Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

    ***Erik Lamela***

An extremely exciting player added to a Spurs squad now devoid of the mercurial talent that is Bale. Lamela is seen by many as a player that out of the new recruits, is closest to representing a replacement for the Welshman when taking into account his style of play and attacking threat. However, as revealed in my analysis of Aspas, statistics can sometimes flatter to deceive and it may be worth taking a look whether Lamela’s goals were given rise from great finishes and pieces of skills or bad defending partnered with lucky positioning.

Also having seen Chadli and Townsend play and realising that they seem to be more interested in taking the limelight than supplying their lethal front-man, is it possible that Lamela could be detrimental to Soldado and has a case of the greedy plague that engulfed Sturridge during his time on the wing at Chelsea? Of course, Lamela’s assist stats are encouraging but it may be a case that he made short passes when blocked off that resulted in goals than actually seeking to help his striker rise to the occasion.

    A. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=34s (Terrible defending allows him to drift into the box unnoticed for a tap in, hardly worthy of a player used to making fantastic runs like Frank Lampard)

    B. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=48s58 (Quick reaction to take on the ball from a deflection and produce a fantastic curled short from close range after taking just 1 previous touch, as classy as RVP’s finish against Arsenal after Vermaelen’s poor clearance)

    C. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=1m5s (An absolutely fantastic shot into the far left corner off the post from the right edge of the box, only allowed to make the run to take the shot as an opposition player went down injured and the defenders backed off)

    D. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=1m16s (Bullet header from a corner kick)

    E. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=1m27s (Absolutely fantastic interplay, using a quick one-two with the CAM to get past the defence before nudging the ball past the keeper)

    F. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=1m47s (Good threaded pass into the feet of the striker to score, could have chosen to drive into the box but definitely does not look like a player who just greedily chooses to take on risky dribbles ala Taarabt)

    G. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=1m59s (Plucks the ball out of the air with a great first touch before running into two defenders on the edge of the box, uses skill to delay get into a good position to thread the ball with a curved pass into the feet of the striker hovering at the penalty spot)

    H. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=2m17s (Exposes some awful defending to get the ball passed to him in the box but takes a good finish once in that position)

    I. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=2m32s (Controls the ball elegantly in the central area by rolling the ball to his right before producing a sublime diagonal pass with the outside of his foot to the RM, also produces a solid volley from close range but had a good few seconds to prepare)

    J. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=2m51s (Admirable pass into the box between opposition players before showing a flash of dribbling skill in the box, throws the keeper off guard by pretending to pass the ball across the box before tucking it into the small gap between the keeper and his near post)

    K. http://youtu.be/QK3N1W0IN24?t=3m26s (Again reacts quickly when a poor clearance comes into his feet, produces a sublime curled finish into the bottom left corner of the goal)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afOofA-9scY

    A. http://youtu.be/afOofA-9scY?t=32s (Produces an absolutely wonderful curled shot into the top left corner of the goal from the edge of the penalty box’s right side, unsavable)

    B. http://youtu.be/afOofA-9scY?t=50s (Stop at 01:16, a display of his fantastic use of pace and skill on the right hand side of the pitch, certainly a classier player than the likes of Lennon but almost as effective in using his pace to blow past defenders)

    C. http://youtu.be/afOofA-9scY?t=1m16s (Great short reverse through ball into the feet of the striker whilst counter attacking)

    D. http://youtu.be/afOofA-9scY?t=2m18s (Superb volley from close range into the top corner)

    E. http://youtu.be/afOofA-9scY?t=2m56s (Another cracking volley from close range, good run from the right wing to drift into the box unoticed)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkoXY78Cyws

    A. http://youtu.be/MkoXY78Cyws?t=31s (Good through ball between defenders into the feet of the striker on the counter)

    B. http://youtu.be/MkoXY78Cyws?t=1m27s (Using pace to drift inside, before producing a cracking chipped pass into the feet of the LM just inside the box)

    C. http://youtu.be/MkoXY78Cyws?t=4m6s (Great interplaying pass into the feet of the RB who overlapped Lamela to sprint to the edge of the box)

    D. http://youtu.be/MkoXY78Cyws?t=4m57s (Some great skill on the right edge of the box to whip in a fantastic low cross across the box)

So have my questions been answered? Well it is clear that Lamela is an absolutely fantastic shot taker from the right wing if placed there, his quick reactions also mean that he can take advantage even within a little space afforded to him in the CAM area to dispatch quality shots too. He seems to be a faster and better shot taker than Siggurdson and at the very least matches the Icelandic player in this respect.

