On the eve of the new season, we roll our second analysis article on the Sky Sports game. After previously examining formations, we now turn our attention towards the Man of the Match (MOTM) recipients.

The MOTM award is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet – and warrants some attention when selecting our lineup. As the MOTM is given out by the Sky match reporter, and can often differ from the televised award, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets. Using last season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Most Awards Per Club

Firstly let’s take a look at the players who hogged the limelight and achieved the most Man of the Match awards for their respective clubs.

There are a number of significant points to note from our table:

  • There’s no sign of Robin Van Persie, who collected a paltry four MOTM awards in spite of his goalscoring heroics for United. So, while we can perhaps rely upon the Dutchman for goals, we shouldn’t expect a haul of supplementary points.
  • Man City seem to be the only team in the top seven without a stand-out performer; David Silva fared best with four MOTM awards.
  • Midfielders earned the most MOTM awards for five of the top six teams, highlighting that a midfielder who plies his trade for a side that generally tends to dominate matches, is most likely to receive the award.
  • In the bottom 11 teams, there were only two midfielders who claimed the most MOTM awards for their respective sides, highlighting that a defender or striker seems more likely to receive the award for a “lesser team”.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s now follow that up by taking a look at the players who gained five or more MOTM awards last season.

NameStartsMOTM Starts – MOTM %
Santi Cazorla371027%
Luis Suarez331030%
Wayne Rooney221045%
Gareth Bale33927%
Robert Snodgrass35925%
Ashley Williams37821%
Juan Mata31619%
Marouane Fellaini31619%
Frank Lampard21628%
Dimitar Berbatov32618%
Romelu Lukaku20630%
Ryan Shawcross37513%
James Collins29517%
Eden Hazard31516%
Steven Pienaar35514%

Most of the names in this table won’t come as a surprise due to their performances and accumulated points in 2012/13. Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting points, however:

  • Wayne Rooney achieved MOTM in a massive 45% of his games started.
  • Robert Snodgrass and Ashley Williams achieved a surprisingly large amount of MOTM awards.
  • With the futures of Rooney, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale uncertain, Santi Cazorla appears the stand-out ‘big hitter’ option once again.
  • Chelsea had three players with five or more MOTM awards apiece. Factor in the return of Romelu Lukaku and the potential signing of Rooney and it’s fair to say the awards could be spread even more evenly amongst Jose Mourinho’s side.

Awards By Position

Lastly we will take a look at which positions received the MOTM award the most times (excluding the relegated teams).

PositionTotal MOTM awards% of total MOTM
Goalkeeper154%
Defender7522%
Midfielder15747%
Forward8425%

These stats help to back up our previous article on formations, showing that once again midfielders come out on top. There is very little between forwards and defenders, whilst goalkeepers were rarely awarded MOTM awards.

Looking Forward

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”. However, combined with passing and tackling bonus, the chances of earning these awards can certainly help settle some internal struggles we may have when choosing between two players.

For example, in the contest of Santi Cazorla vs Theo Walcott, there is simply no comparison. Both produced 12 assists, while Walcott scored 14 goals to Cazorla’s 12, however, after factoring in the MOTM awards and bonus, Walcott finished on a total points haul of 174 (admittedly with less games) whilst Cazorla scored 262 points, 50 of which were from MOTM awards.

As for this season, we can expect similar trends to last. Expensive midfielders who play in “the hole” or advanced positions from the top teams should regularly receive MOTM gongs. For the lesser sides, their dominant defenders and match winning strikers will earn the plaudits. However, with an influx of some new big name forwards, we can perhaps expect that the frontmen to achieve a higher percentage of MOTM awards this time around.

This Season’s Benefactors

While we can anticipate that the patterns of awards may be similar, there are an array of players who could well emerge as stronger candidates this term.

If, as expected, David Silva is handed a regular role, and Man City’s new quartet of forwards start firing, we can anticipate the Spaniard to receive a lot more MOTM awards, in a similar vein to Cazorla for the Gunners. The possibility of Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho supporting the Liverpool attack should also see him established as a favourite – particularly if Luis Suarez is out of the picture at Anfield. Finally, on the other side of Merseyside, Kevin Mirallas is widely expected to play in an advanced position on the right of the Everton front three and could well make a dent in the awards handed to a deep-lying Marouane Fellaini.

it is a question. dzeko's gametime is still going to be seriously limited, he's a waste of a transfer waiting to happen, especially when you'l probobly want to be using those on removing chelsea players. lambert for me out of the two. (ive gone for some punty altidore though)

Reckon this is me done. None of my starting front 7 have lower than 12.9% ownership...

