In what proved a frantic final 24-hours of the summer transfer window, Steve Clarke broke West Brom’s club transfer record to acquire Stephane Sessegnon from Sunderland. The Benin international had been on the market all summer and, despite interest from cash-rich clubs in Qatar, makes his way to the Hawthorns in a reported £6m deal.

Sessegnon has signed a three-year contract with the midlands outfit and after being omitted from the Black Cats’ previous match day squad due to off-field indiscretions, is looking forward to starting afresh:

“It’s been a long day but I am just happy to sign for West Brom. West Brom play very good football and have good players so for me it’s a great choice. The gaffer said to me he wanted me because he wants to play more football, add more movement and create chances. I’m happy to sign for West Brom and I’m excited to start now.”

The History

The 29-year-old’s career began back in the 2003/04 season, where he played twice for Requins de l’Atlantique in his native Benin. Sessegnon then made his way to France the following year to play his trade for Ligue 2 outfit US Créteil-Lusitanos – over the course of a couple of campaigns, he turned out 68 times and found the net on 10 occasions.

Snapped up by top-flight Le Mans in the summer of 2006, Sessegnon was initially utilised as a defensive midfielder before being moved further up the pitch; having registered six goals and eight assists in 61 league matches, he was soon on his way again, with Paris Saint-Germain beating the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle to his signature in August 2008.

Sessegnon’s first couple of years in the French capital proved successful. Installed as a first-team regular by Paul Le Guen, he produced nine goals and 14 assists from 63 appearances but a chance in management saw him omitted from the starting line-up for the start of 2010/11. The midfielder featured 14 times in the first half of the season but with 10 of these appearances coming courtesy of the bench, he decided to move to Sunderland when the January transfer window opened.

Over his first few months on Wearside, the playmaker managed three goals and a pair of assists from 14 league matches before registering 14 goals and 17 assists in 71 league games across the next two seasons – producing scores of 161 and 141 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Sessegnon started the first two fixtures for Paolo Di Canio’s side this term before being dropped for the Gameweek 3 loss at Palace due to disciplinary reasons. In terms of internationals, the Baggies new boy has turned out for Benin 48 times and grabbed nine goals.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind West Brom are the only side yet to find the net over the first three Gameweeks, Clarke’s last-minute shopping spree was understandable. The Baggies boss also snapped up Victor Anichebe from Everton and Marseille’s Morgan Amalfitano and, in an interview with the official website, revealed his hopes for the season ahead:

“We needed to strengthen in the forward areas and we’re very hopeful that Stephane and Victor will fit the bill. Stephane is quick and direct and can be a match-winner. He has the individual skills that can turn a game. He creates chances for others as well as scoring his fair share of goals. Along with Morgan, I’m hoping Stephane will add more creativity to the team.”

Sessegnon’s versatility is likely to work in his favour within Clarke’s ever-changing tactical set-ups. Already this season, the midlands side have trialled 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 systems without success – while the record signing could be fielded wide right in the front three, he also offers Clarke the option of returning to last term’s preferred 4-2-3-1, with Sessegnon moved to the role in “the hole” behind a lone forward.

Given the outlay on the Benin international, you’d expect to see him installed in the first XI but with a multitude of attacking midfield options available, it remains to be seen just where Scott Sinclair, James Morrison, Chris Brunt and Graham Dorrans stand in the pecking order. Nevertheless, neither Sessegnon, or West Brom, have done anything to persuade us they are worthy of investment thus far, with Fantasy managers likely to steer well clear until there’s a turnaround in fortunes.

His price, when compared with fellow Baggies, hardly helps Sessegnon’s case, though. Coming in at 6.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.7 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, the former Sunderland man is far more expensive than any of Clarke’s main midfielders and, in terms of FPL, is also costlier than the likes of Nicolas Anelka (5.4) and Anichebe (5.3).

With a schedule that hands the midlands outfit showdowns with United, Arsenal and Liverpool in the next six, in addition to a trip to neighbours Stoke, there’s little reason for optimism right now – Fantasy managers will be more than happy to steer clear for the short-term and, unless Clarke can get his side firing again, perhaps beyond.

@ Forca and Weeurquahrt on Giroud being lucky

guys this is just my opinon. So I can be 100% wrong. But for me the first goal was genius, second goal he was lucky that his awful touch landed in front of him and vs Tott he was lukcy to have Dawson the slowest CB in the league covering him in a high line- huge defensive error

Giroud has scored with 3 out of his 4 shots on target. Last season he scored every 4th shot on target. And his shots to shot on target ratio has not changed. I see a huge downgrade coming here for him.

