An old friend grabbed the headlines this weekend as three red cards were handed out, while the Tightrope also welcomed a trio of new recruits to the rarefied atmosphere of their fourth yellow card.

No stranger to these pages (he even gets a mention in the first ever article in this series), Lee Cattermole racked up his eighth career red card on Saturday. The midfielder earned his fifth dismissal in just 88 games as a Sunderland player for a late and clumsy lunge on Hull City’s Ahmed Elmohamady – the Black Cats will now be without the combative ball-winner for the next three games as he sits out the midweek Capital One Cup tie against Southampton and upcoming league games against Manchester City and Stoke. Gus Poyet may turn to Craig Gardner as a replacement, though with four reds and 25 yellows in his last 83 league games he’s no stranger to a card or two either.

Joining Cattermole on the sidelines for the same three games will be his left-back colleague Andrea Dossena. Less than five minutes after the midfielder was sent packing, Dossena lost the ball and saw fit to recklessly jump into a tackle with David Meyler that left the former Sunderland man prostrate. The crimson flash duly followed, leaving Sunderland with a mountain to climb and some holes to fill until both men return for the Gameweek13 clash with Aston Villa.

Also of note in Sunderland’s nine-man loss to Hull – and highlighted post-match by a seething Gus Poyet – was a mis-timed, two footed, and off-the-ground challenge by the recently returned Robbie Brady late in the game. The referee, Andre Marriner, decided it merited only a yellow card, meaning it’s very unlikely Brady will see further action from the FA upon review of the incident.

Less likely to be reprieved is Fulham’s ever-present Sascha Riether, as his clear stamp on Adnan Januzaj during their loss to Manchester United went unpunished at the time. The right-back will now be subject to the full wrath of the suits at Soho Square – a three- match ban looks entirely likely for the German as we await more news.

Completion of the ban action this weekend came in the South Wales derby, with Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm given his marching orders for felling Frazier Campbell as he bore down on goal late in the game. For denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, Vorm will sit out just a single game for the Jacks who will need to call on the services of Gerhard Tremmel for the visit of Stoke. Vorm will presumably now play away in Europe on Thursday and then return to league action in Gameweek 12 at Fulham.

On to the tightrope now, and a busy weekend saw midfielders Antonio Valencia, Jon Walters and Paulinho all climb aboard the high wire to test their balancing skills. Eight players are all vying to follow Lucas Leiva in picking up a single match ban – Valencia now has cards in his last two league appearances, while Paulinho goes one better with three cards in three league games. He now takes pole position as he faces up to Newcastle next weekend.

People are selling Ozil finally. Rather too slowly for my liking though, only 3.7% fall today and he's sitting at -42%. I hope everyone does Ozil > Ramsey so I can get him in for around 10.5 for his good fixtures.

Re Lallana price still rocketing despite two blanks.

You have to understand how casuals' tiny minds work. When they want to replace a player (Barkley in this case) they bring in the player that is highest in the transfers page sidebar for the money they have available. Most of them have Ramsey already so they are now having to bring in Lallana.

Also, televised fixtures make a huge difference. If someone performs in a televised fixture they can see insane transfers in. Monday night telly is pretty deadly too as it's the only game.

I can only remember one I had. It was the eve before Fulham took on QPR last season. I dreamed that I was checking the BBC sport score for Fulham v QPR and Berbatov had scored 4 goals.

Filled with hope, Berbatov went onto notch twice very early on, thought I was really onto something! But alas! It remained a two goal performance from Berbatov.

Yeah he's defying all the factors that were initially thought to cause his upturn in goalscoring. Still doing it with Cazorla back. Was doing it with Walcott. Apparently fixture proof too.

I think the bottom line is that he's got an incredible shot and you can get shots from distance in any game, regardless of who you play with or against.

By the time any regression happens the points have gone and the damage has been done. It may not even be regression, it may be that the underlying shooting has got worse/better. It does change over careers for whatever reason.

Ramsey was playing in the double pivot for most, if not all of those games.

The risk is not solely from Walcott's return. It's from Flamini and Arteta both being fit and being first choice at CM, which leaves Ramsey shunted out to the wing where he's been cack.

When Flamini, Arteta and Walcott are all fit, where does Ramsey play?

