freindlys!

Kos nailed on at cb and could be a good punt i expect arsenal to keep quiet a lot of CS and with his attacking threat from set pieces kos will be a good buy

Kos and merty are unbeaten in something like 13 games together if they can keep fit and arsene strengthens the cdm (with gustavo rumoured to be close) Arsenal could be a genuine CS option

If arsenal do sign a RB it could be that we see sagna used more us a cb unless jenks is nailed out

IMO it's a ploy to hasten the deal to Real. Tottenham would almost never sell their star player to United again. Particularly for the paltry sum United have supposedly offered.

Also, now that it's known that United are willing to part with Chicharito, Real will seriously consider a bid involving the Mexican for CR7. Real covet Hernandez and I think United want CR7 more than anyone. He'd be a massive insurance policy for Moyes.

United were leaving acres of space out on the left in the Community Shield last night. That's almost begging for Ronaldo to return.

              Then there's the vacant #7...

              But only time will tell.

Spurs will not mind much on selling it to united, I think, as they are not direct rivals anyway.

Bale is nowhere near the level CR7 is, Real has to be plain stupid to bring in Bale and sell CR7

Is there anyone on here who isn't going with Walcott and Hazard? Almost every rmt I've seen has them in it...

          Alright ENR

Trying to sort my team out - it's still a bit of a mess and I'm way behind on... everything. Most likely just picking a template team and then changing it after I've actually watched all these new players

          How is yours coming along?

I know how that feels. Posted an RMT earlier and got trampled upon (constructive criticism nonetheless). A lot depends on Bale staying or leaving.

I start on Monday in 8 days, they decided they wanted me to start then and I didn't really mind having the summer off even though I'm so broke now it's pathetic 🙂

Looking forward to it though, albeit not as much as I look forward to the football season starting

Would be a shame if Negredo doesn't start. He's world-class

Pretty good I'll agree but world-class is a bit OTT when it comes to describing Negredo imo. Would Messi or Ronaldo find themselves warming their arse on the Manchester City bench around 20%+ of their time?

Varied perceptions of world-class I s'pose. For me, he's in the top 20 strikers.

      My GW2 tranfer strategy is

      A.Cole > 5.0
      Lukaku > Negredo

      You will not be disappointed
