There’s just a few hours left before the deadline is upon us once again. All three of this week’s trio of overlooked alternatives are poised for a strong run of fixtures over the next few Gameweeks – a couple may appeal to those on the lookout for a Michu or David Silva replacement, whilst the third offers a real bargain option at the back…

Philippe Coutinho

A stand-out pre-season for Liverpool had Fantasy managers scrambling to find a place for the Brazilian after he finished the previous campaign in style. Coutinho looked poised to take the Premier League by storm but struggled to meet our expectations and by the time he limped out of the Gameweek 4 draw at Swansea, had failed to produce a single goal or assist from the left of a 4-3-3.

Handed a second-half sub role in last week’s loss at Arsenal, as Brendan Rodgers switched to a 4-4-2 in an attempt to stop the home side gaining an advantage on the flanks, Coutinho looks set to be unleashed from the start against struggling Fulham at Anfield tomorrow. It’s uncertain whether he will retain the left flank berth in a repeat of the formation utilised at the Emirates or whether Rodgers will bring the former Inter man into “the hole” – either way, though, Coutinho’s chances look enticing now that Luis Suarez is working in tandem with Daniel Sturridge in a front two.

Now down to 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League, Coutinho (who will set you back 7.8 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,) also has a trip to Hull and home games with Norwich and West Ham in the next five – a schedule which could belatedly see his season finally spring to life and justify summer show of faith.

Andre Schurrle

Surprisingly dropped to the bench for last week’s trip to Newcastle, the German’s stock rose without having to set foot on the St James’ Park turf. A hapless display by his team-mates allowed the Magpies to triumph 2-0 and with Jose Mourinho declaring post-match he made “11 mistakes”, it was no surprise to see Schurrle reinstated to the XI for the midweek Champions League clash with Schalke.

While he may not possess Juan Mata’s ability to pirouette or eye for a killer pass, Schurrle’s industry and willingness to track back, allied with a penchant for a long-range effort, makes him an ideal cog in Mourinho’s machine. The complacent nature of the Newcastle defeat may well be a turning point in Chelsea’s season – Mourinho admitted it was the first time his team’s performance has angered him since returning to the Bridge and Schurrle’s dependability could hand him the platform to nail down a regular role under the Special One.

At just 7.3 in FPL (8.0 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team), Schurrle’s schedule over the next six (WBA, whm, SOU, sun, sto, CPL) could well persuade those looking for a route into Mourinho’s attacking options over the next few matches.

Ron Vlaar

Ann unexpected upturn in resilience at Villa Park brings the Dutchman into consideration this week. Typically so porous at the back under Paul Lambert, Villa have ground out three clean sheets in the last six Gameweeks and Vlaar has been the major beneficiary, registering six bonus points across that trio of fixtures.

While the midlands outfit toil up top, Vlaar could be poised for further returns as Lambert’s side prepare for an eye-catching of games that could bring extra investment their way. Tomorrow’s home clash with Cardiff is followed by games against West Brom, Sunderland, Southampton and Fulham and Vlaar, at a mere 4.4 in FPL (5.2 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team,) may well be worth considering for those on the lookout for a real off-the-radar option.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Think Arsenal will struggle at Old Trafford, Giroud and Ozil doesn't seem sharp. And ManU will do what they can to win and get a clean sheet in front of their home crowd.

So playing both Januzaj and Rio.

There's been a lot of discussion on what defines a casual player and what doesn't. A couple of observations this week:

1, Some managers bringing in Silva after the wins against West Ham and Norwich, some even for a hit. Is this casual behavior, that is, not waiting for the mid week European games to complete to ensure there are no injuries to handle
2, Subsequent transferring out of Silva for a further hit leaving some managers with -8 even before the GW has started
3, A lot of the so called casual players, Ramsey, Yaya, Suarez, Aguero are owned by the overall leaders also

Of course there are financial issues driving the early transfer of Silva but surely any non-casual player wouldn't make a transfer if there were potential mid-week games for that player. Picking players at the top isn't casual behavior, the timing is what differentiates casuals from non casuals

Some took the risk, most of the time the player is fine. Michu to Silva may have been budget forced. I like to wait until games are over but some focus on team value.

I tend to agree that most of the time the player is fine and that finances drive the early transfer but football being a contact sport, it's always best to wait. Patience is key to success in fpl, 100 point GWs aren't needed every week, nice though they are

"Casual" players probably wouldn't have been aware there were mid week games.

The term Casual has become much over-used this year, mainly by disgruntled players who normally win their office MLs easily. Because some people play differently, it doesn't, imo, make them casual.

Well said ILF. Winning office MLs against people who aren't aware of all the ins and outs, or couldn't be bothered spending too much time on looking into it is a little hollow anyway.

Timing of transfers is more to do with attitude to risk and building for the future than whether someone is casual. Sometimes backfires but makes Saturday evenings more interesting.

I did.michu to Silva last week against Norwich for a hit. I'm the one who started the damn bandwagon before it existed and noone would listen. It annoys me that "regulars" now love Silva when they laughed at me before. Bloody casuals!

Disagree. I think many non-casual players took the risk (which ultimately didn't pay off) and did that transfer because of Silva's potential price-rise and Michu's certain fall and they realise the benefit of team value later in the season

Completely understand that approach and attitude to risk to preserve team value. For managers taking a hit to get him, surely that hit could have been postponed until after the mid week games? A straight 1 for 1 transfer is more understandable to beat the price changes. I frustratingly held Michu until yesterday, the frustrating bit being the 4 games before

I had Terry, Chico, Ozil, Ramsey, Cazorla, and Silva all playing midweek. Everyone normally comes through okay. Early transfers have probably saved me at least 1m in real value, so I will keep doing them knowing the risk.

I've been playing for 8 years and usually make my transfer at the start of the week for the price rise, knowing there could be a potential injury. You get the odd injured player but you end up with a stronger more valuable squad for the run-in at the end of the season so I've always finished strong.

Not sure I agree with this. Waiting until all games involving your inbound player is certainly a valid tactic and preferable in many cases. However managing your TV is also a valid tactic. Sometimes it pays to take the risk, obviously with risks come reward (increased TV that can be put to good use later) and also can backfire as it has done for many this week. In some cases you need to make the transfer early to afford it all and not be left missing out.
Neither approach makes a player casual
FYI I saved my ft this week

Been banging Nasri's drum all week as a Michu replacement, so I have to bring him in for Silva 😉

Went to bed last night all set on RVP(C). Because the rest of my team reads like a Differentials XI, should I switch to Sturridge? Thoughts please.

    Boruc
    Clyne Coleman Toure

    Sturridge Lukaku RVP

I'm erring towards him. Wish I had an explosive option like Aguero or Suarez. Arsenal look really solid defensively so I have real doubts about RVP(C) now.

Maybe just do a 4-point hit and get Suarez in...

Has the best matchup of this GW and hardly anyone is going to captain him even if they have him. Could be a huge differential this weekend!

that's pretty much why I held firm. After the awful display last week Jol will set out his stall for a 0-0 I would have thought, and Liverpool occasionally struggle with that kind of affair.

I think he will start based on last weeks game, where he really lightened things up. Often the case with young players is that manager will turn to experience vs stronger sides when he needs more dissipline in the side to keep a good side for defensive purposes.
