Fantasy Football Scout are pleased to announce the eighth instalment of our open-to-all, free-to-enter Cup competition, sponsored by Paddy Power.

This is your chance to join our previous winners – donnellyc, Jonty (no, really), Goonerdave, Ninja_Fit_Saints, sleepingmaster, Mch and reigning champion, Wild Rover – in our hall of fame.

Seasoned veterans can click here to submit their entry. For full details of when it starts and the prizes on offer, read on…

What is the Paddy Power Cup?

The Paddy Power Cup is our version of the Fantasy Premier League’s Fantasy Cup game. Entrants who qualify for the first round will be randomly drawn against each other and the winner of the tie is whoever has the highest score from that Gameweek, minus points spent on transfers (like in the original game and in head-to-head scores). In the event of a tie, the Manager highest in the overall standing will progress.

When does it start?

The qualifying round will take place in Gameweek 11 but you can enter after the Gameweek is played out. All entries received before Monday November 11 will be entered into the qualifying round. In this first cup competition we will have 1024 qualifiers for the first round – those 1017 (plus 7 previous winners who will earn a bye if entered) with the top scores in Gameweek 11 will progress to the first round proper to be played in Gameweek 12. Again, FPL standing will decide who progresses in the event of tied positions.

How do I enter?

Simply fill out the entry form here. You will be sent a confirmation email to verify your entry. You can also check that you are entered via this list.

When will I find out if I’ve qualified?

Results from the qualifying round will be published on Tuesday November 12

What is the Gameweek Schedule

Each round of the Paddy Power Cup will be played out over the following schedule:

  • Qualifying – Gameweek 11
  • Round 1 – 1024 teams – Gameweek 12
  • Round 2 – 512 teams – Gameweek 13
  • Gameweek 14 – Break
  • Round 3 – 256 teams – Gameweek 15
  • Round 4 – 128 teams – Gameweek 16
  • Round 5 – 64 teams – Gameweek 17
  • Gameweek 18 – Break
  • Round 6 – 32 teams – Gameweek 19
  • Gameweek 20 – Break
  • Round 7 – 16 teams – Gameweek 21
  • Quarter-Final – 8 teams – Gameweek 22
  • Semi-Finals – 4 teams – Gameweek 23
  • Final – 2 teams – Gameweek 24

When are the fixtures released?

The fixture list for each round will be published a day or two before each Gameweek deadline.

Are there prizes?

Sponsors Paddy Power are supplying the competition with some great prizes and we’re supplementing these with Amazon Vouchers. The prizes break down as follows:

Winner – £100 worth of free bets. £100 Amazon Voucher
Runner-up – £50 worth of free bets. £50 Amazon Voucher
3rd Place – £50 worth of free bets. £25 Amazon Voucher

In addition, the top scoring manager from each round will win a £25 free bet from Paddy Power on supply of their Paddy Power username.

Cup Entrants will need a Paddy Power account and be aged 18 or over to be eligible for some of the above prizes. Prizes are also subject to Paddy Power’s terms and conditions. You can, of course, enter without being over 18 and without a Paddy Power account but will not be eligible for the free bet prizes.

Do I have to enter if I’m previous winner?

Yes, because your FPL team ID will have changed, we will need to record you entry again. As a previous winner, you will be given a bye to the first round proper.

Do I need to be registered with Fantasy Football Scout?

We ask you to supply a FFS username so we can feature you, as a member of our community, in any articles associated with the tournament. Ideally, you will already have a username with us but this is not essential to enter – you must, however, supply a username for the purpose of the tournament so you can be identified in articles. You must not change this username throughout the course of the tournament, should you do so without permission, or should you enter multiple teams or if your FFS account comes under moderation for any reason, we reserve the right to remove you from the tournament.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why did Michu fall he was flagged & only had 102%

Anyone know this black art of flags?

Quite simply it doesnt matter if he's flagged. If he's over 100% he's falling. His price is only protected if the flag is removed

Player requires more NTO for price change. Michu was already 9x% at a point last night.
He was then flagged and his % dropped to 75%. More NTO over the night and he was 102% - ready for the drop.

I did very well for my standards last season and the season before that I did well in my ML so I think I've become a decent FPLer. This year I've learnt that individual price values don't really depict the value of a player. When I first started, I'd get the most expensive possible and have a rubbish team. Then I would try balance it. Now I have more money left in the bank than I know what to do with really.

    My team currently is:

    Boruc Adrian
    Clyne Coleman Toure Ward Wilson
    Ozil Ramsey Januzaj R.Morrison Brady
    Aguero RVP Sturridge

I've had Morrison from the start and Januzaj as soon as he had his first game. I've also had RVP from the start and captained him pretty much every game and I think I've done okay. I've only brought in Aguero this GW and I would say I had around 10.0 or something just sitting in the bank. You can say that it's idle money being wasted but I feel my previous GW's have been decent enough to void that. Thoughts on this going forward? My ML thinks my midfield looks light but it's been delivering and I do have the funds if needed to do any upgrades. Was also pondering Sturridge > Suarez but I had Sturridge from when he was very cheaply priced, so pending any long term injury, he will most likely stay.

    tl;dr:
    > FPL newbie has epiphany
    > player value is more important than player cost
    > rubbish midfield, spare cash, RVP captained weekly: still does decent
    > keep calm and don't worry about having idle funds

TBH I'm suprised at how well it has done. If you were to tell me this team would be any decent before the season began, I'd have a laugh. I still kind of do to see a midfield like this. It's new to me but may as well enjoy the ride as long as its working.

i just went four weeks in a row with over 3m in bank, your right that just picking the most expensive player you can afford is a rookie mistake.

