[sbu_large_image] The Knee Jerk

Arsenal’s young gun comes to the fore to steal Mesut Ozil’s thunder. Tottenham’s icy finisher shows his worth to overshadow their own debutant, while the Gunners top scorer gives his owners a scare by limping off with a knee problem.

The Game Changer

All eyes were on Mesut Ozil’s performance on his debut and, while the German’s display exuded class, composure and the first of many assists, it was Aaron Ramsey who will hog the headlines. A brace of goals capped what has been a hugely impressive season so far for the young Welshman – a player who has suddenly emerged from the shadow of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, to promote himself as a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of controlling matches and scoring goals.

Ramsey’s smart volley and a slotted finish from Olivier Giroud’s pass took him to five goals in all competitions – matching his total from last season. Quite simply, Ramsey is a player reborn at a time when the Arsenal midfield looks set to be rejuvenated by Ozil’s promptings and uncanny eye for the killer pass.

While the pre-match effort concentrated on how to juggle the cash to possibly accomodate Ozil’s price tag, Ramsey is available for just 5.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), £5.8 million in the Sky Sports game and £2.5 million in the Sun Dream Team – a game which has him ranked as the top midfielder.

Today’s returns will surely see his stock soar further, as Fantasy managers seriously consider loading up on Arsenal’s attacking assets as the creativity and opportunities for goals in the Gunners camp hits new heights. Indeed, with Giroud finding consistency up front, there’s even a case for a switch in emphasis, away from the heavy hitting midfield trio of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Ozil with a Ramsey/Giroud pairing currently offering strong value.

A late injury scare for Giroud may just change all that, however. The Frenchman was withdrawn late on with a knee problem and we’re awaiting news on the extent of the damage.

The Underused

While Ramsey is the darling on one side of north London, Gylfi Sigurdsson was the toast of White Hart Lane. Given the opportunity to impress by Andre Villas-Boas, the Icelander seized the day, providing a stunning reminder of his goalscoring ability as Spurs eased past a disappointing Norwich.

Like Ozil, Spurs had their own glittering debutant on show. Christian Eriksen’s performance, embroidered by a debut assist, will doubtless have piqued the interest of Fantasy managers. It was Sigurdsson who provided the end product, however.

At just 6.9 in the FPL, we now find ourselves reassessing his potential. While Eriksen and Erik Lamela offer the glamour and excitement of new arrivals at the Lane, Siggurdsson’s talent as a Fantasy asset is proven from his season at Swansea. If he can cement his starting role, he could yet make a return to the reckoning and draw investment away from Tottenham’s expensive imports.

The Selection Poser

Giroud’s injury is an immediate concern for many – given that he is already the most popular transfer target amongst the forwards following today’s goal and assist haul, clearly there is an urgent need for clarity.

Subject to over 268,000 transfers in over the international fortnight, he has already acquired over 15,000 new owners on the back of this afternoon’s display but the bandwagon will surely slow on the back of his withdrawal.

Post-match, Wenger was asked whether the Frenchman would be fit for the midweek Champions League match against Marseille but gave little away:

“That’s my worry today after the game. We are very thin at the moment. [It is] a knee problem. He is the player at the moment that would be very difficult for us [to replace.]”

With Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo out and Nicklas Bendtner far from match-fit, Wenger’s forward options are stretched to threadbare already. A potential absence for Giroud would be a massive blow to his Fantasy owners but could, in turn, promote Walcott as the central option if the prognosis proves pessimistic. Wenger’s next injury update is already eagerly awaited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

RVP owners how was that 6pts, great wasn't it and what about wc'ers that put him in LOL...

like i said this weekend should end anyone having RVP in their teams until your team value is high and it doesn't jeopardize the rest of your team which should be in time for jan wc. 14mil he aint worth it he's no henry or ronaldo in this game. Who cares if hes scoring just ignore him until Jan, Man utd supporters obviously will have him in their teams because he's their only consistent pts scorer the rest should just ignore him like i said.