But I will be the first to admit I am wrong if he keeps scoring, but this is just the strategy I follow.

      i'll say it again

as player i dont rate him at all

BUT he is nailed on striker who playing for ARSENAL with price of only 8.5M

not having him in team is big big mistake

with Ozil arrival he will be even more dangerous

Chamach and Bentner were nailed on for some runs as well. I know he will be good value, but Sturridge if fit will be man with the golden boot and also Benteke will get more pts than him. Soldado is just so prolific and if Eriksen and Lamela can improve him he could be better too. And I personally want RVP for now as well. With mids sucking, I prefer to pay the extra cash for proven strikers who will deliver

Really the question of Giroud or not is 'do you rank him in the top 3 FPL strikers' and I place him at 4th so it's a borderline no from me. Main reason being that Walcott basically a striker and takes some of his goals.

When it comes to FF, jesus christ, give me a lucky player every day of the week.

As long as they stick the ball in the back of the net, who cares?

His goals against Villa and Spurs were brilliant strikers goals but the Fulham goal was flukey.

Though he does look a lot better this season, think he'll be pushing 20+ goals this season, especially with Cazorla and Ozil supplying the ammo.

The problem with luck - if it really is luck - is that you can't rely on it. It can and usually does dry up at any point. Skill on the other hand is a reliable predictor of goals.

Luck never continues long term. NEVER. In order to be worth our attention he will need to improve his shooting and getting shots on target. I prefer greedy players who already can find the frame like Soldado, Sturridge, RVP. Benteke, Soldado(if he gets more service), and Suarez

Ok so here is my current situation:

    GK: Mignolet (Davis)
DEF: Zabaleta, Coleman, Koscielny (Chester) (McNaughton)
MID: Walcott, Coutinho, Silva, Brady (Colback)
    ATT: Soldado, Sturridge, Giroud

    1.2 mil in the bank.

Now, I WAS happy with this team, haven already taken a 4 point hit this week to do:

    Mirallas -> Brady
    Lambert -> Giroud

But of course, good things don’t last. With silva and Sturridge (questionably) injured, at least for this week, I am presented with a problem. I am perfectly happy with Chester coming off the bench but Colback will be slaughtered by arsenal and McNaughton doesn’t play. Now, this shouldn’t be enough to herald the use of a WC, I understand that. But I wanted to see if I could get some suggestions on these possible solutions.

Option 1: WC, erase 4 point hit and get the following team:

    GK: Mignolet (Davis)
DEF: Zabaleta, Coleman, Koscielny, Terry (Chester/McNaughton)
MID: Walcott, Coutinho, Fellaini (Brady/Whittingham) (Ward-Prowse)
    ATT: Soldado, Giroud, Sturridge/Benteke

    A few points here:

    1) Unfortunately I am .1 short of having both Brady (at 5.1) and Chester (at 4) in the same team as my subs, as I only have essentially 9 mil to fill those two spots. Do I go for whittingham over Brady and keep Chester, do I keep Brady and keep McNaughton (who is at 3.9 and won’t play), or do I downgrade Ward-Prowse to a mid who has dropped to 4.4 and probably won’t play. I like Brady, but is whittingham also on pens etc. for Cardiff?

    2) I am slightly reluctant in picking Fellaini, however I am hoping that he starts further forward pushing Carrick into the holding midfield role. For 8.5, I think that he is reasonable Man U cover as I have no Man U player otherwise, and he also remains within the price range of some of the premium mids for later upgrades.

    3) Should I pick Terry as a 6mil defender or someone else such as Vidic etc.?

    4) I am really torn but would have to go heart over head in still picking Sturridge over benteke. As a Newcastle fan, I just can’t bring myself to put in Benteke, as he is playing against Newcastle. Perhaps, the following week I could make that transfer, or not at all. Am I being an idiot?

Option 2: Ride the storm, keep the faith and do nothing

My head says that a WC might not be the right thing to do given the team I have to start with. But I am sorely tempted and tbh I really like the flexibility of my WC team.

Also, even if, as I believe the consensus will be, you believe I should NOT WC, I would still appreciate your views on the potential team I posted 🙂

Sorry about such a long post! Any help on any of these points would be greatly appreciated!

      1 keep as is
2 Better options elsewhere for the cash ie Hernandez HBA Lampard
3 CL will cause rotation issues with both of those options. I'd consider Enrique
4 Club loyalty has no place in this game. Look at fixtures if form is equal in your opinion

Those are your points answered at least!

Thankyou for your feedback. A few comments:

2 - Lampard's position is not confirmed given his age/CL/Chelsea's ridiculously packed midfield, HBA (even as a Newcastle fan) is far too unpredictable for me and is not as suited to FPL as everyone would appear to think, Hernandez -> more likely option though when you compare him to the player that is being taken out he really doesn't compare in terms of class or likely returns.

3 - I already have Mignolet in goals so I was looking for a way into the Chelsea/Man U defense for 6mil or under.

4 - I would disagree that there is no place for club loyalty. I honestly believe that Newcastle have the ability to beat Aston Villa and hold off Benteke. If I did not, I wouldn't be enough of a fan. As such, I would not be picking him as I honestly believed that he would not score. If I am wrong, fair call. If I am right, it's a win in that Newcastle has won/played well and a win in that everybody who captained him expecting big things falls flat.

However, as I said, I appreciate your feedback.

