Having failed to score in Arsenal’s first four fixtures, Theo Walcott’s start to the season has been a major disappointment. While Olivier Giroud racks up the goals, the Gunners winger has yet to get off the mark and with Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey offering alternatives across the price points in the Fantasy games, Walcott’s case for inclusion in our five-man midfields hasn’t exactly been a convincing one.

With Arsene Wenger’s side primed for a superb run of fixtures which sees them face just two of last term’s top six in the next 10 Gameweeks, investment in Arsenal’s main assets seems a sensible tactic. Bearing this in mind, in this latest members article, we delve into the data and assess Walcott’s displays for the season in comparison to the previous campaign.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

On the plus side for Mark & co., having read the article as a non-member, i'd certainly to be more for becoming a member after seeing it. Great stuff.

(Not this season as there's a good chance I won't be able to pay as much attention after January but in season's to come for sure!)

Ok, apologies for going over tired old ground but I've been playing around with some numbers to satisfy my own curiosity so I'll throw them out here in case anyone still has an appetite for this.

Basically I've gone through each match played this season and taken a look at the bonus points which have been awarded under the new BPS system and compared them against the bonus points which would have been awarded under the previous PPI system. (Sorry if this has been done but I haven't seen this specific analysis)

As has been well documented the new system punishes midfielders in favour of defenders.

    Bonus points actually awarded (BPS)
    GK - 15
    DEF - 144
    MID - 71
    FWD - 67
    Total - 297

Bonus which would have been given under PPI
    GK - 2
    DEF - 53
    MID - 139
    FWD - 69
    Total - 263

I've also looked at which individual players have been most affected so far and have done one of those nifty Tableau graphs that The 3rd Turd introduced us all to.

    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/BPSvsPPI/PPIvsBPS?:embed=y&:display_count=no

The larger the dot, the more players in that data point.

Those data points which are green mean the players have benefited from the new system (Giroud, Baines, Coloccini, etc.)

Those data points which are red mean the players have suffered from the new system (Sturridge, Adam, Walcott, etc.)

As is usually the case, the graph can be filtered to show particular positions/players as you see fit.

No revelations here but I think it helps to illustrate that even though a lot of this season's defender bonus points can be attributed to the unusually high levels of clean sheets, the new system is definitely playing a large part too.

      No need to apologise!

Nice though it is to be credited with introducing Tableau to the FPL masses, I think that particular credit has to go to Mr Glover.

You may be interested in seeing a similar BPS/PPI analysis I've done, which breaks down the gain/loss in baps by match score:

Arsenal home matches: 14 shots in the box (12th best)

Arsenal away matches: 24 shots in the box (Top score)

Stoke at home next, a team on form and held City to 0 goals.

Arsenal may score, but it's unlikely to be many.

That statistic is misleading. They lost to Villa 3-1 on the opening day in their first home match, and beat Spurs 1-0 in their other home match.

Their 2 away matches were 3-1 victories against Fulham and Sunderland; of course their shots would be higher.
