Having rolled out our recommendations for The Defence over the next four-to-six Gameweeks yesterday, we turn our attentions to the midfield area. Chelsea’s Brazilian playmaker arrives on our radar, Arsenal’s in-form duo continue to look prosperous options and Liverpool’s fit-again former Inter player makes a significant climb in this week’s refresh:

We hold onto David Silva at the top of the rankings as we await for news on the calf complaint that forced him off in the midweek Champions League win over CSKA Moscow. With attacking returns in three of the last four, the City playmaker has been key to the form that has seen Manuel Pellegrini’s rack up the goals in recent matches and with a trip to Sunderland followed by back-to-back home games against Spurs and Swansea, the fixtures remain in his favour. Yaya Toure is waiting in the wings to replace his team-mate in the rankings if he fails to make it, while Samir Nasri, with a goal or assist in six of his 10 appearances, remains a real under the radar option.

Oscar takes the place of Eden Hazard as our Chelsea midfielder of choice. Jose Mourinho remained somewhat cryptic as to the Belgian’s chances of starting against West Brom this weekend, making Oscar the more secure option – with four goals to his name already, the Brazilian faces just one of the top 10 in the next six (WBA, whm, SOT, sun, sto, CPL) and with Fernando Torres likely to return in three weeks, the uncertainty surrounding the Blues’ lone forward berth elevates their midfielders in our thinking.

Arsenal pair Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey both retain their positions within the top five in spite of a trip to Old Trafford this Sunday. The Welshman has now scored or assisted in all but one of the seven league games since Ozil’s arrival from Real Madrid and continued his relentless pursuit of goals with a vital winner in Dortmund last night – with three home games in four to follow the United clash, they could be poised for plenty more points, though we’re keeping an eye on Theo Walcott’s injury recovery, with Arsene Wenger expecting him back soon after the international break.

A return from a shoulder injury brings Philippe Coutinho immediately back into the reckoning. The Brazilian was handed a 45-minute run-out at the Emirates last Sunday but is expected to be handed his first start since Gameweek 4 at home to Fulham this weekend – with a front two of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge to feed, whether in a 3-4-1-2 or 4-4-2, Coutinho looks an enticing differential prospect and also has a trip to Hull and home games with Norwich and West Ham in the next five.

Stoke’s versatile new boy Marko Arnautovic climbs in this week’s refresh. The Austrian has been fielded up front and in “the hole” in recent matches but was moved to the left wing last weekend – at 5.5, he has notched twice in his last three in all competitions and has a trip to Swansea followed by three home games in four to help pick up the points.

A favourable run of fixtures keeps Ravel Morrison in the mix, though the West Ham budget midfielder is just one booking away from a single-match ban. Sam Allardyce’s side continue to struggle for goals but Morrison has scored two and assisted one of their last six – he has Norwich, Fulham and Palace in the next four.

A trip to Chelsea this weekend somewhat tempers our enthusiasm over Stephane Sessegnon, though the subsequent schedule hands West Brom three home games in four. With Morgan Amalfitano shifted to right-back last time out and Steve Clarke clearly uncertain over his preferred option for the lone forward role, the 6.6 priced Benin international looks the best route amongst the Baggies attacking options right now as he looks to kick on from last week’s assist at home to Palace.

With a goal or assist in four of the last six Gameweeks, Adam Lallana has the form but after this week’s home clash against Hull, the Southampton skipper has a tricky run of fixtures which could curtail his progress, Mauricio Pochettino’s side square up to Arsenal, Chelsea and City in the following four – certainly enough to deter any would-be suitors.

Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye has home games against Norwich and West Brom in the next three and, despite producing a goal or assist in four of the last six, has remained under the radar with a 3% ownership. Like Morrison, however, he’s a yellow card away from a one-match ban.

United youngster Adnan Januzaj has started three of the last four and looks good for another appearance in the XI after being rested from the midweek Champions League trip to Real Sociedad. He remains a real budget option at just 5.1, though with Arsenal, Spurs and Everton in the next four, David Moyes’ side have a tough task on their hands.

Further down, Robert Snodgrass will be hoping to recover from a head injury for Norwich’s home games against West Ham and Palace in the next three, while promoted pair Peter Whittingham and Robbie Brady are another couple of budget options to consider. Both have set-pieces and spot-kicks in their favour – Whittingham has Villa, Palace and a home game with West Brom in the next six, while Brady welcomes Palace and Stoke to the KC over the same period.

          Chester out isn't the worst call - Steve Bruce just now said he's only 50/50 for the Palace game after the international break, and after that there aren't too many games you'd want to play him in.

          But look at Southampton's fixtures beyond this week. Not pretty. Think about West Ham (Rat or Tomkins) or even Aston Villa who have very decent fixtures and are starting to string together some clean sheets (Ron Vlaar or Nathan Baker for a slightly risky punt).

    Salut, guys! I could need some help with trying to win me some money this weekend. It's a competition a norwegian newspaper has put up.
    They have put up 6 EPL matches and 6 championship matches, and then you have to put home win, draw, or away win of course.

    Here are the following, and my opinion:

    Norwich-West Ham = DRAW
    Liverpool-Fulham=HOME WIN
    Chelsea-West Brom= HOME WIN
    Crystal Palace-Everton= AWAY WIN
    Aston Villa-Cardiff= HOME WIN
    Southampton-Hull= HOME WIN

    Burnley-Bournemouth= HOME WIN
    Leicester-Nottingham Forest= HOME WIN
    Blackpool-Ipswich= HOME WIN
    Derby-Sheff Wed= DRAW
    Charlton-Leeds=DRAW
    Brighton-Blackburn=HOME WIN

    I would really appreciate your help, especially on Championship, cause I'm not really an expert at that league... 😛

      What are the winning conditions? I don't know much about Championship either, but I bet that a large majority will file in the exact same bets on the Premier League matches, which means that even if you get them right you won't win much anything. When there's money in play, you have to try and find the differential: results that most are not playing, but that are more likely than they seem.

