Romelu Lukaku bullies Newcastle into submission with a brace and assist on his first league start for Everton. Ross Barkley continues his eye-catching season with another strike, while Alan Pardew drops Papiss Cisse and hauls off Hatem Ben Arfa at the break as his side suffer a second successive defeat:

Lukaku Runs Riot
Having emerged from the bench to notch the winner against West Ham last weekend, the on-loan forward was handed his first start by Roberto Martinez last night. Lukaku’s impact was instant as the Merseysiders extended their unbeaten run – with just five minutes on the clock he had beaten Tim Krul between the sticks for Newcastle before adding another goal and assist to signal his intent for the season.

Frozen out by Jose Mourinho at Chelsea in spite of his scoring exploits on loan at West Brom, Lukaku’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price plummeted but the big Belgian has wasted no time in highlighting his worth as a Fantasy asset – fed by the creativity of the likes of Kevin Mirallas and Leighton Baines, he looks poised to plunder the goals once again this term and has already earned 23 FPL points in one-and-a-half matches for the Merseysiders. While Steve Clarke tended to utilise him from the bench on a number of occasions at West Brom, Lukaku looks far more likely to start under Martinez and has quickly replaced the misfiring Nikica Jelavic as the Toffees main forward – after the game, the Everton boss was understandably full of praise for his season-long acquisition:

“Romelu’s a young man that has everything as a striker. Sometimes you see a number nine that is powerful and has great physical presence – I think what Romelu also brings is a great technical awareness of what’s around him. He’s really gifted in holding up play with his back to goal. That was our focal point today, but that understanding with Ross Barkley was magic at times. He’s a great goalscorer and the reception that he had at Goodison made him a player that looked at home. I want him to enjoy his football, to develop and to become as good as he can be…At times he was unplayable and that that means he opened spaces for others. We need to get to know him. In the second half against West Ham he showed what he could do and tonight he looked at home.”

Barkley In the Points Again
While the Everton defence failed to keep a home clean sheet for the first time since March, their cut-price midfielder was in the points yet again last night. We’d highlighted Barkley in last week’s members Versus article and suggested that, despite his impressive statistics, there was an argument he had been slightly underperforming – last night he stepped up a level and grabbed his first goal since the season opener at Norwich.

In a campaign that has so far been blighted by the downfall of virtually every premium midfield bar Yaya Toure, Barkley continues to defy the doubters and although his ownership is now 30% in FPL, a price tag of 5.3 will surely prove irresistible to many non-owners over the next few days. Everton’s midweek cup exit, while undoubtedly disappointing for Toffees fans, looks likely to diminish any chance of rest and rotation amongst Martinez’ charges – given his present form, it’s a fair assumption to say that Barkley’s starts in the role in “the hole†look pretty much assured.

Barkley’s improvement was singled out by his manager after the final whistle:

“It’s hard to explain how much he’s growing game by game. In pre-season he impressed and from that onwards he is getting better. He’s a unique talent for an English boy. He has developed a good relationship with Romelu straight away. He’s growing so much that if anything you need to take him away from the training ground as he’s so eager to fulfil his potential.”

Mirallas Ankle Worry
The Belgian picked up an assist for the second successive Gameweek as his slow start to the season finally comes alive. After teeing up Lukaku for the winner against West Ham, Mirallas was quick off the mark and provided his compatriot with a killer pass to slot home the opener against the Magpies. Mirallas’ owners will be somewhat concerned after he was withdrawn midway through the second-half due to injury, though – with plenty of options on the right, including Gerard Deulofeu, Steven Naismith, Arouna Kone and Leon Osman, Martinez will be keen to court caution with the wideman and would only say:

“Kevin had a knock 25 minutes into the game. He twisted his ankle slightly so we’ll have to assess him.””

Pardew Tinkers with Frontline Options
Loic Remy was another on-loan forward to make his mark at Goodison last night. The Frenchman’s brace against Hull in the previous Gameweek persuaded Alan Pardew to drop the out-of-sorts Papiss Cisse and move him to the middle, with Yoan Gouffran drafted in for a role on the flank. Remy’s strike certainly vindicated his manager’s decision to leave Cisse out of the first XI, while Gouffran could be set to retain his role out wide after chipping in with an assist.

