As we announced late last week, we’ll be supporting www.playon.co.uk as our weekly Fantasy Football pursuit this season. Having dabbled with the game at the end of the previous campaign, we’ve picked up one or two pointers along the way that have, to our surprise, brought us a fair share of the prize pots.

With our £2 multiplayer game now open and offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1, we thought we’d share some of that wisdom and encourage you to try out what we think is an excellent addition to the Fantasy Football world.

Find the Untouchables
A PlayON lineup needs 11 starters who are more than likely to play for 90 minutes. With 5 points available for every minute played, there are 450 points available for finding reliable starters who can see it through to the final whistle. Sometimes you can compensate for an absentee and a few goals can carry a 10-man team but as a rule, be sure to focus on the players that will ensure you get a full starting XI out on the pitch.

Hunt out the Bargains
This is without doubt the key to success. PlayON’s pricing algorithm does its thing in advance of every Gameweek, basing player prices on performances over the prior number of gameweeks. Very often, this can create a select band of players who, for one reason or another, are clearly underpriced and offer value.

In particular, look out for those returning from injury or suspension – they will often have taken a price dip having missed several matches.

Play the Stats
This game is one of the few that recognises defensive work and rewards players who put in a shift. Actions like clearances, interceptions and tackles play their part and you should take the scoring matrix into account when making your team selections. Finding a cheap midfielder who can earn defensive points or, more importantly, a budget defender who can hoover up clearances, can be the key to freeing up funds for investment elsewhere.

The canny PlayON manager will also assess the fixtures with these stats in mind. A centre-back facing West Ham is more than likely to face a lot of crosses and aerial balls – it stands to reason that he’ll earn more clearances as a result.

Shameless plug but, if you’re an FFS member, you do, of course, have access to all the stats used in PlayON with the ability to filter by Gameweek and Gameweek range and a compare tool to run head-to-head player comparisons. We’re also planning to add specific PlayON tables very soon.

Dare to be Different
You can sometimes kid yourself that you’ve put together a strong lineup when, in reality, others will be going into the Gameweek with very similar players. A differential or two is always handy and taking one or two calculated risks can give you the edge when it comes to the shake-up for the cash prizes.

Watch for Late Injuries
Harking back to our first point, that late nugget of team news can be all-important when it comes to finding bargains. If a regular starter is crocked, this could open the way for a undervalued second string player to come in – while this is a big gamble when dealing with attacking players, it’s often handy at the back with defenders earning points for clearances and interceptions.

Read our Player Picks
Every Friday we’ll bring you three player picks – one for each position, that will help provide the foundations of your PlayON lineup. Just three, mind – we want to maintain our chances of winning some of that prize money too.

Tomorrow we’ll be taking a look at PlayON’s more advanced features and we’ll also be giving you an exclusive look at the brand new PlayON site that’s on its way soon.

Our first player picks article due on Friday, ahead of the opening Gameweek.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Keep getting Invalid URL specified every 3 or 4 comments i click in in the sidebar. Also says i must be logged in the post a comment, and sometimes a blank page when i go to the new page, with just the article(no comments). It's been happening more often since last week.

I really don't know why the FA insist on these fixtures. Sure get the squad together for training but half the team ends up no turning up due to "injuries". Surely two days of them all training together and little practice matches is better than half a team playing half a game together.

Well, "most nailed on after kun" is speculation.... I am actually thinking about him, but when there are nailed on players like Sturridge, Giroud, Soldado, Benteke, plus Lukaku who's not nailed on but has a double, I can see why he's not that popular. And that's before you even think about RVP.

Collins news before last year's international break: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2012/aug/14/chris-coleman-wales-squad

Collins in GW 1 last year: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19221467

And something i saw just now: "James Collins has not played a Wales friendly in 3.5 yrs"

Collins would also not want to miss out playing against Welsh side Cardiff imo. No signs from pre season that Tomkins has usurped him in the pecking order. Are people still worried?

Last season there were 4 significant dgws....3 of them paid off hansomely and arguably the 4th did too if you were lucky enough to give the armband to SesGet on it or else you will find yourself playing catch up the entire seasons

most people need to rotate/transfer chelsea players from dgw for the blank so adding in dzeko who is likely to be rotated after first week is just adding more things that have the potential to backfire

    Think I am set....

An "RVPless" team with a definite plan on bringing him in for GW2.