    I'd give anything right now to be able to swap a midfield spot for a 4th striker spot. Remy looks so tempting, but hard to justify selling any of Rooney, Aguero and Suarez for him at this point in time.

            Ditching Rooney must have been tricky!

            I'm struggling with transfers this week - which of these would you go for?

            A) Michu -> Coutinho
            B) Michu -> Snodgrass
            C) Michu & Giroud -> Silva & Benteke
            D) Michu & Giroud -> Coutinho & Benteke
            E) Michu & Giroud -> Snodgrass & Benteke
            F) Michu & Nolan -> Snodgrass & Coutinho
            G) Michu & Nolan -> Snodgrass & Silva

            Can get Walcott for free next week if I do A, B or E this week.

            Boruc, Davis
            Baines, Terry, Toure, Clyne, Ward
            Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Nolan, Ravel
            Aguero, Suarez, Giroud

    Silva is a great player, in great form, playing for a great attacking side.

    But, I still think fixtures need to be considered - sun this week is nice, but then it's TOT, SWA, wba, sot - 4 pretty ricky fixtures from an attacking sense. Especially when you compare them to those of the likes of Coutinho, Snodgrass etc.

    Falling stars

    You know the format…Falling stars is a fictitious team/squad made up of players all of whom are cheaper than their opening GW values and collectively on, or less than, the original 100 mill budget, some for immediate start and others for the watch list, no rush to buy and awaiting Friday pressers…Nothing to see here for those with jerky knees.

    GW10 update…A very creditable 69 pts for last weeks team after auto subs, and once again beating the GW average of 52 pts…No Arsenal, No City and no bandwagons..not bad !!

    Plenty of column inches devoted this week to the burning question of Oscar or Hazard ..answered emphatically by Jose himself, but was the real answer neither as underlying stats show a distinctly lukewarm FPL Chelsea midfield throughout. Which brings me to this weeks theme…STATS !!..Season tickers, touches in the final third, ICT index and all the rest.. are they any good ?..

    For this weeks offering I have picked an entire team/squad based solely on statistics. Which stats we choose to use is open to debate ..but in this instance I’ve gone for goal attempts, pure and simple, for my front line and backline .

    I have chosen those “falling stars” defenders/keeper who will be playing the teams who have had fewest shots at goal in the last two GW’s..http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/3846/

    At the opposite end of the scale, and a broader stat, I have gone for the three highest performing “falling stars” strikers based solely on the number of attempts on goal this season to date.

    For the midfield my stat is broader still. Plenty of statistical analysis shows that the season’s formation is wide open and that the traditional 3-4-3 may well be the weakest of all. So to that end I have opted for a three man midfield with two “fresh” 9.0 mids to replace the current flops and a further two mids with excellent fixtures between them after the coming GW, Both mid priced “falling stars” are flying high on the public stats tables created by ITMT…http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/266/.. and Doosra…http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/..which demonstrate plenty of potential for points. The premiun mids are two returning from injury and with a proven past pedigree it’s time to say bye, bye to Oscar/Hazard and Michu and your underwhelming stats…onward and upward !

    GW11 team

    Tremmel(4.4) xxxx(3.9)

    Vlaar(4.4) Johnson(5.7) Demichelis(5.9) Williams(4.8b2) Huth(5.4)

    Santi Cazorla(9.6) Coutinho(8.5) Cabaye(6.2) Sessegnon (6.6b1) JWP(4.2b3)

    RVP(13.9 C) Benteke(8.8) Lambert(7.2)

    Team value 99,5 mill….Saving a whopping 3.5 mill on opening GW values.

    Just one top pick this week, and it’s a statistical one…JWP(4.2)..A full 90 mins at the weekend prompted a look at the comparison tool against RVP(13.8)…65%-35% in favour of JWP…Stats eh…you couldn’t make ‘em up !!

    Plenty of other options this week with Nergredo and Et’o amongst them but the stats have led me to where I am…A bombadment of shots from my forwards, a brand new midfield to replace the flops and a defence with enough time on their hands for an in game cuppa and a chat…but can the red side of Total fpl compete again with bright greens of Aguero, Ramsey and Suarez…?

    Hope you liked my picks (and theme) for the week and keep watching keep the fallers

        I agree Kalix..I just kinda stumbled on the idea. I'm sure Mark and Jonty and co would make a much better job of it than I do and it would act as a great antidote to knee jerking...In fact it would sit very nicely with the knee jerk article.

            Only what I've saved as posts...Thursday is a quiet day for me so I just look at the unfancied...find an angle...and see what I can come up with.

    Anyone punting on Coutinho this week? Think he is worth it short-term?

        I am tempted by the Fulham fixture since I am currently planning on only having Studge and Migs.

            If you have Suarez, maybe.

            I brought in Aguero last week but it hasn't quenched my thirst for Suarez's points.

      Finger hovering.
      Perfect fixture, but is he going to make an impact?
      Other safer gambles out there.

        I thought the same. Has potential, that's for sure.

        It's him, Ramey or Nolan for me. Gut says Nolan. Head says Ramsey. Cajones say Coutinho.
