Sunday’s pair of fixtures provided us with a single goal and worries over two of the most popular Fantasy assets in the game after Michu and Romelu Lukaku both failed to finish their respective fixtures. Steven Caulker grabs the winner for Cardiff over former club Swansea, whilst Jan Vertonghen climbs to the top of the defender standings to justify his premium price tag:

Caulker the Bluebirds Hero
The summer signing grabbed the only goal of the game as Malky Mackay’s side prevailed in the South Wales derby. With two goals to his name since arriving from Tottenham, Caulker is now Cardiff’s joint-top scorer and has also accrued nine bonus points after yesterday’s match – more than double the tally of any of his team-mates. Initially priced at 5.0 in FPL, the centre-half has failed to pick up much Fantasy interest – he currently sits in just 2% of teams – but has now reached 48 points for the season; the same number as Everton’s Seamus Coleman, for example, and just one less that former Tottenham team-mate Kyle Walker. Elsewhere in the home defence, Ben Turner earned his highest return of the campaign; with a couple of bonus points accrued, the 4.0 priced defender is now up to 27 points but while he’s proving decent value, trails far behind his fellow Cardiff centre-half.

Michu Worry for Swans
Without a goal in the four league games prior to yesterday’s 1-0 defeat, it’s fair to say the Spaniard has toiled in recent weeks. Many Fantasy managers have chosen to keep faith as a result of Swansea’s fixtures but after limping out of the derby, the exodus is picking up pace – already, significant numbers have parted company since yesterday’s match. After the game, Laudrup cast doubts over his star midfielder’s availability for the weekend home game against Stoke:

“Michu is not 100% right now. He is struggling with some physical problems and on top of that he had to leave the pitch with another twisted ankle so probably he will be out for a couple of games.”

The Swans boss will definitely be without Michael Vorm for the Potters showdown after the Dutchman received his marching orders for denying a goalscoring opportunity – he will sit out a one-match ban and return for the Gameweek 12 trip to Fulham.

Vertonghen Proves his Worth
The Belgian was again fielded at left-back as Michael Dawson and Vlad Chiriches were handed the centre-half roles at Goodison. Everton had scored in each of the previous six but were denied by Andre Villas-Boas’ backline, who have now gone three consecutive games without conceding – indeed, yesterday’s clean sheet was their seventh of the season already. Vertonghen’s propensity to pick up bonus points also came to the fore – his maximum haul means he now has 12 this term, equalling his tally for the whole of the previous campaign. More significantly, yesterday’s nine-point haul took the 7.1 priced Belgian to the top of the defender rankings on 61 points, though with City and United in the next three, many may hold fire in investing for now.

Elsewhere at the back, Villas-Boas defended his decision to keep Hugo Lloris on the pitch after the keeper sustained a head injury in a collision with Romelu Lukaku. The Spurs boss admitted the Frenchman has no recollection of the incident but went on to confirmed Lloris is “well” in his post-match interview.

Toffees Resolute
Leighton Baines and co also picked up the points, with the goalless draw handing Everton their fifth clean sheet of the season. While Vertonghen’s ability to deliver bonus shows no sign of slowing, 7.7 priced Baines has suffered in recent weeks – he has failed to deliver any bonus in each of the last two Gameweeks, despite his side delivering a clean sheet on both occasions. Nonetheless, yesterday’s result saw him make a move up the leaderboard to justify his premium price tag – he’s now sitting third for defenders but, like Tottenham, has some tricky fixtures on the horizon, with Liverpool, United and Arsenal in the next five.

Barkley Warms the Bench
The Toffees midfielder dropped out of the starting line-up for the first time this terms as Leon Osman returned to the XI after producing a goal and assist against Villa last weekend. Clearly, Martinez is keen to protect the youngster and it was noticeable that prior to yesterday’s match his game time had dropped – 79 minutes in Gameweek 8, then just 59 minutes at Villa Park. Despite dropping from 5.7 to 5.6 in FPL last week, Barkley remains the third most popular midfielder in the game, with 35% ownership – yesterday’s sub role, allied with the fact he has now gone four fixtures without a goal or assist, looks set to signal plenty sales.

Lukaku Concern for Martinez
The big Belgian’s 25% FPL owners will be somewhat concerned after he was forced off towards the end following the collision with Lloris. Martinez admitted Lukaku was withdrawn after picking up a thigh problem in the clash – given that he had notched five times in five prior to yesterday’s match and now has a trip to basement-dwellers Palace up next, he looks a real captaincy contender for next weekend. An injury update will be anxiously awaited, with would-be suitors perhaps putting their plans on hold until Martinez gives us further prognosis.

