Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers continued to strengthen his defence on Monday with the acquisition of Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain. Having signed a long-term contract, the 23-year-old arrives for a reported £15m fee in what is a real statement of intent from the Merseyside outfit as they look to kick on from their 100% start to the season.

One of eight summer signings for the Reds, Sakho reckons that, despite the significant outlay for his services, he’ll have to battle to nail down a regular role:

“In a large club, having competition is something you expect. To get the best out of any player, you need to have competition. Competition doesn’t give me any worries. Competition makes the team grow and makes the club grow because that’s the objective and the goal of everyone here. I’ve been at Melwood for a day and it’s very good. The training areas are impressive and everything is in place for the players to keep in top condition. I’m delighted to be here. I’d like to thank everyone for the welcome. I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

The History

A produce of the PSG youth academy, Sakho’s career at the Ligue 1 club kicked off back in 2007. Having made 12 appearances in his first season, the six foot two defender cemented a role as a first-team regular the following term and over the course of his six years in the French capital, played a total of 151 league games, scoring seven times and supplying a pair of assists.

Sakho – who can also fill in at left-back – was voted the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year in 2010/11 and was a crucial part of the side that won the French title under Carlo Ancelotti in the season gone by. He has also represented his country at youth level a total of 11 times and has turned out for the French senior side on 14 occasions.

The Prospects

Despite Kolo Toure’s impressive couple of opening displays and Martin Skrtel’s resilient showing against United last weekend, it seems almost inevitable that both will fall behind Sakho in the pecking order. The Ivorian’s current groin problem has already cast doubts over his ability to remain injury-free and it may well be that Rodgers sees him as experienced back-up option for Sakho or Agger over domestic cup matches, while Skrtel now looks fourth-choice, having been benched for Toure over the pre-season programme.

In a telling interview with the club’s official website, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre revealed the characteristics that persuaded Rodgers to pursue the 23-year-old:

“Sakho is a top, top centre-half and that adds to the great centre-back pairings that we have already and it will give that depth. He’s an important marquee signing for us. One of the things that Brendan said was that he wanted to add real depth and strength and Sakho is a Champions League player of great pedigree and experience. I think it’s difficult to imagine anyone filling Jamie Carragher’s shoes, but what the arrival will do is bring huge strength and experience to the squad. I think importantly, when you see him on the pitch, you see that he’s a leader and he’s very strong. The manager wanted to bring leaders and people who could dig in when needed. I think when our fans get to see Sakho in action, they’ll see he’s definitely got all of those characteristics.”

Strong in the air and on the ground, with a superb distribution rate, Sakho seems the ideal fit for Rodgers’ possession-based tactics. The only downside is both he and Agger are predominantly left-footed, making them less of a natural partnership than Toure and the Dane – nevertheless, for £15m the Frenchman hasn’t come to warm the bench ahead of a World Cup year. There’s also perhaps the possibility of an occasional switch to a three-man backline – a tactic Rodgers trialled on one or two occasions last term, with a 3-4-3 system also tested during a few of his final matches in charge at Swansea.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.6 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Sakho looks bound to earn plenty owners before the domestic program resumes. With Agger, Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique all priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Frenchman is set to hand us a cheap route into the Reds’ back-four (albeit one that is still more costly than Toure’s 5.0), though Johnson’s current ankle complaint is one to monitor, with Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly (both 4.4 in FPL) set to benefit if the right-back is ruled out for any length of time. The new Bonus Points System ruling also seems tailor-made for the likes of Sakho’s style of play, with his presence at the back likely to Liverpool’s chances of surpassing the 16 clean sheets harvested in Rodgers’ first season at the helm.

Ahead of an eye-catching run of fixtures (swa, SOT, sun, CPL, new, WBA ) investment in a defence that has already kept Christian Benteke and Robin Van Persie at bay in back-to-back matches looks a wise move, with many even tempted to double up, such has been the Reds’ resilience. With Rodgers’ side devoid of European duties this term, the focus is fully on nailing down a top four finish – a lack of rest and rotation could also benefit Liverpool’s main Fantasy assets and will likely bring Sakho onto the radar for wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers over the current international break.

