Gameweek 2 stutters to a close with a cagey night of football at Old Trafford. Robin Van Persie owners are left frustrated as Chelsea register another clean sheet to keep the Dutchman quiet, while Juan Mata owners will be contemplating a transfer out after the Spaniard, along with Romelu Lukaku, warmed the bench for the entire 90 minutes.

Van Persie Draws a Rare Blank
The Dutchman’s failure to produce last night proved significant right across the Fantasy games. Van Persie had started the season with two goals against Wigan in the Community Shield and followed that up with a brace against Swansea as David Moyes’ side racked up a comprehensive win at the Liberty – as a result, he was the most popular captain and vice-captain in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game for Gameweek 2. With Wayne Rooney back in the starting line-up and tucking in behind, the omens looked good for Van Persie but, in something of a rarity, he was well-marshalled by the opposition defence and failed to register a single effort on target over the 90 minutes.

A trip to Anfield now beckons and with the Reds yet to concede this season, some will be contemplating switching the armband this weekend after last night’s disappointment. In a week that has seen Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Soldado and Olivier Giroud continue their goalscoring exploits, and with Christian Benteke quickly off the mark, those who opted to go without the Dutchman breathed a sigh of relief, while after the game, his manager cited the hosts’ lack of creativity as reason for Van Persie’s off-night:

“We lacked a little bit of cutting edge in the final pass or cross tonight..We went with three forward players as we wanted to try to make sure we won the game. There will be lots of games where I’ll decide not to play an attacking team, but that won’t make me a defensive coach. Just like tonight doesn’t make me an attacking coach. Tonight we felt that was the best approach. We did everything we could, we just lacked a ball to get Robin [van Persie] away for a chance to score, or Danny [Welbeck] that opportunity. We had one or two close calls, but it just wasn’t going to go in tonight.”

Mourinho Shuffles Up Front
Once again, the Chelsea teamsheet caught Fantasy managers by surprise as Jose Mourinho altered his options up top. Having started with Fernando Torres then Demba Ba over the two Gameweek 1 matches, Mourinho fielded new boy Andre Schurrle up front and omitted the Senegal striker from the squad altogether – leaving Romelu Lukaku as an unused sub, despite the Belgian registering a hat-trick against United for West Brom on the final day of last season.

While that move may have raised an eyebrow or two, the decision to also leave Juan Mata on the bench for the entire game was a real shocker. Even when he chose to replace Kevin De Bruyne on the hour mark, it was Torres who was handed the chance, with a personnel reshuffle allowing the Spaniard to lead the line as Schurrle dropped back into the attacking midfield three. With Mata and Lukaku playing just 65 and 40 minutes respectively over the three games so far, the duo are in danger of becoming peripheral figures under the new Blues boss – Mourinho explained his four attacking starters afforded him more “mobility” before commenting on his reason for omitting Mata post-match:

“He had a very small pre-season after the Confederations Cup, during that small pre-season he was injured. He started training two days before we played the first Premier League match, and had a match last week against Aston Villa, a difficult one, and today I decided to put him on the bench. I played with De Bruyne on the right because I know De Bruyne will give complete control of Evra defensively. When Juan plays on the right he comes more inside. I don’t say the kid is more tactically disciplined but is more adapted to that situation. I wanted Oscar to play behind the striker so I decided not to play Juan. Minute 70, 75, I was feeling [it was] difficult to win, I don’t want to lose, so I made the changes to control the last few minutes of the game, but no chance Juan goes anywhere.”

Blues Remain Resolute
While Mourinho’s selection up top continues to alternate, the Chelsea defence has been remarkably consistent. With their first three league games taking place over eight days, many had anticipated a degree of rest and rotation but the same four have started every game in front of Petr Cech, with John Terry and Gary Cahill forging a solid partnership at the heart of defence. The knee injury worries which saw Rafa Benitez continually rotate the Chelsea skipper last term seem to be behind Terry and with a relatively budget friendly price, his security of starts is likely to see him pick up new investors once the blank is out of the way. It’s just one goal against in three so far under Mourinho, then; it’s also worth noting that, despite conceding to Christian Benteke last Wednesday, the Blues backline limited the Belgian to a single strike all game – a sign they are returning to the resilience of old demonstrated during The “Special One’s” first spell at the helm.

Both are same odds for anytime goalscorer so probay similar threats this week. Long term I'd probably go with Giroud simply cos I can see more goals in Arsenal and Giroud will get his share.

I'm selling Benteke this week to bring in Giroud. But will also have Soldado.