Ofcourse. There is no doubt Ramsey won't be starting every match like he has done so far. I still think he's first choice in the double pivot with 1 of Flamini/Arteta though. Just gives them better balance. He's the best midfielder in the league right now, Wenger wouldn't drop him imo, it would just be normal rotation during a busy schedule or a 1 game rest e.t.c.

Well Wenger has had options in Gnabry and Rosicky on the wing.

Take the West Brom game, for example, I think both the above were fit, but Ramsey was still played on the right wing ahead of them, with Flamini and Arteta starting in the double pivot.

I still think Ramsey will get a fair amount of time in DM, I'm just saying he won't play as much as he has been. Wilshere may also get game time there, so that's 4 players into 2 positions.

Yeah i agree with that. Perhaps Ramsey was preferred to them on the RW too. He gives alot to the team in either position i think. Yeah he definitely won't play as much as he has been, but still expect him to be first choice for the majority of matches

Yeah fair enough, it can appear worrying in terms of number of alternatives.

If a player has established themselves as essential in the manager's eyes, the number of alternatives isn't that important though. Maybe one way of thinking about it is Yaya. Like Ramsey he can play either in central midfield or attacking midfield and theoretically he has loads of competition, but he always plays.

Will vary, just as it has so far. Flamini and Arteta won't start together every game at CM. Ramsey is pretty much undroppable and has been played in all the big games, as players return in his less goal heavy positions on the wing, I expect him to start in the double pivot.

Also he still picks up the assists on the wings, so there's no position where he is actually a bad FPL option.

There will be occasions where Ramsey will be rested but Jack will be shunted on to the left wing, occasionally taking Santi's place. Imo Arteta and Flamini battle each other whereas Ramsey will play the majority of games alongside one of the two, he's first choice now.

Another question: does Theo make Giroud less appealing? Or has Wenger sworn off playing Walcott OOP/through the middle? If Giroud hits a rough patch that could be the answer, whereas Ramsey and the rest of the mids might offer more dimensions.

Just got in Coutinho for Michu, go for it. Him assisting both Suarez and Sturridge = assists galore and I think the Arsenal game showed he's much more willing to shoot this year so should get goals too. There will be occasions where he plays a perfect through ball only for one of SAS to square it to the other which will be annoying but Coutinho is class

      Ramsey- Flamini

      Arteta- Whilshere

All 4 work well, but Flamini and Wilshere won't start too many if the other two avoid fatigue

Walcott Ozil Cazorla first choice up front. Ros back up, Ramsey and Wilshere will appear if the injuries mount up

It's between Kos and Mert? Definitely sure you want to only restrict yourselves to Arsenal defenders? We're not generally bothered about clean sheets, especially now they matter little given the goals we've been scoring.

A is really a bet that in the next 10 GWs (January WC) Koscielny doesn't get himself sent off, imo. That's the major difference.

Am I the only one keeping Michu??

Fair enough only 2 goals this season compared to 6 goals at this point last season, but he has been playing a lot more frequently and with a break in this weeks Europa league he could be a nice differential for Stoke!

And if he still does bugger all then I will be shipping for Walcott after the internationals anyway

    Make sense at all??

Sometimes you have to cut your losses.

I'm a gigantic fan of Michu but I think he's facing issues at Swansea currently, he needs a different striker playing in front of him because Bony is just not working. Either they start to click and things get better or they don't and he's a waste of money.

Chances of Podolski possibly playing up top a bit for Arsenal? Lets face it, he's not exactly needed in the middle any more.

Well his preferred position is a forward, not a winger. Arsenal need a second forward to back up Giroud, Pod is a damn sight better than Bendtner. So why not?

Yeah I think this is what Wenger was thinking of when he declined to sign another CF. He sees Podolski as his backup CF. If Podolski wasn't injured, I think Podolski would have played most of Bendtner's minutes so far.

It's true Podolski wasn't totally impressive in his last spell at CF but it was pretty short, and the main motivation to play him at striker is that he has a heck of a shot.

He certainly does and there is a possibility that in some matches that may be of more use to them than Giroud. (And probably handier for Ozil who would get a few more assists.)

Podolski will be Giroud's back up. He can play left wing if Cazorla is out, but I can't see Wenger ever risking potential injuries to both players by starting both.