Lamela looks to be a deadly player to have in your armoury when on the counter and has a pace to match any race into the opposition box, however this is combined with incredible skill to completely separate him from the likes of Walcott, Valencia & Lennon as he is definitely not a player who races to the by-line before dispatching an often hopeful rather than targeted cross. He can make some excellent passes both along the ground and in the air which is encouraging for the likes of Soldado in his goal seeking exploits. His ease when threading through balls on into the feet of the striker when cutting inside should also hugely benefit Soldado who seeks to play off the shoulder of the defender and is usually looking to run beyond the defence. He certainly carries a responsible awareness to pass to his striker to work in cohesion with his goal threat.

Also seeing an example of his fantastic interplay (E of the first link) with Totti as a creator from the CAM position has me excited to see if Lamela can also benefit from Eriksen’s creative touch. His pace and constant drive to get into the box should certainly benefit from a creative force in his team at the very least.

Finally, if played in a central area Lamela seems to be less able to express himself using his skill and pace but his constant runs into the box should allow him to get at least a goal or two in this position, however he is definitely not someone with a great sense of attacking anticipation and so won’t ever be the type of player to thrive by driving into the box from CAM/CM like Michu or Lampard. On the other hand, his fantastic volleying ability and good (solid but not GREAT) finishing should ensure he remains a goal threat even when moved into a central area.

I will repost this tomorrow hopefully combined with a Youtube player analysis of Eriksen and possibly king Ozil 😉

Let me know your thoughts! 😀

Please do not put Rooney into your team.
Soldado is a better FPL player and cheaper at the same time.

These are the attackers you should be considering: Soldado, Giroud, Sturridge, Benteke and RVP.

So with Spurs covered in midfield it opens up a striker slot for Giroud, Benteke, Sturridge.

Exactly. Although I personally feel £8.5m would be a fairer price as Lamela tends to also rely on spectacular shots to score whilst cutting in, it's very difficult to get double figures whilst doing that alone and a one or two of his goals last season came from absolutely woeful defending.

So far this season we have seen a few strikers starved of opportunities as their teams fail to create chances for them, the likes of altidore, soldado & cisse. I said the first two should thrive provided they are supplied with chances by their teams...predominantly their respective midfields.

In the 10 seasons from 1984-1993, teams from 8 countries won the European Cup / Champions League.
Thats 8 in 10 years, including Romania, Yugoslavia, Holland, Portugal, France, Italy, Spain and England.
Note. Germany never got 1 in that time.

In the 20 seasons since from 1994-2013, 6 leagues have won. Thats 6 in 20. One was Porto, one Ajax. The rest, England, Italy, Spain, Germany.

Gone are the days of competitive football where an underdog can realistically achieve greatness. Why?

    1. The change from EC to CL.

This allows the "big" teams to have the cushion of not getting put out early as they go in at a latter stage and groups means they get several bites at the cherry. Underdogs cant cause an upset over and over really.
Knockouts made the old EC wide open.

    2. Allowing 4th placed sides in.

Before, you had to win the league just to get in. Doing that was rare enough. Smaller clubs only had to upset 1 or 2 powerhouses to win. Today, its 6 or 7. Again, not gonna happen.

    3. Bosman

This meant big clubs could up wages to a point no one else could compete. Players being players, they saw the money to be made and decided being on the Real Madrid bench was better than playing elsewhere as you got silly money. This meant players wasted careers on a bench rather than play for the Dutch champions and such. So those Dutch, Portugese, etc. sides didnt have the players necessary to cause regular upsets. Never mind the likes of a Belgain club, or dare I say, a Scottish club.

    4. 3 foreigner rule

Back in the day, some may remember Georghe Hagi sitting on the Barca bench. This being because Romario, Keoman and Stoichkov were not Spannish. That meant Hagi was a 4th foreigner so could be fielded with the other 3. Sounds amazing I know and maybe it was less exciting in domestic football. But talent was used. Not wasted.

In those days, Real and Chelsea and Man City couldnt play infinite foreigners. Inter Milan won the CL under Jose with 1 italian (a sub) playing in the final. Most weren't even European (eto'o, lucio, cesar, zanetti, cambiaso, samuel, milito etc). Back in the day, that wasn't allowed, so less powerful leagues held onto their talent.

