Clean sheets are the order of the day once again as Southampton and West Ham play out a goalless draw in Sunday’s only fixture. While the two sides continue to impress defensively, their inability to find the net is a real concern – both have notched just twice over the opening four fixtures:

The Game Changer

Jussi Jaaskelainen’s heroics between the sticks were once again crucial to the Hammers’ prospects today. Helping his side to a vital point at St Mary’s, the Finnish star denied Mauricio Pochettino’s side with five saves to register his third clean sheet in four matches – with just a single goal conceded to Stoke so far, the London outfit have been superb at the back and somewhat atoned for the problems up front which have seen them fail to score in three successive matches.

Up next for the Hammers is a home game against an Everton side that have one goal in three before a trip to Hull – more defensive points look likely before the schedule takes a turn for the worse from Gameweek 7 onwards.

The Underused

Seemingly out of favour under Pochettino, Nathaniel Clyne returned to the Southampton first XI for the first time this term. The right-back turned in an impressive showing and with a couple of bonus points also on the cards, he could return to Fantasy radars after shedding over 24,000 owners and dropping down to 4.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – at least 0.2 cheaper than any other regular in the Saints’ defence.

With four kind home games (CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL) and a trip to Stoke in the next seven, Clyne looks set for further returns as Pochettino’s look to continue a run that has now seen them concede just twice in the opening four Gameweeks.

The Selection Poser

Clyne’s return was one of three changes from Pochettino today as Luke Shaw and Jay Rodriguez were also named in the starting line-up. While Shaw’s return was expected after he proved his fitness for the England Under 21s over the last week, his owners will be concerned after he was subbed off towards the end of the match – the player has since taken to twitter to reveal his withdrawal was due to cramp but his propensity for picking up niggles and failing to last 90 minutes is clearly becoming an issue.

Pochettino’s decision to hand Rodriguez a chance proved frustrating for James Ward-Prowse’s new owners. The youngster had started all of the first three Gameweeks and with a share of set-piece duties and kindly price tag, he was acquired by an extra 57,000 new FPL owners over the two-week international break. Handed an 19-minute second-half cameo towards the end of the stalemate, Ward-Prowse could be set for an exodus if Rodriguez keeps his place.

For the visitors, the second-half introduction of Razvan Rat could be a sign that Sam Allardyce is set to alter his full-back options. The summer signing hadn’t featured in the league prior to today but was sent on just after the hour mark in a move that allowed the versatile Joey O’Brien to switch from left-back to the opposite flank and saw Guy Demel withdrawn instead – perhaps an ominous sign for the Ivorian’s owners over the weeks to come.

I have 247 points so far, ranked 120,000. The leader is on 314. How much of a gap is "too much" to make up after gameweek 4 considering the leaders most likely have exceptional teams?

I also thought this but now I feel like I'm being ignorant. There's games where goals fell but still the defenders got the BAPS. I'm upgrading my midfield for now, cause I need to pick up the risers, then I'm gonna drop 1 and upgrade my defence. I saw a team where all defenders minimum had 6 points without scoring goals.. thats insane.

I know this debate will continue, but GW4 is another week in favour of the defenders. I wildcarded and Boruc, Vidic, Zab, Coleman and Collins all got the points for me and only just missed out on BP's (except Zab who got 1).

If I sack off RVP, I can get something like Sturridge/Lukaku, upgrade JWP/Brady to Eriksen/Ozil and upgrade Chester to Vert/Evra. If you do the math, the £14m for RVP just isn't adding up.

Once CL games have passed this week I expect to take out RVP and JWP/Brady for Sturridge and Ozil. Then the week after I can I get Eriksen in for Walcott and upgrade Chester to some other bonus hound.

      All best layed plans...

to the effect off...everyone expected RVP to light up Palace at home in the same way not many are expecting big things v City away.

RVP's fixtures are v decent and if it wasnt for the indifferent start everyone would be shipping him in. Im sticking for sure.

Yeah sure, but for £14m Ronaldo was destroying teams. RVP isn't, and I've watched all United games this season and it doesn't look like it will change soon.

If I have RVP, JWP and Chester vs Lukaku, Ozil, Ferdinand as an example, who will score more points? RVP needs to be getting 9 points minimum per game I think.

      I disagree.

That would decimate your budget far too much. You can't have any sort of decent midfield (and you will need to find room for it soon, trust me!) RvP is the problem. I can't justify him with Benteke, Soldado and Sturridge on good form AND with good fixtures. The furthest I think I'll go is Rooney, Suarez, Giroud, but even that is a bit too much of a budget sink.

Of course it can be done, but at what cost?

I'd say it's not worth having a midfield of Walcott, Ben Arfa, Brady, Whittingham, Redmond...

Thing is, they've already had great fixtures and not thrashed nor looked like thrashing them. Liverpool have had STO avl, Tottenham cpl NOR plus a middling fixture of SWA. It's reliant on the assumption things will change.

    I need some advice.

    Boruc, Marshall
    Zab, Dawson, Coleman, Ward, Turner
Walcott, Hazard, Lampard, Ben Arfa, Morrison
    Sturridge, Soldado, Giroud

    1.6m in bank.

I am thinking of two options.

    1. Save transfer and do a double swap of Hazard + Soldado > Eriksen + Rooney in GW 6.
    2. Do a FT of Marshall > Mignolet and wait and see for GW 6 potentially doing the above transfers for a hit.

Basically, worth doing Marshall > Mignolet this week?

It's not the most glamourous Camzy. If you want Migs then do it and see the lie of the land next week. If you feel hit is worth it then, then do it.

I know it's not the most glamorous. The only thing that's really putting me off, is the fact that Boruc has CPL, SWA after next week, and I'd be happy having him for those two instead of splashing on Mignolet.

          Only you can prioritise.

I think all of the proposed transfers are good. It's very obvious but unless you can't get Migs due to price changes, I'd play Boruc. That said, Eriksen, with his low ownership, may rise this week.

The old early season worries 🙂

Rodgers on his deep pool of defenders:

“It’s not so much of a problem. If you’re winning games, it’s very simple.

“What we’re doing here means we will never be reliant on one player.

“The whole make-up is about the team, so that we can take one out and put one in and still be strong.

“With the likes of Sakho coming in, he hasn’t done a great deal before coming here and has worked hard the last few weeks.

“He will get the chance, like Martin Skrtel did after he hadn’t played the first few games.

“Martin got in and took his chance and that will be their job. I assess them every day in training, who is on form and who has the desire to be in the team.

“It’s a nice problem and I would rather have this problem than a lack of talent to look at. It just keeps everyone on their toes.”

    Boruc Myhill
    Collins ivanovic lescott turner toure
    Silva mirallas walcott hernandez Rmorrison
    Benteke Sturridge Soldado

What hurts is soldado not producing vs giroud. Espec. When walcott doesnt deliver! Silva injury :-/ lescott bench, and Toure uncertainty :-/ Add to that mirallas disappointment.

    Any advice?

It's a tough one...your strikers are fine, as are your keepers. Perhaps just make 2 transfers this week and 2 the next. A hit or two to get what you want is acceptable without wasting the WC.

Yeah, really tough... I mean, walcott still gets tons of chances, soldado gets his aswell.. Only real disappointment is mirallas and lescott bench role.. But at some point one must just cave, and go for options i STILL think inferior, but facts are, they are getting the points