      B for me.

With the exception of Man C away, Van Persie has superb fixtures coming up, so for me naturally gets the armband. In that case you need to view 'B' as Brady, Lampard, RVP & RVP and compare to A and add in the player you would make captain if you didn't own RVP.

For me during periods of favourable fixtures for RVP, it is the time to have RVP and the £14m becomes less of an issue because of the Captaincy factor.

I ignored the selection of RVP for the first three games because of both Chelsea's double gameweek and tough fixtures for Man U, making it unlikely that I would have captained him. He will be coming into my side for GW4 and remain so while the fixtures are extremely favourable.

During less favourable fixtures I may well sell him - so RVP is not a season keeper, is not essential, but is blooming close to essential for the next half a dozen games. The defeat at Liverpool should also deter any rotation thoughts that Moyes could have had for the Palace game and for me he starts and looks good for 2 goals / 1 goal + assist.

Also consider the free-kicks and corners and he can pick up points where other strikers don't.

      My plan is RVP, Sturr/Soldado/Tekkers/Giroud

Midfield of Walcott(or other similar price), 2 cheaps 5mil max, and than either 2 about 7-8 mids(Lamps, HBA, Eriksen)- or this could be 9 mil and 6 mil

      Defense of 2 6 mil guys, 1 4.5 and 2 4 mil guys
      2 4.5 keepers

Always play the 2 expensive keepers but rotate the cheap mids and cheap defenders with some 4 defender lineups.

    Hi,

    My team is:

    Mig/Davies
    Vidic/Coleman/Sakho/Chester/Gabbidon
    Wally/Silva/Ozil/Brady/Whittingham
    Soldado/Benteke/Sturridge

Basically I'm going to play 3-4-3 (I don't believe that this CS galore is gonna last for long) but with Brady/Whittingham as my rotating mids I can easily line up Chester or Gabbidon if they play nice fix at home and shift to 4-3-3.

In any case, I'm not sure if Ozil and Wally isn't a bit of overkill?

    What do you think?

    Greetings, oh knowledgeable ones!
Despite using my 2FTs, I dropped nearly 140k places last week – so my confidence has taken a knock.
My idea (it's not smart enough to call a plan) is to gradually move from:
Migs, Boruc - Chester, Ivan, Collins, TOURE, BRAYFORD - Wally, Kim, Koren, SILVA, NOLAN -
RVP, Giroud, DZEKO - .4 in bank
    to:
Migs, Boruc; Chester, Ivan, Collins, DEMICHELIS, SAKHO - Wally, Kim, Koren, MOSES, ERIKSEN - RVP, Giroud, LUKAKU (or Bent, depending on funds).
Now. I don't want to WC. So, should I:
    A) Gradually move, using FTs?
    B) Take some hits (if so, where)?
    C) Come up with a better plan?

    Thanks for any advice.

      C) I don't like any of the 5 you want in. Initially I thought you had manufactured a move for RVP in the 2nd team (seeing him in capitals) but then I realised you have him.

This is my 7th season of playing this game and what alarms me is that you are looking at 5 players that have all moved to a new team and in my experience that usually fails and that's if in deed they start, which for me some of them will be on the bench.

Schurrle is an interesting player to monitor IMO. Mourinho seems to be taking a liking to deploying him on the right wing for Chelsea, wonder if he will become one of his favourites there. There for his pace and crossing, maybe shades of di Maria at Real, anyone? Assisted Torres' opener against Bayern no less.

Not sure about FPL potential though. Still, your honour, in mitigation he is a midfielder and 7.6.

He's in my team currently. Watching Aspas vs. Vidic will surely make Rogers think twice about picking him. Just not physical enough to be part of the forward line.

One thing is for certain, Moses is a tank.

