Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

I think it was mostly because Skrtel was pounding him all game long. I don't think he'll return as high numbers as his previous two seasons, but he'll definitely be up there for highest scoring player this year as well, especially with Suarez losing the first 5 GWs.

They did play some games with two strikers last season, in a sort of 4-4-2. I'm not saying they'll return to it, but it's an option. I think most likely yeah, Suarez on the wing and 4-2-3-1. Served them well so far.

Doesn't really matter Suarez will probably headbutt Evra on his return

Good question. Dzeko is at least nailed on for some minutes - and Toure may still be injured, but may also get some time until Sakho is ready. Of course you will also probably have more cover for a defender than a striker. They both have to go but I'd say Dzeko first.

    Hey guys,

What will spurrs midfield be looking like in your opinion for the 2 coming games? Will there be a lot of rotation / substitutions ?

Can we expect either of Chadli or Paulinho to get 2 full games?

I would really like to get in their midfield but only have 7.8 (can not afford Lamela nor Eriksen).

Now that Capoue is injured I was thinking something like:

    Paulinho Dembele
    Lamela Eriksen Chadli
    Soldado

    Cheers

I think Paulinho is one of the best players they have, he'll play. Partnering Sandro or Dembele, most likely Sandro (or both).

That tactic looks about right to me, but not sure Eriksen will be thrown right into it. Might go 4-3-3 a game or two more and use him from the bench.

Eriksen is excellent, but definitely Lamela, especially for FPL. He's much more of a goal-scorer and is plug-n-play into both 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1.

Thx Dogba, I agree I really liked Paulinho last games.
Would you happen to have any statistics regarding his offensive potential? Should we not be worried with the arrival of all the new offensive players?
Will they play with a single defensive mid?

Obviously if they play 4-2-3-1 it will hurt Paulinho's potential a lot. I don't see any reason to get him when there are alternatives like Nolan and PHernandez who are guaranteed to play close to the striker.

I think Lamela will be the one to get, and I think he will be nailed on. He's the closest thing they've got to a Bale replacement, goal-scoring left-footer.

Not on WC and I already have Soldado and Sturridge, so can only chose the one!

Done Mirelles to Brady as my FT already

So this will be a -4 hit.

Hernandez looks potentially the best value in Swansea squad, the only thing stopping him starting in GW1 was fixtures, plan was gw5 or gw7 to bring in, still going to wait personally.

He's a striker listed as a midfielder and Stoke don't have anyone bar Crouch so he'll get a lot of game time plus clean sheet bonuses as a striker. I couldn't see anyone better for 5.5.

Good point. I just want Vidics clean sheet against Palace and his good run of fixtures coming up plus I want Terry because Chelsea will concede the least this year and he's a goal threat. Defenders are scoring big bonus points this year so I'm aiming to capitalize on that. Aurnatovic will be my punt and differential seeing as he's a striker playing as a midfielder. It will be like having four strikers.

Ok, avoiding the Ozil bandwagon but can't resist Lamela.
Used WC so in it for the long haul now.

    Migs
    Coleman, Jose, Zabs, Whittaker
    Lamela, Walcott, Michu
    Sturridge, Giroud, Benteke

    Subs in order of usage.
Davis, Barkley, Brady, Baker (Bench Fodder)

Can rotate Whittaker for Barkley/Brady depending on fixture and whether whittaker remains nailed on. if not, can change him to chester.

    Thoughts ?

I like it a lot. Defense and forwards bang in form and you're looking to capitalize on qualiy midfielders fixtures. You can't do much more than that. I guess you're just hoping RVP doesn't score a hat trick vs Palace.

I'm captaining RVP and when he scores a few vs Palace it will shoot me up the table. He scored two vs Swansea away and Swansea are a lot better than Palace. Plus Moyes needs his first win at OT and he will play his strongest team for 90mins to get a big win.

It's not in the rules that I can find, the best I can find is this disclaimer :-

            How do player prices change?

Once the season has started, player prices may change by £0.1m a day, based on activity in the transfer market.

Both the formula used to calculate this change and the time of the change include variable factors, and won’t be revealed to game players.

do you watch football and follow team news?
or are your decisions based on what other players think and do and what you think about them?

lol you missed the sarcasm there, the point was that you shouldnt follow a bunch of people who made such a bad choice in the first place

Thats a big call. I don't think Mirrallas was a 'bad decision' for GW1. His stats even now prove that he was still a good bet. Its a pity he hasn't been clinical enough with his chances.

maybe not a bad decision but certainly a punt, mirllas previously wasn't seen a a Fantasy prospect, basically everyone saw martinez as the new manager, recognised that mirallas would play in a more advanced position in a more attacking team & thought 'bingo' when in reality they should think 'new manager, needs to time to settle, gonna take time to gel' etc etc.. that's how i look at it.

it wasn't a bad choice, you never know when a player hits form and loses it
it was a good choice that hasn't worked out so far and there is no indication that this situation could change in the nearest future, but there are factors that indicate that it can get worse (off form, Everton don't score goals, Delofeu pushing etc)

I watched 2 everton games and the highlights of the third one and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets dropped to the bench soon (maybe against Chelsea already).

I agree and this is why I got rid. Although its all conjecture to say he 'WILL' be dropped.

Not that you are saying that but you get my point. Its still guesswork at this stage.

It's not bout beeing sheeps.. For exemple I never Pick someone based on what others are saying bout him... I watch a loooot of games and then decide who to transfer.. I was very entusistic about Mirallas preseason because he, with walcott and michu are the mids with a real eye on goals.. But after 3 gw > no assist / no goals.. It's normal to start beeing sceptical bout his form, no?