Ajax had VanDerSar, F.DeBoer, Blind, Riijkard, Reiziger, R.DeBoer, Davids, Seedorf, Overmars, Kluivert, Litmanan in the mid 90's. Note, 10 of that was Dutch. Now look at them. A giant of European football now incapable of competing with Man City. Who in truth, are nobodies.

Gone are the days of competitive European competitions.

Gone are the days where Anderlecht might have had Mignolet, Vermalen, Vertonghen, Kompany, Mirallas, Fellaini, Hazard, De Bruyne, Lukaku and Benteke.

    BRING BACK CHAMPIONS ONLY
    BRING BACK STRAIGHT KNOCKOUTS
    BRING BACK 3 FOREIGNER RULE

    BRING BACK COMPETITION.

        Bobby Charlton.
A true domestic legend who performed in Europe and at International level.

His goal record for England shames that of Lamps or Gerrard.

And he wasn't playing Belarus, Montenegro, Latvia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Estonia etc.

In those days it was USSR, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia
Strong sides. No room for qualifying fodder.

    Afternoon gents,

I thought I'd share a few thoughts that were swirling around my head as i walked to get my bread rolls earlier. Please feel free to tell me where i may be confused, as these will most likely inform my WC when i activate it. Sorry if any of the below have been covered.

    - A lot of people seem to be going off Soladao after 3 games. Under normal circumstances, 3 games is a good data set to work from, but in Spurs' case its almost certainly not. Spurs have obviously missed the link between mids and him, but with the 2 new signings they may have what they are looking for. If Soldado gets 1, 2 or 3 from open play in the next week or two, it'll change everything (you could say this about any striker, right) and he'll surely establish himself as a must have. Spurs have lots of new players, most of whom now have 3 games' exprirence, the 'click' could be just around the corner. I've got him, and I'm going to hold on for another 2 weeks.

    - With Ozil arrival, Walcott could be freed up for an (occasional) OOP. His disire to play up front is no secret, Arsenal are clearly light on strikers - maybe Wenger is planning to mould him into a true forward now the creative midfield part of his game can be picked up by Ozil. Ozils great strength is clearly providing assists (goal scroing record is nothing to be ignored, mind), however these seem to carry less weight this season, which leads me to....

    - Midfielders need goals to justify big price tags. With this in mind surely Michu is a must have? He's seems to have done everything but score? Admittedly, I've not seen the Swans play as yet, but they've not been dredful and the man has been in amoungst the action from all I've heard. Don't have him at the moment, but he'll almost certainly becoming in when I WC.

    - Negredo looks the best Man City option if he gets starts. More time needed before making the final call on a City striker and see who the manager settles on, but he seems to be adapting as well as can be expected. At this stage, I'll be bringing in Tekkers and keeping Soldado and Sturridge, but this guy could definetly change my plans (and don't get me started on Lukaku). Another reason to wait another 1-2 weeks before the WC.

    - 4-3-3 looks be the way to go. Cleansheets are easier to come by than goals from midfield at the moment, plus centrehalves seem to be attracting the BPS. A backline with coverage from Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man U could reap huge points and could be worth going with 2 x 4.5-5 mids. Of course, it's still early days and if the goals start raining in then we'd be back to 3-4-3/3-5-2 in no time at all. More time needed...

    - United need to play Kagawa or Zaha soon, they look stale to me and need players who can inject some life.

    - New boys are looking good - early days of course and it's a long season, but they don't seem to be push overs most predicted. Just ask Man City. Cat, meet pigeons...

Glad i've kept the WC the more i think about the above. Now, if I can just resist for another 10 days!

Good post 😀 Nothing like productive bread purchasing

Soldado - agree. Keeping for sure

Walcott - Good point, he may play centrally sometimes. (Could even affect giroud negatively! There's something to ponder) Either way, a fit walcott will always be in my team

Midfielders - Yes they need goals. I am waiting for some to emerge.

City - Yuck. I'm avoiding the lot!

4-3-3 Definitely a good option. I like having subbable/ playable defenders and mids, and choosing 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 depending on fix - thoughts?

WC - Me too - Will fell good to have it intact!

Nice post but I disagree with some things.

Michu first. His stats are not looking promising under the new system and new players. He's creating more chances but not scoring.

Second, Negredo being the best MCY option. Still way too early. He still hasn't even started a game! One bad game in which Silva gets hauled over against Hull and everyone ditches. He'll come around and get like 9 points next week.

