An old friend grabbed the headlines this weekend as three red cards were handed out, while the Tightrope also welcomed a trio of new recruits to the rarefied atmosphere of their fourth yellow card.

No stranger to these pages (he even gets a mention in the first ever article in this series), Lee Cattermole racked up his eighth career red card on Saturday. The midfielder earned his fifth dismissal in just 88 games as a Sunderland player for a late and clumsy lunge on Hull City’s Ahmed Elmohamady – the Black Cats will now be without the combative ball-winner for the next three games as he sits out the midweek Capital One Cup tie against Southampton and upcoming league games against Manchester City and Stoke. Gus Poyet may turn to Craig Gardner as a replacement, though with four reds and 25 yellows in his last 83 league games he’s no stranger to a card or two either.

Joining Cattermole on the sidelines for the same three games will be his left-back colleague Andrea Dossena. Less than five minutes after the midfielder was sent packing, Dossena lost the ball and saw fit to recklessly jump into a tackle with David Meyler that left the former Sunderland man prostrate. The crimson flash duly followed, leaving Sunderland with a mountain to climb and some holes to fill until both men return for the Gameweek13 clash with Aston Villa.

Also of note in Sunderland’s nine-man loss to Hull – and highlighted post-match by a seething Gus Poyet – was a mis-timed, two footed, and off-the-ground challenge by the recently returned Robbie Brady late in the game. The referee, Andre Marriner, decided it merited only a yellow card, meaning it’s very unlikely Brady will see further action from the FA upon review of the incident.

Less likely to be reprieved is Fulham’s ever-present Sascha Riether, as his clear stamp on Adnan Januzaj during their loss to Manchester United went unpunished at the time. The right-back will now be subject to the full wrath of the suits at Soho Square – a three- match ban looks entirely likely for the German as we await more news.

Completion of the ban action this weekend came in the South Wales derby, with Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm given his marching orders for felling Frazier Campbell as he bore down on goal late in the game. For denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, Vorm will sit out just a single game for the Jacks who will need to call on the services of Gerhard Tremmel for the visit of Stoke. Vorm will presumably now play away in Europe on Thursday and then return to league action in Gameweek 12 at Fulham.

On to the tightrope now, and a busy weekend saw midfielders Antonio Valencia, Jon Walters and Paulinho all climb aboard the high wire to test their balancing skills. Eight players are all vying to follow Lucas Leiva in picking up a single match ban – Valencia now has cards in his last two league appearances, while Paulinho goes one better with three cards in three league games. He now takes pole position as he faces up to Newcastle next weekend.

I've benched almost no points this season. It's a very crafty strategy called making your squad so sh*t there's no points left for the bench.

We're not talking about mids here. Goal threat is similar for both Williams and Chico IMO. SO therefore I would go Williams for his baps.

You would go Chico for goal threat.

                        Agree to disagree 🙂

I agree that Chico is more of a goal threat, but could struggle against Stoke at corners.. No?

Williams could be rocking the bonus points against Stoke.

True. I just don't like doubling up usually. Bps probably safer, but it's only really a difference of a couple points, if i was taking a punt it would be Chico for the goal threat.

A lot of teams set up for one of their centre backs to get free. Chico might not be great at it, but its his goal to score.

                    You've said it yourself.

Doesn't necessarily mean he has the same tactical nous to position himself correctly and lose markers as well as Caulker can.

Maybe it's Williams now in this set up.

Ruins the balance of my team.

      Lukaku + Michu

      vs

      Rooney + 5ish mid.

Meaning I would have three mids priced at 5.2 and lower.

This way I can keep Lukaku for Palace and just shift Michu to another big hitter (Silva, Oscar, Coutinho, etc)

Nothing is obvious. Football is so unpredictable.

Getting someone in for a hit who everyone felt won't play the full 90 mins for another in form striker made no sense at that time. My comments were rational I feel.

Mignolet& Marshall vs. Boruc&4.0m – re-assessment after first 10 game weeks (and looking at the future fixtures)
I guess most of FFS community started season with one of the Mignolet/Boruc goalkeeper. Before the start of the season I posted my observations on this matter, especially on what I predict from goalkeeper combo and what will be their return of FPL pts in the first 10 game weeks (seems I was right :D). Looking back now it seems easy for those who picked Boruc (+4.0m combo) and saved money in the bank. But as equally I still stand to prove my point that Mignolet+Marshall is indeed a very good combo, especially so far:
    1. If you played these keepers by the home/away policy with picking easier opponent when both were home/away – you'd probably play Marshall only in game week 3 and 10. With this strategy you'd get 52 FPL points. Now looking at the GK score table, you'd be only 1 pt worse if you played Boruc or Howard for every game week so far (and equal on pts with Jaask).

    2. If we take a look at the fixtures for next 10 game weeks things get even better. Playing by home/away policy would read:
FUL, eve, hul, NOR, WHM/cpl, WBA, CAR, SOT, SUN, HUL
Yes, that's right – 8 games at home in the next 10.

    3. The other thing I want to point out is that many were skeptical that Mignolet would have number of saves reduced since he joined stronger team.
Looking back at the saves table, it reads: 1. Marshall 47, 2. Mignolet 39, 3. Szczesny 35.... 17. Boruc 25
So with Mignolet/Marshall combo you have 2 goalkeepers that have the highest number of saves so far – which are often translated into FPL points (+maybe baps).

    4. We may argue that Reds defense has underachieved so far and that we can only expect that things will get better.

    5. Many will think that goalkeeper (or goalkeepers) isn’t important in FPL. Well if we take a look at the overall FPL score table, it's very easy to see that this combo (or Boruc/Howard/Jaask) outscored almost every midfielder so far (Ramsey and Yaya are exceptions) and they've scored similar points as premium defenders. So think again.

The last thing I would like to point out is that if you intend to play Boruc for the next 10 games, it doesn't look so good (at least on the paper). Maybe Guzan and/or Ruddy seem like a good option? What is your opinion, which GK combo might be good? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I don't really like having Boruc any more, he has brought a great amount of points but it seems unlikely he will keep this up. I would quite like to swap him out for Begovic or Jaask as I reckon they will return more points over the rest of the season, for more of a differential with a small increase in price.

Never going to waste transfers on my keeper though, January WC time to change for me.

This is rather rational. Do not take a hit for a keeper, but if you're on WC, I also think that Boruc needs to go. It would be mad to expect similar amount of CS in the next 10 from SOT.

    Will I NEVER LEARN?

Made early transfer on Saturday, Ozil to Silva and Coleman to Williams. I would like to say that the excruciating PAIN of my kidney stones made me do it, but really just done to avoid drop/catch price rises.

Then Sunday Michu finally gives me the excuse to get rid, which I grab with both hands and a swap to Hazard.

All for a -8. Why do I now wish I had waited like any sensible normal person? But then again is the outcome really so bad?
