Gameweek 8 sees the launch of the latest team competition for the Fantasy Football Scout community organised by FFS UEFA. Following the success of last season’s ICC-themed cricket tournament, the group have created FFS Beach Soccer World Cup 2013, with 16 teams, each comprised of 11 players, competing for the crown.

If you’re new to the concept and are wondering just what all the chatter has been about, here’s a link to their site which will help explain matters in a little more detail.

Essentially, the scoring is based around the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Each team started scouting for players (ie, FPL managers) on Sunday, October 6 and the recruitment period will come to a close on Wednesday, October 16, with the roster of team players announced on Thursday, October 17.

The teams are led by a captain and vice-captain and guided by a manager, who decide which seven of their 11 players to field each week – depending on the perceived prospects of their FPL line-ups -and which four to bench. Their overall FPL scores for the Gameweek, with hits taken into account, will form the team’s score that week – by outscoring their opponents, they chalk up a win.

The first match in Gameweek 8 will be no more than a friendly before the main event gets underway the following weekend. This sees the 16 teams compete in four groups of four between Gameweek 9 and 11 – the top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stages, where sides square up in a head-to-head elimination process from Gameweek 12 until the final in Gameweek 15. For those who missed it, Ukraine has accepted Russia's challenge to a Friendly with a Twist for GW8. Details below. Let the games begin!

If Ukraine loses:

1) Granchenko to announce on the ScoutCast following our game that, verbatim: 'Team Russia is a menacing force in the BSWC, they are the clear favorites to run away with it.'

2) For a period of one week, Russian traitor Tinkerchuk (formerly known as Tinkerman and Tinkamon) to change his name to Tinkerov, together with an appropriate Russian flag in his grav.

3) JОПTY to make a sticky topic in the BSWC article asking who the favorite team to win it is and suggest that Russia are his clear #1 favorite for the title.

If Russia loses:

1) Our team will be renamed to the Ukrainian Province of Russia for one week. All official correspondence will comply with this temporary designation.

2) General Pepin will change his name to General Pepinchenko and Colonel JK will change his name to Colonel JK'chuk for one week

3) We agree to no longer poach Ukrainian players after successfully poaching In Tommy We Trust and In Like Flynn, both Ukranian born

Whilst I know the rules say posts must be in English and this makes perfect sense most of the time, in a competition such as this surely this rule needs to be flexible? I called Berbilinho an infidel in Persian over the page and it appears to have been moderated into oblivion.

      I am 100% positive that if I call anyone on here an infidel they will take it in good humour. Yes, someone who doesn't know about the competition may look at the comment and think it weird if they bothered to read a few comments they'd get what was going on.
      
      It is evidently a word used in current Middle East countries so I can't see any problems with associations.
      
      I imagine if I stumbled an abattoir workers forum and took a comment out of context I could be pretty shocked 🙂

I feel like this whole "infidel" thing is being taken out of proportion. While the word is generally associated with Islamic extremists, it is merely used to describe non-believers of the Islamic faith and does not possess any negative connotations in itself. The word has been in common use long before the formation of any extremist organization, and just because it was adopted as a rallying cry of these extremists does not change the benign nature of the word. The word "comrade" is similarly benign (meaning friend) but is clearly associated with the Soviet Union, which caused great suffering in many people's lives and only a few decades ago was considered the greatest evil on this earth. Is there really a discernable line to be drawn here?

I agree that sensitivity is required as we attempt to use national and racial stereotypes for humour, but I am of the view (and my many muslim friends would agree) that the usage of infidel is not particularly offensive. To paraphrase the great legal philosopher HLA Hart, the law (of moderation) should not be used to protect the neurotic or hypersensitive.

Totally OT but I wonder what FFS will be like in 3 years time. I imagine by then anyone with any sense of humour, edginess or creativity would have driven elsewhere by moderation and the constant stamping down on the expression of quite normal ideas stated in quite normal language.
