City run riot against a sorry Newcastle, with Edin Dzeko the standout protagonist and fit-again Sergio Aguero amongst the scorers. Three of Manuel Pellegrini’s midfielders grab a goal apiece, though City may have issues at the back ahead of the weekend trip to Cardiff. For Alan Pardew, the concerns of last season are far from over:

Pellegrini Praise for Dzeko
He may not have found the net last night but Edin Dzeko produced plenty to demonstrate his new manager’s show of faith. The Bosnian picked up an assist and the Man of the Match award for a display that tormented Newcastle from start to finish – he produced eight efforts on goal and was defied time and again by the heroics of Tim Krul. With a trip to Cardiff and home game against Hull up next for City, his confident showing made a persuasive case for inclusion in our Fantasy squads and looks an in-form solution for those looking to ditch Romelu Lukaku.

Dzeko deservedly earned Pellegrini’s plaudits after the game but with Alvaro Negredo afforded a brief sub appearance and Stevan Jovetic omitted from the squad entirely, there’s still a danger he will be rotated, as his manager once again underlined his plans to utilise the depth of his squad over the campaign:

“I trust Edin Dzeko, it was a pity he didn’t score because he had a lot of chances and he played very well. We knew with the ball that he’s a very good player but I think he played very well without the ball tonight. He had some important chances and he deserved to score today. I spoke to him when I first arrived and I told him that he will do very well for us. I am sure we are now going to see the Edin Dzeko that City bought from Wolfsburg two years ago…I’m sure when Jovetic and Negredo come in and play 90 minutes they will do very well too. I’m very happy with the squad we have this season; we will need all of them.”

Options Aplenty for City
The return of Sergio Aguero to the first-team fold was something of a surprise after the Argentine failed to feature over the summer period but he wasted little time in serving a reminder of his attacking capabilities. A goal and assist, with the maximum bonus points also accrued, proved a decent night’s work before he made way on the hour mark, with Pellegrini careful not to over-exert him. With a six-day break until the trip to Cardiff, Aguero looks to be in the driving seat to continue up top – as his 12 point haul against the Magpies showed, he looks a real captaincy contender over those upcoming pair of fixtures.

With goals from midfield trio David Silva, Yaya Toure and substitute Samir Nasri – on for Aguero as Pellegrini switched from 4-2-2-2 to 4-2-3-1 – the arrival of Pellegrini looks to have reinvigorated City’s attacking options after they stuttered to just 66 goals in Roberto Mancini’s final term at the helm. While a more open, expansive style of play will bring Fantasy investors flocking, picking through Pellegrini’s various options from one week to the next could prove tricky – nevertheless, Fantasy managers eyeing up an exit route for Eden Hazard in light of Chelsea’s trip to United and following blank are likely to be swayed by last night’s performance, with Silva looking particularly dangerous in a dazzling display on the left.

Worries at the Back for Pellegrini
City went into last night’s opener without Matija Nastasic, allowing Joleon Lescott the chance to partner Vincent Kompany in the heart of the back-four. While Pellegrini’s side opened their campaign with a clean sheet, they don’t have their problems to seek ahead of Sunday’s trip to Cardiff after the Belgian was subbed off with a groin problem midway through the second period. Kompany will be assessed by the club’s doctors today to ascertain the extent of the problem and in a post-match interview, Pellegrini admitted he is uncertain over the severity:

“We will see what happens with Vincent tomorrow – the doctors will look and then we will find out how many days he may miss. I can’t tell you exactly what happened. It may be a serious injury, it may be nothing – I don’t know.”

Certainly, if the Belgian is forced onto the sidelines, Lescott’s security of starts looks greater right now, though reports have indicated Nastasic is expected to return to training this week and could be in line for a return at Cardiff. With Micah Richards admitting via twitter he is out “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury, Pellegrini could turn to Javi Garcia to partner Lescott if both Kompany and Nastasic fail to recover in time.

Problems Pile Up for Pardew
The Magpies arrived at the Etihad on the back of Arsenal’s bid for Yohan Cabaye, with the Frenchman resultantly left out of the matchday squad. They ended it bottom of the league and devoid of Steven Taylor’s services after the centre-half earned a straight red card for violent conduct. Taylor is now set to miss the next three matches (Gameweeks 2 and 3 and next week’s Capital One Cup clash with Morecambe), with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – filling in for the injured Davide Santon at left-back – likely to move into the middle to partner Fabricio Coloccini. With Jonas Gutierrez subbed off just before the break due to a hamstring issue and Cabaye potentially on his way, Alan Pardew is also facing a real headache in midfield ahead of the weekend – the Magpies have one of the best schedules of any side over the next four (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) but with confidence low on Tyneside, Fantasy managers will be somewhat reluctant to take a punt.

Not sure which route would be safer

    a) keep lukaku for gw2 and monitor city forward situation, then lukaku => someone who looks nailed on to start gw3 and captain him

    b) just do lukaku => aguero now and hope that even if he starts gw2, he will start also gw3

I asked it yesterday, and since all the brain surgeons are on at the moment....

Many are planning on WC after gw 4. Those aren't, better look at the fixtures anyway...

