Chelsea draw up to Old Trafford without a centre-forward but with a gameplan; they execute it perfectly. Jose Mourinho’s side defend stoutly to restrict United to scraps as Gameweek 2’s headline fixture falls flat.

The Game Changer

We were screaming out for a match winner to emerge, only to be left disappointed. Chelsea set out to stifle and frustrate United and succeeded in keeping them at arms length. Robin van Persie was starved of opportunities, Wayne Rooney, back in the United lineup, was restricted to long-range efforts. In an encounter billed as the first true heavyweight clash of the season, we were treated to a disjointed match, littered with misplaced passes and bereft of goalscoring opportunities. That won’t trouble Jose Mourinho and his determined defence.

The Underused

Rooney’s performance underlined what he brings to United. Strength, energy, craft and a goal threat – he will surely be a major player for Moyes, if, as expected he now remains at the club. Owned by under 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to be a huge differential should he cement his start under Moyes and begin to show the form he demonstrated for periods of last season.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s return to the fray will immediately pose questions over Danny Welbeck’s appeal. Having notched a brace at the Liberty Stadium, Welbeck has attracted big investment with over 90,000 having their head turned by the potential of United attacking player for 7.5. While Welbeck partnered Van Persie in a central role for much of tonight’s game, with so many options on the flanks and Shinji Kagawa to introduce, should he stay, Rooney would seem destined to tuck back inside on a permanent basis to renew his partnership with Van Persie.

The Dutchman’s owners will also be fidgeting at the prospect of Rooney’s return. Tonight’s blank would have come as a major frustration for those who handed Van Persie the armband and now, the prospect of Rooney emerging as a clear alternative in United’s attack will pose familiar questions.

A player of Rooney’s talent, offering coverage of United’s potential for goals, for 3.5 less – it’s a scenario that has to be considered by those with and without Van Persie. However, with so much to be decided in the transfer market in the next week and potential movement in and out of Old Trafford, the landscape could yet change once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

New bonus system or not; the game is still about having the players scoring the most points (and/or provides the best point/price value).

        This.

I think it's a welcome change frankly, defenders didn't get much points, all they had were clean sheets (in case of most CBs). Mids scoring again would make the BPS competitive again.

Yeah I would rather the defenders get their dues too. Would you rather have Vidic on your team or JRod? In real life this is a no brainer.

Actually there haven't been. There's been just one more CS through 2 GWs than last season, and last season had one fewer game.

Scoring is down a ton (almost 0.8 goals per game across both teams) but that has resulted in fewer big x-nil victories, not more clean sheets,

        For now...

its interesting that Ivanovic is never in favour when it comes to bps. He's a popular DGWer that mightn't be as necessary.

Not overly concerned. As a RB, he has potential for attacking points while, as CB, he'll pick up the defensive BPS.

    Hello people... 🙂
How is this look like for a WC ? Should I do it?

    Szczesny, Lewis
    Coleman Toure Walker Chester Moxey
    Walcott Mirallas Paulinho Coutinho Barkley
    RVP Campbell Sturridge

Thinking also of downgrading GK and ugrading Coutinho for Hazard because of no Chelsea at all... Or maybe go wiyh Silva instead...
    Thanks friends...

For those that missed it earlier.

49 is safe with no hits in Early Bird, 54 with 1 hit.
39 is safe in LMS, with probably get lower after hits are locked into.
Just under 400 left in EB and 1000 in LMS.

I agree. Ive been wanting to post that all day. People need to relax and stop taking -4 constantly for shuffling midfielders. Its been two games with a lot of clean sheets, it wont stay like that forever. I also think that people are making decisions without actually watching the games. Like you said, Walcott looked great and could have easily had a brace. There were others that were the same, and yet people are offloading them for -4 just because they havent scored yet.

It's only my first year in FPL and Ive enjoyed quite a bit of luck so far, but one thing I know is that I would rather not knowingly take a -4 unless something is really amiss in my lineup. -4 is your defenders clean sheet or your forwards goal wiped away. Just my thoughts.

If money is no object then Michu. Toure is a DM these days. Paulinho was GW1...let's see what formation is chosen going forward. Nolan is adequate but West Ham is underwhelming. Michu remains the primary attacking threat on a league average offense.

Also, West Brom have not kept a clean sheet at home in their last 11 HOME games and Ben Foster could be potential side lined.

        Not true. Midfielders have yet to start scoring/assisting and the BPS is being affected. Look at the popular midfielders for example;

        Walcott - 0 goals, 1 assist
        Michu - 0 goals, 0 assists
        Coutinho - 0 goals, 0 assists
        Hazard - 0 goals, 1 assist
        Mirallas - 0 goals, 0 assists

This won't continue, and when they start getting their goals/assists they will get baps.

Well last season Walcott managed a goal/assist per 84.67 minutes, Hazard per 105.04.

In the opening 2 GW's Walcott 1 assist in 180 minutes, Hazard 1 assist in 270. Not great. 2 GW's is nothing though.

I think this new midfielder BPS curse is a red herring. The reason MIDs aren't getting BAPS is they aren't scoring goals. MIDs have a total of 13 goals across 21 matches. Last year, MIDs had 29 through 20 matches across the first two Gameweeks. Hardly comparable.

For a test, go look at the BPS recorded by MIDs who have scored this season. I think you'll be surprised.

I would make a plan to upgrade one of Kim/Brady into a more viable 4th midfield starter. Maybe downgrade Hazard to someone like Nolan to free up some funds? I personally would not be comfortable starting one of Kim, Brady, and your 4th best defender every week.

This is good to know Triggs. Thanks. 50 points cramped up for 1.2 Mil places ain't too bad eh.

Just my cash league leader has taken the season by strom. 170+ points and he's got Robin as well.

Complete contrasting to last season. I'm up for this kind of challenge though. My head is calm at the moment. Not panicking one bit.