    Mignolet/Lewis
    Cole/Turner/Collins(or 4.5)/Brayford/Parr
    Haz/Oscar/Walcott/Mirallas/Kim
    Benteke/Sturridge/Jrod

    Bank 3.0

My plan is to always be just a 4pt hit away from getting RVP at all times. The need to own RVP for GW1 is diminished because there is an obvious (C) choice is Hazard or other (CHE) player. Also owning Benteke with 2 games instead of RVP is not the most terrible punt. (you are almost guaranteed 2 additional pts for the DGW).

    My Plan,

If RVP lights it up in SWA and his price is rising....
    Oscar>Snod/Adam/Sissoko.....6.5 mid or less
Benteke>RVP immediately following to Untied match to catch his price rise.

    If RVP blanks vs SWA and price is falling;

Either wait until weekend of GW2 to transact the above OR wait until for another week to get him and transfer.
    Benteke>(GW2 Bangwagon Negredo/Dzeko/Bony etc....)

    Make sense?

    Arsenal defence. All at 5.5m.

Surely Koscielny is the way to go this season. Mertersacker is the most picked defender by far but what's the real reason. Is it part timers, or are people on here taking him seriously? He will benefit more this season from the BPS, but so will Kos.
Kos played just over half the minutes of Mert (1674 to 3028), but that was down to Vermaelan starting and some injuries. This time round he looks absolutely nailed on though.
Kos also looks a goal threat too, 2 goals and and assist compared to Merts 3 and 0. Again, game time.
Ownership is such a plus, at 9% Kos is pretty much a differential (Mert 25.9%).
    Bps:
    Mert-236
    Kos-135

Who' going for who? Or are there any Gibbs or Sagna punts?

Taking the Punt on Mid price Mids.

Discluding the Fantasy Managers favourite of Mirallis what other Great Mid price mids can we take a punt on for that 4th or 5th spot in the mid.

Snodgras- Only at 6.5m with 16.2% of owners having him he looks like a decent buy in. When you take a look at the stats his preseason doesn't stand out among the average player. Playing a total of 381 minutes and scoring no goals with 2 assists. His team onky managed to score 4 goals throughout the 381 mins he was on the pitch.

Pienaar- At 7m selected by 5.8% of teams also could be a player worth the punt he had a very solid season scoring 6 goals, 8 assist and held 11 clean sheets. His preseason hasn't been up to par only playing a total of 180 mins and not getting involved with the play at all.

Ramires - At 6.5m selected by 4.6% of teams he looks very impressive playing a total of 313 Mins preseason scoring 3 goals and picking up 1 assist looks very nice and a favourite of Mourinho he will surely get game time. With Chelseas DWG up in GW1 Ramires has to be surely has to be considered?

Sessegnon - At 7m owned by 5.5% of managers is also another one to look at had a very promising 2012/13 season bagging 7 goals, 5 assists and 11 cleansheets. His preason hasnt been anything out of the ordinary Di Canio is playing him tucking in behind Altidore which should rack him up a few goals and assists this season.

Nolan - at 7m Nolan seems to be the fan favourite being owned by 12.5% of teams he is attracting alot of attention. Scoring 10 goals, 2 assist and keeping 11 clean sheets last season i dont see why not? His fixtures are amazing his cheap and reliable. But with the main man Andy Carroll out with an injury and unlikly to play first game i wouldnt consider Nolan until Carroll has returned becasue then you will no that you have spent your money on a guaranteed performer.

Me personally will be taking in Sessegnon trying to stay under the radar with these players that are not "template" material and hoping he will perform for me with Sessegnon having Altidore up front to get the ball to, but if i have to look to trade him out i will be going to HBA most likely.

Then there is the likes of De Bruyne, Arteta, Johnson and HBA that arent ones to consider until we have a look at how they go in the early Gameweeks. Although HBA could be a solid player to take in after the city game as Newcastle have very nice fixtures.

Well just Martinez in general! Even if you think he is a better manager than Moyes then you have to recognise that he is going to make changes and have new ideas which in a defense that has been so set can only be determental for the first season at least I believe.

If Martinez continues his 3-4-3 as he did at Wigan then baines could potentially offer the prospect of being OOP which would increase his attacking threat even more

Anyone worried by the amount of players playing at home GW1 and away GW2...

    Need to mix it up.

GW2 is a tricky GW anyway so I'm expecting a lot of that.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, City all at home GW1 which is a big reason for that with Man Utd and Spurs having relatively few viable fantasy options.

Nice one Killian, looking forward to playing this year. Going for the FPL 2 quid league and a couple free on vs one each week.

Great comp to have running parallel to FPL - can choose the players you don't have in FPL and increase your interest in the games.

      Wish me luck 😛