Michu is a natural goalscorer and will score goals.. Couple that with his increased assist threat this year like you said(7 Key Passes last game!) and he could be an insane option

My current strikeforce is Soldado - Sturridge - Dzeko and I have Walcott in my team.
Before this week, I was so sure this week my transfer is gonna be Dzeko -> Benteke.

I mean, I'm against double coverage from the same team, and Benteke next fixtures are potential goalfest. And he's the only guy in the team who actually scores.

But suddenly, Giroud springs to action.

More so after the transfer of Ozil. An assist machine. He's a quality player no doubt, but not for FPL for me. This year is all about CS and goal scoring midfielder / striker. Asisster is just not worth it.

Back to Giroud. Arsenal is already one of the most attacking team in EPL. And with the addition of Ozil to the likes of Cazorla, Walcott and Arteta, Giroud will be supplied with endless scoring chances.

And the fixtures. Benteke's next four is NEW nor MCI hul and Giroud's is sun STO swa wba.
On paper, the fixture-proof Benteke's got better fixture - especially vs Newcastle, and right?

    Wrong.

Looking depth into the fixtures, Giroud may actually got better fixture ahead of him.

Newcastle conceeded 4 in 3, but all of them are against City in GW 1. After that they've been tighten up and had 2 CS in 2 games.
Away to Norwich and Hull are meh, but both as we know both team can be pretty tight at home.
And then there's City - no explanation needed.

    Whereas Arsenal's.
Swansea and Stoke are in top 3 shots conceded in the box. Giroud doesn't take long shots anyway.
And Swansea and Sunderland are both joint most conceeded team in EPL so far with 5 goals in 3 games.
And wba which is so-so.. Although traditionally Arsenal do well against them. A high scoring game (that's what we said with NLD as well, so..)

So yeah, that's my 2 cents on Benteke vs Giroud.

All the stats points to Giroud at this stage. But my guts says Benteke. Having both is ideal but can't let go of Sturridge and Soldado - who the latter I would say will pick up pace with the arrival of Lamela and Eriksen in 4-2-3-1 formation. With 4-3-3 and no creative playmaker he was bound to be isolated.

I think people are underestimating the importance of captaincy points when they talk of avoiding RVP at the expense of premium mids. In the near future (except walcott) I don't think many premium mids will be standout captain choices. Is it worth paying 9mil+ on someone you'll never captain?

I'm not so sure - I'd rather maximize my potential of having the best captain option every week. From experience I know a good/ bad captain can make/ break your week. Similarly if RVP fires at home v a small side (as he so often does) and you don't have him, prepare for a slide down the rankings.

This is why I think Sturridge, RVP, Walcott and maybe Soldado (if spurs become more fluid) is a great core for the near future. It leaves you with a premium fixture captain most weeks.

The rest of the team simply have to grind away, hopefully representing good value as a sum. You'll never captain them so an occassional blank will do no harm. A LOT of defenders look set to represent value at all price ranges, and several mids below 6 look set to be reasonable, if not world beaters.

I actually wish I'd paid more attention to the importance of captaincy in recent seasons. After captain fails dropped me from 1k to 5k last year (allowing a friend to class back 60 points!) I am determined not to repeat the mistake of thinking only in terms of 'value' at the expense of 'worth'

while i understand your point, and mentioned it myself earlier, i think that all three of my strikers are as premium a captin choice as rvp( benteke , sturidige , giroud.). benteke and sturidge dont care about fixtures, and giroud plays for arsenal who will be well up there for goals scored this season (and is going to be getting ridiculous service from that midfield now ozil's involved)
the main bit i suppose is rvp's ownership worries me. thats all.

Has the game changed that much?

Goals & assists are still the main source of points.

Yes, premium midfielders did get bailed out by getting bonus points in games in which they had neither goals nor assists in the past, and did get a lot of bonus points when they did score; but having midfielders that score 10 or more goals with 5 or more assists for the season still has to come at some kind of premium I would think.

Maybe, but I believe that in any given week, Benteke/Giroud/Soldado/Sturridge are better choices than RVP for the armband. If you have RVP, you almost feel obligated to captain him, at least I did last year, and it cost me massive points for overlooking Bale/Suarez. I'm going without him because a) I'll have a much deeper team b) I think I'll be more flexible with my captain choice. Which of course has the potential for tears but there's nothing quite like nailing a captaincy pick. I think it will be very easy to ride RVP into the top 10k, but I think there's more upside going without.

But like you said to Wood is Good, if you have RVP "you'll captain him more often I'm sure." When he has really tough fixtures, like playing Chelsea and Liverpool, you might be able to overlook him, but overall you'll probably captain him close to 75% of the time, which I think is too much. And much less than that, you're not having 2 RVPs, you're having 1.5 RVPs and Brady.

