Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez make light work of struggling Sunderland, as Brendan Rodgers’ decision to continue with a 3-5-2 formation allows the Reds’ duo the chance to shine:

The Game Changer

A goal and a pair of assists took Daniel Sturridge to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings this evening as Liverpool eased to victory in Sunderland’s first league match since the dismissal of Paolo Di Canio.

While the spotlight was on Luis Suarez, his Liverpool team-mate was amongst the points yet again as Sturridge atoned for a rare blank against Southampton last weekend with another handful of Fantasy points. Some were wary that Suarez’ return would diminish Sturridge’s potential but the former Chelsea man showed great awareness to tee up both the Uruguayan’s goals as Liverpool climbed to second.

Priced at 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Sturridge – along with Suarez – is set for significant investment over the next few days as the Merseysiders prepare for a home clash with Palace next weekend. While many of the other title contenders now have European commitments to contend with this week, Liverpool can now rest up until the Eagles come calling next Saturday afternoon; a factor that will surely benefit Sturridge as he looks to continue a record that has seen him score in five of the opening six Gameweeks.

The Underused

There was no real surprise that Luis Suarez stole the show on his return to league action earlier today. We handed the Uruguayan the headline act in this week’s Spot the Differential article and he duly delivered with a brace as Liverpool, somewhat significantly, scored more than two goals for the first time this term.

In a season that has mainly proved frustrating for Fantasy managers, Suarez’ instant impact served a reminder of the potential that harvested 23 goals and 10 assists last time round. While fellow big hitters such as Robin Van Persie and Sergio Aguero were protected ahead of Champions League duties, Suarez will benefit from a schedule which has also been lightened by Liverpool’s Capital One Cup exit in midweek – game time looks guaranteed, with rest and rotation unnecessary for Rodgers.

Currently sitting at 10.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with an ownership of just 7%, the bandwagon is set to shift through the gears as Fantasy managers look to find a way to bring Suarez on board as the Reds gear up for a favourable run of fixtures over the next few matches. Indeed, with Palace, Newcastle, West Brom and Fulham in the next five, doubling up on Liverpool’s front two looks a viable tactic for the next few Gameweeks.

The Selection Poser

Brendan Rodgers once again rolled out a 3-5-2 formation for the Merseysiders, continuing with the shape utilised in the midweek Capital One Cup clash against United. With Glen Johnson still injured, Rodgers clearly remains unconvinced over his alternatives at right-back and with a number of centre-halves at his disposal, looks set to retain a three-man backline until Johnson returns to the fold.

This will allow Jose Enrique to continue on the left of the Reds’ five-man midfield, affording the Spaniard an out of position berth for the time being – an injury update issued last week suggested Johnson could be back in a “couple of weeks”, though. Also, the new formation also allows Rodgers to court caution with Daniel Agger after recent injury but with Kolo Toure, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho all playing today, it remains to be seen just who will get the nod as Agger’s central defensive partner once the Merseysiders are finally injury-free. Enrique’s shift into midfield also allowed Victor Moses a central position behind Sturridge and Suarez though the on-loan midfielder failed to impress in his new role in “the hole”.

In the earlier game, Nathan Redmond missed out through injury for Norwich at Stoke. Having started each of the first five, the former Birmingham man was replaced by Anthony Pilkington at the Britannia and with the latter providing the assist for Jonny Howson’s winner, Chris Hughton has plenty to ponder ahead of next week’s clash against Chelsea, with Redmond’s 4% FPL owners hoping he can force his way back into contention.

          if you want to

do you really want to waste an FT chasing points between premium defenders? or do you want to hold the ones you have until they score a goal, and you can transfer them out for a profit to another one that hasn't yet?

I'd lose Vidic for JE if you can find the extra .2. Terry is the best Def from CHE, but you may still give Ivan a chance. I'd keep Zaba for his attacking threat.

        Rooney and Sturridge.
The key imo is to get in early and get out on time. I reckon now is the time to sell Giroud. He's really not a very good finisher and his hold up play benefits the mids more than himself in fpl terms. Wally is the one to get from arsenal imo

Anyone else have 3 Arsenal attackers right now? How are you planning to move forward, keeping all 3 or downgrading to 2?

I have Ozil, Ramsey and Giroud right now, but plan to lose one... but I think I need another week to decide which two to keep... which is fine because the next 3 fixtures are very decent...

WBA have only conceded 5 goals so far, but they have conceded 3 at home against opposition who like to play, so I think there will be enough goals to warrant having 3 for that game...

Then they have some very favourable ties in NOR cpl... and I see the goals continuing to flow here...

That should give me enough information to make the right switch just in time for 2 difficult games in GW10-11...

Pretty set on keeping Ramsey, just for his relative value... so I reckon it'll be one of the other two...

