Double-pivot Fantasy assets and knowing when to dump a poorly-performing player were among the key discussions on the boards this week. We also heard from some of the community’s quieter members in an epic post and look back at the latest action in the community leagues.

Hottest Topics

Dufflinks has highlighted an emerging theory as to why players such as Aaron Ramsey and Yaya Toure have emerged as a greater source of points this season. Both play in a double pivot role, Dufflinks argues, and are able to bomb forward while defences deal with the more established attacking threat of a striker and three attacking midfielders. Judging by Ramsey’s lacklustre performance on the right wing against West Brom in Gameweek 7, this is perhaps a theory with some credibility.

At what point does the ownership of a player become so huge that to ignore them runs the risk of a dramatic fall in the rankings? The Sarjeant’s discussion on this issue will prove particularly interesting reading for those without Ramsey, who is owned by almost half of all Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Tinkerman posed a question for those who use the site, but rarely take part in discussions, asking what would make them comment more often? What followed was one of the most epic discussions we’ve ever seen, with more than 200 replies. It was great to hear from those posters who rarely comment – Tinkerman’s post gave them the courage to wade into a community discussion for the first time. We’ve also been given lots of requests for new features within this thread, which we will consider over the coming weeks.

Ever thought about just quitting Fantasy football? Of course not. No matter how bad a Gameweek is we always come back for more. Not so for BennyDeBull though. He’s quit FPL after seven years, deleting his account in the process, after a particularly bad start to the season. Adios Benny. In his memory we decided to ask the community if they have ever walked away from their team or ruined it through hits. For most of us it turns out no matter how bad it gets we can’t resist coming back for more – Roscola also revealed that ignoring his team in a fit of pique ended up boosting his rank.

Instead of ditching an entire team, the more sensible ploy after a bad start is of course to ditch the worst players. But timing is crucial when dumping a player, warns The Dark Defender. His hot topic asked when is the best time to get rid, with history and experience of being burnt before emerging as key factors in his decision.

Scored asked just why is it not a good idea to double up on strikers? With Liverpool’s “SAS” strike-force of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge both performing well, why not acquire both? With the duo in such compelling form it is a very persuasive argument indeed.

Wakey has delivered an update on his Falling Stars, the name he gives to those who have dropped in price but could be set for a points haul over the coming weeks. Romelu Lukaku once again delivered, as did Patrice Evra. Meanwhile, waiting patiently on his bench for the Gameweeks ahead are Christian Benteke (now down to 8.8) Theo Walcott (9.2)and Glen Johnson (5.8). Wakey has also looked at the number of risers and fallers by team. His findings prove surprising reading, especially for Manchester United fans.

Finally, Deme’l’ God teamed up with us for a joint hot topic this week on whether we can learn anything from those currently in the top ten.

Community Leagues

The scouting stage of FFS UEFA’s Beach Soccer World Cup team tournament is now in full swing ahead of its launch in Gameweek 8. We’ve dedicated an article to the competition – those interested should use this as the place for discussion on the tournament.

Meanwhile FFS UEFA’s FA Cup themed tournament saw 116 winners emerge from Gameweek 7. They will now be joined by 44 teams from Conference North and Conference South for the Second Round Qualifying. The draw can be found here.

In Tommy We Trust’s six All Things league leaders going into Gameweek 8 are La Roja, Chilin_Dude, LawnDart, Snevitz, Crouch Potato and Binij. Tommy has also released a cup competition with a £50 prize starting in Gameweek 10. It’s called All Things 50 Quid and more details can be found here.

HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First- 2 Million+ Club, for those with an overall rank below two million in the first five Gameweeks has a new leader Barboa II, who has climbed to 221,725th. Of the 23 involved, 11 are now in the top 1,000,000.

Dogba is the new main league leader of the It’s A Long and Winding Road competition. Its head to head league leaders are Hay Number 2, Gaz Downright, IAmSuarez, Beric, Super Hans, ManAmongst and Iain_90.

In Thomas and Peppie&Felix‘s Friends Life the league leaders remain Thomass, Daniel and Al Pacino.

Ron Vlaar? Any people scouting him or owning him?