I have both, but would not trade Soldado for Giroud. Admittedly Soldado only had one shot all game - Spurs need to sort the formation out as Soldado benefits from a playmaker behind him (as at Valencia). However he is on penalties. Arsenal may move for a new striker and Podolski did well on Saturday.

What I don't understand is why is Mourinho so desperate to sign Rooney?

Rooney wants the guarantee of first team football yet will fall into the same rotation trap that Torres, Ba and Lukaku find themselves in... Not to mention the ongoing attacking midfielder rotation.

From the outside looking in, with just RvP to compete against and the ability to play in the hole, surely Rooney is more likely to play a full 90 in a Man U shirt than a Chelsea one?

I admire Barca because they always try to win . I do not like Stoke , West Ham etc because they set themselves up not to lose. I think setting yourself up not to lose is anti football because the game was originally set up to be entertaining . This can be seen by the fact that having a back four or even back five the sweeper and the defensive midfielder are new developments.

I'm not saying teams should not learn how to defend , I am not saying setting yourself up not to lose is not effective Chelsea proved that by winning the Champions League, Barca have an attacking philosophy more then not being able to defend . My point is football was set up to be a free flowing attacking game and setting yourself up not to lose goes against the ethos of the game

I don't feel like both teams were playing that defensively, but their attacking efforts were just really poorly executed. Game was littered with terrible direct passes, and the movements weren't as good they as they could have been.

That said, I love "defensive football" and quality defending.

How much game time do you lot see Welbeck and Valencia getting in the next 5 GWs?

As a non-RVP owner I would love to have some United coverage, and Valencia's performance last night along with Welbeck's game the week before make these two my best options for the weeks ahead IMO.

Do people think that Welbeck can nail down that LW spot, or with Young's return will he become an impact sub for Rooney just to spice things up towards the end of the game?

Or will Valencia be rotated with Young/Giggs/Kagawa every week, making his inclusion pretty useless?

Any other ideas for United coverage as well? Let me know.

If Rooney stays, I think he'll be the most value for money. If Vidic plays week in, week out, he'll also be great value.

I'm keeping well clear of the United midfield. I'm gonna have to wait and see how Moyes rotates, and even then I'm not convinced of the players available. Valencia was lively but had absolutely no end product, and Welbeck was back to his usual self of not hitting a barn door.

As for Vidic, any 1-0 or 2-0 wins and he'll be raking in those 3 baps. Makes a clean sheet so much more valuable.

I wanted to mute the match last night. Why can't... that guy... think of a whole sentence... before he starts... instead of talking.... like this?

Wish I could turn off the commentators and just have the crowd noise.

Regarding Vidic, yup. He's made for this bonus system. And if he can score 4-ish goals on corner, we're good to go!

And you're right about Rooney, really. He was frustrating as all hell last season because of that, and I think he'll be of much greater value at Chelsea than at United.

Man Utd provide more selection headaches than their rivals from across the city.

Man Ure's defence is a pretty safe investment. There are too many questions over their attack.

Interesting to read Mourinho's comments re: Mata. I knew he'd been left out of the team due to fatigue after confed cup but suggesting De Bruyne could be preferred when the opposition's LWB is a threat e.g. Evra. I thought Mata would be rotation-proof when he comes back..

Mourinho had previously said he saw Mata as playing as an inverted winger/wide player on the right. Looks good for Oscar in the central position behind the striker. Oscar is the new Mata.

Yeah, that's much of the reason why I bought Silva before GW3. Almost everyone in my ML has him, so it's just too big of a risk to not bring him in.

That said, he looks like one of the best prospect on the mid right now.

RVP was hardly involved at all last night, mostly due to Chelsea's excellent defending, but also there were a couple of times when Rooney could have played him in but took the shot on himself instead.

Having said that, RVP was still the closest to scoring, denied by the tip of Ivanovic's (I think, could have been Terry) toe. It was a ridiculously tough chance aswell.

So I'm considering a -4 to get rid of both Hazard and Tonev before their prices fall (further). Question is, who to get?

I'm considering going for Sinclair + Brady. Sinclair has yet to get any real ownership so he won't fall quickly and will undoubtedly become a first team player eventually, no?

This would allow Giroud->rvp later on

Silva for consistency - I see the 6 pts trickling in on a weekly basis.
Paulinho for a punt on Spurs

Other midfielders -: Kim really impressed me for Cardiff. There are some other low budget midfeiders who raked in the fpl points, but didn't really see them much.

Coutinho and Walcott havent really impressed in Fpl terms.

Now that I think of it, midfield is not looking so attractive this year.
