Our final glance at Gameweek 4 pays tribute to the latest Welshman to take north London by storm. Finds us examining just why Arsenal’s flourishing form and upcoming schedule is proving hard to ignore, while attempting to explain why Fantasy managers continue to be frustrated by a lack of attacking returns as defences remain on top.

The Player

What’s left to be said on Aaron Ramsey? In the space of four Gamweeks he’s gone from a mild-mannered mid-price filler, to a roaring Fantasy bandwagon that’s demanded our attention and immediate investment.

His returns from Saturday’s Sunderland victory have forced the hand of many, with 235,000 drafting in the Welshman as additional coverage of Arsenal’s attacking potential (more on that below). When you examine the evidence, it’s hard to deny the allure.

If you’re a member, I’d strongly advise glancing at the KPI Attacking tables for midfielders and examining the Arsenal midfield. Ramsey’s progress shown in that table, in terms of goal attempts and shots on target, is marked. Use the comparison tool to assess Ramsey’s average values this season compared to last and again, there’s clear indication that this is a player in the ascendency – we’re not just talking about a sudden upturn in Fantasy returns – Ramsey’s influence in attacking areas in terms of involvement and effectiveness looks to be on the rise.

While the indicators look positive, then, we’re only talking about a small data sample. Plus, with just four Gameweeks down, the Ramsey bandwagon has all the ingredients of early season promise that could evaporate by the time the busy Winter schedule kicks in, along with teamsheet rotation.

Even so, at just 5.8 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and with Arsenal’s fixtures providing further incentive for investment, there’s little doubt that Ramsey looks a desirable option. When a mid-price asset in a title-challenging side shows goalscoring form, you have to take notice.

The Team

We can’t look beyond Arsenal. Ramsey’s rapid ascent is just one component of the new attacking impetus on show in Arsene Wenger’s side. Olivier Giroud’s progress has also been remarkable – four goals in as many games has suddenly seen the Frenchman’s ownership soar and with an assured supply of opportunities provided by Mesut Ozil, there can be few doubts that Giroud will have every chance to continue his current spree. Confidence, supply and the fixtures are all in his favour – like Ramsey, it’s difficult to deny the credibility of this bandwagon.

Ozil continues to attract investment himself, although there is a strong argument to support the case for keeping faith with Theo Walcott. A hat-trick of opportunities came his way at the Stadium of Light and, having established himself an efficient midfield goalscorer last season, we’ve every reason to expect Walcott to ignite very soon.

With so many riches on offer and the momemtum with Arsenal, Fantasy managers have to consider just how far they go with coverage of Wenger’s attackers. With Giroud and Ramsey so convincing and Walcott a formerly trusted source of points, seemingly on the verge of returns, there are difficult decisions to be made.

One thing is certain, regardless of schedule and any improvement in Arsenal’s defensive resolve, it seems unlikely that any Fantasy manager will be turning to their back four, given how precious the option of three Arsenal attacking players looks at this moment in time.

The Talking Point

The season continues to be an extraordinary one, perhaps for all the wrong reasons. Before Monday night’s four-goal blitz in Wales, this campaign was the lowest Premier League season for goals, averaging just 1.9 per match. Last season we saw 2.8 goals per game.

It’s a bizarre trend, with little explanation offered up. There’s a feeling that teams are already fearing defeat from the off – a symptom we’ve often seen evident amongst the newly promoted each season, but now perhaps on show from those destined for mid-table or fearful of a tough nine months that may have them dally around the drop-zone.

The title contenders have also stalled. Arsenal aside, there’s little doubt that United, City and particularly Chelsea are currently stuck in second gear when it comes to attacking fluidity. Given that all three are in transition with new managers at the helm, perhaps we should have anticipated such an adjustment time. Again, are these teams looking to avoid defeat at all costs rather than opting to go for the throat with their team selection and tactics?

Tottenham and Everton – teams outside of the top four last season but associated with the potential for goals and Fantasy returns – are themselves going through change. Spurs are coming to terms with life without Gareth Bale, while Everton learning to prioritise a passing game over the blood and thunder of their previous attacking approach under David Moyes.

Maybe that’s all the explanation we need. Maybe it’s clear that it will take time for all these teams to adjust, for their heavy hitting players to emerge as a true force.

In the meantime, Fantasy managers appear well advised to look at established acts – Arsenal and Liverpool – two teams that have, in the main, been settled over the summer and who have already shown the benefit in attacking terms.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Reeeeeeeally tempted to do Coutinho--->Lamela. Like, so tempted. But I have to do Coutinho--->Eriksen. Then I'll have an extra 1m for a possible Soldado--->Rooney following week.