    My team is:

    Mignolet (Harper)
    Terry Williams Clyne Fonte (Wilson)
    Ozil Hazzard Couthinio Amalfitano Barkley
    Suarez Aguero Lukaku

Wanting to take Amalfitano out or should I play 4-3-3 for weekend?
    Any other suggestions?

Ok, i just read Jonty's article and I need to vent/ start a discussion/ ask for advice, I know a few people in the same boat.

Have never finished below 54k, am currently sitting at nearly 800k (don't wanna look)
First 4 weeks I was cruising, and everything went downhill after the weekend in which Benteke and Walcott got injured, from 40k.
I missed the Ramsey and Barkley wagons thinking they'd be flash-in-the-pans, caught the end of Girouds and have done well with Negredo.
Planned 0 transfers for next week and 3 players doubtful.....

Now a guy in one of my ML who takes -8 minimum every week and has spent 100+ points on transfers this year is 10 points behind me!!

The only thing I can think I am doing different is trying to spend LESS on transfers, I would happily take -4 before this year. Read Jonty's notes on is it casual or common sense, and as much as my brain tells me Ramsey will dry up how can I not have him??

    My team:

    Migs, Harper
    GJ, Walker, Coleman, Clyne, Burner
    Ozil, Michu, Oscar, Barkley, JWP
    Benteke, Lukaku, Studge

    WC played, 0.5m in bank

The fixtures for this upcoming GW are tasty, but how can I be without aguero v sunderland?
Am thinking of blowing this up over the next couple of weeks. I've been saying for 9 weeks that Ramsey isn't worth it, while my rivals are gaining points and TV, when do I start again?

Stick with it mate, we are not even a 3rd of the way through the season yet so recovery is more than likely if you keep your head.

Let's get Ramsey out of the way first. My opinion is you should've had him long ago but I started the season with him after watching Arsenal several times throughout pre-season. I thought he was a steal on his preseason form but now at £7m+ it is a different matter. At the end of the day though, is there really any other solid options in that mid price range that you would prefer? Certainly not in a team playing anything near as well as Arsenal.

You have a little too much invested at the back for my liking and double Liverpool defence isn't a good idea as long as they stick with this 3-5-2 formation so I would suggest getting rid of one do those 2. As the formation still favours Johnson in an attacking sense, I would advise a move from Mignolet to a cheaper keeper who's tougher fixtures can be filled by Harper (who may see you through to January at 4.0) - look at Boruc first but maybe Pantillmon or Myhill could work. The latter would leave you exposed if McGregor and Foster returned before January though. Jaaskelainen is another option given that you have no West Ham defenders but he is in the same price bracket as Mignolet.

Too much invested in a non-producing midfield position also I believe. I would consider dropping Michu to someone in that mid price range bracket I mentioned before as he lacks form and picked up an injury yesterday. Consider Ramsey strongly here, but alternatives include the likes of Lallana and Sessegnon. The latter's fixtures look more prosperous.

These two moves should set you up with roughly an extra £3m to add to your £0.5m currently in the bank. I think you should sit on Sturridge (I assume you got him cheap?) but perhaps upgrade one of the other 2 to Agüero or Rooney, possibly even Van Persie if you find a way. Look closely at the fixtures until January before deciding who to buy and sell. Sunderland looks nice for Agüero but after that he faces some tough defences as well as a long trip for internationals.

These are just my views but my biggest piece of advice would be to continue what has made you successful in the past as it should come good in the end - especially if you find the right squad balance at the right times.

      Good luck.

        Great reply, thank you!

It's not Ramsey's value, it's more that I still believe he will dry up, but not having him is hurting me more, and there's no one better at the mo.

I got Studge on the cheap, but Suarez has been more explosive and that's where I'm losing out I think. I think I need to be patient, let's see if I can!
        Thanks for the advice

No problem mate, happy to try and help out.

I have Sturridge and am more than happy with him over Suarez. The week Suarez had a hat-trick, having watched the game, it could have easily been the other way round.

I think Barkley will start. Osman was shite and since Barkley came in, the whole team has improved in offence.

and about Suarez, I just can't have them all. I am happy with Sturridge as a coverage.

Which Heavy Hitting Mid should I get, Gerrard, Coutinho, Silva, Hazard Oscar Mata?

Looking at the next few games and up to January WC there looks to be three teams to back right now (assuming most on here have Arsenal mids already); Chelsea Liverpool and Man City.

Gerrard - An under the radar option, on most set pieces and penalties which behind SAS has bought returns in four of the last five and sees very favourable fixtures in four of the next five.