Don't WC. You're potential team isn't significantly better than your current team. Wait for the pressers and assess the situation. If both Sturridge and Silva are confirmed out then take another hit and transfer one.

The only Utd attacking coverage currently worth considering is RVP. Rooney, Nani and Kagawa are potential candidates if they get starts. Not Fellaini.

Would Fellaini not be a better candidate than say Nani and Kagawa? Neither are confirmed of starts and it's all down to luck as to whether they perform or not. Fellaini is guaranteed a start, and is a threat off set-pieces etc.

H/ever, I see your point, as I was always skeptical of Fellaini's worth.

Fifas defensive positioning is suspect so I think that weakens 3 at the back because positional mistakes are even more important with fewer defenders. I think it's a very powerful formation if you are skilled at defending which is fair enough.

Unfortunately! Young isn't selfish in tracking back though and he offers far more in the attacking third (his dives for a start). Something tells me that Woy doesn't see it that way though...

I've always maintained that counter attacking is our best hope. We have a lot of players who have pace so why not make use of them.

Yeah I agree on all those points, I do think 3-5-3 is a surprisingly good fit for the personnel we have though. Johnson and Baines are one of only a few fullbacks I think would play wingback well. We have a good crop of CBs.

Too true. Can you remember if Liverpool were playing 3 at the back around euro 96 when England did? Vague memory.

            Juventus/Italy makes their 3-5-2 work.

You need a defender who is comfortable with the ball at his feet to play three at the back, someone like Luiz who can bring the ball out and the LM and RM can tuck in when he does so. England's defenders are not comfortable with the ball at their feet.

Probably one of the most glaring problems with us playing 3 at the back yes. I stuck Cahill in the middle because he seems to get forward a lot , but he is not exactly a distributor. Jones actually was entrusted with similar ball carrying responsibilities you describe when deployed at DM by SAF, but admittedly he's always looked like an odd fit there.

Almost tempted to suggest Carrick but he was exposed in the air.

While sitting here today very tempted to make a few transfers based on performances over the opening 3 weeks of the season, I had a quick look back to this time last year! Here are a few interesting facts I discovered...

After 3 games last season, Man City and Man Utd had both conceeded 5 goals each, with neither club yet managing a clean sheet. In fact City would wait until GW7 for their first one, yet ended up with the most in the PL, 18. United would later go on a run of 6 in a row!

Liverpool conceeded 7 goals in their first 3 games, but went on to provide us with 14 clean sheets over the season. Arsenal hadn't conceeded at all at this stage last season, prompting many of us on wildcards to go heavy on their defence..they then conceeded goals in all of their next 4 matches!

Those of us looking for budget defenders at this stage might have been impressed by Wigan keeping a clean sheet in their first away match of the season..but they followed this up with only 4 more, home or away, all season, the next one in November!

West Brom had already kept 2 clean sheets by now and their defenders looked good value..but they followed this up with only 5 more all season.

Spurs had neither won a game nor kept a clean sheet.

Stoke's attack/midfield looked promising as they scored 3 times in their first 2 away matches. They ended the season as the league's second lowest scorers.

Player wise, as has been well documented here already, Gareth Bale had neither scored nor assisted at this stage last season. Benteke (19) hadn't got on the score sheet either. While Suarez (23) and Lukaku (17) had scored 1 each.

Down at Chelsea, new boy Hazard was the must have player, especially for the opening double gameweek, while Mata was nowhere..yet the Spaniard ended the season with 2 more goals, 2 more assists and 22 more points than the Belgian. Torres already had 2 goals, prompting many of us to wonder if he was back in business...he'd score only 6 more in the league all season.

This is just meant as a fun lookback to where we were during the Sept break last season..but there is a serious point too I think and that's to try not to be too too influenced by the opening weeks of a season, which can throw up some strange results, form and apparent patterns, which can sometimes be misleading!

After all, this time next year a smiliar exercise would note that United and Everton both failed to score for 2 consecutive matches, Everton didn't win at all, West Ham kept 2 clean sheets, Spurs only scored penalties etc etc. I wouldn't mind betting things will change on those fronts and many more over the next few weeks!

Good Luck with your wildcards/transfers 🙂

    Mignolet / 4.0

    Zabaleta / Coleman / Collins / Chester / Gabbidon (or other 4.0)

I have both of them now. Or before I WC-ed, that is.

Not sure which one to keep. But it's easier to go Soldado > Sturridge than the other way around later on.

Yeah you can. Captain someone in the first day fixtures (17th September) i.e: Ronaldo, then if he fails, captain someone in the second day fixtures (18th September) i.e: Messi.

Who's the better left-back option for England at this moment? I personally believe Baines should get the nod ahead of Cole. Baines' raids down the flanks, his crossing ability and free kicks does stand out when compared to Cole, No? I understand Cole hasn't had any tough competition previously. But now, Baines is a serious contender for the starting berth. What say?

Cole's a better defender and still very good going forward. Baines is great for creating chances. I'd rotate depending on opposition