Think Lamela might make an impact this weekend though

Hmm I know but it's just the fact that my hands will be tied the following week if I do. I'll have 0.0 in the bank for any transfer I want to do next week if I go Lamela. Not to mention it would be a punt anyway. But I dunno, I think he'll start and do magical things.

I find it bizarre that I've read stattos saying statistically 'form' doesn't exist as they couldn't see any increase in goalscoring rate after scoring a goal in the previous game.

If that were the case, we should be getting way less points in the striker positions than we do. Most strikers would dream of scoring 1 goal every 2 games, for our striker positions that's disappointing. I call bullsh*t on that one.

              Yep.

Droughts: Torres arriving at Chelsea, Giroud last season, RVP third quarter of last season

Scoring runs: Giroud this season, HBA, Walcott before signing his contract, Bale second half last season

Is RVP going to drop this week

    Its all very annoying
I refuse to take any price drops before xmas so will be forced to sell.

Will go RVP to Sturridge then next week Sturridge to Rooneyy Thats if RVP is going to fall

The annoying thing is if he blanks against city then sales will accelerate even though he has a great fixture in GW6 , Everyone going be jumping all over Rooney.

I can see the sense in it, Rooney looks right back to his best while RVP is a more peripheral figure., plus the money saving is considerable.
However being someone who bought in RVP with wildcard it is very annoying. Was planning to save transfer ,

Don't know the full extent of it, but if you planned on keeping RVP for the long haul, then a price drop doesn't matter. It really just depends how committed you are to him. I don't think he will be priced lower by Christmas, even if he drops this week.

ENR! Help me before Eriksen Rises:

    Mirallas>Erisksen
    Lampard>Eriksen

I think I am leaning towards Lampard to Ozil, in which case I can wait. But if I want Eriksen I'd have to pull the trigger tonight. I am worried about Lampard's rotation and also that Chelsea aren't firing offensively, and I actually think Mirallas will come good.........maybe. What say you?

Against RKC Waalwijk, NEC Nijmegen, FC Groningen and VVV Venlo, yes. Stats are not erevything.. don;t get me wrong, he is a great player, one of the best in the Eredisie we've seen in 5 years, but he's not VDV or Sneijder in terms of getting goals and assists... and in this game we do not want a midfielder that assist one in two games,, do we?

Not sure if you're still following this post, and this question is coming from a place of sincere curiosity/naivete/ partial-understanding-that-may-look-presumptuous...

To what extent is your analyses potentially biased by the kind of self-doubt or self-derogation we see is teams/leagues/countries that may currently have fallen short of their golden age?

I hear English commentators all the time downplaying English players with this tinged nostalgia. We also have this implicit humility or doubt when talking about the US or MLS. Ajax used to be great, they have teams above them now in greatness... is any of that influencing your analysis?

Innocent question. I bought Eriksen recently, I was impressed ...

an easier way of asking this is: As a Dutch fan, is it en vogue to hate on the Dutch league, at least a little, and does that play into your analysis at all?

I'm skeptical of Eriksen personally. Would like to see how he gels when Lamela, Lennon and Chadli all come back.

But if you're convinced about his potential, pull the trigger on Mirallas.

Like the Ozil move a lot but Fulham at home is a good fixture for Lamps. One of his classic fixtures where he could get something out of.

      Soldado out? Don't think so.

How convinced are you about Eriksen's potential though? He needs to some goal threat to justify his price. Would rather wait to see if Lamela's the next big thing for Spurs (as many claim to be).

I'm also not sure on Michu yet. worried about Europa exhaustion.

I'm not convinced about Mirallas for the moment though. Against West Ham of all teams, do you reckon he can produce something?

I still reckon Michu is your best bet. If you don't have faith, best to save FT.

I think the Lamela Eriksen interplay will be key. Eriksen and Soldado already look like they are clicking. I think Eriksen is the missing link that Spurs needed to get decent quality ball to Soldado that has been absent till now

I brought Eriksen in on my stupidly early WC last week so I was very keen to watch the match to validate my punt
        I thought he was brilliant
Constantly hovering around the edge of the box and not afraid to dribble into it and shoot or lay off the ball. His pass completion at 90% is pretty amazing considering he recieved the ball under pressure A LOT in the attacking third.
He was constantly looking for and demanding passes. The one thing that impacted negatively on his out put was the amount of ridiculous shots that Townsend took from outside the box and on the wing. I saw Eriksen calling for the ball in excellent positions at least three times and Townsend opted for the glory speculator from a wide position 30 yards out. He is a bloddy annoying player to watch, first time I've really seen him. What is it with Spurs and selfish wingers
Eriksen is anything but selfish. I reckon he will be popular on all fronts - teamates, fans, and us fantasy freaks

    Ben Arfa / Brady / Michu / Walcott (c)
Benteke / Soldado / Giroud (vc)

    Lewis / Chester / Ward-Prowse / Vidic

Anyone thinking about getting Suarez in next week? Top 3 highest scoring forwards GW6 onwards till end of season should be RVP, Suarez and Benteke?