    Szczesny
    Turner, Ward, Toure
    Walcott, Hazard, Nolan, Snodgrass
    Soldado, RVP, Lukaku

    Harper, Morrison, Clyne, Chester

Lukaku and Hazard will be replaced by bandwagons which will probably leave with some money to upgrade Ward or Snodgrass.

West Ham don't create enough chances, he doesn't score enough goals to justify no assists.

Thanks FFS team and the community for all these great articles and posts during this preseason. For those newcomers, get yourself an avatar and link your FPL team (refer to FAQ) if you want somebody to rate your team.

Have a look at the fixtures. MC and Newcastle have easy game coming up. So plan further. BTW your team is considered good to go if you have 6-8 players in the scout picks. Trust your selections and good luck and all the best in this 13-14 FPL 🙂

I think it's just for experience, and with it being the 1st game of the season. With Andrew Taylor out, there's a rookie left back deputising. Brayford's competition is Connolly who's more of a utility defender. Mackay has talked up Brayford alot, lots of people expect him to be 1st choice RB

I am now on GRANDIN but he might not even play GW3 if Thomas is back.
TIOTE is probably the likliest to profit on the new BonusPointSystem as he gets balls and plays the easy passes.
    POZUELO is too unsecure (starts).

    @ Demi.

    Sorry went to make tea.

I've decided to pretty much ignore the DGW as the blank two games later causes far too many problems.
Particularly in all the limited transfer games I'm playing.
I think there is a good chance that many DGW players will drop .1 or .2 for GW3 giving more headaches.

One last look over my team would be much appreciated. I'll also give my thoughts on anyone else's team if they are kind enough to have a look over mine

    Mannone (Boruc)
    Ivanovic, Shaw, Collins, (Burner, Chester)
Hazard (c), Walcott, Mirallas, Redmond (Kim)
    RVP, Lukaku (v), Benteke

My main concerns are Mannone, Burner and the two injury doubts in defense. Had Brayford for a while but just changed to Burner, is this the right call? Also I know Redmond isn't guarenteed minutes but he's my early season punt, so won't be ditching him.

      2. Shaw - is he fit. Already have southampton keeper, so why not go for Cuellar (Sunderland.)
      3. Collins - a doubt whether he is fit to start?
      4. Redmond - may not start. Not a great scoring record. Would be tempted to go for Koren who is on 6. pens, and start Kim this week as has an easier fixture.

      Dont like sunderland defence
I think your mid and defence is quite weak to accomodate RVP....
Whats the plan for getting 4 players out for gw3? 33m tied up in Ivan, Haz, Luk and Benteke and you dont have the subs to bench any of them!!!!

I like Mannone's fixture better than Boruc's, but Mannone does seem less certain to start, maybe hold him on the bench this week?

Well done fielding an RVP team without Anelka.

      I think its Sheeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiittt 😉

      Only kidding!

Team looks pretty good to me, I'd go for Coutinho over Gerrard, Not convinced by either Dzeko or Anelka but think Nolan is good value so can't really help there, and Mert for security of starts.

Team - good and different, differentials in Terry, Enrique and Nolan
Gerrard a far better player but Coutinho may just notch a few more goals this season...
Dzeko and Nolan to start (fixtures are good) Anelka and Michu better options after a few wks
Prefer Lescott. Arsenal look very weak with injuries and have an eye on these CL qualifiers too.

4 DGW players, Dzeko who may get rotated and Wally who is carrying a knock all in the same team! Far too risky IMO and will result in early WC.

      Thanks guys.

Decided to go with Gerrard over Cout for 3 reasons:
      1. 2nd game is against Villa his favourite team to score against (11 goals in 22 games)
      2. Club captain, so guaranteed to play 90 mins every game if fit.
      3. Penalty taker

Cheltenham and Plymouth have both had two tough games so far, which makes it hard to judge where they each stand.
I'd have to go with home advantage for The Robins.

Is no Suarez a problem for Coutinho - I suppose from some angles its a benefit, but I doubt it overall.

The absence of Suarez really weakens that attack imo