I need Debuchy out of my defense. I was going to Williams but with news he won't be back for a few more games, I'm avoiding Swansea defense. So, I need to look elsewhere, and somehow my research leads me to Ron Vlaar. I can't even explain it. Help please.

check RMT for best scoring players valued at 5 or less over any time period (next 6 weeks, next 10, whole season, whatever), and that's even before you sort it by value (have Coleman already so Distin is moot)

To be fair, RMT has not been updated ahead of GW8 yet - that will happen in the next couple of days. So, given that it's using data from last week in terms of probability of start and rates, Vlaar is not so bad - two clean sheets in three as someone has pointed out.

I'd pay a visit back at the weekend when RMT will be fully set up for the next GW.

            Thank you Mark.

Though, I would think that means Vlaar's stats will be better after the update, as the most recent clean sheet isn't in his history yet. Correct?

Actually, to be fair, I'm not sure who should come out on top. I've just looked for under 4.5 for next six Gameweeks and Clyne would be most people's bet but he has three evil fixtures in that spell. Vlaar has four at home in six off the back of two clean sheets in three, with away games at West Ham and Palace. I'm actually thinking RMT is doing pretty well here.

In addition, the season ticker rates Villa fourth for clean sheets over the next six GW's and Villa are the only team in the top five rated by teh ticker with a player in the 4.5 or below bracket certain to play.

Can I make a couple of RMT suggestions?

When you hover over the projected scores, you get a tooltip with details of the player's fixture for that week, and their FPL history in that fixture.

Secondly, show the player's names as a URL which takes you to the player's profile page in the members area.

There's not many bargain defenders around at the moment.
I'd recommend one 4m bench warmer, a Southampton defender and 3x£5.5m+ at the back.

        don't disagree

slowly tacking my team into position like a seemingly beleaguered sail boat trying to take over first at the turn

downgrading players to raise cash until upgrades present themselves

debuchy, moses, kolo, and maybe shaw or Mturner await such upgrades in the coming weeks, 1 at a time, except for whenever i'm forced to pick up bentenke

will go get more expensive defenders after i feel better about my midfield, would like to add one more premium mid alongside ozil, michu, barkley & ramsey - signs of life from hazard or mata would be welcome there; or something that proves up oscar to me

I think you have a good midfield and attack, you just got unlucky last week.
You have the cash to upgrade one of your defenders to Terry and play Terry, Toure, Coleman.
Possibly two cleansheets out of three this week.
I like the double up with Cech with Chelsea's fixtures but Walker could be another option.

Don't forget all those bonus points Terry seems to accumulate, if Chelsea keep a cleansheet it seems to be worth 8 points to Terry rather than 6.

imo i feel tt since u haf the money in bank u can do shaw to walker and play 433. not sure whether u will bench 3 of ur premium defenders for fonte and shaw even if southampton haf great fixture. If you are not willing to do so or only willing to play 1 of them then there is not much use in having both fonte and shaw. oso that aft gw12 they haf bad fixture which means tt u may play only 3 def tt u wan to play.
u can also downgrade shaw to b turner and use the money to upgrade ben arfa to a chelsea or arsenal mid. a mid consist of januzaj alfa n potentially ramsey may end up being rotation risk so u should get some1 more nailed.

    Ozil Ramsey Whittingham Brady Eriksen
    Suarez Lukaku Giroud.

I have 4.6m in the bank & i'm currently planning on Whittingham -> Michu (Brady 5th midfielder). Can anyone see anything different I could be considering or could I even possibly save the transfer (No plan in mind with 2 free transfers).

It does make a difference but Swans haven't really looked good defensively all season. When Rogers was manager he drilled his defenders to keep the ball and slowly develop the play from the back, subsequently the opposition had little of the ball and when they did the defense were already in place to defend.

Laudrup is converting them to a more direct style of play, essentailly because he has better attacking options but this means the defenders are more open to counter attack and disorganisation as generally the full backs are in the attacking third.

Basically what im trying to say is that Swansea are becoming less defensive and will concede more goals, Swansea have a good defensive reputation because of Rogers not Laudrup so think about other teams for your defense and get swansea attcking players.

When Stoke were in Europe I completed disregarded what people said about how it would take it's toll on their defensive returns in the league.
My stubborn defensive triple up of Begovic, Huth and Shawcross means that whenever I look at previous years rankings there is a 6 digit number next to 2011/12.
I worry that the same thing may happen to Swansea so there will be no defenders from them in my squad!