If they had similar fixtures I'd captain RVP. If RVP is away and Sturridge is home, bothv mid table teams, I'd captain sturridge.

Just so happens in gws 4,6,8,10, rvp has the best fixture of all the options mentioned.

You can't plan for players being flops. How many seasons have we had great players go bad the season after. Mata would have been a cert from last season but now he ain't even an option. Nothing is certain at the start of the season. That's why it's best to read the teams from the opening couple of weeks then make your move.

"Nothing is certain at the start of the season". Does 3 weeks in really tell us that much this year either? There are no Michu's, no golden risers. Think it might be best to wait until the big boys show up. The 2nd international break could easily be the time that quality is known, have a better understanding of the value of defenders etc etc. You could make some good money that week and probably end up with a much stronger, well assessed squad. Impossible to lose too much ground at this early stage.

for when you need it due to injuries/changes/bans, for when the picture is a bit clearer on who the best buys and bargains of this season will be (or at least till we know the usual starting line-ups) or for when there is a change in fixtures where you want to load up on different teams to those of the players you own or for when there is an inevitable massive DGW at the end of the year. There are probably more reasons too

I'm not holding onto a WC until someone gets injured or there is finally a DGW. I'd much rather start with the most effective players before they go up in value. DGW are normally known well enough in advance for you to plan ahead.

Everyone can play different;y so I'm not saying people shouldn't or should play WC early as a rule, but now with the new transfers and maybe new rotation worries, or more goal threats, it's going to take another 2-3 GWs to figure out what the state of play is with some teams, so WC now could leave you just as stuck as you are after the first 3 GWs.

If you've struggled at the start then you might have more desperation to reset and get things going, but for myself I have enjoyed late season WCs and am happy to save it.

3 weeks notice is what you get either way, but you can really maximize your options with a wildcard. And it is more likely to be at least some of the better teams as they're the ones who will progress in the cup. It's too early to properly judge who the best players are

You never know, who'd have predicted wigan to go that far last year. Still not convinced about saving a wc for the double gw. Get 1 in january anyways if you dont already get the best players from this one and make evryones team the same

WC's in doublegame weeks can be extremely valuable.

Personally, I usually WC early but if I'm reasonably happy with my team I try to save it. Right now, we're still unsure on a lot of players and teams, which I think also decreases the value of a WC this week. I'm not WC'ing early this year by the looks

Sure it is a lot lower than that. I am very happy with my team and prefer it to many teams i have seen on the rmwct. There will be different 'must have' players next week, the week after, the week after that etc. Patience is often the key to success in FPL.

I don't get why Liverpool's "a marquee signing" defender is 0.5m less than the other starting Liverpool defenders, where as Demichelis is more expensive than Nastasic and Lescott and has the same starting price as Zaba and Clichy.

I guess it's because Sakho is .5 more expensive than the man he's replacing (Toure) and Demichelis is .5 more than the man he's theoretically replacing (Nasty), although I think Nasty will continue to start more matches.

Shouldn't it though? I don't know how the FPL towers determine new player prices, but if I was looking at buying Sakho, I would look at the prices of the other Liverpool defenders. Johnson/Enrique/Agger are pretty nailed on, so they're more valuable than Sakho. We think, but aren't sure, Sakho will replace Toure, so he's more valuable than Toure. 5.5 makes sense to me because he's the least nailed on player in the presumed Liverpool back 4.

Probably that was their thinking, but Sakho looks equally as likely to play as the other three 6m Liverpool defenders based on the manager's comments. Maybe they predict rotation.

regarding the RVP debate. the way I see it, it essentially boils down to this

    rvp + brady
    vs
sturridge/benteke/giroud/soldado (take your pick) + walcott

I believe the second pair should outscore the first. but that decision is really up to you

For me the 0.45 bit is probably redundant until we have more data... wingbacks might be getting less crosses than typical, etc. The 1.77 is interesting - again though in higher scoring games with multiple scorers it'd be tough for all goal scorers to average 1.77

Hope they keep updating it to see how it goes

The CB thing doesn't really tell us much. It's comparing CBs to all other players. A centreback gets 1/2 a bonus point, holding all other covariates constant, compared to the rest of the population which includes fullbacks, midfielders, goalkeepers, and forwards. What I'd be more interested in would be looking at only defenders, and including a CB variable. That would tell us the predicted difference in BAPs between CBs and FBs, which is really what we care about.

