Our final glance at Gameweek 4 pays tribute to the latest Welshman to take north London by storm. Finds us examining just why Arsenal’s flourishing form and upcoming schedule is proving hard to ignore, while attempting to explain why Fantasy managers continue to be frustrated by a lack of attacking returns as defences remain on top.

The Player

What’s left to be said on Aaron Ramsey? In the space of four Gamweeks he’s gone from a mild-mannered mid-price filler, to a roaring Fantasy bandwagon that’s demanded our attention and immediate investment.

His returns from Saturday’s Sunderland victory have forced the hand of many, with 235,000 drafting in the Welshman as additional coverage of Arsenal’s attacking potential (more on that below). When you examine the evidence, it’s hard to deny the allure.

If you’re a member, I’d strongly advise glancing at the KPI Attacking tables for midfielders and examining the Arsenal midfield. Ramsey’s progress shown in that table, in terms of goal attempts and shots on target, is marked. Use the comparison tool to assess Ramsey’s average values this season compared to last and again, there’s clear indication that this is a player in the ascendency – we’re not just talking about a sudden upturn in Fantasy returns – Ramsey’s influence in attacking areas in terms of involvement and effectiveness looks to be on the rise.

While the indicators look positive, then, we’re only talking about a small data sample. Plus, with just four Gameweeks down, the Ramsey bandwagon has all the ingredients of early season promise that could evaporate by the time the busy Winter schedule kicks in, along with teamsheet rotation.

Even so, at just 5.8 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and with Arsenal’s fixtures providing further incentive for investment, there’s little doubt that Ramsey looks a desirable option. When a mid-price asset in a title-challenging side shows goalscoring form, you have to take notice.

The Team

We can’t look beyond Arsenal. Ramsey’s rapid ascent is just one component of the new attacking impetus on show in Arsene Wenger’s side. Olivier Giroud’s progress has also been remarkable – four goals in as many games has suddenly seen the Frenchman’s ownership soar and with an assured supply of opportunities provided by Mesut Ozil, there can be few doubts that Giroud will have every chance to continue his current spree. Confidence, supply and the fixtures are all in his favour – like Ramsey, it’s difficult to deny the credibility of this bandwagon.

Ozil continues to attract investment himself, although there is a strong argument to support the case for keeping faith with Theo Walcott. A hat-trick of opportunities came his way at the Stadium of Light and, having established himself an efficient midfield goalscorer last season, we’ve every reason to expect Walcott to ignite very soon.

With so many riches on offer and the momemtum with Arsenal, Fantasy managers have to consider just how far they go with coverage of Wenger’s attackers. With Giroud and Ramsey so convincing and Walcott a formerly trusted source of points, seemingly on the verge of returns, there are difficult decisions to be made.

One thing is certain, regardless of schedule and any improvement in Arsenal’s defensive resolve, it seems unlikely that any Fantasy manager will be turning to their back four, given how precious the option of three Arsenal attacking players looks at this moment in time.

The Talking Point

The season continues to be an extraordinary one, perhaps for all the wrong reasons. Before Monday night’s four-goal blitz in Wales, this campaign was the lowest Premier League season for goals, averaging just 1.9 per match. Last season we saw 2.8 goals per game.

It’s a bizarre trend, with little explanation offered up. There’s a feeling that teams are already fearing defeat from the off – a symptom we’ve often seen evident amongst the newly promoted each season, but now perhaps on show from those destined for mid-table or fearful of a tough nine months that may have them dally around the drop-zone.

The title contenders have also stalled. Arsenal aside, there’s little doubt that United, City and particularly Chelsea are currently stuck in second gear when it comes to attacking fluidity. Given that all three are in transition with new managers at the helm, perhaps we should have anticipated such an adjustment time. Again, are these teams looking to avoid defeat at all costs rather than opting to go for the throat with their team selection and tactics?

Tottenham and Everton – teams outside of the top four last season but associated with the potential for goals and Fantasy returns – are themselves going through change. Spurs are coming to terms with life without Gareth Bale, while Everton learning to prioritise a passing game over the blood and thunder of their previous attacking approach under David Moyes.

