On the eve of the new season, we roll our second analysis article on the Sky Sports game. After previously examining formations, we now turn our attention towards the Man of the Match (MOTM) recipients.

The MOTM award is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet – and warrants some attention when selecting our lineup. As the MOTM is given out by the Sky match reporter, and can often differ from the televised award, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets. Using last season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Most Awards Per Club

Firstly let’s take a look at the players who hogged the limelight and achieved the most Man of the Match awards for their respective clubs.

There are a number of significant points to note from our table:

  • There’s no sign of Robin Van Persie, who collected a paltry four MOTM awards in spite of his goalscoring heroics for United. So, while we can perhaps rely upon the Dutchman for goals, we shouldn’t expect a haul of supplementary points.
  • Man City seem to be the only team in the top seven without a stand-out performer; David Silva fared best with four MOTM awards.
  • Midfielders earned the most MOTM awards for five of the top six teams, highlighting that a midfielder who plies his trade for a side that generally tends to dominate matches, is most likely to receive the award.
  • In the bottom 11 teams, there were only two midfielders who claimed the most MOTM awards for their respective sides, highlighting that a defender or striker seems more likely to receive the award for a “lesser team”.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s now follow that up by taking a look at the players who gained five or more MOTM awards last season.

NameStartsMOTM Starts – MOTM %
Santi Cazorla371027%
Luis Suarez331030%
Wayne Rooney221045%
Gareth Bale33927%
Robert Snodgrass35925%
Ashley Williams37821%
Juan Mata31619%
Marouane Fellaini31619%
Frank Lampard21628%
Dimitar Berbatov32618%
Romelu Lukaku20630%
Ryan Shawcross37513%
James Collins29517%
Eden Hazard31516%
Steven Pienaar35514%

Most of the names in this table won’t come as a surprise due to their performances and accumulated points in 2012/13. Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting points, however:

  • Wayne Rooney achieved MOTM in a massive 45% of his games started.
  • Robert Snodgrass and Ashley Williams achieved a surprisingly large amount of MOTM awards.
  • With the futures of Rooney, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale uncertain, Santi Cazorla appears the stand-out ‘big hitter’ option once again.
  • Chelsea had three players with five or more MOTM awards apiece. Factor in the return of Romelu Lukaku and the potential signing of Rooney and it’s fair to say the awards could be spread even more evenly amongst Jose Mourinho’s side.

Awards By Position

Lastly we will take a look at which positions received the MOTM award the most times (excluding the relegated teams).

PositionTotal MOTM awards% of total MOTM
Goalkeeper154%
Defender7522%
Midfielder15747%
Forward8425%

These stats help to back up our previous article on formations, showing that once again midfielders come out on top. There is very little between forwards and defenders, whilst goalkeepers were rarely awarded MOTM awards.

Looking Forward

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”. However, combined with passing and tackling bonus, the chances of earning these awards can certainly help settle some internal struggles we may have when choosing between two players.

For example, in the contest of Santi Cazorla vs Theo Walcott, there is simply no comparison. Both produced 12 assists, while Walcott scored 14 goals to Cazorla’s 12, however, after factoring in the MOTM awards and bonus, Walcott finished on a total points haul of 174 (admittedly with less games) whilst Cazorla scored 262 points, 50 of which were from MOTM awards.

As for this season, we can expect similar trends to last. Expensive midfielders who play in “the hole” or advanced positions from the top teams should regularly receive MOTM gongs. For the lesser sides, their dominant defenders and match winning strikers will earn the plaudits. However, with an influx of some new big name forwards, we can perhaps expect that the frontmen to achieve a higher percentage of MOTM awards this time around.

This Season’s Benefactors

While we can anticipate that the patterns of awards may be similar, there are an array of players who could well emerge as stronger candidates this term.

If, as expected, David Silva is handed a regular role, and Man City’s new quartet of forwards start firing, we can anticipate the Spaniard to receive a lot more MOTM awards, in a similar vein to Cazorla for the Gunners. The possibility of Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho supporting the Liverpool attack should also see him established as a favourite – particularly if Luis Suarez is out of the picture at Anfield. Finally, on the other side of Merseyside, Kevin Mirallas is widely expected to play in an advanced position on the right of the Everton front three and could well make a dent in the awards handed to a deep-lying Marouane Fellaini.

Anyone want to help me with the first and only RMT I will post this season?

    Cech/Davis

    Kolo/Coleman/Dawson/(turner/ward)

    (Ben arfa)/Walcott/miraillas/hazard/Kim

    Sturridge/soldado/lukaku(C)

    Bank: 1.5

Thoughts: I had silva instead of HBA and a 4.5 instead of Kim but I feel that HBA would be a more interesting pick and new castles fixtures after GW1 are great.

Plan to transfer cech out for migs and lukaku out for giroud or maybe a city attacker

Should I go with benteke instead of sturridge and try to turn HBA into coutinho? Long term I would prefer sturridge over coutinho though...

