Last week’s picks delivered a couple of clean sheets at the back, though Philippe Coutinho’s bench role at the Emirates and Fernando Torres’ blank away to Newcastle meant we failed to bring home attacking returns.

This week, with both Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero looking strong options in attack, we scour the PlayON price list and look for ways of saving budget for those intent on splashing the cash up front.

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a seasoned PlayON player, read on for our selection of this week’s targets…

Gameweek 11 Picks

Goalkeeper – Gerhard Tremmel
The German is set for a rare first-team outing due to Michel Vorm’s one-match suspension for Swansea’s home clash with Stoke this Sunday. Tremmel will set you back a mere 6.4m in this week’s PlayON player price list and offers a cut-price route into a defence that has conceded a single goal in the last three league matches. For those who decide to look elsewhere, City’s new number one Costel Pantilimon remains relatively cheap – he comes in at 7.5m ahead of the trip to out-of-sorts Sunderland and has chalked up two clean sheets in his last three appearances in all competitions.

Defender – James Collins
Back in contention after recovering from a hamstring injury, the Hammers centre-half is set to replace the stricken Winston Reid for Saturday’s visit to Norwich. Sam Allardyce’s side have conceded just a single goal on the road all season and with the Canaries expected to supply plenty of crosses into the visitors’ box, Collins’ clearances will benefit from the PlayON scoring matrix. Given that the home side have scored three times in the last seven Gameweeks, a clean sheet looks on the card for Collins, who looks a snip at 7.6m. Chelsea’s home game with West Brom looks enticing for Gary Cahill (8.1m) if he continues ahead of David Luiz, having replaced the Brazilian in the midweek Champions League win over Schalke, while Glen Johnson, at just 8.4m, is set to host Fulham at Anfield and has recovered from the illness that forced him out of last week’s trip to Arsenal.

Midfielder – Steven Pienaar
If we hadn’t opted for Philippe Coutinho last time around, he’d be this week’s midfield headline act. The Brazilian is available for a budget-friendly 7.0m and is poised for his first start since recovering from a shoulder injury at home to Fulham tomorrow. Instead, we look to the blue half of Merseyside for inspiration. Pienaar is priced at 8.5m for Everton’s trip to basement-dwellers Crystal Palace – the Eagles have yet to produce a single clean sheet all season and the South African has already found the net since his return from injury in mid-October. Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon is another cheap option on the flank. Priced at just 6.9m, he looks set for another start at home to Newcastle on Sunday after being rested from European duties in midweek.

Forward – Samuel Eto’o
Having bagged a brace in the midweek Champions League win over Schalke, the Chelsea forward welcomes West Brom to Stamford Bridge in fine form. With Fernando Torres sidelined due to a muscle injury, Eto’o, available for 10.3m, is set to retain the lone forward role against a Baggies side which shipped four to Liverpool on their previous road trip. Villa’s Christian Benteke comes in at 9.9m and is desperate to end his three-game drought at home to Cardiff tomorrow – both players look strong options for those unable to find the budget to bring in one, or both, of Suarez (12.1m) and Aguero (12.0m) for games against Fulham and Sunderland respectively.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly Fantasy football so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can keep changing your team right up to 2 hours before the first kick-off – 13.00 on Sat afternoon), you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and OptaJoe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 57% win rate to this point.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open and the prize pot is building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates to play for free bragging rights or for cash. Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly. PlayON is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

    Sooooo, City without Silva.

Scored 6 goals in 3 games without Silva so far (GWs 4-6) averaging 2 goals per game. Average with Silva is 3.1. The games included a 0-0 draw at Stoke, a 2-3 defeat to Villa... but also a 4-1 defeat of United.

In these 3 games Nasri got a goal and assist. Aguero got 2 goals, both against United.

Potentially big factor: Aguero didn't start both the 0-0 Stoke draw (subbed on late) and the 2-3 defeat to Villa. So he was missing for most of those two bad results.

Ill post this here and see what response it gets:

I dont think this is the year of the casual at all. I think we are beginning to see something ive suspected for quite some time. The plethora of fantasy football tips online, and increase in fantasy football popularity in general actually makes it harder overall to do well, particularly year on year.

The reason is very simple. The best potential players for the period ahead are usually identified correctly by these websites, doing all the hard work of taking into account all the many variables - position, fixtures, form, injury prone etc etc etc.

Many many people choose their teams from these players. Chances are now quite high that out of all the many of hundreds of thousands of teams using this info that some of them will be close to the theoretical 'ideal' of points scoring for any given period. This means there is a proportionally smaller chance of being able to use your own skill, judgement and analysis to make a difference.

Actually, this isnt a theory at all, im very certain it is now the case.

Anyway, im sure this wont get much credence on a fantasy football website...... 😀

I dunno, my brother and his friends all bought the likes of Yaya Toure because, and I quote, "he's tall and good in FIFA". I think it's more to do with the number of International breaks and WC coming up, the season is a bit topsy turvy even from a football perspective.

lol. To be honest, I should probably bring Toure in myself. He's scored too well for it to be a fluke and whilst im not convinced he's worth 9+ - the reality is, with Silva gone he could be a good bet for the next few..... (but somehow i cant quite bring myself to do it!)

