With the Man City defence breached at Cardiff and Nikica Jelavic drawing a blank at home to West Brom, it was left to David Silva to bring in the points from last weekโ€™s picks. Even so, after a disappointing Gameweek, weโ€™re looking for a much-needed return to form as we scour the PlayON price list in search of some weekend bargains.

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a seasoned player, read on for our selection of early weekend targetsโ€ฆ

Gameweek 3 Player Picks

Goalkeeper โ€“ Boaz Myhill
Even with a clean sheet at Goodison last time out, the PlayON pricing algorithm has priced the West Brom rearguard rather kindly for their home fixture with Swansea. You can pick up Gareth McAuley cheaply (8.4m) in defence but Myhill in goal is even more of a bargain. Available for just 7.4m, he looks assured of his start following Ben Fosterโ€™s foot injury and will face a Swansea side at the Hawthorns thatโ€™s scored just a single goal so far this term.

Defender โ€“ Matija Nastasic
PlayON managers can take advantage of the early kick-off here. While Nastasic is far from certain to line up in the City defence at home to Hull, we should have the teamsheets early enough (you can make changes to your PlayON team right up to 12.35 tomorrow) to allow us to be certain and perhaps take advantage of his PlayON price of just 7.3m. Despite being exposed by Cardiff last weekend, the City defence at the Etihad is a different beast and well worthy of that level of investment. While Nastasic looks a steal, have a โ€œPlan Bโ€ at the ready if you have to swap him out when the teamsheet arrives.

Midfielder โ€“ Craig Gardner
Paolo Di Canio immediately recalled Gardner to his Black Catsโ€™ lineup for the trip to Southampton following his suspension. The all-action midfielder can be snapped up on PlayON for just 6.6m and looks a likely starter for the trip to Selhurst Park. Gardner loves a tackle so should collect points from defensive actions and is more than partial to a shot from distance. With Stephane Sessegnon reportedly left out of the Black Cats squad this weekend, Gardner could even be pushed up behind a lone striker in a 4-4-1-1.

Forward โ€“ Olivier Giroud
Once again, this is the most vital and, subsequently, trickiest area to find a bargain. PlayONโ€™s forward prices look tighter going into this weekend and Arsenalโ€™s Olivier Giroud is the first name to grab us as a potential bargain โ€“ although youโ€™ll need to shell out 11.4m to acquire him. Even so, with three goals to his name so far this season and Lukas Podolski ruled out, the Frenchman looks an assured starter in the North London derby: an encounter that is traditionally flooded with goals.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly fantasy football so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can change your team as many times as you like before the Live Matchday kicks-off โ€“ 12.35 tomorrow) you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, youโ€™ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge another player to a one-on-one game, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for ยฃ1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 67% win rate: we took a beating last week so this is a chance to kick us while we’re down.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a ยฃ2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open and the prize pot is building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates to play for free bragging rights or for cash. Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly. PlayON is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm seeing a 1-0 or 2-0 to City. I think Hull will aim entirely to shut them out. Lets face it, picking up points against City at the Etihad when you've just been promoted is a fairly massive task, aiming for a draw or at least to concede as little as possible is probably the wisest move.

I don't think they are that good. Chelsea were all over them in the first half hour and could've scored 4 or 5. They then were happy to just sit deep and defend for the rest of the game. Then they kept out Norwich, who are terrible going forward.

          Not convinced at all.

Could quite easily be a very low scoring game.

Hull will frustrate and keep it tight with the 3-5-2. Hull wont see these games as crucial to their survival, but every point counts. So Bruce will come and try and take a point. Which could be bad news for City, because they wont commit anything going forward, leaving no space for City to exploit. I can see City winning by a goal or two or a 0-0 or a 1-1 if City look dodgy defending on setpieces again. Hull will try and exploit this if they get the chance at corners and freekicks.

Hull looked shaky early on vs. Chelsea. But they settled down and did alright, then got a CS in the next game.

I fancy Hull to stop up as they will win a chunk of games boringly 1-0. Its the Steve Bruce effect.

I've been thinking....YES another van Persie discussion! ๐Ÿ˜†

Is the wildcard useless unless you draft van Persie in? Does this whole game revolve around one player? Are there any "nutters" out there that when they come to wildcard, wont draft van Persie in?

Is it just a coincidence that some top ranked players don't have him and didnt have him in stages last season?

When you look at van Persie's price this year and the prices of the other players. There is no way you can build the sort of team this year, similar to last.

Do you think we will see any people who own van Persie now, wildcard and take him out? ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

He's the best player in the game, it's as simple as that really. If you want a reliable pick that you can captain pretty much every week then pick him. If not then good luck to you.

There are ALWAYS other captain options though. van Persie is just the default captain option, but there will be times he lets you down, not even van Persie delivers every single game. More often than not though.

But there ARE other players and captain alternatives. No doubt about it.

        Benteke
        Aguero
        Rooney
        Silva
        Hazard
        Lampard
        Sturridge

He doesnt want to be there. End of.

I think I'll be captaining Benteke a lot this season. I would say Soldado, but apart from penalties, I haven't seen anything yet in a Spurs shirt to make me think he is a genuine captain option. His teammates are still learning him.

The argument is not really about whether RvP is the best player in the game or not...he is... imo the argument is about whether it's worth putting most of your eggs in one basket. If you can consistently find a cheap player to field that gets you points when RvP doesn't, then its great...but the rest of the squad is significantly weaker and when RvP doesn't come off you have a bad week.

RVP was £13m last year and was deemed too expensive by many. But then Michu and Fellaini emerged as budget enablers, and for quite a long time very few strikers came close to matching his points.

This year is different. He's £14m, no budget midfielders have looked like emerging - yet - and several expensive strikers are matching him.

So I'm WC-ing and not bringing him in. But I flip-flop that decision on an hourly basis ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'd say stats-wise, Walcott, Coutinho, Silva and even perhaps Oscar have shown willing. And the fact that he isn't completely outstripping the competition is enough for me to go without until I've got more spending power.

Remember Lambert was only 6 last year and Ba was pretty cheap. Suarez was the only other striker worth having at 9.5.

Baines was the only expensive defender worth having and even then he became a luxury. Other defenders were just punts and you could get away with ubers plus a STO.

Save the transfer this week - play Ward and you've Kim to come on if anyone's dropped (I fancy Kim to do well against the new more-expansive Everton)

I'm playing both Ward and Kim and I'm 50/50 really. I'd perhaps sway towards Kim if having to choose - there's fairly good odds on a Palace clean sheet but I don't think Holloway sets the team up particularly defensively. Plus Kim should have had an assist on Sunday against City - heard good things about him pre-season and looked like he might be getting into gear.

Oscar to Michu. Would make for a stronger team this week and would be better in the long term as well I'd say with Chelsea's new signings. Team looks good though. The other option is someone cheaper like Nolan and then using the spare money next GW to upgrade your strikers.

I've had Kev from start and see him coming good, EVE playing pretty well and chances will come. Not convinced about Nolan longer-term (fitness, age, Spammers likely low scorers), but he's a proven asset in fairness.

The one player in that price range to mull too is Pauly. He's looked very good early, gets forward a lot, and I mean a lot, often closest player to Soldo. 1 goal already from a late break into the box (albeit against poor oppo), but when players get consistently into good attacking positions, you should take note.

      Wenger is highly under rated.

Before sugar daddies arrived, he was the only manager capable of challenging Ferguson.

The others who have relied on money.