Correct. It does feel weird having that money lying around and not knowing what to do with it. Also provides the comfort of knowing you can grab any player without having to do a massive reshuffle.

Not sure how much sense Ward and Wilson make. Only a slight upgrade there would give you the flexibility to go 4-3-3 on occasion. So, yes, the money is wasted sitting in your bank.

I do keep 2 mil in bank if I can.. but 10 seems abit extreme.. sone expensive players are worse than some cheaper ones. But generally the price is like that for a reason and they just get it wrong sometimes. This year has been abit different than usual but im sure it will get back ti norm!

My main mini league rival and I are very close together (I'm 7 points behind after first 10 weeks)

It has worked out that we now share a lot of the same team. Should I make an effort to match him points wise each week, or throw in some differentials to take a risk?

Or will the captain choice be key?

Has anyone ever employed a specific catch-up strategy before that is beyond the slow but steady of ignoring differentials and simply trying to pick the highest scoring players?

Trying to figure out if there is something more interesting or exotic that might also be effective, regardless of the risk. Michu to Ramsey is the obvious transfer for me, but if I want to climb I am just not sure how that helps me very much if most of the people ahead of me already have Ramsey.

For example, if Ramsey scores 5 ppg from here on out, how much more valuable is a differential who scores 6 ppg? Is it just 1 pt so I need to load up on differentials in the hopes that many of them hit big while the heavily owned regress a bit? Spreading the risk more that way.

Maybe consistent starters, top 15-20 in ppg but less than 10% TSB?

But then the differentials go along getting 7 points per game, but if they are a foward for example they are taking up room that could be Suarez or Aguero that are getting 15 points a game. So i only get them if i have a hoe that needs filling

If say gnabry gets 6 points and a few thousand have him somehow and ramsey get his 5 points and say hypothetically all owners dont notice gnabry's consistency and the ownership of both players remains the same then those who have gnabry starting instead of Ramsey will sky rocket ahead

Would love to know how much OR an extra 1ppg is from a low TSB vs a template TSB -- not sure if that is even possible to calculate since it's a team effort.

Too early for that imo. Play the game the best you can and stop looking at others. That is the logical way to do it at GW10.

There is a time and a place to back differentials. However there will always be a core group of players that you should have in your team at certain times of the season, Ramsey is one of those players.

In my opinion - and thinking solely of Overall Rank - the best strategy is to always have the best players.

I think its too early to play "catch-up"

In 28 weeks, anything and nothing is possimpible. At this point, I'm trying to play safe as my team is already shit and I don't want to use my WC.

      Oops -- wrong spot.

I would agree with these sentiments but the very nature of OR is that I am looking at others, and as I am at 1.6m it's quite a mountain to climb -- just exploring riskier options to make up significant ground.

Just cross-referenced those crude criteria and came up with this list of midfielders who get consistent minutes when healthy), at least 4 ppg, and less than 10% TSB:
      Silva
      Amalfitano
      Hernandez (if fit)
      Siggy
      Gerrard
      Janujaz
      Mirallas

Heavy forwards for captaincy and all risky differential mids might be the way to go since if Ozil, Yaya and Ramsey fail, everyone in FPL is screwed in midfield.

Januzaj and Silva are worth owning. You still need to take a measured approach but those are two players I'd say are very good prospects if you want to rise the ranks quickly.

        oh nice you're at 1.6mil too, ^5

So i think it's safe to say we're going through the same thoughts at the moment. I've done Michu > Silva this week. Rest of my team is

        Mig
        Coleman Ivanovic Clyne Burner Chester
        Ozil Silva Hazard Ramsey JWP
        Suarez Lukaku Benteke

I'm quite confident with my front line strikers (of course, Aguero is a worry) but i think they will tick along nicely.

Quite a heavy midfield but i'm still hopeful. 1.6mil and another red arrow this week is highly discouraging though. What's the rest of your team like?

nice topic. Looking to play some catch up. League leaders have the obvious suspects in their teams so I'm looking at differentials from the top teams (Silva at the moment stands out) and also probably match their defenders but go for the BPS-magnet counterparts (Williams to their Chico, Vert to their Dawson).

But right now I'm focusing on my own team, good captaincy decisions and hopefully that will get me out of 1.6 mil. This season's taking its toll on me. Most of my work ML are leagues ahead of me but first time playing this game!

Don't do anything too different at this very early stage of the marathon, just get the captain choices right....

I halved my rank in both of the last two weeks, from 820k to 440k to 215k. All I did was hit Suarez (c), then hit Aguero (c)

Now back to Suarez (c) for another haul vs Fulham.

Even with a bad rank, everyone is still so close, a big captain haul gets you moving nicely...

Have you got hot big hitters ready to pounce on the big hauls?

Best strategy by far for catching up is the falling stars...Look to those returning from injury or unfancied for a host of reasons..Plenty of low ownership and quality to be had...Glen Johnson/Kompany/Cabaye/Benteke and hundrds of others, and you increase the overall quality of the squad due to reduced prices. Currently fallers outnumber risers across the squads by 10:1..and some right hidden gems in there.

Seems like a good long term bet to me.

Look at his stat over a couple of years he always scored a few (spot kicks and shots from long distance imo) and assisted a few. It looks like he will also get at least 100 pts by the end of this season and that means 86 pts in the next 28 games. Price now is 6.8, so points per game per money spent = 86 / (28 * 6.8) = 1.1. A very very high return ratio here indeed but you need to be patient and play him every him until the end of the season.

      Nice pick anyway 🙂