Silva for Michu hit? is it worth it? And HBA didn't start last game which frustated me so he had to go and because I don't want to let go any of my strikers for lukaku atm, thought barkley would give me everton cover

I'm pro-hit, so I'd say yes. Mika-Chu gets Sunderland at home next, Sunderland have a new manager, so not sure how they'll react.

Maybe you should wait until the internationals are over before making that move

if i didn't have any other pressing issues that's the switch i would do, I can see your point but I think Lukaku is the better option and it's always best to get in early.

Your team looks strong though, you could safely save a transfer - which is something I love to do

Almost same line-up as mine. I'd drop Roo or Giroud on GW10 and getting tekkers or lukaku.. but have a gut feeling Roo would be the main guy this season as RvP can't find his form. expecting Roo to have 20+ goals with 5+ assist. 🙂

Looking at your team, I assume the decision is between rooney or giroud. I'd take out rooney because he's not rising like giroud still is and I think arsenal will score a few against norwich. Southampton dominated united at old trafford last season, it won't be easy for United. They hardly created chances against crystal palace. rvp has scoring history against southampton as well to consider (a hat trick). I think Lukaku is more certain to score a few against Hull. Plus he's still rising.

I'm also undecided on this but I have a good argument for doing it.

      1) Despite what some people say Hull have a poor away defensive record conceding 2 goals every game.
      2) Everything will go through Lukaku and his manager just practicvally guaranteed him 90mins.
      3) Rooney plays the best defense in the PL.
      4) Rooney has been playing deep again.
      5) The extra cash can be used for an upgrade (Siggy to Ozil)
      6) Lukaku will keep rising in value over the next few weeks, Rooney will have to score or he will plummet.

Continuing the discussion on 2 up front players answering to some of the suggested options
JUST A REMINDER: I am talking great pairings up front in fantasy!

Tevez: never had a +20 goal season in the PL without taking at least 5 penalties (20 and 23 on 2 occasions) In those seasons he was the focal point with no solid partner so still not a successful pairing as the other player failed to make an impact.

Rooney: Max goals with Ronaldo 16, while Ronaldo was still more of a winger at that point with only 9 goals and 25 starts. After that Roos goals went down to 14, 12, 12 until Ronaldo left and Roo popped up with 26 big goals the following season

Keane and Berbatov: neither cracked 20 goals for a seasont at Tottenham

Tough to look at Yorke and Cole, Shearer, Ferdinand due to lack of stats, teammaps and number of games played was less if I am not mistaken

Looking at this it is always 1 dominant figure who will be a good fantasy option in a 2 up front or both are failures(depending of price ofcourse), this player usually is the penalty taker as well(Not Drogba though in his 29 goal season while playing mostly with Anelka in a 2 up front.

Still a bleak picture IMO for one of Sturridge or Suarez- either they will go back to their old formation and one moves to the wing( if that is Suarez than he will still interfere enough to chip points off Sturridge- exampled by the 5pts average while together last season and 7.5 while apart) or they remain in the 2 up front and Suarez will probably get the majority of shots in this way but probably at a reduced rate compared to his 5.5 per game last season.
and Rooney and RVP- while RVP has the set pieces Rooney seems to be the male in the relationship.

A lot to watch, sadly we have no idea what Rodgers will do once GJ and Cout is back.

When that was last season they shared points when together and had up to 3 points more when playing alone. Though that 5.5 average they had when together is not that bad, but still not excellent what you are looking for that cash

Why not? Could you crarify. Look at Sturridge vs Suarez so far. vs United Suarez 7 shots, Sturridge 3, vs Sunderland Suarez 7 shots, Sturridge 1(his lowest ever for liverpool), vs Palace Suarez 2 shots Sturridge 5. I know it is a very small sample size, but clearly there is a limited amount of chances up front, they cant both be good options for the course of the season IMO I am quite sure.

the 3-5-2 is so unique, as are suarez and sturridge style wise. they don't have to do any tracking back like rooney or aguero needs to do. they don't have wingers taking goals off them. this 3-5-2 is a once in a season goldmine which will only get more golden when johnson and coutinho return.

i'd back sturridge and suarez to both be in the top 3 strikers in fpl if liverpool keep the formation and moyes and pelligrini keep plodding along with their versions of 2 striker formations

That is why I was looking at historical examples if there have been any successful partnerships ever, only A cole and Yorke came close with 1 season.

