Last week’s picks delivered a couple of clean sheets at the back, though Philippe Coutinho’s bench role at the Emirates and Fernando Torres’ blank away to Newcastle meant we failed to bring home attacking returns.

This week, with both Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero looking strong options in attack, we scour the PlayON price list and look for ways of saving budget for those intent on splashing the cash up front.

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a seasoned PlayON player, read on for our selection of this week’s targets…

Gameweek 11 Picks

Goalkeeper – Gerhard Tremmel
The German is set for a rare first-team outing due to Michel Vorm’s one-match suspension for Swansea’s home clash with Stoke this Sunday. Tremmel will set you back a mere 6.4m in this week’s PlayON player price list and offers a cut-price route into a defence that has conceded a single goal in the last three league matches. For those who decide to look elsewhere, City’s new number one Costel Pantilimon remains relatively cheap – he comes in at 7.5m ahead of the trip to out-of-sorts Sunderland and has chalked up two clean sheets in his last three appearances in all competitions.

Defender – James Collins
Back in contention after recovering from a hamstring injury, the Hammers centre-half is set to replace the stricken Winston Reid for Saturday’s visit to Norwich. Sam Allardyce’s side have conceded just a single goal on the road all season and with the Canaries expected to supply plenty of crosses into the visitors’ box, Collins’ clearances will benefit from the PlayON scoring matrix. Given that the home side have scored three times in the last seven Gameweeks, a clean sheet looks on the card for Collins, who looks a snip at 7.6m. Chelsea’s home game with West Brom looks enticing for Gary Cahill (8.1m) if he continues ahead of David Luiz, having replaced the Brazilian in the midweek Champions League win over Schalke, while Glen Johnson, at just 8.4m, is set to host Fulham at Anfield and has recovered from the illness that forced him out of last week’s trip to Arsenal.

Midfielder – Steven Pienaar
If we hadn’t opted for Philippe Coutinho last time around, he’d be this week’s midfield headline act. The Brazilian is available for a budget-friendly 7.0m and is poised for his first start since recovering from a shoulder injury at home to Fulham tomorrow. Instead, we look to the blue half of Merseyside for inspiration. Pienaar is priced at 8.5m for Everton’s trip to basement-dwellers Crystal Palace – the Eagles have yet to produce a single clean sheet all season and the South African has already found the net since his return from injury in mid-October. Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon is another cheap option on the flank. Priced at just 6.9m, he looks set for another start at home to Newcastle on Sunday after being rested from European duties in midweek.

Forward – Samuel Eto’o
Having bagged a brace in the midweek Champions League win over Schalke, the Chelsea forward welcomes West Brom to Stamford Bridge in fine form. With Fernando Torres sidelined due to a muscle injury, Eto’o, available for 10.3m, is set to retain the lone forward role against a Baggies side which shipped four to Liverpool on their previous road trip. Villa’s Christian Benteke comes in at 9.9m and is desperate to end his three-game drought at home to Cardiff tomorrow – both players look strong options for those unable to find the budget to bring in one, or both, of Suarez (12.1m) and Aguero (12.0m) for games against Fulham and Sunderland respectively.

How To Play

Doh. I did Michu to Silva for free before Michu went down to 8.8. But wait, I still have a FT, saved for an occasion just like this. Just gotta decide between Hazard and Ramsey. Currently on Hazard. Good idea? Currently have no Chelsea players but have Ozil..

I do like Nasri but have Aguero and not sure on Nasri long term or his pitch time. It's touch and go between Oscar and Hazard, just think Hazard has the extra quality.

Just before the international break in the sense that they each have one game with Hazard's being a far far better fixture. Then lots can change in two weeks so take the points on offer now. There's not a huge difference in fixtures until 14 December so I would go Hazard unless you think you're going to need the funds.

So I've been doing a bit of thinking about the FPL game as a whole. What got me thinking was what seems to me to be a very small pool of players that are considered acceptable to be included in your squad. Now I'm not suggesting everyone has exactly the same team, but I do believe there are very limited opportunities to finding decent differentials without missing out on points from players considered as part of the 'template' team.

The same names pop up again and again on this site, and rightly so. It seems we are able to accomodate many of the premium priced players without significantly affecting the quality of the rest of the team. I can't help but feel a little tired of seeing very similar teams with only 2 or 3 differences though. So I asked myself, how could the game be tweaked slightly in order to welcome a greater number of previously overlooked players into our squads?

My first thought was to perhaps add some sort of effect on the score a player receives which would be determined by the player's popularity. A very basic and not-too-well-thought-out example of this would be if two players achieve equal points in a GW in the current system but one has 5% ownership and the other has 35%, then the player with lower ownership would receive an extra point. Obviously a lot more thought would have to be put into it than that but it's a start. I believe this wouldn't affect the premium players' popularity too much, but at the same time it would encourage us to consider other alternatives more seriously.

