Arsenal’s young gun comes to the fore to steal Mesut Ozil’s thunder. Tottenham’s icy finisher shows his worth to overshadow their own debutant, while the Gunners top scorer gives his owners a scare by limping off with a knee problem.

The Game Changer

All eyes were on Mesut Ozil’s performance on his debut and, while the German’s display exuded class, composure and the first of many assists, it was Aaron Ramsey who will hog the headlines. A brace of goals capped what has been a hugely impressive season so far for the young Welshman – a player who has suddenly emerged from the shadow of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, to promote himself as a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of controlling matches and scoring goals.

Ramsey’s smart volley and a slotted finish from Olivier Giroud’s pass took him to five goals in all competitions – matching his total from last season. Quite simply, Ramsey is a player reborn at a time when the Arsenal midfield looks set to be rejuvenated by Ozil’s promptings and uncanny eye for the killer pass.

While the pre-match effort concentrated on how to juggle the cash to possibly accomodate Ozil’s price tag, Ramsey is available for just 5.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), £5.8 million in the Sky Sports game and £2.5 million in the Sun Dream Team – a game which has him ranked as the top midfielder.

Today’s returns will surely see his stock soar further, as Fantasy managers seriously consider loading up on Arsenal’s attacking assets as the creativity and opportunities for goals in the Gunners camp hits new heights. Indeed, with Giroud finding consistency up front, there’s even a case for a switch in emphasis, away from the heavy hitting midfield trio of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Ozil with a Ramsey/Giroud pairing currently offering strong value.

A late injury scare for Giroud may just change all that, however. The Frenchman was withdrawn late on with a knee problem and we’re awaiting news on the extent of the damage.

The Underused

While Ramsey is the darling on one side of north London, Gylfi Sigurdsson was the toast of White Hart Lane. Given the opportunity to impress by Andre Villas-Boas, the Icelander seized the day, providing a stunning reminder of his goalscoring ability as Spurs eased past a disappointing Norwich.

Like Ozil, Spurs had their own glittering debutant on show. Christian Eriksen’s performance, embroidered by a debut assist, will doubtless have piqued the interest of Fantasy managers. It was Sigurdsson who provided the end product, however.

At just 6.9 in the FPL, we now find ourselves reassessing his potential. While Eriksen and Erik Lamela offer the glamour and excitement of new arrivals at the Lane, Siggurdsson’s talent as a Fantasy asset is proven from his season at Swansea. If he can cement his starting role, he could yet make a return to the reckoning and draw investment away from Tottenham’s expensive imports.

The Selection Poser

Giroud’s injury is an immediate concern for many – given that he is already the most popular transfer target amongst the forwards following today’s goal and assist haul, clearly there is an urgent need for clarity.

Subject to over 268,000 transfers in over the international fortnight, he has already acquired over 15,000 new owners on the back of this afternoon’s display but the bandwagon will surely slow on the back of his withdrawal.

Post-match, Wenger was asked whether the Frenchman would be fit for the midweek Champions League match against Marseille but gave little away:

“That’s my worry today after the game. We are very thin at the moment. [It is] a knee problem. He is the player at the moment that would be very difficult for us [to replace.]”

With Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo out and Nicklas Bendtner far from match-fit, Wenger’s forward options are stretched to threadbare already. A potential absence for Giroud would be a massive blow to his Fantasy owners but could, in turn, promote Walcott as the central option if the prognosis proves pessimistic. Wenger’s next injury update is already eagerly awaited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

On a wc, is 3 Spurs and 3 Arsenal overkill? (Walker, Mert, Eriksen, Ozil, Walcott, Soldado)....they just have so many good options to go with their fixtures

I'd go for Walker/Dawson if you're feeling brave, Eriksen, Walcott and Giroud.

2 of each. 10.0m is still a bit too much to spend on Ozil imo.

Also, Arsenal defense ain't the best atm. Kos is a liability, and Szczesny isn't a top keeper. Better options at 5.5m.

    Would u WC this team??

    Boruc (foster)
    ivan coleman murner (chester ward)
    wally coutinho brady tarabt (kim)
    soldado lambert Rvp

    Or do....
A: Taarabt >> Pablo...any idea why taarab didn't play? is he droppin in price tonight?
    B: Taarabt >> Ramsey
    C: Taarabt + Foster >> Barfa + myhill (-4)...but how are barfa's fixtures?
    D: Taarabt + Soldado >> Barfa + Giroud (-4)

      Yeah I'd WC that.

I would change the keepers, most of the defense (Ward isn't playing anymore?) and you're lacking the up and coming bandwagons in Eriksen and Ben Arfa with no easy way to get them.

No, I would not. You are unlucky about Soldado. He will score in the next match against Cardiff. Mark my words!

Ben Arfa faces - Hull(H), Everton(A), Cardiff(A), Liverpool(H) - I would not call that a rosy fixture, but Ben Arfa is a class player.