And Rodgers clearly stated that formation depends on players available. Dont you think they will switch back to the 4-2-3-1 once GJ is back considering how bad they are defensively at the moment and how well it served them in the beginning. I guess with 2 strikers so on form he could maybe keep it, but I dont know.

I for 1 will be backing Tekkers and Lukaku going forward with one of the 4(RVP, ROO, Sturridge, Suarez) being the third. Probably Suarez due to fitness, greed and set pieces

yeah i think historical is fine if and when liverpool switch back formations. on paper glen johnson and coutinho make the current formation even more attractive, just compare moses playmaker and henderson wing-back to real specialists like coutinho and g.johnson.

thinking back can only really think of shearer and ferdinand. and that was in an era when you didn't get in trouble in midfield if you played 2 centre forwards. again back to the 3-5-2, it has the 3 midfielders yet also the 2 strikers. it's unqiue, it's only possible flaw is out wide where wing backs can get pinned back more than they'd like. that simply enhances the monopolising of sturridge and suarez though

wowsa. interesting. you have to say pretty conclusive then.
really wish moyes would get creative if he wants to fit rvp and rooney in. i really rate rooney as a centre forward still but hate both him in midfield and the current way moyes is fitting them both in. if man city can't pull it off with yaya toure man utd have no hope with their centre mid imo

but yeah fpl wise i think you have a great point. liverpool though could be the rare exception as this 3-4-1-2 is so unique in england. it's exciting!

it's something i've been trying to think of for the last week or 2. since i've been playing fpl i can't think of another 3-4-1-2 formation. teams have done it in odd games but long term i can't really think of anyone. villa maybe the closest last season.

it's just something i've become interested in since watford started playing a formation like it, plus i like juventus and napoli. it seems to have more pros than cons, it's also liverpool and suarez and sturridge specific though. these guys are greedy, direct and relentless. and liverpool have a ridiculous number of attacks, although suarez is very wasteful it's still a barcelona trumping number which makes only so many attacks/goals to go around a bit flawed

you make good points, I just need 1 of Suarez and Sturridge to turn into Lukaku somehow as he is someone I feel confident of. I just cant see the conversion rates for both improveing so much to make up for the lost shot numbers. I think if they remain in the 2 up front we either have 1 dominant player in terms of goals. Or 2 players scoring goals and scoing 20 each max

that is what sucks the most, In the current formation I would go for Suarez for fitness, shot numbers and corners/FKs. But when they go for that than it would be Sturridge. Its doing my head in as I can smell a Lukaka hat trick on the weekend. I might just keep Suarez now and switch to Sturridge if they switch formations. I dont know 😀 blaaah

Found something on the old folks too
Ferdinand and Shearer: played 1 season together, the season before in different clubs Ferdinand scored 25(37matches) and Shearer 31(35), after Shearer Joined Newcastle Ferdinand only scored 16 (31) and Shearer was the dominant one with 25(31)

Yorke and Cole: Cole never scored over 20 goals and Yorks best was 20 though there was 32 games back than if I can remember correctly. Their best season was 99-00, with Yorke with 20 and Cole with 19- That probably looks like the only successful fantasy pairing so far considering if they had more games they could have had 22 both I think.

I think people underestimate how good the partnership and sturridge alone is. I think he's better than a vast majority of the strikers you've mentioned. Suarez too. Sturridge has 6 in 7 with 31 to go. Only one cup competition that they're in as well, no europe, no internationals after this week. His athleticism, speed, intelligence, composure in front of goal, hunger, desire, i can only see them both getting better when Coutinho returns.

The season Anelka got 19 goals Drogba played less than half of the season so maybe it was that one 08/09. Or it could have been 09/10 but that was probably lucky as Anelka ended up with 11 and was not a good long term option

was a bit of everything. sometimes went 4-3-1-2, or 4-3-3ish with anelka wide right. whenever drogba was absent anelka did very well as a lone striker

drogba had knee issues during his slump but it also co-incided almost perfectly with playing in a front 2 as opposed to being the lone tip of the goal funnel

I'm going to stick my neck out and predict that Suarez will play in a more free, floating role eventually allowing Sturridge to play as the spearhead of attack. Hence, I think Sturridge will score more goals than Suarez and probably the reverse of this for assists.