While the Cisse omission perhaps raised one or two eyebrows, Pardew’s decision to haul off Hatem Ben Arfa at the break was a real surprise. The Newcastle boss failed to mention any injury after the match, and indirectly hinted the change was down to a lack of first-half fight – after a brief couple of impressive displays, Ben Arfa has quickly lost his form and, currently sitting in 22% of FPL teams, could be set for an exodus with Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs in the next five.

Pardew was, however, a little more vocal on the chances of Yohan Cabaye. The midfielder sustained a groin injury in the Hull loss and was only fit for a bench role – replacing Ben Arfa at half-time, he scored a stunning long-range effort to nail down a starting role for the weekend clash against Cardiff, according to his manager:

“He’s a class act. We had a long chat, me and him, yesterday about him starting and we both felt he wasn’t quite right for 90 minutes. He was terrific in the second half and he hasn’t had any problems coming off, so he’s an absolute banker for Cardiff. That’s what I’m looking at. We need that sort of performance, that kind of 90 minutes he gives me with the quality….We’ve got to get the right balance and that’s what we’re searching for. That’s not just us, a lot of sides in the Premier League are searching for that right balance in the team. For me, I think it’s important that we get a team out against Cardiff that has the right balance to it.”

Magpies Defending Slammed
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was also taken off a half-time after the visitors went in 3-0 down at the break. The centre-half has been targeted by Fantasy managers due to his budget pricing but, unable to contain Lukaku’s pace and power, he was replaced by Mike Williamson. A much-improved Magpies kept Everton at bay in the second period, with Pardew highly critical of a defence that has now conceded 11 goals – the second worst backline in the top-flight.

“We had more or less the same players in the second half, but for two changes at half-time. There was a change of attitude. There was a tackle won, a header won and it makes all the difference. Then suddenly we’re back in it. Really and truly, all we had to play for was pride in the end. Those goals in the first half, I’m sorry – we can’t defend like that. There have been a few signs of conceding goals, and we have to tighten up. Our goals against doesn’t look good. We need to tighten that defensive side of things.”

I really don't like these constant comments about sheep mentality. The fixture lists are the same for all of us, there is a finite number of players to choose from, and a smaller number of form players.

Being a maverick just for the sake of it doesn't work. Everyone here is a 'sheep' to some extent.

Doesn't bother me, I personally pick my own team regardless of what others do, the info re players is out there, games arethere to be viewed. If a persons energies are focused on such things, then they ain't fully focused on the most important thing, your own team!

Does the transfer sell-on policy need changing?

The rise of the budget mid-fielders and in particular a free-scoring, Welsh wizard from North London [not Cristiano's new best friend] and their relevant rapid price rises has got me thinking about the transfer sell-on policy system. It it fair?

            The example..

John Smith and his team 'Arsenal All-stars' had an incredible dream pre-GW2 that a previously injured, wayward shot player, named Aaron Ramsey would suddenly transform himself to go onto a scoring-spree, deciding to take the decision of buying him for 5.5m. Mr Smith was delighted the following week when he along with the other 10,000 deluded owners witnessed the start of a miracle as Ramsey buried two against Di Canio's less-than-happy troopers.

            [GW4, 5, and 6 passes...]

Meanwhile Jack Trotter and his team 'Bandwagon Bandits' watched in disbelief as his mini-league dreams once more quickly disappearing down the drain, quicker than Di Canio's 20-page employment contract. He thought to himself, 'I can't hold-back any longer, I have to bring in Ramsey'. So Mr Trotter brings in Aaron Ramsey for £6.4m.

[Ramsey continues to score in GW7 and 8, rising to £6,6m, before another long-term injury]

Here comes the exodus...As Brady's, Barkley's, and Park Chu Young's are brought in to replace Aaron Ramsey, what happens to a crucial factor than comes into play post-January..Team Value?

