Dropping into a new Sunday evening time slot to leave tomorrow’s Scout Notes to analyse the day’s events, we take time to settle the nerves, clasp some hot milk and leaf through all the best community discussions of the last seven days.

Amongst the highlights on offer, we find the Aaron Ramsey “have” and “have nots” doing battle, whilst a double-dose of falling stars earmarks some overlooked assets that may just help break our template teams. As ever, we also catch up with the latest movement in the community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

The new time slot for our sift through the community affords us opportunity to squeeze in two of Wakey’s excellent falling stars posts. These are dedicated to those players who offer potential, despite their Fantasy Premier League price being in decline. While his Gameweek 10 selection saw Robin Van Persie deliver, in Gameweek 11 Wakey tipped Southampton’s Rickie Lambert, as well as West Brom’s Stephane Sessegnon who duly delivered.

With a whopping 35 votes at the time of writing Smarty Pants’ regular look at the top 1,000 Fantasy Premier League players is proving one of the most popular regular community posts. In his latest despatch he reveals that more than half of this elite group captained Luis Suarez in Gameweek 11 and eight out of ten own Sergio Aguero. Eye opening stuff.

Being able to spot targets that are genuinely due a goal or a monster points haul is crucial to Fantasy Football management, but which players are likely to offer a solid return on their promise over the coming weeks, asked Simsey. Yohan Cabaye, Leighton Baines and Jordan Henderson were among the names being bandied about.

Those who have failed to jump on the huge points hauls from the likes of Aaron Ramsey are likely to be desperately trying to claw back the deficit. There was plenty of support on offer for that particular minority as Liastro 3109’s called for Ramsey-less community members to raise their hands proudly, with the likes of Declan, Hyndman and Adam Le Fondle amongst those owning up. For some guidance on bridging the gap, TM245 asked what catch-up strategies are likely to be the most effective as Ryan urged caution in backing differentials, favouring the “if you can’t beat them join them” strategy.

Elsewhere, Fantasy Football’s magic moments came under focus. Who can forget the chaos of joy that followed Stephane Sessegnon’s 90th minute goal against Reading during a double Gameweek in the 2012/13 season? While that’s my personal favourite, there were plenty more offered up, including Aguero’s Premier League winning goal against QPR courtesy of Jack(Off) Attack.

With the Christmas fixture congestion looming, Keith was on hand to offer analysis and sew some seeds of doubt in the minds of Sergio Aguero owners, in particular. Looking ahead to the busy Premier League winter schedule he envisages considerable rotation on the horizon, suggesting that City’s Argentine is almost certain to be rested during December as matches arrive thick and fast.

Is the “casual” moniker being thrown far too freely at those who have had the foresight to draft in the likes of Ramsey and Yaya Toure? Our daily hot topic during the week on the issue sparked an interesting debate, with many still adamant that Fantasy managers with such players have benefited more from fortune than their own knowledge and cunning.

Nobody could accuse Evs of being casual, either in attire or in Fantasy Football habits. The original Welsh wonder was on hand this week to canvas the community on just how much time they spend tinkering with their lineups. The feedback ranged from Jordan and his hourly price checks, to the other extreme as the likes of United Nations confessed to Saturday morning captain crunches.

And finally Granville reared his cheeky chops to remind us how far Fantasy Football Scout and its community have come over the last six years. His link back to the site in 2007 reveals that the community was debating among other things the potential of Jason Koumas – even back then Mark loved his midfield differentials.

Community Leagues

Fifa Las Vegas’s tournament reaches Quarter final stage over Gameweeks 11 and 12. Somebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up will take on In Tommy We Trust, while Woeisme will square up to MB10. Epicfail and Champ received a bye into the semi-finals having come first and second in the league.

The leaders in Tommy We Trust’s All Things Leagues following Gameweek 10 are  Evs, Chilin Dude, Athletico Timbo, Crouch Potato, Chazza and Koneheads.  The second round draw of his cup competition is also live. Notable ties are HVT against Supersonic and Triggerlips against Accounting on Chris.

In HeelsOverHeads’s Worst To First – 2 Million + Club, for those with an overall rank below 2,00,000 in the first five game weeks, there are seven managers in the top 500,000. First place is currently occupied by Gokyo Locos, who has an overall rank of 204,508.

In Thomas’ and Peppie&Felix’s Friends Life competition Palace Ash and Peppie&Felix join Thomass, Daniel, Beric, Al Pacino and Koing Luther into the next round.

In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition 42 were knocked out, leaving 618 survivors. To find TM’s other league codes click here.

Meanwhile, The FFS UEFA FA Cup reached the First Round Proper this weekend. Going into Gameweek 11 just 11 teams from the first round had survived all five rounds. The biggest victory of the Fourth Round Qualifying came when aflickering‘s Concord Rangers beat Rukawa‘s Braintree Town by a margin of 98-41. The full fixtures can be found here.