Or am I misreading that? They say that CB do get an extra .51 over fullbacks but that's only true if only defenders are included in the regression.

Hmm, looking at the article it's unclear. From the regression output they posted, there's no evidence to back up their conclusion. But it's possible they did more regressions off screen to get their conclusions.

I would rather Terry and Collins over Enrique and Turner

Also I would rather wait on Lamela before slotting him in right away. Also get Brady over WP and rotate him with Redmond (I dont think WP will keep his spot long-term)

        Rest looks good.

            Soldado is 9.7

Assuming you bought him at 9.5 you will only get 9.6 if you sold him. So the 0.1 you earn from Campbell will be spent getting Soldado back at 9.7.

            Basically... keep Soldado

Well I just have a team completely full of potential price risers at the mo. I intend on trying not to think about my GW4 team too much until next week. But who am I kidding, I still keep tinkering with different line-ups. Can't decide on RVP or no RVP yet. If I have no RVP my front 3 will be Benteke-Giroud-Sturridge and my midfield will probably be Walcott-Lamela-Lampard-HBA, with a pretty strong defence. I think Lamela is class and tottenham attacking coverage is essential if you dont have Soldado.

I'm not sure I can WC and not put RVP in my team though. Seems dangerous.

yeah, same. cant resist a tinker.

it's hard to make good calls at the mo. we know our defence's need to be stronger than last season, but how strong? You reckon you'll go with 2 premium defs + 2 mid-price ones?

I like that midfield a lot. Lamela could be beast.

Im leaning towards RVP. If RVP is a let-down, we can downgrade him and upgrade DEF or MID, and by that time, we will have gauged the mid-def balance we should be aiming for. ie. I want to improve my defence, but I might not improve it enough!

That's not a bad idea, I suppose it will be easier to take him out and upgrade than it will be to get him in. I just don't know if RVP+cheapie mid & defender will score more than Sturridge + 9.5mill mid and 6.0 defender

Yeah, youre not wrong. My 3rd mid might have to be Hernandez.

But with a strong mid and def, you'll have benching headaches each week! With your WC draft, would you have to be benching either a decent mid or decent def each week?

Also Deulofeu is gonna be used as an impact sub for some time apparently and is perfect for everton as mirallas cant play more than 70 so he can gt taken off for Deulofeu then. I think you're spot on. If you watch a lot of football then you can take many posts with a pinch of salt. If you don't and this is your main source of information then stick to the articles and be wary of the forum!

Yeh. I tend to look at the users linked team ad see what their rank is like when they offer advice. I also look at whether they're a paying member. I'm judging you all, all the time!

Anyone getting Lamela just because he's got those smoldering looks in the picture above?

Liverpool. How serious are they this season?
Suarez would have taken top scorer but for the ban last year. Probably best player in the league now Bale has left.

Top already without him. No goals conceded.
Pretty good depth compared to last year.
Could the actually keep this going?
Nice fixtures for 6 weeks to come.

Think its a good start but not sure they'll keep it up.

Oddly enough, I think their problems will start once Suarez returns. Sometimes you can upset the balance of a good team and lose momentum and chemistry....

Suarez is not better than RVP.

They will have a good season I think, but you don't go from 7th place and 61 points to league champions in one season.

Good points made there. Extremely strong in defence especially with Sakho now. Many PSG fans are moaning about his sale. Problem is getting goals from midfield. Maybe an over reliance on Sturridge and Suarez? That's why they went for Mikhteriyan of Dortmund. Lets hope Moses, countinho and aspas get the supporting goals. Otherwise great start from a team with huge potential.

Too early to say, I think the highest position they will be competing for is 4th. Can't see more than that happening.

Well extrapolating wildly from the season so far Liverpool will finish top with 114 points, +38 goal difference, all scored by Daniel Sturridge.

But realistically they're likely to make a decent challenge for 4th place and finish anywhere from 3rd-6th, no idea what'll actually happen

I wonder how effective Suarez will be on the left - anyone care to guess? Rodgers seems to value Coutinho and Sturridge, perhaps even more than Suarez because while he caused so much controversy and got himself banned, Coutinho and Sturridge were busy dismantling teams and finally the team was gelling in a way that made Rodgers look good. I think that Rodgers feels like those two are repaying him and vice versa. Besides Coutinho and Sturridge don't work as well on the wing.

4th spot is all I hope for. Anything higher will be incredible.