What would your 2 strikers be to accompany Rvp in gw4->

    Berba/Bent: WBA/chel/CAR/STOKE
    Soldado:NOR/car/CHEL/WEST
    Sturridge:swans/SOUTH/sun/CRYS
    Lambert/Osvaldo:WEST/livp/CRYS/SWANS
Bony:LIVP/crys/ARS/south...after which it really gets good...

    Thoughts?

Just to clarify for everyone, Lukaku is not at around 56% as FISO claims.

He is actually at around 47,160-1,384= 45,776 NTO /52000 which is 88%.

Price fall tonight may yet happen.

      As an Arsenal fan:

      - I think Bale must be going, or otherwise Levy has had a character-changing brain injury.
      - After being pretty sure for the whole of the last 2 seasons we would finish above Spurs, I have lost faith. Even if they lose Bale.

Not so much quaking as crying tbh 🙁

Probably. Nasty would have been Komp partner last season, hard to say with Pele, not had to make the call yet. Nasty unlikely to make CSAR game, I would think, and with Komp out for a bit, Joleon looks very good for next 2-3 games at least I'd say. Beyond that, anybody's guess.

Hazard - Zaha - Snodgrass - Wally (Poz)

I'm tempted by this also. Unless Sinclair somehow gets a look in, Navas is the only one that offers a pacey direct style that City seemed desperate for last season when the one-twos didn't come off. Reckon he'll play every game out on the right. Fighting the urge to go with both him and Silva for a short while.

Agree with this. Yaya has pretty much averaged 140 ish ponts for the last few seasons, all at a price of about 8m. This season he is 8.5m, and perhaps (very perhaps) sitting deeper.

8.5m for a score previously worth 8m, and potentially even less. Silva is 0.5m more and if City are going to rack up the points (thus Yaya may get a few) surely Silva is going to be involved in more and perhaps end on 30-40 points more than his only slightly cheaper team-mate.

      No value in midfield.

Dzeko is by far the standout option until he gets dropped. Dzeko if you have RVP, Aguero if you don't. The only reason I say that is because I'd be much happier captaining Aguero than Dzeko -and captaining Aguero justifies the price difference- but if you have RVP then you won't need to captain Dzeko anyway.

I put my money on Yaya Toure and Hart. They are both expensive options for their roles, but they are as nailed on as you can get with Man City and not too injury prone. In Yaya's favour there is no African cup of Nations this year to tire him out and Ramadan has just concluded. I am happy with them for the moment and in a long term thinking strategy.

And why would Sky Italy know this, you may ask, and that is a fair point - although it has to be said that they reported that Pep Guardiola was joining Bayern Munich long, long before anyone else. So they have been right before.'

So, one good guess out of GOd knows how many bad ones... brilliant

Would RVP to aguero for the next 2 be a mad move?

im WC after GW3 so the points that I rack up for 2 weeks could be worth it with his fixtures CAR & HUL vs RVPs CHE & LIV

I have the same feeling however, against CHE and LIV he is maybe guaranteed 1 or 2 but aguero against a week newly promoted def of CAR and HUL would be mad not to miss out on that?! plus the funds freed up could help my midfield out temporarily.

As I said im WC after GW3 obviously i will bring RVP back in and thats where he would stay!! 😀

        am I mad?

I'd say that if United score, RVP scores. City could score 6 without Aguero getting a look in.

Whilst I'd agree City's fixtures look ripe for goals, there is no guarantee on who gets those goals (and assists).

RVP has already scored 2, not sure dropping anyone (especially RVP) after scoring 2 and looking sharp is a wise move.

Only do it if the extra money is essential to your plans.

Could I just get a little info on the Lukaku anti-wagon?
I feel Torres may have just been given a game as he had rested more than Lukaku and Mourinho saw Villa as a tougher game. Thousands are getting rid of him before seeing him even start a game, that's a bit odd. We may find out soon that he's nailed on.
Lukaku is Mourinho's wet dream, I'm sure at Real Madrid, all he wanted to see was the big Belgian knocking a skinny little defender to the ground with out even realising he was there. And then maybe making him breakfast.
How terrible his weekend game is against United, the almighty, what ever will the young, inexperienced lad do? Well a hat trick sufficed in his last meeting with them. I'm sure Mourinho is all to aware of Lukaku's escapades against their rickety back line. He is tailor made for destruction, and this demolition man is about to be released.

Do you think he will start vs Utd ? One full season in the top flight and he is twenty. There is a world of difference between starting vs Utd at the end of a season and starting against them in a potential title decider.

He will start against United. He was quite simply a battering ram against them last time round, simply dismissing defenders as if they weren't even there. Ferguson himself said their defenders might have nightmares about him after that game.

There's very little Lukaku anti-wagon. Just that he'll be out for GW3 and looks not so nailed-on as alternatives right now, especially Dzeko.

Like you I don't understand the fear for the United game. They'll concede but Chelsea will definitely score. They're Chelsea FC not The Dog and Duck Sunday League best 11 😉

Why do they keep trying to buy another striker then?

Because they are a top team. City, UTD, they have 4 strikers and good ones. Chelsea's front line I think we can all agree has been a little suspect for a while. Ba is not cutting the mustard and although Torres is looking sharp, he's not looking like a goal scorer.