For him to be worth 14 he has to be averaging 15+ pts each gameweek for you.

        good for now i guess

rvp in half way through should be all you need.

i'll only consider defense from your team. Fellaini should do well aswell but won't score as much as he did last season in this team.

i think going without him makes sense when the likes of rooney, sturridge, giroud, benteke, soldado are on form...with suarez coming back... think i'll just take the risk and hope for only a handful of the inevitable double figure hauls

right now i think you go with tekkers studge and giroud.

studge will keep his spot up top whether Suarez plays or not. not that it really matters since his record for pool is ridiculous can't believe he isn't in more teams. season keeper for me

tekkers same aswell early fixtures proved he's fixture proof. season keeper

Giroud on form right now so you go with him until jan since Arsenal may bring someone else in then. should get atleast 15 goals this season. 100% he won't continue scoring like this so thats when you can bring lukaku in or now if you want instead.

Lukaku is another option since he scored 17 last season and everton are better then west brom. will start all games otherwise they would not have loaned him their plus he's better then all their strikers.

"lost credibility" don't think so he has to produce that 1st up like i said henry and ronlado as a mid averaged more then him and RVP for that price he needs to score twice until you can afford to have a better team.

there's way too many options now people who have him have weaker teams and it will cost them.

So... what have we learnt so far?

The things I've learnt is that "nailed on" is very important and form and fixtures still works. Combine the 2 and you're laughing.

    Repost...

What are fellow fools planning on doing with Nani? I'm thinking of cutting my losses and immediately getting rid. It seems like chasing points, but Ramsey has great fixtures and if nothing else he should be a reasonable short term punt with Caz/Arteta/Ox/Pod all out injured.

Will also leave me more than enough to get RVP for any of my current front 3 for GW6, if I feel so inclined.

    Boruc, Davis
    Zabaleta, Terry, Toure, Chester, Ward
    Walcott, Nani, Mirallas, Nolan, Morrison
    Giroud, Sturridge, Soldado

I know. Last minute panic at no United coverage for this week.

I don't see how Wenger can drop Ramsey as things stand - he's been our best player this season. I think he's a lock at least until Arteta returns, and even then, on form he starts ahead of Arteta and Wilshere imo.

        And at 5.6m, he's a bargain.

I actually think Wilshere will be most at threat. Ramsey's been playing better than him for > 6 months now, and we all now our record with Arteta in the team. Big season for Jack - let's hope Ramsey's form pushes him on.

True that. There was some logic to getting Nani though -just been handed a 5 year contract, predicted to start by most, looked dangerous in the last game. It was ultimately flawed logic, but nonetheless...

Fair point, although I think he'll play the double pivot role, which means it's only really Arteta, Wilshere and Flamini he's up against. And I can't see him being dropped anytime soon given his form.

Cheers 4Vets! Barfa seems a great shout due to form, playing oop and being on pens, but his fixtures aren't that great and neither are Newcastle.

To be quite honest, I am pretty baffled by all the RVP opinions, whether you own him or not. So he didn't score as well as his owners would have expected in a home game vs a newly promoted side playing with 10 men for a half, but this isn't a one-gameweek game (obviously), hence it is impossible to judge whether he's worth 14m after just 4 gameweeks. When he was scoring for fun last season (including v top sides) then blanked against a couple of so called "weaker" sides, no one was discussing whether he was worth it, he was only viewed as 'essential', even though he was slightly cheaper last season. What im saying is, whether you have RVP or not, WC'd him in or went for Giroud etc instead and feeling all smug after ONE GW, the pros and cons of owning him should surely be evaluated after at least a few more GW (especially with Utd's medium term fixtures), and until then, just stick to your gut feeling and if RVP racks in the points, then good for RVP owners, and if not, the Ozil-9m striker owners can say they told you so. But for now, it's pretty pointless discussing whether he's 'worth it' after only a few GWs in my opinion.

Ya about 4 or 5, depends on undercard. I think its either best to try get couple hours sleep first and get up then or if you have enough drink keep going as long as you can 😉

Nani -> Barfa or Ramsey this week?

If I go Barfa then I can't afford RVP in GW6.