Jack Trotter, who refused to take the gamble and join the bandwagon early, sells Ramsey for £6,5m and is able to bring in the now-on-fire Park Chu Young. John Smith, who unfortunately hadn't had any more epiphanies since bringing in Aaron Ramsey way-back when, has to sell Ramsey for £6.0m but now can't quite afford the 'Pride of Korea', priced at £6.1m.

Park Chu Young finishes the season with 35 goals and Jack Trotter and his team of Bandwagon Bandits enjoy taking the crisp, office, tenner from beneath the hands of Mr John Smith and his no-longer Arsenal All-stars..

Is the current transfer-sell on value policy right?

Mark has a similar view. In the end you get all the point from that player over someone getting on the wagon late. If they changed the rules, team values would be crazy.

Yeah there was an 'Opinion' article a while back if I remember rightly. I think the consensus was that it was ok as it is and the person jumping on the bandwagon early isn't penalised, as it seems without closer inspection.

One thing that those that don't have Ramsey can cling to is that, if he does suffer a dry spell, it's likely that a lot of his owners will sit and wait and hope to ride it out because of the loss associated with selling on and the risk of not being able to afford him back.

The same applies should he suffer an injury - pick up a knock that turns into two or three weeks out and it will be interesting to see if his owners hold. Those who buy him today, will feel more freedom to sell. Those who bought him two weeks ago, will be more hesitant due to the 0.3 loss. Those without Ramsey may therefore be able to move more quickly for the next bandwagon and exploit it.

It may sound like straw clutching but I saw this myself with Florent Malouda a couple of seasons back - remember his start? I also remember his ten or so games that followed without any returns during which I was petrified of selling due to the 0.7 loss I'd suffer and the fear I'd want him back. That cost me dear because I watched other profitable players go by while I clung to Malouda.

I'm not saying all will be as gutless as me but, if Ramsey does dip in returns, his rapid escalation in price could suddenly become a negative for those who own him.

Like Hooperman says, I personally feel this is all a little unfair. If you've got on Ramsey, you should have his points without also suffering from the urge not to sell on due to the huge loss and difficulty buying back.

I'm not sure on a solution but I'd like, at least, for some ideas to be explored. Perhaps the ability to lock one or two players so you can buy back at the price you sold or perhaps even have emergency loans which allows for the same mechanic.

Let's just wait to see if Ramsey does suffer a lull (I'm pretty sure he will) and then I'm sure we'll see a lot of "Should I sell? what if I want him back?".

I think this is kind of a psyhological thing mark, the same thing that causes knee-jerkyness! Or the same thing that had me saying "VDV can't keep scoring, i refuse to get him in!" a few years ago.

You should focus on the money you saved by buying Ramsey/Malouda early, not on the deficit caused by selling and buying back. Might make it easier to pull the trigger and hop on the next bandwagon (which i personally think is the best approach).

That's not to mention the higher team value should make it easier to juggle funds and cover the deficit anyway.

This is really long... I think the policy is fine as it is. The ones who jump on early will still have more budget TOTAL than the ones who jump on later, making it easier for them to replace the player.

I think this post to guilty of over-writing...

Anyhow, Jack Trotter had to pay more Ramsey, so had less to spend elsewhere.

John Smith paid less for Ramsey & got more points from him.

Succinctly put. I probably don't need to expand on it, but I will...

In your example John Smith has 0.9m more invested elsewhere in his team compared to Jack Trotter.

Also, if one were a bitter non-Ramsey owner, you might argue that Ramsey's been scoring at an unreasonably high rate and Ramsey owners are lucky enough to have his points - their advantage shouldn't be entrenched by letting them have an extra million to spend elsewhere in their team.

Leagues would be over by December if you changed it, those who got lucky early would be un-catchable once their team values shot up.

Jack Trotter does not have as much money to spend on his team come January. I am hoping come January, I will have added enough value to my team to have RVP option and not gimp other parts of the team. So far I only have 1.3 million to go as I would have 102.2M in the bank if I sold everyone.

As the secret Fantasy Footballer Kenny Rogers once said:

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

              Quick logic problem for you:

Player A and Player B start out with exactly the same 15 players, except Player A has Ramsey for 5.5m and Player B has Noble for 5.5m.

