Dropping into a new Sunday evening time slot to leave tomorrow’s Scout Notes to analyse the day’s events, we take time to settle the nerves, clasp some hot milk and leaf through all the best community discussions of the last seven days.

Amongst the highlights on offer, we find the Aaron Ramsey “have” and “have nots” doing battle, whilst a double-dose of falling stars earmarks some overlooked assets that may just help break our template teams. As ever, we also catch up with the latest movement in the community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

The new time slot for our sift through the community affords us opportunity to squeeze in two of Wakey’s excellent falling stars posts. These are dedicated to those players who offer potential, despite their Fantasy Premier League price being in decline. While his Gameweek 10 selection saw Robin Van Persie deliver, in Gameweek 11 Wakey tipped Southampton’s Rickie Lambert, as well as West Brom’s Stephane Sessegnon who duly delivered.

With a whopping 35 votes at the time of writing Smarty Pants’ regular look at the top 1,000 Fantasy Premier League players is proving one of the most popular regular community posts. In his latest despatch he reveals that more than half of this elite group captained Luis Suarez in Gameweek 11 and eight out of ten own Sergio Aguero. Eye opening stuff.

Being able to spot targets that are genuinely due a goal or a monster points haul is crucial to Fantasy Football management, but which players are likely to offer a solid return on their promise over the coming weeks, asked Simsey. Yohan Cabaye, Leighton Baines and Jordan Henderson were among the names being bandied about.

Those who have failed to jump on the huge points hauls from the likes of Aaron Ramsey are likely to be desperately trying to claw back the deficit. There was plenty of support on offer for that particular minority as Liastro 3109’s called for Ramsey-less community members to raise their hands proudly, with the likes of Declan, Hyndman and Adam Le Fondle amongst those owning up. For some guidance on bridging the gap, TM245 asked what catch-up strategies are likely to be the most effective as Ryan urged caution in backing differentials, favouring the “if you can’t beat them join them” strategy.

Elsewhere, Fantasy Football’s magic moments came under focus. Who can forget the chaos of joy that followed Stephane Sessegnon’s 90th minute goal against Reading during a double Gameweek in the 2012/13 season? While that’s my personal favourite, there were plenty more offered up, including Aguero’s Premier League winning goal against QPR courtesy of Jack(Off) Attack.

With the Christmas fixture congestion looming, Keith was on hand to offer analysis and sew some seeds of doubt in the minds of Sergio Aguero owners, in particular. Looking ahead to the busy Premier League winter schedule he envisages considerable rotation on the horizon, suggesting that City’s Argentine is almost certain to be rested during December as matches arrive thick and fast.

Is the “casual” moniker being thrown far too freely at those who have had the foresight to draft in the likes of Ramsey and Yaya Toure? Our daily hot topic during the week on the issue sparked an interesting debate, with many still adamant that Fantasy managers with such players have benefited more from fortune than their own knowledge and cunning.

Nobody could accuse Evs of being casual, either in attire or in Fantasy Football habits. The original Welsh wonder was on hand this week to canvas the community on just how much time they spend tinkering with their lineups. The feedback ranged from Jordan and his hourly price checks, to the other extreme as the likes of United Nations confessed to Saturday morning captain crunches.

And finally Granville reared his cheeky chops to remind us how far Fantasy Football Scout and its community have come over the last six years. His link back to the site in 2007 reveals that the community was debating among other things the potential of Jason Koumas – even back then Mark loved his midfield differentials.

Community Leagues

Fifa Las Vegas’s tournament reaches Quarter final stage over Gameweeks 11 and 12. Somebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up will take on In Tommy We Trust, while Woeisme will square up to MB10. Epicfail and Champ received a bye into the semi-finals having come first and second in the league.

The leaders in Tommy We Trust’s All Things Leagues following Gameweek 10 are  Evs, Chilin Dude, Athletico Timbo, Crouch Potato, Chazza and Koneheads.  The second round draw of his cup competition is also live. Notable ties are HVT against Supersonic and Triggerlips against Accounting on Chris.

In HeelsOverHeads’s Worst To First – 2 Million + Club, for those with an overall rank below 2,00,000 in the first five game weeks, there are seven managers in the top 500,000. First place is currently occupied by Gokyo Locos, who has an overall rank of 204,508.

In Thomas’ and Peppie&Felix’s Friends Life competition Palace Ash and Peppie&Felix join Thomass, Daniel, Beric, Al Pacino and Koing Luther into the next round.

In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition 42 were knocked out, leaving 618 survivors. To find TM’s other league codes click here.

Meanwhile, The FFS UEFA FA Cup reached the First Round Proper this weekend. Going into Gameweek 11 just 11 teams from the first round had survived all five rounds. The biggest victory of the Fourth Round Qualifying came when aflickering‘s Concord Rangers beat Rukawa‘s Braintree Town by a margin of 98-41. The full fixtures can be found here.

Finally, a reminder that entry to the new Paddy Power Cup is still open and completely free. Click here to enter or check this article for more details.

Desperately trying not to break my FPL momentum (and captaincy streak) this week. Aguero Suarez Rooney have catapulted me out of the depths of 800k+ and I got lucky with Hazard this week and had a hunch on Ravel repaid.

