Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

    Migs, Harper
    Zab, IVAN, Coleman, Chester, Turner
    Walcott, Mirallas, Cout, HAZ, Kim
    Soldado, Lambert, Dzeko

What would you do with this team this coming gameweek?

Extremely similar to my own team.

I'm probably doing Iva > Chester and Haz > Brady/Whittingham, before bringing in RVP for Dzeko the week after.

You don't actually have to do anything:

      Migs
      Zab - Coleman - Turner
      Walcott - Mirallas - Cout - Kim
      Same 3

      save the transfer 🙂

Okay guys, I need some help.

    OUT:

Foster, Boruc, Ivanovic, M.Turner, Hazard, Coutinho, Williams, Soldado, Dzeko, Lambert.

    IN:

Mignolet, Harper/Davis, Chester, B.Turner, Silva, Brady, Whittingham, Aguero, Sturridge, Giroud.

Leaving 3m in the bank for Aguero > RVP in GW4.

Is this worth a wildcard? (I'm currently thinking no, just need some opinions)

I thought Dzeko getting subbed off after scoring gave me something positive about his chances of starting or at least playing in the next game.
Had he been subbed off without scoring it would be a different matter. Aguero was subbed off last week and I don't remember any panic.

He stays in my team for the foreseeable and none of the idiot comments we've seen all day today will change that.

    Migs (Davis)
    Zab, Coleman, Ward (Toure, Terry)
    Walcott, Mirallas, Cout, Silva (Morrison)
    Soldado, Dzeko, Lukaku

    I’m looking at Lukaku + Cout OUT – Sturridge + Nolas/Chadli/Paulinho in.

At the moment I’m leaning more towards Paulinho. Thoughts?

Good job Soldado is on pens otherwise a lot of people would be getting rid I feel. For now I'll keep as Spurs' fixtures are good.

People who see Dzeko being subbed as a positive sign that he will start next week are kidding themselves imo... He was pretty poor apart from his goal

The goal was one of very few touches. I don't think the sub means he is nailed on but if you go by what Pele's been saying he's done enough to keep his place

Yes he looked a little more static than last week. But you have to take into account the whole team performance. When it mattered he gave the team the lead.

Cardiff done well at closing them down and not giving them any space. City seemed to be lost with how to break them down, Great performance by Cardiff, they got it spot on today.

Completely up in the air, as the majority of the Man City players were pretty poor also. I wouldn't want to guess which 2 strikers will start - but not sure I'll be captaining Aguero.

Wasn't really that he played poorly as such but there was pretty much 0 service too him, IMO Yaya/aguero/navas were all poor today

Ouch I've slipped down to an overall rank of 1,385,563 hopefully will be going up quite a bit after tomorrow, Hazard and RVP(c) still to play. It's a marathon not a sprint

    Mignolet
    Ivanovic/Lescott/Toure
    Navas/Ben Arfa/Coutinho/Silva
    Soldado/Benteke/Lambert
    Subs: Davis, Whittaker, Shelvey, Baker

Subs for next week I'm thinking either:
    A) Mignolet to Jussi
    B) Ivanovic to Coleman
    C) Coutinho to Nolan

2 FT for this week.. 0m in the bank

    Mignolet / K. Davis
    Ivanovic / Coleman / Mertesacker / Chester / Turner
    Snodgrass / Morrison / Walcott / Coutinho / Hazard
    Benteke / Soldado / Lambert

    Thanks!

I guess your thinking of getting rid of either Benteke or Hazard for GW3?

      repost to BAA

drop Snodgrass for J.Morrision/Kim/Barkley/Whittingham/Brady, someone cheaper to give you flexibility to make 2FTs during the int'l break when many will WC (and allowing you to hold your WC)

after GW3, would consider going from Coutinho to either Michu or Silva - Coutinho is better with assists than goals, and the new bonus system is not friendly to assists

other FT after GW3 you'll know better then

Struggling for a GW3 team here. Sitting on Shaw & Cabral in my first 11 who wont necessarily play. Looks like im gonna be forced to get rid of Hazard & Bentekers for a hit....

Silva & either Dzeko or Giroud.