Personally I'd revert to the Silva plan. Newcastle are shocking going forward. I would keep Sturridge though. Another option is sturridge +coutinho. IMO having a 'balanced' team is pointless. Nothing wrong with multiple Liverpool if you think both will start and have good potential

Newcastle are shocking going forward is harsh. Cabaye/Sissoko/BArfa/Gutierrez/Tiote form a decent midfield. Cissé if he recovers anything like his best form is a quality CF.

Well maybe that's more of a prediction for the season ahead. Of course I could be very wrong. Sissoko is more of a defensive player who was thrown into an attacking role. (See his career history). Tiote+Gutierrez also not the most imaginative. Little backup for cisse. I just feel it could be tough for them

Cissé nailed, HBA can be inconsistent. I actually think Sissoko might be the best pick. Cabaye will be good for a few as well this season.

I'd pick Cech over a defender only if I wasn't planning to transfer him out, the big advantage of a DGW with a playing backup is saving a transfer.

I'd use the the 1.5 to upgrade HBA to Michu or Coutinho.

I fear this is far too risky. I still have 2.5m in the bank for a potential rvp move later with some moving about, but two front line strikers to be rotated with no decent bench is unnerving. Advice?

    Cech (boruc)
    Mert-toure-Reid (baker, ward)

Holding 2.5 mil may be unnecessary. If you decide against rvp you end up with a squad that needs a lot of upgrading. If desperate, getting rvp can be a case of hazard plus soldado for rvp + 5m. No cash needed

Need your opinions please... RVP team vs non-RVP team, which do you prefer?

    RVP team:

    Mignolet, Davis
    Ivanovic, Ward, B.Turner, Coleman, Chester
    Hazard, Kim, Coutinho, Tonev, Mirallas
    RVP, Lukaku, Benteke

    Non RVP team:
    Mignolet, Boruc
    Ivanovic, Olsson, Mert, Coleman, Chester
Hazard, Ben Arfa, Coutinho, Tonev, Mirallas
    Soldado, Lukaku, Benteke
    ...

If I take the non-RVP team, I won't have him or any Man United player for several gameweeks. Would it hurt me a lot?

I have to say that is pretty horrible! Starting with a 4.0 and Anelka and Mulumbu with nothing left on your bench. You can't do the big 5 you have and just ignore the other 10 squad members for me.

Its all about the rotation and not the player. Foster rotates insanely well with Boruc.

      Your first 19 GW's is this: SOT-SUN-SWA-WHU-SUN-CPL-SWA-sto-FUL-CPL-HUL-AVL-new-AVL NOR-car-HUL-car-whu

More or less decided on this team but still open for suggestions:

    Migs (Davis)
Ivanovic - Mertesacker - Coleman (Reid - Chester)
Hazard - Walcott - Silva - Mirallas (Kim)
    Lukaku - Anelka - Soldado

Thinking of this for GW 2:

    A) get Silva now, Lukaku -> Sturridge

    or

    B) get Coutinho now, Lukaku -> Dzeko with more funds to spare

    vote pls. Thanks

Don't see anything new in the Japan store but may be something in the UK. Check with others before you buy, I found it a waste of money and never used it.

Totalfpl is good for live score changes and the rivals feature lets you keep track of your rivals. Hope it's ok to post this as ffs doesn't offer this, mod me if not...

If I knew Navas would start every match or if Silva had slightly more goal scoring potential, I would love both of them, but it's just not quite there in either case. Am I wrong on Navas?

i think navas should generally start every game, but his stats worry me. only scored one goal last season I think.

I would have silva right away but since he's being pushed out wide, I refuse to put him in

Not at all. Opening fixtures are not that hot imo. If people think Stoke are going to lie down at Anfield tomorrow with a new manager at the helm, they are deluded.

I'm really struggling with my team, and after spending the past month in the 'no RVP' camp, I think I've decided to change my mind.

Mainly because I can't see many other forwards that are nailed on or look that appealing.

Dzeko: Great price, but not guaranteed games.
Bony: Not great early fixtures, should leave him alone right now and assess his performances
Benteke: Expensive for a Villa player
Soldado: Expensive for an unknown FPL player, and spurs under AVB don't really score loads
    Sturidge: Injury and position concerns

    blah blah etc.

RVP is expensive, but he's fixture proof, and one of the few viable low risk options imo. Not to mention I'd need to somehow shift my team to get him in for gw4 anyway, why not just start with him?

There are no position concerns over Sturridge! Or long term injury concerns. RVP has one of the worst injury histories of any player. If Sturridge gets injured you swap him out........what do you do if something happens to RVP????

Spurs scored the joint 5th most goals last season......equal with City! Soldado is proven in Spain year on year and in Europe and internationally.

Lambert is proven in the Prem and only priced at 7.5m

Bony is nailed and will come good once fixtures clear up

Really torn between having Coutinho and JRod

I guess the usual argument is Coutinho for assists and Sturridge for goals?