Coutinho - 0.4 cheaper than Gerrard, the most attacking midfielder and capable of class. Hasn’t shown it yet this season and looked rusty in one-on-ones against Ramsey this weekend. Higher risk but maybe higher reward.

Silva – It’s hard to look beyond him in City’s mid at the moment, The In-form mid of FPL, but tougher fixtures than Chelsea and more prone to tiredness/rotation than those at Liverpool.

Hazard, Oscar and Mata - but who do you pick!? Who’s mourinho’s new favourite after the weekend..

With Chelsea, I'd actually be so short-sighted as to base my pick between Oscar or Hazard depending on how the Schalke game does. If one of them gets rested or impresses big, I'd go for him. For me there's not much between them.

Overall though, City are scoring goals, Silva is relatively involved fantasy-wise, seems like a good pick at the moment.

they have played Liverpool and united away already and walked away with 4 pts, should have been 6.

Chelsea aren't exactly great at the minute and I can see them giving Arsenal problems at the Emirates. Expect them to pack the midfield and make it really hard for Arsenal.

I don't agree i'm afraid, no way should they have won at Liverpool. Also utd having been having issues so that could be misleading too.

Southampton have had the easiest fixtures in the first 10, and with the next ten being the hardest I'll be very impressed if you're right. Put some money on them for the table at Christmas maybe, you'd be quids in if that happened!

Maybe AVB is! I think it's great that he won't play all the pricey new signings, giving Holtby, Townsend and Siggurdson plenty of gametime and how he seems to grind out results even if many Spurs supporters don't like that style.

But I still think he needs to give Defoe a few games.

I was surprised he stayed on as well. He wanted to play on, should have been taken off regardless. It's just football, no reason to take a risk letting him stay on, Friedel is a good replacement.

I'm not saying he shouldn't have been removed. But AVB doesn't have a medical degree, although he's that smart he might have.

It's for a doctor to decide. But AVB is getting blamed?

If he was concussed shouldn't he be rested for a week like in rugby until he gets the all clear after a load of checks ?

Ultimately it's the managers job to do the subs, no? Surely AVB got some feedback from the doctors and then made a decision based on that. Hard to tell what they said though, but it seems very, very weird to let him play on after that.

Doctor's can't decide a head injury that quickly..it's just silly to think they can...If a person is feeling sick within 24 hrs is the usual marker for the first sign of serious injury.

              • 13 Years

Exactly, so they should err on the side of caution, no? He could have gotten another knock to his noggin, there were still about 20 minutes to play.

      • 13 Years

With a head injury it should be up to the ref to send him off the field of play on health grounds...The manager and the club doctors have a vested interest to try and keep him on, and in any case you can't decide a head injury within a couple of minutes...Simple solution...Any team having a player ordered off by the ref due to a head injury is allowed an extra substitution.

In this case it was clear-cut, but in other cases might not be. Don't think we need more rules, but definitely some caution around these kind of injuries.

someone posted a post earlier about this. In short:

When flagged, players need 2.5times for transfers out to drop (michu must have met that new threshold).
If they are flagged more than 2 days, once the flag is removed, they are price protected for 8 days (no drops or rises)

I need to find 0.2m to fund Michu -> Silva this week (who I much prefer to any of the CHE mids). Best way to do it?

    A) Giroud -> Benteke
    B) Nolan -> Sess/Snodgrass/other 6.6m or below mid

    Boruc
    Baines, Terry, Toure, Clyne
    Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas
    Aguero, Suarez, Giroud

    Davis, Nolan, Ravel, Ward
    Bank 0.4m, 2 free transfers

    Who to replace him?

    A) Januzaj

So that we are forced to start getting alternatives. I'm 56pts adrift in my ML, have enough fit replacements at the moment and need differentials to close the gap.

And it keeps the game interesting.

It's understandable when it's for a striker who will be more explosive.
I got in Suarez and captained him for Lukaku last week.
Got in Aguero & captained him this week for Giroud.

Ah not bad no, like yourself. Was saying this morning though, had it down to Giroud & Michu to Kun & Ramsey for -4 with the option of taking out Ozil this week but decided to keep the trannie to sort out my def. With Michu injured I'll prob end up doing those transfers now anyway. So...

Giroud, Michu > Aguero, Ramsey (?)

This is one of the oldest remedies in the book.

A bag of frozen peas (or veg) has small particles and a large surface area allowing it to form itself around the injured area whilst providing maximum coverage.

General belief is that he's not worth getting if Carroll isn't fit.
