With the Man City defence breached at Cardiff and Nikica Jelavic drawing a blank at home to West Brom, it was left to David Silva to bring in the points from last weekโ€™s picks. Even so, after a disappointing Gameweek, weโ€™re looking for a much-needed return to form as we scour the PlayON price list in search of some weekend bargains.

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a seasoned player, read on for our selection of early weekend targetsโ€ฆ

Gameweek 3 Player Picks

Goalkeeper โ€“ Boaz Myhill
Even with a clean sheet at Goodison last time out, the PlayON pricing algorithm has priced the West Brom rearguard rather kindly for their home fixture with Swansea. You can pick up Gareth McAuley cheaply (8.4m) in defence but Myhill in goal is even more of a bargain. Available for just 7.4m, he looks assured of his start following Ben Fosterโ€™s foot injury and will face a Swansea side at the Hawthorns thatโ€™s scored just a single goal so far this term.

Defender โ€“ Matija Nastasic
PlayON managers can take advantage of the early kick-off here. While Nastasic is far from certain to line up in the City defence at home to Hull, we should have the teamsheets early enough (you can make changes to your PlayON team right up to 12.35 tomorrow) to allow us to be certain and perhaps take advantage of his PlayON price of just 7.3m. Despite being exposed by Cardiff last weekend, the City defence at the Etihad is a different beast and well worthy of that level of investment. While Nastasic looks a steal, have a โ€œPlan Bโ€ at the ready if you have to swap him out when the teamsheet arrives.

Midfielder โ€“ Craig Gardner
Paolo Di Canio immediately recalled Gardner to his Black Catsโ€™ lineup for the trip to Southampton following his suspension. The all-action midfielder can be snapped up on PlayON for just 6.6m and looks a likely starter for the trip to Selhurst Park. Gardner loves a tackle so should collect points from defensive actions and is more than partial to a shot from distance. With Stephane Sessegnon reportedly left out of the Black Cats squad this weekend, Gardner could even be pushed up behind a lone striker in a 4-4-1-1.

Forward โ€“ Olivier Giroud
Once again, this is the most vital and, subsequently, trickiest area to find a bargain. PlayONโ€™s forward prices look tighter going into this weekend and Arsenalโ€™s Olivier Giroud is the first name to grab us as a potential bargain โ€“ although youโ€™ll need to shell out 11.4m to acquire him. Even so, with three goals to his name so far this season and Lukas Podolski ruled out, the Frenchman looks an assured starter in the North London derby: an encounter that is traditionally flooded with goals.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly fantasy football so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can change your team as many times as you like before the Live Matchday kicks-off โ€“ 12.35 tomorrow) you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, youโ€™ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge another player to a one-on-one game, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for ยฃ1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 67% win rate: we took a beating last week so this is a chance to kick us while we’re down.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a ยฃ2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open and the prize pot is building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates to play for free bragging rights or for cash. Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly. PlayON is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What makes Vertonghan a bonus point magnet compared to other Spurs defenders this season? Is passes out from the back? If that is the case, Luiz will be a great pick!

Also the biggest goal threat of the defenders.

But yes, if Luiz nails down a spot he could be worth a look as well. I reckon Vertonghen will still outscore most other defenders this year though.

Luiz hits a lot of overly ambitious innacurate balls as well as succesful ambitious balls.
He's a quality player imo, but at times I think he could be a little eccentric in his stats to receive bonus.
This may be a completely innacurate statement

He wasn't listed as injured by Big Sam, but that was the same for Collins. I think the fact it's qualifiers, suggests he wouldn't make it up. Nobody knows whether it's an international injury or not. I'm leaning towards no, and that Rat will play.

For the whole season Cazorla and Walcott were obviously better, but the 10 game unbeaten run was due to Ramsey. He probably was our worst player because he had zero confidence. But ever since the West Ham game where he got to play in his favoured position, he has been immense. He is arguably the best athlete in the PL (with Ramires and Milner) and has an immense tackle ratio, and is now pitching in further up the pitch for FPL consideration.