Lousy fixtures for my team this week.

    Migs
    Nastasic Coleman Chester
    Hazard Coutinho Amalfitano Ramsey
    Suarez Rooney (C) Aguero

    Subs: Camp, Morrison Murner Clyne

Transfer a defender? Change the starting eleven? Different captain?

Availability of Nasty and Chester will obviously be the deciding factors on whether to use a transfer for a defender, having to play both of Murner and Clyne wouldn't be ideal. Only other thing that is up in the air for me would be whether Ravel has more chance of points against a leaky Chelsea than Amalfi does against the tighter (of late) Villa? Nice score this week!

Yeah the Nasty and Chester situations are the main puzzle. Both have decent shouts of a CS. It's tempting to jump ship on this error prone and Kompany - less City defence but I can't really ignore the chance of CS over the upcoming fixtures. And it's hardly like United and Chelsea defences are calling out for investment.

Ravel is a puzzling source of points, scoring from central midfield and usually some way out. I guess West Ham are more attacking at home but can't see west ham scoring too many. Might check Ravel's goal involvement though, perhaps he has good enough goal involvement to play

Amalfitano has been unlucky not to pick up assists in the last two games with Long hitting the post from his cross against Chelsea. Villa indeed seem to have tightened up though I wonder if they'll change shape back to 4-3-3 to accommodate Weimann and Agbonlahor if they recover over the international break. Amalfitano also has got his points against the best teams...

    Hey guys

I was away for the week so brought in silva for michu early in the week. That was a fail!!!!

Who do you think is the best replacement, money not really an issue.

I already have Ramsey, Ozil, Morrison & Barkely.

Plan to swap Ozil for Walcott when he's back.

Obviously I will wait until the last minute to buy this time.

I have an idea you could try to get to the bottom off...

Exactly how much is a FT (and therein, a single hit) worth?

Obviously we all accept 4pts as the standard answer, but is it really as simple as that?

Maybe you could explore that one... 😀

I actually think spending a free transfer isn't much different than taking a hit. If you don't have 2 free, then saving a transfer can effectively save you -4 next week anyway.

So most of the time I'd say ALL transfers cost -4 either now or in the future

You're probably right. Sometimes taking a hit is the right thing to do as it frees up the FT the following week (as well as whatever immediate advantages it brings), so that sort of makes the next week's FT worth 4 points effectively.

Was thinking about this myself. It's a very open question.

Since the utility of a transfer is in increasing your score, it's a function of the quality of the transfers available and your ability to pick the best ones. Plus these factors, at least the transfers available, will vary over the season, probably on a gw basis. The best you could hope for is some average over the season and it would differ between managers.

In short it appears at first glance uncertain and maybe devoid of meaning.

              my last hit was giroud(c) -> aguero(c)

So I conclude that hits are worth 36-4(-4) = 28 points

So basically, best thing to do is make 15 transfers a week. 😀

Absolutely agree... the last 2 weeks as the perfect example...

I used my 2FTs getting in Suarez after his GW9 hattrick, when I should have got Aguero in... then with the points I would have gained from the Aguero (c), I am then able to take the hit to get Suarez this week knowing full well that I am ahead of my points/per value curve of said FT... effectively giving another FT plus a surplus of points...

Whereas in reality, I chose Suarez cos I actually thought he could do the business at Arsenal (muppet that I am), only to watch Aguero destroy Norwich... now I am scrambling to get Aguero, and need to take a hit to do so... but this time I don't have those juicy (C) points from last week to back me up, so I'm eating into points that I can't really afford to give away, since I've already lost out on TWO huge (c) hauls...

With careful planning, I can make 30+ pts on the same single FT, or lose -4 overall...

That is a variance of 34+/- points from one set of GW transfers...

So this whole 4pts for a hit malarky is not as simple as you might first think IMO...

Yeah unlucky, we've seen some of the most outrageous returns on transfers in the last few weeks, it's been all about catching the explosions.

Your examples of spending multiple FTs in one gw also illustrate the ambiguity of relating a particular FT to a particular points change. Let's say I switched Giroud & Silva > Suarez & Nasri, doing the midfield downgrade to fund the striker upgrade. How do you calculate the value of an FT there? One FT was being spent to enable the other. The crudest solution I can think of is halving the profit between the FTs but is that really reflective of the value of a 'single FT' in isolation?

Great point, and IMO no, I don't see that as a fair representation of the value of a single FT since we are unable to measure it in isolation... it's impossible as the upgrading FT relies on, as you say, the other (downgrading) FT to make it possible...

So there seems to be a distortion effect on the value a single FT when you save one and combine them to use two FTs in a single GW...

The best way I can think to find a more accurate solution to each level of FT usage (1FT and 2FT) is retrospective in nature... at the end of the season calculate all the points data from every GW where 2FTs were used and find the average points profit/deficit... then calculate the points data from every GW where only one FT was used and find the average again and compare the two...

Would comparing the two serve to highlight a truer representation of the value of FT, or would it merely gauge only that individuals level of ability in making good transfer based decisions over the season within each subset of FT usage...?

