Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

They took the points home in a not so convincing game. Obviously missing a creative midfielder.

Soldado looked solid. Was dangerous in the box but didn't get enough shots on target to know for certain that he'll end up in the top 3-5. Class penalty.

Capoue impressed me the most today when he came on, tho not a FPL prospect as he plays to deep.

Well, as you can expect, the defense was good, very solid. The attack, as always, not so. Rose is very good, I wanted him but he's a midfielder in the Fantasy. The best player was Vertonghen, of course, but Rose after him. Then, Capoue and Paulinho.

The attack, not so good. Soldado is gonna be scoring whenever the ball falls into the penalty area, I think, but I'm not so sure about Chadli. He's got great skill, but right now he looks awfully not gelled with the offensive tactics, if they have any. Sigurdsson, pretty OK, could score something. Lennon, by far the worst.

Spurs looked pretty clueless while Palace were sat back. Soldado looks competent rather than amazing, but he'd probably be better if Tottenham had any creativity in midfield.

Palace carelessly gave away a penalty, which Soldado scored, and Spurs looked a lot more threatening when the game opened up afterwards. I think they'll score plenty of goals against teams which aren't playing for a 0-0 draw, but I reckon they'll probably concede plenty too. I don't rate their back four, though they do have plenty of great defensive mids which will help.

Hits aren't necessarily "bad" as long as well have a net gain, right?

This is even easier to pull off / justify with a DGW player who has a blank around the corner.

I'll bet that Coleman & Soldado -4pts will come out ahead vs. Ivanovic & Lukaku Away @ Utd.

As always, I like to play without choosing anyone with 10% ownership, so pretty pleased with 68 points (and Kompany and maybe some Chelsea players to go). Giroud is no van Persie, of course, but he's closer than some think, I think he'll score regularly. But I already see that probably it's not a safe choice to have De Bruyne and Kagawa, both probably will be rested a lot.

OK, I understand where you're coming from but, we should look at the underlying stats & not the fantasy score...

Coleman had 2 key passes, 3 crosses & 1 tackle.
Baines had 5 key passes, 12 crosses & 3 tackles.

I think Baines doubling Coleman in each of these KPIs coupled with his production over the last three years more than makes up for that 2.5mil sir.

Maybe. I think it's a big ask for him to score 50ish more attacking points than Coleman over the season (to justify the price difference), but it's possible. A case could be made for them both offering good value if they continue to be so attacking.

It's a great team and a good score. Why you jumping the Barkly bandwagon, Binning Lukaku is probably more sensible.

Not me, Hazard created a chance every 15.5 minutes (thats better than coutinho) and had a chance every 31 minutes. Hazard is a safe pick for next week still.

I don't think today's CHE team selection tells us much. Let's see who Jose picks for the AV and MU games. Today saw De Bruyne, Cahill, Torres start - felt like a weakened team selected to play Hull.

Any members/admins able to tell me how the RMT in members section decides who to bench?? I have Migs and Harper as two GKs.
RMT automatically chooses Migs (3.43 rating) for bench and harper (0.09) to start...

    Whaaaa??

Everyone should avoid knee-jerking based on what we've seen so far. Stay calm - your judgement in putting together a good team is still valid. Remember that next week a whole different slate of players will perform well and our knee-jerks will be in a completely different direction. You need to wait at least until the end of the transfer window before undertaking major engineering on your team.

      a) Terry -> Clichy, or
      b) Lukaku -> Lambert/Dzeko

These look like my best moves this week given I plan to WC after GW3. Which do you reckon is best?

      Boruc
      Zaba, Toure, Terry
      Hazard, Walcott, Silva, Mirallas
      Sturridge, Soldado, Lukaku

just do 1 of them. unless you want to replace lukaku with a more epensive player by downgrading kos. even in that case id still only do 1 transfer this week.

Chill out with the Lukaku hate. He plays again and against villa's defence, which is one of the main reasons he was worth having.

I think the main issue is the uncertainty around his starting role. Given his preseason and form last year I think a few of us (myself included) thought he would be the main man and the front spot was his to lose. Far too much rotation looks likely, so he probably has to go imo (regardless of what he does against Villa)

yeah agreed that his place is too shaky, I just meant the anger was premature. His pending fixture is one of the main reasons he was a great option and everyone seems to be ignoring this

Albeit he is excellent at this game, he usually starts very slow - got a bit lucky with colleman and mig pen save and that's about it.