Taarabt and Foster needs to go this week. You can replace Taarabt with Kacaniklic from the same team. He got 2 starts in the last 2 matches and is a good potential. The bandwagon here will start later after he scores.

I am myself confused about the pairing with Boruc.

What order would you rate the pool, arse and tott players from their team respectively? I would:

Pool: Suarez > Sturridge > Coutinho ( Suarez to return with a bang, good national team form)

Arsenal: Giroud > Walcott > Ozil (Giroud pips it just on current form)

Tottenham: Lamela > Soldado > Eriksen (tough to pick this one)

I think it's only a matter of time before the mids start delivering, and there are glimpses already. Ben Arfa looks to have propelled himself into our midfield templates along with Walcott, and if Eriksen can keep delivering, that's 3 spots done already. That just leaves us with needing one of Coutinho, Silva, Hazard, Mata, Ozil to start tearing it up and voila! That's our power 4 midfield already plus a Brady/Redmond and we're back to where we started.

Strikers are looking great right now, I'm just surprised that it's the 9.0 bracket strikers that are providing the firepower to our teams this year. I would not have predicted that, and it's a first. Last year, it was very much RvP, Suarez, Lambert.

I think it's also more of a case of picking a careful back 3 with good team coverage. There are great deals to be had. We could be looking at something like:

Dawson, Coleman, Kelly in a few weeks.

Well said, I can see the light too. Sitting on top of the explosion imminent Özil bandwagon.

You sold on Eriksen? Once Lamela gets stuck into the first XI, you'd think they'll be sharing the set-pieces. Just seems like a wait and see option you know. Every gw, a new Spurs mid seems to be showing promise - Paulinho, Lamela (sub) and now Eriksen/Siggy.

The 9 mil bracket are god-send at the moment. And the likes of Roo/Aguero/Suarez are about to enter the fore as well. Makes RvP not so essential after all (wouldn't have dared to say that before the Palace game)

Kelly from Pool? Thought Wisdom was backup

Yeah it might be Wisdom, but the fact doesn't change, we get a sub 5.0 LPool defender for a few weeks.

I'm sold on Eriksen. He was great today, controlled play and looked like he was right at home. I think the introduction of Lamela won't change much. Eriksen will play in the hole with Lamela replacing Townsend on the wing. I also think Eriksen willl keep set pieces. Lamela might take the odd direct FK but Eriksen will take everything else.

I really don't. Atm, I think the strategy of alternating 4-3-3 and 5-2-3 is the way forward unless a third mid can emerge as a regular pick. HBA may be a short-term fix but a Wally-Eriksen-HBA squad is still prone to injury.

Question 1: Are you wanting to bring in Rooney this week or Suarez next week for Aguero? With the latter, it might just be worth sticking out one more with Aguero.

Q2: Or would you rather follow the crowd and bring in either Sturridge or Giroud, and have some spending money?

If you have money to spend or not decides what you do about the rest.

kind of surprised no one has a used id name as The Knee Jerk, would be a fine addition alongside Captain Hindsight and Advice Mallard

on that note, good night/day to all, and may those watching enjoy the fight

My favourite triggerlips BS moment: when he posted a Guardian teamsheet for Man City v Hull on the morning of the deadline to prove that Dzeko would be benched.

My favorite was when he posted some stats in pre-season, he got chances and chances created mixed up and yet somehow came to his desired conclusion. Eventually became a hot-topic and Zep came out of hiding to say - "Coma ,Choma ,Comha...." something like that. No offence Trigger, we love you for your personality (you are the Deadzone Forca in a sense) 🙂

My pre seson green topics included

        1) An article on why Coleman wasnt worth the money
        2) Why two cheap keepers were better than mingolet and a 4.00
        3) An article on why Giroud was one of the worst strikers in the league

I now have Coleman, Mingolet and Giroud 😀

Haha yeah at least you can own up.

I was in the Mignolet camp big time, but got so caught up saving 0.5m I was swayed by your two cheap argument..

I did value Coleman + Giroud though. My big mistake was defending Lukaku and putting in Mirallas, but I guess I wasn't the only one.

tbf the two cheap keeper argument was fine when Toure was looking like he was set for the season in the pool back four. And nobody could of predicted the Mingolet penalty save that propelled him to the top of the rankings.
The jury still out imo. An injury to Mingle could leave us keeperless

i think otherwise, that Lamps may play most EPL games. Believe he didn't start yesterday because he did play 180 min during the int'l break after all.

but Lampard owner here and might just be wishing that to be the case.

Repost. lost on bottom of previous page.

The comparison between Ozil and Rooney is quite interesting. Rooney created more chances and had 9 touches in the box. With the combined goal threat at creativity to set up RVP, he could be a great alternative for RVP-less teams.
