Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

    Mourinho on Lukaku:

‘With Lukaku, we have Fernando, Eto’o and Demba. Of course he would get playing time, but it’s the choice of playing basically every weekend.

‘He had lots of clubs and options, and we have to respect his decision.’

Source, last two paragraphs of article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2410351/Chelsea-sweat-Eden-Hazard-achilles-problem-Belgian-star-forced-training.html#ixzz2dtbLtHSG

That sounds like Lukaku went to Everton with the promise of being in the starting 11.

Oh Lukaku. You've burned me so many times and I just keep coming back for more. I just wish I knew how to quit you.

Thank heavens he can't play this week or I'd sell Soldado for a hit for him in a heartbeat. And that'd be dumb.

Martinez was saying how Everton need to improve their attack. Lukaku was the means to achieving that. He will start regularly after the Chelsea game.

I hope so, but I'm still not sure Jelavic and Kone will go quietly into the good night. There has to be a reason no manager Lukaku has had trusts him enough to start him regularly.

Also, going back to the assist/Baps conservation on the previous page, the evidence is Lampard. Rooney got a BAP despite only playing a half hour with 2 assists. Has any other player in the game gotten two assists in a game so far? There have been so few goals thus far that it's hard to predict how the Baps will fall in games where both teams score goals.

Needless to say though there does appear to be a slight change in the baps system which works more in favour of those getting clean sheets than assists. Defenders certainly didn't get many baps last season.

Agreed. But I think that the low scoring early season has swung the pendulum too far, and is going to lead to double threat midfielders like Silva, Santi, and Hazard being undervalued.

What's the cheapest top 6 back 5 (inc GK) you can come up with?
    - no doubling up
    - you have to be fairly certain they're not a rotation risk

I'm thinking it might be: Mignolet
Koscielny, Walker, Ferdinand, Nastasic (surely ahead of Lescott in pecking order?)

Cech Mertesacker Walker Enrique Vidic Zabaleta, more expensive, but more BAPs and avoids the rotation mayhem that I think will occur along the Chelsea back line as I expect Mourinho to go far in all competitions

Hazard is a bit of a dead topic around here since the double gameweek disaster. Some clearly still have held him through the drop in price. I expect the first goal he scores will result in a small bandwagon of folks who "always believed in him."

Meanwhile, his ankles aren't 100%, but he should play Friday for Belgium (check Scout Tweets), and he scored a goal against Bayern in the Super Cup.

Why do you say that? CS are the bread and butter of defenders and CS=bonus.

Assists are the bread and butter of mids but assists =/= baps.

Seems like defenders have more value now, plus there are no mids in form.

GK has the lowest chance to get so many points. They lack of assists and goals even bps.

You're a member here. Pull up Silva in the comparison tool. Match him against any midfielder and you'll be surprised how few can compete with him even on a stat like threat. Our eyes can deceive us, and just because he blanked against Hull at home doesn't mean he's a bust. RvP got nothing last year at QPR at home and we didn't suddenly write him off as useless.

Feels good to see people wildcarding to teams with 8 or 9 of my players 🙂

Works for me, although I think I'd rather have a Chelsea/City/United defender over Walker. But he's probably safer than any of the options from the big teams.

Question. Has the limp game week 3 swayed many people from not taking a wildcard? Cos as it stands, there's not really that many stand out players who's value will rise significantly. Or did ye stick with the plan and wildcard anyways.

Tempted but the players I would bring in are pretty small swaps which can be done easily enough over a couple of weeks I think. Main team is pretty solid, but always have that itch to get it perfect.

Used my free transfers already to bring in Sturridge and Benteke. In the future looking to do Mirallas & Brayford to Lampard & Vidic or similar if they don't perform.

Soldado to Giroud/Lukaka etc. could be in the works if it doesn't pan out either.

Yeah tough choices to be made. At the mo I'm bizarrely without any United or Chelsea.Which is crazy really. Too much risk of rotation and expense involved though. As it stands:

Defence: I have Coleman, Mert and Zab. Quite happy so far

Midfield: Absolute Minefield with all the big teams having so many options to rotate and none really hitting their stride.

Strikers: RVP too expensive when the 9's are all on form at the mo.

    Mig / 4.0

    Ivan / Coleman / Chester / Burner / Collin

    Nolan / Silva / Wally / Kim / Mirallas

    Tekkers / Sturridge / Soldado

    1Ft, 0.9 in bank

With Ozil coming in, would like to get Giroud in.

    Soldado -> Giroud ?

News source seem to say that Sturridge will retain his position with Suarez out wide.

Not for Goldado, no. This might be slightly controversial but I would plump for Studge. He's an injury always waiting to happen imo and Suaz is due back soon so that will end Studge's points output I fear.

Not sure about this. Liverpool have indicated that Suarez will play wide when he returns (http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/sep/03/brendan-rodgers-luis-suarez-liverpool), and he's creative enough to create even more chances for Sturridge.

    Mignolet
    Shaw, Toure, B Turner
    Walcott, Mirallas, Nolan, Brady
    RVP, Soldado, Lambert

    Harper, Collins, Coleman, Kim

    2.4m in the bank.
    1 FT.

    Lambert > Giroud?

Worth making this transfer now before the price increase?

Leaves me with 1.2m to upgrade Kolo Toure if he does not play. This is if i do not get a more pressing transfer. I do not like making too many transfers on defenders at this stage of the season. I want to focus on getting the right attacking players.

    Many thanks.

I think Vertonghen is safe ... he can play CB and switch to Left back if required. Dawson is a true CB and his place would be under threat from both Chiriches and Kaboul now that he's fit again. I have Dawson and he's my number 1 concern coming back after the break!

I plan to go for a 433 in my WC as defenders are favored by the new bonus system. Also, there are very few goals from mids and it seems strikers and defenders are the best to have for now.

    Team is

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Coleman Zabaletta Enrique Whitakker Terry/Vidic
    Brady HBA/Yaya Wally Lampard Barkley
    Benteke/Soldado Giroud Sturidge

    a. Hba or Yaya
    b. Terry or Vidic
    c. Benteke or Soldado

Also. what do you think of 433 and the team? Comments appreciated.

Like many others i'm not sure the defensive dominance will last. But one thing the 433 does have going for it is the price structure - if you downgrade a top 6 defender to a decent budget one you only get 1.0 or 1.5 to play with - which doesn't even come close to allowing you to upgrade a decent budget midfielder or striker to a top 6 one. So I think we'll see a lot of 433 - especially from he WCers.

My thoughts exactly. I lined up at the start of the year with a 3-4-3 with Snodgrass planned to fill that mid-price midfielder role and 2 x 4.0 defenders. Now it seems much better value to go with a Premium defender like Vidic and 2 x 5.0 midfielders in a 4-3-3.

My theory was if you have Toure, Dzeko, Mirallas and no RVP then it was probably worth it - you only have one of those so can fix it quite easily over time or with a hit. Save WC for later.