After a few weeks, none of their other players have changed in price, but Ramsey has gone up to 6.0m. Player B downgrades one of his players by 0.5m and upgrades Noble to Ramsey.

Still none of their other players change in price, but Ramsey continues to rise until he hits 7.0, at which point he's banned for 10 games for biting an opponent.

At this point, both players wildcard and get an entirely fresh 15 players.

Who has more to spend on their 15?

well player a will have 6.2 to spend replacing Ramsey

player b will have 6.5 to spend

player A will have an extra .7 from Ramsay.

player B will have the same that he started with, +.5 from ramsay and -.5 from downgrading the other player and buying ramsay for .5 more.

it's good as it is. john smith decided to use his 0.9mil (5.5 vs 6.4) differently it's his fault he can't get park chu young. you can also leave money in the bank. you are not losing money when you sell, you gain money. IF you would get all the profit we would have teams with 120-150mil team values, people taking lots of hits in first half of the season and getting all the expensive fockers in the second half. that would be a shit game. it's good as it is because you need to think twice when you sell, but still you need to sell sometime. a good example would be coleman atm. sell to get 5.3 or wait to lose it all, crying "i dont wanna lose value".

But surely John Smith has actually has an extra £1.5m now to spend elsewhere...from the £1m he saved by getting Ramsey early, plus the £0.5m he made from the price rises... and all Ramsey's points! Seems like he's been rewarded if you ask me

              A few counterpoints:

John Smith gets all the extra points from getting onto Ramsey early.
John smith bought Ramsey for 0.5m cheaper...possibly he was able to use this to upgrade a paulihno to a siggurdson, and gotten 20 extra points over a few weeks (on top of his ramsey points).

John could also just have banked the 0.5m, sell ramsey...increasing his available cash by 0.5 more. His team value is now higher than Jacks, he has more points than Jack, and he has cash in the bank to buy Park Chu Young.

If he can't afford Park Chu Young, then it's because he didn't plan for it...or his team is already stronger elsewhere (siggy vs paulihno). And he can always use some of his large ramsey/siggy points advantage to take a hit and get in the Pride of Korea some other way.

Why are we even discussing this??

£0.9m is the amount Jack Trotter paid more than John Smith for Ramsey (He paid £6.4 vs the original £5.5) Let us assume John Smith put £0.9m in the bank initially and did not use it to buy any players. When both end up selling Ramsey, Jack trotter ends up with £6.5m as correctly pointed out, but John Smith now ends up with £6.1 + £0.9 = £7.0m! He can easily take his £7.0m now and buy Park Chu Young and still have another £0.5m in the bank again! What more, he has the 40-60 odd points he earned from buying Ramsey during his good spell.

Why is there even a question of John Smith loosing out on anything in this whole thing??

Na man, AVB will not change a winning team. Soldado needs all the early prem experience as possible. Besides, Defoe will play in the Europa league game on Thursday. Soldado could be a good captain this week. Derby game and all that!! I like it

I highly doubt Defoe will start. Soldado could be a decent punt if you don't want to go with the (very) obvious LFC strikers, but it's way too risky for my taste. Going with the odds, captaincy stays on Sturridge.

            S A S - THE POSITIVES

            1. Both nailed on - Rodgers knows these 2 are key to liverpool doing well so if fit both play

            2. Developing partnership - On sunday their link up play was very good and it can only get better the more they play together.

            3. No Europe - This is a key point both will be fresher than alot of the other top forwards due to this.

            4. The return of Coutinho - When he returns both S and S will get even more chances to score

            5. I think both can easily score 20 goals each and both can end up in top 5 forwards by the end of the season.

How about the fact that this is all based on a single game against the bottom team in the division who were without a manager?

Or the fact that Sturridge gets injured a lot and Suarez will miss many games through suspension?

And Liverpool will blank plenty because as a fan I've had to manage my expectations and top 4 is still a huge ask...

If they continue playing like versus Sunderland then Sturridge isn't going to have a 20 goal season. Sturridge had one shot and that was from a corner, so you'd hope for that to change.