Sturridge and Giroud can't keep scoring forever (1 goal every game = 38 League goals??!) no matter how good they look now?

I think Sturridge could be top scorer, he's scoring strikers goals, a good variety as well. Giroud scores literally a near post tap in or header, that's his range. And he's not even scored a header this season. I think Rooney will steal the goals off rvp, he's no where near worth that price. Maybe 12 now, or 11.5. I'm sticking with Sturridge i think. He's still not fully fit, but looks agile and alert. He seems to score against any team at any ground.

Hah, yeah. I only have Zabaleta though. Both scored a few as well and suddenly appear to have clicked. It'll be about as fun as the United vs Chelsea game. I think Rooney will score, because he's fluky like that.

    GW1 Hazard (c)
    GW2 Benteke (c)
GW3 Rooney, Dzeko, Mulumbu in for Weimann, Lukaku, Hazard (-4)
GW4 Soldado and Welbeck in for Rooney and Dzeko (-4)
Today -- Rooney brace, taunting me to sign his head cast
Tonight -- WC with no clue who I even want in my team.

But of all the failures in a shocking opening month, selecting and keeping Coutinho over Sturridge is the biggest failure of them all for me. As soon as the prices came out this summer I posted that it was too bad that Coutinho was priced so high since I liked him but for 7.0 and 7.5.

700K ranking, only way to go is up:
    Boruc
    Coleman JE Zab Fonte Chester
    Theo Lampard HBA Sess Barkley

my suggest on your prior page query

    Snoddy to Mirallas
    or
    hold the FT

i say as a HBA owner and non-believer

think Mirallas & Lukaku will be good for each other

however FT is probably most valuable based on current transfer insanity and reckless abandwagonment

The 0.2 swing in price tonight did it for me. Having to suffer Kim/Murner drops too.

Usually never do early transfers, but it feels ok. I could still get Mirallas by transferring Lamps out when need be. Just waiting for some sign from Mirallas and I'm hopping onboard (as he's another confidence player)

FT would have been useful next week but missing out on Giroud has scarred me.

Also feel like I haven't lost my flexibility. Next week, could either do Soldado > Rooney or Lamps > Michu / Mirallas or get Wilson for Murner.

    Wisdom, Turner, Terry, Toure
    Walcott, Michu, Snodgrass
    Giroud (C), RVP, Soldado

    Boruc, Kim, JWP, Chester

The theory is that one (or maybe even both of) Toure and Wisdom will play. Kim off the bench if they don't. Chester is also decent back up (especially for home fixtues).

    Michu - Paulinho - Lampard - HBA - (Colback)

I got him in when Rooney was not even expected to play let alone a threat. If I'd known that I wouldn't have bothered. So no I don't believe in #TeamRVP now.

Surely, surely, the WC is worth more in a spring DGW.

It is if you believe you can save it up till then. have to stress "takes a lot of determination"

if not, might be worth the trigger.

Really rough ballpark, how much do you think it is worth? Did you save for it last season?

I regret using it up after gw4 last year.

Seems to vary though. Last year's DGW36 WC was worth about 25-30 points over FFS average (based on CF, GWM, EpicFail, etc). Two years back it was worth >50 points.

Think it might be worth me using it now then. Not enough payoff for the losses suffered not sorting my team out.

                      RVP or no RVP?

That is the big question. If no RVP, I think WC is a good option personally.

i wildcarded last week and couldn't decide tween lamela and eriksen so i got both. lamela didn't feature a whole bunch so i done already shipped him out for barfa. oh yeah. there was a point to this. do not as i have. lamela will be all kinds of awesome i'm certain. following my lead is a guaranteed recipe for self-ingestion

Why are people freaking out about losing a .1 on RvP?

Surely if you brought him in itsas a season keeper so why does it matter.

He might have been brought in as a season keeper at the time.

Yep, when Rooney was so far off the radar he was seen as struggling to make the derby let alone make an impression. He's a huge part of the RVP calculation and has well and truly mullered it.