They had an equal amount of goals and assists if I am not mistaken, there was only a small difference. In terms of fantasy they had 5.5 points when to gether and when playing alone Suarez was at 7.5 I think and Sturridge 8.5 Some +-0.2

suarez got the better of sturridge pretty much due to bps and sturridge missing the wigan game with injury (where suarez scored a hattrick).
when on the pitch together their goals and assists were the same. back then though sturridge was on the wing quite a bit still. the effect was pretty predictable though, suarez by going deeper or wider scored less goals and got more assists. suarez got 2 braces and a hattrick in his last 5 games without sturridge. with sturridge he never scored more than 1 in a game.
first game in a 3-4-1-2 suarez scores 2 in a game. small samples but predictable results

I think you're overlooking that their partnership and playing style differs from the others mentioned. They're not just goal scorers, pure number 9s. Rodgers has called them false number 9s which fits, they're very dynamic and versatile, they can go wide, they can make runs, they can search for the other and deliver the ball to them, they both have the pace, dribbling ability and intelligence to do this, they appreciate good passes so know how to give each other that chance. I think both can score 20+ this season. Lukaku is my go to lone striker. Remy, Benteke, Giroud, all their teams have players who can score goals from midfield. Liverpool don't.

I'm sticking until or if there's an injury to one of them.

That false number nine was used on Rooney and RVP last season too. But Roo ended up with 12 goals, though I must admit he was in that mid role for abut 8 games and injured for 15 so it is a bad example. But as the stat kings here will show you is that when together up front, RVP suffered in terms of goals.

Season keeper for me. He's been unlucky not to score so far and is playing well enough to keep his place even when Coutinho back. He's a bargain at that price and with Sturridge over Suarez allows you to spend elsewhere on the likes of Michu, Oscar and Baines.

Those type's of players always get subbed off at 70 minutes. They have to do alot of running and it's the energy you can get from a player like Sterling for those 20 minutes left, leading or trailing. I still prefer 70 Moses minutes over any other player in that price bracket.

personally i will take the 1st set of def. good punt on the manu def it can pay off well. but personally i may get rafael over evra if he is fit as it saves me 0.5m. if u are not looking at attacking potential u can do migs to ddg and evra to sahko or johnson it can save u abit more. the extra cash u can use to upgrade other areas.
also tt u may end up with 3 arsenal attackers which may be abit too much imo. u can take yaya or oscar for walcott n have a price rise and wait to see the form of walcott b4 swapping for him

Either save it or join lots of people in this week's favourite/most ridiculed transfer of Rooney to Lukaku

I am genuinely considering that, but probably wont go for it unless rooney gets injured. Other reason being, hull pretty tight at the back

Thinking ahead. Have had RVP since the beginning. Despite that now second (by one blinkin point) in my league. Wondering if now's the time to ditch.

    RVP -> Lukaku or Tekkers

    would allow

Morrison or Amafitano (either) -> Oscar or 9.0ish midfielder of choice

Pros: Lukaku tearing it up, plays Hull next. Morrison -> Oscar (or any other 9.0ish midfielder) is a huge upgrade.

Cons: Can't get RVP back in without a wildcard (do still have the first one), RVP plays some weak-ish teams over the next few weeks. Could be due a big score.

    whaddya reckon?

I would hold onto him for sure. It seems he wont be playing many minutes with holland, have a toe injury. By the time he coupd recover and bang.

      1. Lukaku is going to absolutely smash the defences in the next two games. He is perfect captain material and Martinez intends to keep playing him for 90 mins.

      2. As a United fan I think we'll struggle to break down Southampton as our CM is dire and Wanyama + Schneiderlin will make it extremely hard to play through the middle.

      3. Get Silva, his stats are BRILLIANT. Imo his stats this season are better than the likes of Rooney, Yaya Toure, Oscar. He creates a chance around every 25 mins on average o.O He has got 1 goal and 2 assists in 3 games and his manager has moulded some of the best CAM players: Cazorla & Isco