Maybe that’s all the explanation we need. Maybe it’s clear that it will take time for all these teams to adjust, for their heavy hitting players to emerge as a true force.

In the meantime, Fantasy managers appear well advised to look at established acts – Arsenal and Liverpool – two teams that have, in the main, been settled over the summer and who have already shown the benefit in attacking terms.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What should I do for this week? Thinking of just sitting on the FT...

    Migs (Lewis)
    Vidic, Zaba, Walker (Chester, Reither)
    Walcott, Brady, Lamela, Lampard (Whittingham)
    Sturridge, Benteke, Giroud

    0 in the bank.

    Thoughts fellas?

The only thing I can think of would be to do Zabaleta to Terry.

I wouldn't want to put Vidic and Zabaleta in with the derby. And Chelsea have a better run of games than City.

Thanks, yeah I was thinking that too. I could download Lamela but I feel like once I do, he will come in and get in the goals. Or should I just not take the chance and move him on for HBA or someone else?

Thanks man, I'm going to wait until after the Champions League match tomorrow to see how Chelsea lineup and then make my move. I've been contemplating Zaba-Terry all week and I think it's a solid move, esp. as I have Benteke and I don't want him cancelling out Zaba's points next GW.

Agger had some strange gym accident, overstretching while trying to dodge a dumbbell from landing on his foot, somewhat doubtful for Sat.

Giroud has a thing with his knee from the weekend, but said on twitter that not to worry. I'd bet on him starting.

So Agger won't be playing? That's messed my plans right up! I had £2m spare after my wildcard, because I planned to do Ben Arfa to Michu for GW7, and because I didn't need the money I upgraded a £4m defender to Agger to cover Vidic against City and Walker against Tottenham!

Rodgers words: “He has overstretched and yanked his side. We are waiting to see if that settles down over the next few days. If it doesn’t, we have got ample replacements. That is why we brought in extra players.”

I'd wait until Friday and see what happens.

Currently I'm going with Benteke as captain, the main reason being the Stoke defence, I believe Arsenal will score it just might not be Giroud, where as Benteke is almost a guarentee for a goal. Also I don't quite trust Soldado to score in open play yet.

The dynamic between RVP and Rooney has changed this season. Last year was their first together and Rooney was often played in a deeper midfield position. This year Moyes has stated they will be playing up front together which is optimum IMO. Rooney will be amongst the points regularly this season as an AM/CF just in behind RVP so for this reason I believe he won't be too far behind RVP when it comes to FPL points.

I agree, but despite what Moyes says in the press Rooney will always naturally drop deeper than RVP. As things stand, Rooney seems the better value, but RVP's advanced position and set pieces shouldn't be underestimated imo, e.g. he scored 6 goals and got several (not sure how many) assists from set pieces last season.

RVP(c) just offers that bit more comfort.

Yes Rooney will drop deeper from a forward position to get the ball. He has always done that though even the season before RVP arrived. It doesn't stop him from scoring points. The main thing though is that he won't be playing as a CM anymore, Fellaini solves that issue thankfully.

I remember someone doing some analysis on the points difference between Rooney and RVP when being played up front together, it was very even.

          not strictly true.

Last night saw plenty of times when RvP dropped deeper than Rooney. Also, RvP and Rooney split set-pieces, RvP from the right., Rooney from the left.

Played WC. Probably a stupid thing to do.

    Going from

    Boruc 4.0
    Zab Coleman Toure Collins Brayford
    Walcott Hazard Pablo Coutinho Ravel
    Sturridge Benteke Soldado

    to

    Migno 4.0
    Zab Coleman Walker Clyne Wilson
Walcott Michu Eriksen Barkley 4.5m (Jedinak?)
    Sturridge Benteke Giroud.