This solution can apply to everyone, but the results would differ greatly from person to person, which brings me to the conclusion that finding the true value of a FT lies within the very fabric of a nature that we are trying to understand - the actual player himself...

Therefore, IMO the true value of a FT is a bespoke organism, caught in between a maelstrom of different user based variables - talent, skill, luck, knowledge etc...

The more I talk about this the more I realise how much I actually love this game and it's hidden qualities... 😀

haha just a thought of mine which is wad i feel when i take hits

a FT can worth many things..selling a player who is bound to lose 0.3m value with a player who rise 0.3m will mean a swing of 0.6m difference if u wait this same transfer the next week..and if tt player u sell never play/sub/never play well and the player u gets in score it will more than offset the points taken. a simple hit for giroud->suarez last week is a good example.

oso tt by taking a hit this wk u can actually save the transfer for next week if possible..giving u 2 ft the next next week. and even if u have more than enough money to absorb the rise/fall ultimately u are still spending more on the same player giving u less money to spend on others..

so in short if the player i want and is on a rise i will get him in asap so that i will not haf so much cash tied to a player

An excellent addition to this discussion... the dynamic of rising/falling value of players within the game is a huge factor when you are considering transfers...

When you intersect prices rises/falls with the quest to find the inherent value of a FT, we are faced with yet another problem...

How much value gained in a player over a set period of time (and/or the prevention of lost value in a player) will make up for the use of a FT?

Is this future benefit of increased team value (TV) in your team going to outweigh the disadvantages of spending a FT needlessly (or indeed a negative points hit) to chase such value in the first place?

What if, throughout the season, you focused more on objectively finding the best possible transfer each week that would be projected to give you the maximum return on your FT investment? Would this person be at a disadvantage to the player with less points but more TV?

Doesn't it seem logical that if this player was focused on selecting the best player each week for points, then the TV accumulation would take care of itself?

thanks for ur reply! ur response is insightful bringing to the issue of chasing bandwagons. agree completely on the part that selecting the best player each week for points will auto accumulate TV..form players will always have transfer ins to rise price.

though with situations lyk sturridge giroud they are all good players but even better players arrive result in price drops..it is where maybe u have to follow the bandwagon even w a hit (not too many imo if not it defeats the purpose) as there is a good chance that u gain more points and tv..or u can always buy back at a cheaper price.

personally will focus more on tv at the start of season..and only follow meaningful bandwagons..not going to chase it for the sake of chasing for tv or when ur own players are performing. but when things have to be done lyk my main players benched/injuried i will not hesitate to take hits and trying to get in rising price player if possible(even w/o good points at least i earn some cash..though rising player generally mean good form or with good fixture so i should be safe?)

the important of tv varies across the season imo..getting higher tv at the start will allow u to get the players u want easily and u have more weeks to enjoy the benefits..but this season maybe different as big mid not performing so a low tv team may actually be fine. so the effect of high tv strategy maybe lesser.

at this stage of the game will u rather be 50 points behind ur ML leader or 2m more selling value?

For me a points hit is always a gamble but a calculated one, this week I spent 4 doing Michu -> Silva, then after much consideration on Friday night did Silva to Hazard for another -4 and ended up better off points wise, team value wise and now have two weeks to mull over the next free transfer rather than worrying about shipping out a broken player falling in value. I would have had ravel off the bench for 8 plus the 4 point penalty but Hazard got me 13 so better off by 1 point, would have been even better if I had benched Barkley and played Ravel.

    Boruc Vorm

    Fonte Toure Rafael Rat Bradford

    Arnatovic Whittingham Ozil Y.Toure Hernandez

    Rooney Aguero Benteke

have a look at my team and advice me if i need to make some drastic changes or was this week a one off.

      Honestly I'd rather keep clyne.

you'll probably want him back once his fixtures recover in 4 gws time. I'd focus on making sure your squad can accommodate him on the bench for ars, che, MANC games.

              You want reasons:

              1. I own Ramsey.
              2. He looked "useless" of what I saw yesterday. 10.7m is expensive. Lot's of pathetic passes. His double digit scores were vs Nor and Stoke! Those teams are conceding for fun. Next up South, that have not conceded more then 1 goal all season and are 3pts off the summit of the PL log.Car(a) could be tricky. Ok Hull(h) looks good. Would I capt him? No. Suarez(c) vs Nor(h).

McAuley is overpriced imo. At that price I much prefer Kos/Mert/GJ. Given your other defenders though it probably makes sense to downgrade to a cheapie, and Rat is the best option there.

Can't say for sure, but Rodgers tends to reward players after good performances, so I can't see Agger or Skrtel getting dropped. Unless they revert to a back 3 (in which case Toure or Sakho will fight it out) I think Toure will almost certainly start on the bench.

    Harper, Mignolet
    Baines, Rat, Chico, Lovren, Chester
    Ramsey, Brady, Ozil, Oscar, Cowie
    Lukaku, Agüero , Suarez

    1FT 0.5 ITB

    Thinking either: -

    A. Baines+Lukaku >> Def 5.3 or less + Rooney for -4.
    B. Lukaku >> Remy for free.