Looking at Chelsea's fixtures GW10 onwards, Ozil > Mata looks like it might be profitable if Mata can play himself into the team by then... not many other big hitting options tbh with the fixtures to match, so might just be the form player...

If Benteke is back by then, maybe a switch back to him would be the natural replacement for Giroud...

Anyway, that is just my thought process for this decision, would be interested to find out anyone else's line of thought on this ...

      I'm not fully convinced Özil's a long-term option.

Got him since his past track record suggested he was going to be explosive in his first few weeks at a new club. Will keep him nevertheless until a premium mid steps up....the timing should just fit nice with Walc returning and Chelsea's fixtures improving meaning Mata/Oscar may be worth a shot.

Yes, I agree that Oscar/Mata/Hazard would be a natural replacement for him given those fixtures... an amazing run of games from GW10-21... only really Arsenal away and Liverpool at home which looks to cause any problems for them...

Will probably get Terry as well as a midfielder for that run...

        really?

I am, and I don't own him. He is the ideal midfielder for this BAPs system.

so Ramsey outscored him this week, kerpiffle happens

he's still THE guy running the show at an explosive attacking team perfect for his style

His BPS potential is brilliant indeed but not convinced he'll be the main creative force once Walc and Caz are back. So even the assists may be shared. Also needs to show some goal threat or hog more set pieces (preferably pens) for him to be worth that enormous price. I'm expecting a couple of premium mid options to step up in the next few weeksfor sure, so will need the funds to afford them and a quality strike force. Still rate Özil as the best midfielder in the league though, just needs to show more for him to be considered a long term FPL option.

Having said all that, here's hoping he proves me wrong next week by nabbing a double digit score 😆

I think this is highly likely to happen at some point... but I will give him a little longer since he costs relatively little and I could feasibly have him as a decent first sub should he begin to blank more often that not... and wait for the right time to offload him when there were no other pressing issues (which never seems to be the case)...

I definitely prefer Walcott, but I'll have to wait for him to get right, form wise...

For what it's worth, I had this dilemma after WC last week. I brought in Ozil, Ramsey and Giroud and thought I would ride them for 2-3 weeks. But after watching them last week I opted to drop Giroud this week for Lukaku. I will be keeping Ozil (consistency of assists and involvement) AND Ramsey (for his price/value) for the near term.

Yes, I WCed this week and came so close to switching Sturridge/Giroud to Suarez/Lukaku, but for a few different reasons decided against it...

With a lot of great striking options, Giroud is my favourite for the chop right now... but he has some good games to get back on a scoring run, I think a small period of patience masked as inactivity on the transfer front might pay dividends here...

Ozil and Giroud owner here (WCed last week).

Good move to stick with the 3 you have right now. Ramsey is proving too good for his value (disappointed that i didn't get him with the WC 🙁 ), unless he's slowing down (if players like Santi, Wilshere, or Arteta start to steal his thunder - big if there), i see no point to lose him.

Ozil is the enigma here - we don't know if he's overpriced or simply justified. If Mata continues his form and finally land a starting berth, a straight swap look like a no brainer for you. Otoh, we should monitor the progress of Walcott & Giroud. If the former can return to his prolific form of last season after this injury, get him instead. I am worry that Giroud can be burned out this year, so the striker can be replaced by a fit-again Benteke or Negredo if anything happens.

      Just my two cents.

You should be chasing all the price rises this week and sort out your team Friday, FYI

Collins didn't start - get him out

would rather ben turner than rosenoir

Siggy is not nailed on yet, but sexy, you may just be chasing points

Yaya always starts strong (though stronger this year), don't expect the returns to continue

Remy is flair. Think he'll get about 14 goals if he stays healthy (in other words, he's got about another 12 in him) - is that what you want? or do you want to go for Lukaku?

Sound points. I usually don't like going point chasing (which is why I am not getting Suarez), but usually two weeks are a good indication if the third is a bust, but all of Yaya, Ramsey and Brady (who is my one carryover from the old team) have kept up. I bought in Suarez for RVP this week. I'd like some Terry and Baines moving forward.

you'll want to go HBA to Mirallas soon, but no one believes me

got yelled at some pages back that Mirallas hasn't done anything this season

of course, I'm of the odd ilk that tries to buy players that are going to score more points as opposed to just buying players who scored points before you owned them - probably a reckless idea

Wish I had Terry in my team... but I WCed in Evra, so I stubbornly refuse to accept that I was wrong to do that... so as a result, I will hold him for the next 4 games and hope United get 4 CS and Evra gets a goal, a couple of assists and 5 BPs to boot... 😉

well not every week, but most weeks I think so, unless Mids suddenly start scoring well again I prefer a cheap mid and a strong defense and rotate the 4th and 5th def with 4th and 5th mid, resulting in some 3 4 3s and some 5 2 3s