    Any glaring mistakes?
The WC was kneejerky but was much needed with bad form premium (Haz and Cout), injuries (Pablo and Toure) and non playing bench (Ravel and Brayford)

Twas the right thing to do...right?

    ok * LONG POST ALERT*

Based on last night's game I have a few things in my head that I think will be of help to people in regards to United.

    a) Overall team play - Best we have played for a while and we actually looked threatening if we can sort out our final ball. Only main problem was often we took too long to recycle possession in defence and this allowed Leverkusen to get 10 men behind the ball.

    b) Defensive options. Money no object Evra remains the best bet and Rio the best budget option. However, my advice is, monitor the press conferences for news on Rafael. I don't think enough has been made of how much we miss him, he is our only natural rb and offers something that Smalling and Jones, as hard as they try, just don't.

    c) Kagawa. Interesting performance, he was basically a lw inside forward, plenty of license to come inside. Plenty of neat touches and turns in the first halk, but not up to speed so many things he tried just didn't come off as he's rusty. Definitely better than Young and Welbeck, but not yet able to go 90 mins. Monitoring.

    d) Rooney v RvP Once Europa is over I will be selling RvP and getting Rooney. All the things (bar penos) that made RvP a nailed on (c) choice and thus worth 14.0 have gone. Rooney is more involved overall, and under the new BPs system this is heavily rewarded, whereas last season it wasn't. They will score roughly equally over the season and Rooney is 3,5 cheaper. He's looking in good shape and is more selfish than last season, and actually more selfish than RvP. Simply put RvP no longer offers the same surety as he once did. I am off the train.

    e) Give me a differential - Ok, since you asked so nicely. Valencia - Started to look more like the Valencia of old last night,Some decent balls in, but still not quite there.

      Good summary.

I'll be getting one of the MUN defenders if Kolo's role is confirmed as being a squad player.

Regarding Rooney vs RVP. I've been planning on RVP for ages, and now I am genuinely torn. Rooney is more involved and is clearly the better value, but despite his relatively modest returns (3 goals in 4 games isn't that bad) this season, he still has a far superior goal threat to Rooney, and the set pieces will probably add 5-8 goals and some assists to his tally this year.

      It's a tricky one.

RvP does not have exclusivity on set-pieces, he takes from the right, Rooney from the left. We had a free-kick in a central position last night and Rooney took it.

I'm not sure that I agree with that last point.

Fair point on the set pieces actually, but pens will still get around 5 goals per season.

            just the bit on set-pieces

yeah pens is obviously in RvP's favour, but worth 3.5 more?

Yeah, probably not if everything else was completely equal (which I don't think it is).

I think RVP will outscore Rooney this year, but it may not be by that much. Everyone in my ML has RVP so it would be a huge gamble to go without and get Rooney instead. It's very tempting though, with the upgrades that can be made elsewhere.

I'd argue that Rooney is much more likely to get assists than RVP. This is another good aspect to Rooney's game.

      nice summary.

Watched the game as well and Evra definitely the best bet for attacking returns. But between Vidic and Rio, I would still go Vidic. Rio while cheaper is so mistake prone and more likely to be rotated. Plus Vidic has greater threat at corners.

RVP owner here and got him in for the good run of fixtures after City - but Rooney's performance is definitely tempting. He simply refuses to pass to RVP now. Will be holding RVP for City definitely, but a swap to Rooney is a real option thereafter.

Just want 2 FTs if i ship RVP out so i can make a straight upgrade somewhere else.

Yea the only gripe I have about rvp is how he seems to disappear against strong defenses. And he's recently adopted some sort of strop as well.

Rooney's definitely got the fire at the moment and my knees are jerky...

Would you ship rvp out for Rooney and say Michu/eriksen in for Hernandez for a hit this week?

Yeah I'm looking forward to when Rafael returns, he will be straight in my team once he has completed a 90 minute game.

I agree with you on the RVP Rooney debate, it will be a lot closer between those two this season. I suspect RVP will still edge it in his slightly more advanced role but the price difference is the biggest factor in favour of Rooney.

I don't think Valencia will ever be an option this season unless he finds some crazy form, I still believe Nani will replace him at some point. Kagawa also is worth monitoring but I don't think he will be that effective on the wing and Rooney stands in the way of a central role.

56 players fell last night and only 7 were rising. How is that possible?

Most of the teams got their team value dramatically shaved over one night.

Even if the stop in the number system from the day before had to be regained, it seems impossible that a so large number of players as 56 should fall in one or even two days.

And who did people buy to replace all the players that seems to be sold?

Seems very unlogical and hope FPL will correct this error.