Does this 3-4-3, 3 players in defence for Liverpool include Enrique? Why am I constantly wondering whether he'll keep his place? He's great, already he's been worthwhile, my top scoring player.

Swansea's Hernandez : can't see the fuss myself. Played 3 games when other attacking Swans were average and made him look like Messi.

Best Hernandez in PL is on United's bench. Now that's a real waste. Would have loved to see him loaned to another PL team.

yeah i dont get it either, it just stinks of desperation because the usual points scorers have been quite. the reality is that hardly anyone mentioned him before the recent GW & for a reason.

I thought he had real potential last year, never really got any form though.

I think he's a bit lightweight still for the PL, considering how good Dyer and Routledge have been since promotion, he should have been much better so far.

With Europa league matches this season, I'll avoid until they exit

Hi people, would really appreciate your thoughts on my WC team. A bit different but going for differentials in my ML

    Migs (Boruc)

    Vidic Koscelny Sakho Dawson (Chester)

    Ozil Lamps Barfa (Brady, Kaca)

    Studge Benteke Rooney (c)

Having Rooney instead of RVP allows me to improve my defence but please help if ive made any glaring mistakes.......

Rooney is the stand-out issue for me... yes he's great but has been injured and will be rotated! Especially as a captain... but is a great differential and frees up money for elsewhere. Nice looking team

U don't need "coverage" if there are other options that will reap the same points.

Downgrade Rooney > Giroud / Lukaku and upgrade Brady or Kaca to Nolan

Interesting post from NATALIE ROONEY this morning relating to Marko Arnautovic.
Wanted to get the thoughts of the afternoon team on it as been thinking about this and possibly incorporating as an option.

Arnautovic is............ "a striker listed as a midfielder and Stoke don't have anyone bar Crouch so he'll get a lot of game time plus clean sheet bonuses as a striker"

Thoughts from the afternoon gurus ?

He could be worth monitoring, especially if OOP. Stoke have looked surprisingly dynamic (for stoke) under Hughes so it could be a good love eventually!

He has a reputation, but believe Hughes and experience around him in Stoke team can bring him in line.

Campbell is going up in price tonight. I'm on my wildcard and my current (temporary) frontline is Sturridge-Giroud-Soldado. Now, I intend to keep Studge and Giroud and they have gone up in price already so there's no way I'm losing them for Campbell. Soldado has given me a 0.1 rise, but will he go up again? Or should I get Campbell in for him and hope he gets a double rise? Basically which one of Soldado and Campbell will rise twice? Thanks for your thoughts guys. 🙂

I'm on Campbell. Had Soldado but took the .1. Might bring him back in if and when he/spurs start firing but until then I'm just hoping for that rise.

There's a chance neither of them will rise twice from here. Campbell probably more likely of the two as he's much closer.

If what you mean is that Soldado's price has risen by 0.1 since you got him, then he may well rise again to give you a 0.1 sale value increase.

If you mean that Soldado's sale value for you has risen by 0.1 (i.e. you had him since 9.5) then there's no point selling him unless you're certain you don't want him back.

Yeah, it's the former. Got him for 9.6 and now he's up to 9.7. Sorry, should've specified that. And cheers both for your replies.

Campbell more likely to rise twice than Soldado. In fact, I did Soldado to Campbell today in the hope that there'll be a profit on him (which I doubt, but got to try).

          A) Eriksen 8m, I think he play AMC support Soldado and run all area when attacking
          B) Lamela 9m, I never see him play
          C) Soldado got in team, 20+ Goal in La Liga great Poacher like Ruud, RVP

          Hey guys! Anyone fancy RMT?

          Migs / 4.0

Coleman / Agger / Zab / Vidic (Collins)

Wally / Lamps / BArfa (Brady, Barkley)

          Soldado / Giroud / Sturridge

          My only issue;
          - Is Arfa a decent pick?
          - Any better cheap MFs?
          - Agger, Jose or Sakho(iffy to start)

Just Vidic from Man U could be a problem. Also check who you would captain each week as essentially that player forms 1/6th of your team.
