Double-pivot Fantasy assets and knowing when to dump a poorly-performing player were among the key discussions on the boards this week. We also heard from some of the community’s quieter members in an epic post and look back at the latest action in the community leagues.

Hottest Topics

Dufflinks has highlighted an emerging theory as to why players such as Aaron Ramsey and Yaya Toure have emerged as a greater source of points this season. Both play in a double pivot role, Dufflinks argues, and are able to bomb forward while defences deal with the more established attacking threat of a striker and three attacking midfielders. Judging by Ramsey’s lacklustre performance on the right wing against West Brom in Gameweek 7, this is perhaps a theory with some credibility.

At what point does the ownership of a player become so huge that to ignore them runs the risk of a dramatic fall in the rankings? The Sarjeant’s discussion on this issue will prove particularly interesting reading for those without Ramsey, who is owned by almost half of all Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Tinkerman posed a question for those who use the site, but rarely take part in discussions, asking what would make them comment more often? What followed was one of the most epic discussions we’ve ever seen, with more than 200 replies. It was great to hear from those posters who rarely comment – Tinkerman’s post gave them the courage to wade into a community discussion for the first time. We’ve also been given lots of requests for new features within this thread, which we will consider over the coming weeks.

Ever thought about just quitting Fantasy football? Of course not. No matter how bad a Gameweek is we always come back for more. Not so for BennyDeBull though. He’s quit FPL after seven years, deleting his account in the process, after a particularly bad start to the season. Adios Benny. In his memory we decided to ask the community if they have ever walked away from their team or ruined it through hits. For most of us it turns out no matter how bad it gets we can’t resist coming back for more – Roscola also revealed that ignoring his team in a fit of pique ended up boosting his rank.

Instead of ditching an entire team, the more sensible ploy after a bad start is of course to ditch the worst players. But timing is crucial when dumping a player, warns The Dark Defender. His hot topic asked when is the best time to get rid, with history and experience of being burnt before emerging as key factors in his decision.

Scored asked just why is it not a good idea to double up on strikers? With Liverpool’s “SAS” strike-force of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge both performing well, why not acquire both? With the duo in such compelling form it is a very persuasive argument indeed.

Wakey has delivered an update on his Falling Stars, the name he gives to those who have dropped in price but could be set for a points haul over the coming weeks. Romelu Lukaku once again delivered, as did Patrice Evra. Meanwhile, waiting patiently on his bench for the Gameweeks ahead are Christian Benteke (now down to 8.8) Theo Walcott (9.2)and Glen Johnson (5.8). Wakey has also looked at the number of risers and fallers by team. His findings prove surprising reading, especially for Manchester United fans.

Finally, Deme’l’ God teamed up with us for a joint hot topic this week on whether we can learn anything from those currently in the top ten.

Community Leagues

The scouting stage of FFS UEFA’s Beach Soccer World Cup team tournament is now in full swing ahead of its launch in Gameweek 8. We’ve dedicated an article to the competition – those interested should use this as the place for discussion on the tournament.

Meanwhile FFS UEFA’s FA Cup themed tournament saw 116 winners emerge from Gameweek 7. They will now be joined by 44 teams from Conference North and Conference South for the Second Round Qualifying. The draw can be found here.

In Tommy We Trust’s six All Things league leaders going into Gameweek 8 are La Roja, Chilin_Dude, LawnDart, Snevitz, Crouch Potato and Binij. Tommy has also released a cup competition with a £50 prize starting in Gameweek 10. It’s called All Things 50 Quid and more details can be found here.

HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First- 2 Million+ Club, for those with an overall rank below two million in the first five Gameweeks has a new leader Barboa II, who has climbed to 221,725th. Of the 23 involved, 11 are now in the top 1,000,000.

Dogba is the new main league leader of the It’s A Long and Winding Road competition. Its head to head league leaders are Hay Number 2, Gaz Downright, IAmSuarez, Beric, Super Hans, ManAmongst and Iain_90.

In Thomas and Peppie&Felix‘s Friends Life the league leaders remain Thomass, Daniel and Al Pacino.

this guy was discussed on a football weekly lately. think it was something about why no 'bigger' club has taken a chance on his yet, they've been sniffing around for a while but obviously not impressed with something, attitude maybe

I've said for a while it won't be long until Premier League clubs come snooping for Basel's players, they've had a too good of squad for too long. Think most bigger clubs are just concerned about taking the chance with players from the Swiss league.