Ah of course and his freekicks have been something special but it has been a strange season even just looking at the likes of midfielders not producing in the slightest. And of course the shift in bonus points. I agree however that the number of sites related to fantasy football and their usage has definitely jumped up. It's all a bit wacky at the moment 😀

Can just confirm this in my mini league at least. Last two years i've been one of few using ffs and other sites, ending up with a 100 point margin to number two in the league. This year pretty much everyone uses these sites and we're all within just a few points with very similiar teams.

Interesting - my problem is that I did better before websites like this came along, because i did a lot of what they do already - look at fixtures etc etc. I now find it hard to find any kind of area where i can definitively gain ground using skill and analysis. Otherwise i might as well just pick from the list and save myself the time (and heartache!)

I can't figure out a title yet to hot topic it....so stickied for now.

This is very similar to a lucky casuals or shrewd managers HT I did earlier in the week. I guess what your saying is that many more playes are becoming savvy this year.

I think this is partly true. Another reason we are doing badly is that there are more players in FPL this year...some 500,000 more are doing it so getting a good rank is tougher.

Another factor is that alot of players just get players on the front page of the transfer page....most seasons that fluctuates ...but this season cheap options such as Ramsey and Lovren are staying there and bringing in points each week, so that means while the pick starts off as casual...it ends up to their advantage.

There are of course some like me who got Ramsey and Yaya in after hours or research of the stats...honest 😉

I think the first page issue is the big one. There's not the same need to dig to find good value to spread across the team, especially with the heavy hitters in mid not performing. In previous seasons, no one could afford all of the heavy hitting mids because they were all 9+. Those who did their research and knew were to find value in the cheaper options had the edge, because they weren't necessarily there on the front page staring you in the face immediately. It took a bit of planning and a bit of knowledge.

This season you go to the mid and there's plenty of value immediately visible, there's no digging or analysis that needs to happen, all any one has to do is say "Oh, I'll have one of those." and their done.

That said, the season has been pretty topsy-turvey so far, and picks that should on paper rationally be good buys just aren't paying out. I'm definitely looking forward to things settling down and logic returning a bit.

When you actually look at the actual players that have benefited the 'casuals', you see a lack of information is actually benefiting them and therefore it is casualdom. The reason being that hardcore managers have actively chosen not to get popular players because they believe the stats doom them to fail. Yaya is the biggest culprit, Ramsey too. Brady is the other big one. Essentially you would have been better off not knowing the stats when it comes to the midfield.

The strikers have been consistent this year so casuals have done well there.

Essentially, the policy of 'buy the player that scored last week' has worked well this season for whatever reason. Not on the basis of stats.

As far as I'm concerned points all count the same no matter how they come so I don't look down on casuals. They're killing us in terms of the points/time invested ratio.

Exactly right Qubit and well said.

You can always still use your own judgement and skill to make decisions but the analysis on these websites is so much easier to filter for everyone. Time is of the esssence in our lives and no-one wants to use it trawling 10 different sites for a sceric of information that might be of use.

Yep, since websites like these have become popular Ive not scored well for some time. But i dont see the same players doing well year in year out so much any more (it happens but less likely) - ie its become more of a lottery.

Personally ive now stopped listening to most of what people on here say about any given player and ive gone back to making up my own mind (just like in the old days before fantasy football scout!) and using some stats to back up my decision making with. 🙂

Best way to do it. Take ownership of your own transfers. If they are 'sheepish' then so be it. If they are honest though you will still get many differentials throughout the year to make your team your own.

          Make sense?

But how much could have changed in last 7-8 months in terms of information sources (the time between last season and current)?

I think it's pattern of scoring players this season. Chasing last week's point is working. Ramsey scores - pick him; Yaya scores - pick him , Southampton defense - pick them all, Suarez hatty - pick him, aguero scores - pick him

Last season it was not this easy

lots of voices congregating (either the majoirty of just loud enough) create pools of acceptable players, that's the opportunity to find the golden rank riser, often a fallen-star. the time when benteke emerged last season was at a time when there were too many reliable strikers to bother with a new one, he then went and outdid all but van persie and suarez.
basically i think crowding can create opportunity too, same as taboo players, exploit the taboo, likes of bendtner in the past have been great short term picks, suarez before it was ok to own him, john terry is hardly a popular chap. etc etc.

Yes, i think this too. Ive got my eye on some players based on some analysis ive been doing based on shots in box etc etc. For example the numbers very much support Eto as an real option if he can get the game time. I have a few more, but considering the difficulty in gaining any kind of edge im reluctant to share! lol

eto'o just needs starts, he'll score. 32 year old eto'o is still one of the sharpest and quickest strikers in the league. imo losing hunger was his issue, not losing his legs. when you have won everything there is to win barring the world cup at least twice (includes AFCON) you would fully understand taking the money and going to russia, unfortunately it's also a clear sign of losing that fire. if anyone can re-install it it's mourinho, the manager who turned eto'o into one of the best defensive wingers somehow on some nights