The points will dry up at some point as the stats don't suggest they'll keep it up. But till then, i'd rather be on the bandwagon then waiting for it to end.

Ramsey is the top midfielder and has a very low price, how can you ignore him?
Yaya is pretty expensive but he is playing as a box to box midfielder taking most direct free kicks.
He could easily have scored two goals at the weekend and is actually nailed on for City. I wish I could afford him but prefer to have Michu at the moment.

I thought that in 2000 when I was considering buying my first flat. £90,000 for a two bedroom flat in Brighton I thought was a right rip off. I'll wait until the prices fall a bit. Within five years that same flat was for sale for £200,000..and still kept going up afterwards.

when we get some evidence that their points will stop then its time to reconsider but until then they are great options.

Fun Fact: If they keep up their current rate of scoring, they'll both have a 25 goal season. (just one less than RVP last season).

Having said that Ramsey's decent value, though don't expect any where close to the same level of output going forward..

I got Ramsey in this week. I don't have a tonne of confidence in him, but he was 6.2 and a better pick than Jarvis who I had before him.

Yaya seems like a great pick to me. I would put him in the top 5 midfielders. Him, Ozil, Oscar, Eriksen, maybe Michu, are looking the best mids atm. Hefty price tag to get Yaya, but I can see him continuing to flourish. He's always been a decent FPL player Yaya. Only problem is that he's starting to get a bit expensive. But he is one of the few nailed on City players.

Lukaku - don't believe the hype

His first goal was lucky, keeper should have saved it

His second goal was atrocious defending from the keeper & the defense.

He lost the ball numerous times yesterday & looks clumsy on the ball.

Plus, he looks like a big fat spider!!

Spiders have eight legs! Keeper little chance with first goal, down to pace of the finish. Would agree that the defending was awful first half, most strikers would have flourished. He will not get that time and space to often.

                Direct from sky :
Hull City winger Robbie Brady is to undergo an operation after being forced out of the Republic of Ireland squad to face Germany and Kazakhstan.

Brady has made an impressive start to the season with Hull and was included in interim coach Noel King's squad for next month's 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

However, the 21-year-old has now withdrawn from the squad after the Football Association of Ireland confirmed Brady will require groin surgery following a scan on Monday evening.

He had aggravated the injury during Hull's 1-0 win over West Ham on Saturday when Brady scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

So seems he is under the knife.

Nope, worst week ever in terms of transfer activity for me. No budget to spare, only transfer I can see is Collins -> Clyne so no rush at all 🙂 Gotta do those un-sexy transfers sometimes to keep the team holding together.

Checked your team quick, as things stand now I'd probably save, but if Mirallas is out for a GW or two you could ditch him for a wagon. I am starting to seriously believe in the Barkley one, that kid's got talent and Everton are playing well.

            Which transfer to prioritise

            A: chester to clyne
            B: collins to wilson
            C: miralles to anyone
            D: grandin to el ahmadi

Leaning towards D. Would be cover if miralles is inj plus miralles form is defo gonna be on the way up with lukuku now in front

what cant be disputed is that he's been immense so far this this season and rodgers loves him. at the moment him and sahko would be best pairing in middle of the defence. such a nice guy as well if you ever here him interviewed. genuinely loves the game and knows he is lucky to do what he does

think so for a month or two atleast. sakho getting better and better though. im not sure what style we will see under rodgers though, we could just as well see lpool keep playing a 5-2-1-2, and kolo will have good chances playing if so. if its a 4-4-2 he will be having great competition from sakho and skrtel once johnson is back.

Nani vs Rooney is an interesting comparison if you look at the stats.

Of course, Nani will have to hit some points form and start regularly before I touch him. Rooney a safe choice as UTD coverage at the moment. With all the competition for forwards, i'm hopeful Nani can step it up.

Better then Valencia going forward by miles, but I wonder if Moyes will revert to Valencia vs the more difficult sides for his defensive tracking back. (Tho after his all round fail vs Man City, he may be out of favor now!)