Two FTs this week. Waiting for the internationals... but how does this sound?

    Rooney to Lukaku
    Coleman to Baines

Next transfer will be Giroud to Benteke to give Studge, Benteke and Lukaku up front...

Or is the Coleman to Baines a sideways move?

Me too. The whole argument is BS.

Barkley, Gibbs, Redmond, Ox, Walcott, Morrison, Sterling, Zaha, Shaw, Jones, Smalling, Townsend. We may not be close to Spain's & Belgium's (golden generation) young talent worldwide but we can certainly hold our own in terms of young talent having a chance in the PL.

Having spent the Seventies watching home grown "talent" in the prem i feel qualified to say it's not a pretty sight..not the odd highlights game that you see now but the majority was shocking compared to today's standard...and how did the national team do with all the home grown talent playing in every team ?...they qualified for nothing.

I actually think the opposite. The England team would improve if more English player went to spain/germany/italy. Then we have a group of players experienced in a number of different leagues with different football cultures.

I have a bit of a captaining dilemma arising. Any advice backed up with stats (horses for courses) would be much appreciated. RMT also welcome.

    Mingolet

    Walker, Ivanovic, Clyne, Distin, Wilson,

    Eriksen, Ozil, Michu, Barkley, Arnautovic

    Lukaku, Giroud, Suarez

I have captained Suarez for the last two gameweeks which has worked out well. But my player's fixtures are all very tasty. Michu (SUN), Giroud/Ozil (NOR), Lukaku/Barkley (HUL), even a defender could work for me, Ivanovic (CAR). Suarez (new).

I have a saved transfer also. I was thinking Ozil - Walcott and Eriksen - Oscar. Does anyone know anything about the Walcott injury?

thats 2 per game. Everton will score 2 against them i would think, they're looking pretty decent going forward but Suarez is also a good captaincy shout. Of those 2 i personally would go with Lukaku, home game an all that.

      This made me 😆

In 1988 Liverpool won the league by 9 points.
In 1989 Liverpool had the title snatched from their grasp by a last minute goal.
In 1990 Liverpool strolled to yet another league title.

In 2011 Manchester United won the league by 9 points.
In 2012 Manchester United had the title snatched from their grasp by a last minute goal.
In 2013 Manchester United strolled to yet another league title.

Liverpool's demise came about when they replaced their successful Scottish manager with another Scottish manager.

Manchester United have recently replaced their successful Scottish manager with another Scottish manager.......

Can't see Utd buying Aguero and him going on to score in the FA Cup final for them though.

        Quick question chaps...

We played the Sky game for years in my work but this season a few of the guys fancied a change of scenery. This was implicitly brought about in the hope of curbing this one anorak who was lifting the cash month in, month out!

Seizing the opportunity, I suggested the FPL because "a friend of a friend" played it with his mates and reckoned it was good, harmless fun. The chaps agreed and thus this FPL veteran set about building a team that would largely subsidise next summer's trip to Majorca at this bunch of novices expense.

Cue my start from hell. I've finished in the top 5K once and the top 10K another time but I am currently languishing behind the best part of 2M other managers at the moment. The season's winner's prize has already long gone (the anorak's looking good for that btw) but I think I've discovered an anomaly to help me win more than my fair share of monthly purses. 😯

Without shouting it from the rooftops, could someone answer me this...

Is it possible to come in absolutely plum last in the overall league yet still win every monthly heat?

Interesting would be happy to find out more. My though is it would need to involve hits so can't see how it would be every month. Also not sure if others at bottom of your league wouldn't catch on to it and copy

Of course not. You'd be no lower than being the overall winner.

            Unless I misunderstood the question.

whats peoples opinion on doubling up at the back? no go area?

most people seem to be against it but say you are playing 3-4-3 plus obviously the goalkeeper, surely the odds of all 4 different teams getting a clean sheet is higher than the odds of 3 different teams keeping a clean sheet

          flawed logic in my view!

I think Swansea have a very nice run of games defensively speaking if you're looking to transfer.

What do people think of Ramsey and Yaya's abilities to keep scoring? As Wenger and a blogger on this site have commented, players scoring tends to be cyclical.I can't imagine that to be more true than for defensive midfielders although both of the above are very much box to box. I can't help but think Michu, Walcott, Oscar and Barkley are better long term targets. I feel like buying either now would risk what the trader calls a topping tail. Then again, I'd hate to give advice on the cyclical nature of this game after refusing to include Gareth Bale in my team last year.
