Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

Everyone were like Chelsea buy him Arsenal buy him when he was playing up front after he was moved deeper everyone was like yeah he is a horrible player and was lucky. I cant remember a bad game from the dude last season to be fair, and a great buy for united. But I do agree that they payd a bit much.

Saw a few comments about Lamela/Couts above. BR has said the Moses signing allows Couts to play in the "hole" which seems to be the player's and managers preferred position for him. Doesn't that change things for Couts? Liverpool have prime fixtures too.

I sold him on my wc on the hope of picking him up cheaper and making cash on favoured mids.

    Thoughts?

quality player, but lacks sufficient goal threat. Seemed a tad under par in his last 2 games.

For a 9m midfielder I think he needs to be captain material and for you to have a more than just a punt with him.

      Perhaps I'm lacking foresight.

    Hows this one

    Mingolet 4.0

    Evra Walker Coleman Collins Chester

Walcott Ben Arfa Snodgrass Brady Kim

Van Persie and two of Benteke Sturridge soldado Giroud

I like this best of ones i have done so far . Evra should be very attacking under Moyes , Walker gets forward plenty like Coleman and the others fairly nailed on solid centrebacks
Midfield revolves around Walcott Ben arfa good fixtures , and Snod will come good , the Hull and Cardiff mid rotate well
Van Persie for the captaincy and two from the rest

If van persie fails GW 4 then will just remove for one of the other top strikers before his price falls,

Your earlier one was refreshing in that it had 2 rotating 4.5 keepers. I still think that is the way to go over the whole season. Mignolet will not get a clean sheet each week, and the penalty save and bonus points make it look like he is head shoulders above everyone else. He may finish first in goalie fpl points, but I do not believe that he will be best value.

Just did a small prediction calculation for what I consider the big 5 strikers that might interest some of you! This is just my opinion so it may differ from yours.

I did a rating of the next 8 fixtures on defensive difficulty of opponent, the ratings are out of 10 for each fixture. This was the result

    Name / Total Score / Score/Price
    Sturridge / 56 / 6.09
    Benteke/ 55 / 6.04
    RVP/ 57 / 4.07
    Soldado/ 52 / 5.36
    Giroud/ 53 / 6.09

This means the 3 best strikers without considering price would be RVP Sturridge Benteke but when considering value I think Giroud Sturridge and Benteke is the best choice.

Snodgrass no longer stinking up my MF, the sweet smell of Pablo has replaced him.

Dzeko and his rotation risk ass punted to the kerb and RVP and Soldado now have Giroud to keep them company.

Happy with that for next GW.

Thanks Heels an Junited.. The discussion brought up some gr8 points
Chelsea will keep a LOT of Clean sheets this year. Considerin that A.Cole is the only nailed on option in defense(Azpi will play some games and so will Cahill especially when the CL kicks in) and he has little to no BAP and Attacking threat has Cech become an option? The bap system favoring CBs means you can get MerteSacker and Sakho in to cover Sczesny and Mignolet and go lower with Collins, Chester, M.Turner to get Baps. would be a bit expensive but if you want a chelsea defender it seems the best idea

Cole is tied for the Chelsea lead in BAPs at the moment. Baines is also showing that full backs can dominate the bonus without attacking returns. I'm not sure it's quite as simple as centre backs get bonus, although it surely helps. It's weird, I was going to say that nonattacking defenders who rack up good pass percentages are likely to mop up BAPs but then I thought of Baines... I don't really know what the answer is, but so far Cole looks comparable to the Chelsea CBs for bonus.

hmmm.. dint notice that. Still baps and attacking defenders can be covered by other teams better is my point. if i want a chelsea defender, cech seems the best bet for me. Or maybe i'm justifying saving a needless transfer in removin him 🙂

wow Özil already has had 72k Transfers in this week! Im surprised seeing as he is 10m surely that means that alot of people will be taking hits this week? or WC?

I know quite a few arsenal fans are in my leauge so they will no doubt be getting him in but surely as Özil is an assisting machine that Wally or Giroud would be the better bet?

how many of you guys are getting him in?

indeed, I will wait to prove himself, I have made a bit of extra £ this GW with price rises as well so maybe I might jump on the band wagon in the future but not from the off. Of course that means Im banking on Giroud and wally to be able to finish... And they are no Ronaldo / Benzema... thats one thing people are missing, Ronny was on the end of most of Ozils assists!

Siggy ... you were a brave man Gaz!

        IMHO:

Lamela - risk but potentially explosive
        Ben Arfa - as above
Silva - safe and will grind the points away all season
Michu - not quite so sold on him this year ... will be playing second fiddle a lot more
Lampard - could be the quiet achiever of the season but obvious rotation risk

      Thoughts on this 4 pointer:

      Toure, Mirallas, Dzeko out.

      Walker, Brady, Giroud in.

Leaves me with 1.3m in the bank. Could that be better spent elsewhere?

Originally I was getting Sturridge but with Ozil coming and Liverpool not creating many chances I'm now thinking Giroud.

Fancy attacking ability of Walker. No Chelsea defenders really stand out, plus next few fixtures aren't great.

sturridge has scored in every game so far fwiw. and pool have quite nice fixtures

yes ozil singing should help giroud but some on here have been keen to point out to me that giroud usually scores better at home and now has 3/4 on the road

i think chelsea's next 4 are quite nice. first is a trip to everton who can't seem to score (0 goals in last two games) with their only goals thanks to their right back.... a bit concerning. then they've got a home match to fulham.. the away trip to spurs will be tricky but if they can shut united out, who's to say they can't shut spurs out? followed by a trip to norwich who haven't been very prolific this year or last year

not to mention the fact that I think a chelsea defender for the course of a season is a must. they'll keep a lot of cs and mou seems to prefer to keep a cs than push for goals. notice how in the hull game after lamps scored they sat back and defended for the most part when they easily could've racked up the score if they'd gone for it