Hate to be a descenting voice but...

All this talk about the end of big money midfielders is a bit knee-jerk surely?

The likes of Silva, Walcott and Hazard have actually done pretty well in comparison to last season's stats, but have all, coincidentally, been unlucky with end product thus far. That, coupled with an unusually low scoring start to the Premier League, means that the big midfield names have not yet fully fired up. But, people, we are two (or three) matches in...it is still early days. The new bonus system hasn't magically prevented Walcott et al from scoring. Give it a couple of weeks and the picture will be very different, I predict.

Meh they haven't gone well stats wise. If anything most are regressing to the mean as they all ran pretty hot last season in terms of converting chances/sot into goals. People honestly thought the likes of Coutinho were gonna continue creating goals from every 2 key passes??

It's certainly not the end of them, but they certainly are getting less bonus points. I am transferring some money from midfield to defence because of the new system.

I agree. It's true that some of gw2's top performers had 4 or 5 defenders, clean sheets and bonus... scored high. The point is though, is that goal scorers and creators will still get the baps when the clean sheets start drying up. And they will start drying up when the new signings settle.

I'm one that has also gone with a very (extremely) modest defensive unit only my keeper is over 4.0.

      Marshall
      Turner, Chambers, Chester (Bennett, Ramage)
      Silva, Walcott, Yaya, Cabral, Kasami
      RVP, Benteke and Soldado

      2.5mil in the bank.

I must say that I have been heavily leaning towards playing a WC and restructuring but I keep telling myself this is a very bad idea. I don't believe clean sheets are going to be the order of the day as we get deeper into the Gameweeks but the restructuring of the BP system has really got me thinking.

Teams that are able to keep clean sheets will definitely see some BP's going to these defenders, but a single goal against them erases that unless of course a defender assists or scores. Also, if many goals are scored 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 - I see BP's going to the forwards in that scenario.

Only in the case of a 0-0 draw are BP's favoured towards both defenses - like the Man U vs Chelsea draw.

I will keep this strategy for now, address players that are not getting game time - but I am convinced that things are going to turn around for Midfielders once the goals start flowing ๐Ÿ™‚

I tend to keep long-term. Think it's a waste to use now just to plug CHE/AST blank. That suggests short-termism past GWs.

Do you really need to fire 4 transfers to get 11 out? If not, probably hold fire, maybe take odd pt hit.

With the chance that Toure may be fit, genuinely stuck on who to captain

    a) Walcott (TOT)
    b) Dzeko (HUL)
    c) RvP (liv)
    d) Mirallas (car)

Do i need to WC for next week?

    Mignolet (Davies)
    Zabaleta, Coleman, Ward (Toure, Chester)
    Walcott, Silva, Coutinho, Barkley (JWP)
    Giroud, Soldado, Dzeko

Maybe take a hit next week; out with Dzeko and Coutinho (though Liverpool has nice fixtures..), in with RVP and a 6.5 mid. The week after, i was planning on bringing a Tottenham defender.

A whole other question is; who should be captain this week; Silva, Walcott, Dzeko, Soldado...tough decision ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyone, if someone wants to try it out, don't let it go to waste

Myhill ( Stockdale if you are feeling risky)

    Nastasic Baines Demel Davies
Rosicky Gerrard (only 7.8!) Nolan Gardner (possible punt on marvoux)
    Giroud Aguero

I'm not restricted from accesing it, but my country is not on the list and since this is a pay to play and play to win game - they probably wont be able to pay me out my winnings.

And i don't feel like registering a false address and then fooling around with paypal or something like that. Too much of a hassle.

For a WC team would you prefer

    A Benteke and Silva

    Or

    B RVP and a 5.0 midfielder

I know A looks better on paper but the captaincy option of RVP and fixtures may swing things

Lot of people showing Toure love, rightly so, good value and should be BP magnate. But not much love for Enrique who was outstanding last season, nailed on start, should get plenty of cleanies and still has great goal/assist threat.

Good differential? I'm tempted as an Ivan downgrade