Maybe the answer is simpler than that. Maybe a slight increase in player price could produce the same effect. Perhaps if we were only able to afford 2 or 3 premium players in a well balanced team, this would increase the variety of combinations for the remaining positions. Yes, there will always be 'must have' players and templates, but I'd like to see a greater number of players considered.

Maybe I'm trying to fix something isn't broken. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy FPL as much as the next guy, I just feel like it could be do with a little more variation and a little more thought into finding those differential gems. I'm interesting in hearing your views, even if I'm completely dismissed and told to do one.

With 3 million people it's a lottery week to week. If you can do well over the whole season the luck factor goes down and the tactical/judgement side rises so we get deserved winners.

Being able to get the right players at the right time rewards people who plan and research with stats like the member's section on here. People will always chase the points, so whatever system you have, the players earning the most will always gather a bigger % ownership.

We almost had your premium price thing with RVP, Suarez, Bale and Aguero, but with none of them playing or performing at the start and so many cheaper bargains coming up it almost seemed like you had to get in early on the bargains, because they were rising so fast.

It was a tough Bale or RVP choice for many pre-season.

this game is made for the masses... not just us nerds who take it a bit serious 🙂 if they made these type of rules the majority who play it "casually" may stop... just my thoughts, we'd like more variety in teams but lots just want big names in there

The only way to get a game where every player is an option is to have the prices for every single player spot on. This is impossible because players' form changes with the wind, as well as injuries. So there will always be players who are underpriced (some more than others = the template) and the rest. Since this is a site dedicated to finding those underpriced players, it isn't a surprise that the same names crop up again and again.

Yeh that's true, that was why I had the idea of returns being affected by a player's popularity. I admit this would significantly increase the complexity of the game and I'm not exactly sure how it would work but it would help to balance the appeal of underpriced players, if only slightly.

Thanks. A good point. Been considering that too.

For me, it goes like this: I use transfers because I want to bring some player in, and only secondarily because I want to get rid of someone. If value ain't dropping too much and I can't find a suiting player, I hold the transfer. Doesn't happen too often, though.

Right now I'm not sure if I want any midfielders in, as they're all crap. Except that Nasri's only problem has been rotation, which should be no problem now that Silva is injured. And he has a splendid fixture this GW, even if City ain't top away from home. So I'm really thinking about buying him this week. He doesn't seem like a must own to me though, but I already lost £0.2 in the wait for doing Mata -> Hazard, and have also already lost £0.2M in Michu's value now, and this is eating my future transfer possibilities.

True. Each of them could even chip in with a little attacking return. Thinking particularly of Coleman (against Palace) and Terry (relatively many shots inside the box recently). My current lineup is 5-2-3 with Ramsey and Hazard on midfield, and I'm perfectly happy with that.

What a mess. Still, I look at it this way - with Silva and Michu out, it kind of helps me. I've needed injuries to push me into spending points so now I'm poised to spend a few and hopefully carry out some surgery that will benefit me long-term.

In any event, I wouldn't be so worried about Silva's effect to Aguero. The striker partnership he's found with Negredo seems more important.

his good run started before Silva returned. Goal + assist at Plzen and 2 goals against ManU. First match after Silva's return, he drew blank against Bayern (only match in his last 9 in which he hasn't scored), but then continued his strong form. But it seems its more that he continued his form than that it started with Silva.

Honestly Mark i think it might see you rocket up the rankings. I created a test team a few weeks back to test out a theory of taking hits to bring in the most likely big scorers for the gameweek - ie not being averse to a hit or 2. For gameweek 7 starters this team is currently in the top 30 and averaging 72.5 points per gwk!

As I posted here before I think points hits are generally to be avoided - all things being equal. However, i think the most important thing to have a team capable of scoring good points (obviously!)

A well judged hit or two bring your team closer to the 'ideal' is probably no bad thing - certainly in the early stages of the season.

Yes, i think theres mileage in it. The key words are well judged obviously. But i dont think that has to be as hard as we might first think.

In this test team ive bought in Lukaku and Nasri this week. Neither will stay very long. Lukaku will go for Sturridge perhaps in gwk 14 and 15 - and maybe back again afterwards! Doesnt even seem to result in poor team value!

The other thing to bear in mind is that not all hits have to pay off. One of Nasri or Lukaku will likely fail but thats no problem - Nasri is out for Walcott regardless.

By which i mean 'ideal' for that gameweek. I think we all get too attached to our teams and a more brutal approach may bring dividends, perhaps just bringing in 1 or 2 players likely to do well each week does seem to have potential.

Well done for looking for the Silva lining (sorry) but it does show that the news out of City is as spurious as it was during the Mancini era. A few days ago the word was they were 'hopeful' he'd make Sunderland. Hard to believe they wouldn't have been able to spot a 4-week injury earlier. Not that City have any responsibility to tell us of course.