A couple of years ago he was getting a tonne of goals and assists. Those numbers speak for themselves. But he hasn't done much in the last 2 years. But that's also partly due to injury. He has the talent.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

            Bargain watch

Quick update on prices of some excellent players, who are currently injured but should be a bargain when they return.

Inspired by Valar Morghulis(Keith) and Wakey btw.

I’ll try and do a regular update as and when their prices dip more…which they will on current form.

            Glen Johnson 5.8m
            Theo Walcott 9.3m
            David Silva 9.3m

What about Glen Johnson..that'll get lower as well.. Could be 5.6 by the time he's back playing practically right wing feeding Suarez and Sturridge.

Benteke is looking great value already...his price will plummet further as well as his owners look to swap for the likes of Sturridge and Lukaku.

Saying that, Lukaku vs Tekkers. That's an interesting one. One of Sturridge/Suarez. Giroud and rooney better keep it up, allot of intense competition for the forward slots!

I was unsure about adding him as he's not injured just not liked by Mourinho. Having said that Mourinho has appeared to warm to him. I think 9.5 though is about right for him...he was woefully over priced at 10.5m, even if he had started every game...especially when you consider Ozil started at just 10m.

I really want to believe that David Luiz (6.1) should be in that list. Unfortunately, even if he does nail down his spot ahead of Cahill, we won't know with enough certainty that he has for a while yet.

I haven't included those whose price has dropped because they've lost form or are out of favour. I've tried to go for nailed on options who will be straight back in when they return. But yes there are loads of others like Luiz who could be a bargain if they could nail down a first team place.

I got Livermore, needed a 4.5 mid for the bench and he's perfect. I would have got Jedinak but I think he'll fall in a few weeks. If you're looking for someone whose going to be rooted to your bench getting R.Morrison makes no sense whatsoever, as you need him for is coming of your bench when someone is injured - something which can't be guaranteed..

His crosses are still fine. He just hits them at defenders because everyone realises he's a right footed James McClean, run to the by-line and try to whip it in.

They stayed 4-3-3, Goufran moved left, Sissoko moved right, Cabaye came into the centre.

No real formation change, just Cabaye makes them tick much better.

HBA didn't look fully fit to me, at the end of the day Pardew could've subbed any one of about 8 players off at half time.

Perhaps not, but plenty of time to pull it together. Lukaku for Gayle and everything will look a bit more rosy in the garden.

He has made some strange decisions though. I went through a bad patch last year and did the same. Start to over think and look for differentials.

Mark plays the fixtures. Man City away isn't a fixture he would like. Think he made the transfer before the Everton game for the rise. Think he should get back to 343 & clean sheets are probably drying up (only 3 this week) & it is the time of the attackers.

i guess you will get a CS in toure, the others are not likely to keep one, imo. You can hope for a goal or assist from brady, Eriksen will prob give you three points. Assist from ozil likely, michus goalprobability 30/70 goal/no goal. Great front three will give you around 20 points alone.

What do you think I should do with my FT this week?

Im trying to resist any temptation to make a transfer and keep save it for the International Break.

What's your opinion on Vidic? So tempted to bring in Terry for him, but think that's a tad ludicrous, considering Vidic has better fixtures and is just as good.

            Team:
            Boruc ( Lewis )
            Vidic Walker Clyne (Wilson Burner)
            Eriksen Ozil Michu Barkley (R.Morrison)
            Giroud Suarez Rooney

            Cheers

Considering Giroud > Lukaku, but that's rather sideways dont you think?

              Yeah keep the transfer.

I have vidic too and if anything I think his ommision will only persuade ours to start him after a woeful defensive display.

Vidic is a real threat in the air at the other end too. Keep.

            Mignolet
            Coleman, Vidic, Mertesacker
            Eriksen, Michu, Oscar, Moses
            Rooney, Sturridge, Giroud
            (Harper,Whittingham, Baker, Chester)

            A) Giroud+Moses > Suarez+ Barkley and then sturridge to benteke when's fit
            B) Keep FT

I wouldn't ditch Moses when he has Palace. Go B. You have Sturridge for captain material this GW.