Finally, a reminder that entry to the new Paddy Power Cup is still open and completely free. Click here to enter or check this article for more details.

So Jay Jaffa from goal.com seems to think like many on here.

"Michael Dawson Flop of the Match

Turned with consummate ease by Remy not once but twice, with the second occasion leading to the goal. Not in good form and surprising that he's still first-choice centre-back. Booked for a dreadful tackle on Sissoko.

    Younes Kaboul

Replaced the injured Chiriches at the break and should have drawn Spurs level. His prod at goal from inside the six-yard box was brilliantly saved by Krul though. Easily the best centre-back at Spurs and if fit should be starting every week."

Yep just seen it, hit the nail on the head in one sentence, it's all about the manager.un

So all that time put into FPL over the years goes towards increasing the value of our FT, really. Most of us play with a similar number of transfers.

That said for at least two seasons now I have followed a hits heavy strategy, almost trying to get round that problem by giving myself more chances! Although obviously I am punished harder for mistakes when taking a hit, so my judgment becomes even more important.

I think there is a wealth of information to be gathered from transfers. The trouble is separating the what from the chaff. Which variables are important and which just serve to hide the real information. I think if one of the script-writers on this site were to write a script to determine the average profit/loss from every transfer made by say the top 100k managers or something to get a good sample of the best managers.

Perhaps determine the average profit/loss for 1FT made, -4 with 1FT, -8 with 1FT etc as well as the same for 2FTs. May show trends of how much hits/FT/2FTs are worth on average. This only looks at the immediate impact of the transfers though, and it has longer term effects on your team than that.

Maybe if the average length of term a player is in a team for the top 100k managers will allow for an indication of lifetime gains for players by looking at the points gained from a transfer over the likely duration that said player will be in your team.

Even looking at GK/Def/Mid/Fwd transfers separately to see if a FT is worth a different amount depending on which position it is used in. You would think that a Fwd > Mid > Def > GK given their respective points output (perhaps not mids this season lol) would occur.

Then there's the effect of injuries in transfers, which are obviously going to be worth a greater amount than replacing a playing player as they are practically guaranteed 0 points for the foreseeable future.

I've changed my mind – this isn't hot topic worthy, it's PhD worthy 😀

I agree on the hit theory. You can do so much more with 2 FTs. Using 1 weekly for the sake of it isn't a great choice. Tend to find better results when you can shift the money around in the attacking positions.

I agree. I've come to the conclusion that to play well/keep up with form players, an average of 2 transfers /week is needed. It astounds me that some experienced managers are able to achieve high scores taking no hits, and I'd love to have their players instinct, however for us mere mortals it's a hit per week to keep up I reckon.

Sorry, realise this is not really on-subject to the post

Yeah that strategy does tend to generate better chances at recouping points...

So assuming that we are trying to assign a numeric value to the 2FTs you are using (and thus trying to find the value of a single FT), would you agree that combining the 2FTs together for greater flexibility in the market is increasing the value of the actual FTs themselves, or in other words, is it reducing the cost of a FT? Are these the same thing, in principle?

With this in mind, what happens when we make the wrong transfer decisions? Over the course of a season, are we each achieving our own balance in terms of how much we are able to make with a FT?

Will there ever be a full proof way to continue to to successfully increase the value of your FT? What needs to happen for this to work? Do we have to continue making the right decisions?

Or is it a case of that inherent value affording you better value with subsequent transfers, i.e. decreasing the cost of any future transfers by continually making the best choices...

A lot of questions in here, I certainly don't expect you to answer them all... just trying to brainstorm for ideas...

One of my favourite topics 🙂

Ive always found peoples views on hits quite amusing. Taking hits is often quoted as bad - the main evidence given to support this is that those finishing at the top usually have very few hits.

However, if you stop and think about it for a minute this is making too concrete a link between cause and effect. The goal of FPL is to finish with the most points from players scoring you points. Clearly if you can do this with less transfers you will incur less penalties. Hence for those that finish at the top, the transfers made is really a sign that they were closer to the ideal points scoring scenario with less transfers incurred.

Our goal each week should be to score the maximum number of points (obviously). If your team is quite a way removed from the logical ideal for that week (for example Suarez and Aguero both play at home against weak opposition and you have neither) then there is a good argument for spending points to bring them both in for example (this is clearly over simplifying but the point should be obvious).

Another related point is the risk of stagnating or always playing catch up. If your team is far from the 'ideal' then 1 transfer a week aint going to cut it. I think Mark has fallen in to this particular trap. In his shoes I would definitely have got in Suarez this week (as well as having Sturridge).

Finally taking hits could be viewed in gambling terms. An informed 'gamble' can pay off. Or more to the point, hopefully your success rate should outweigh any points incurred across the season as not all will pay off.

We should also try to figure out when not to gamble (perhaps when we're ahead of the game? ie if your last 4 have paid off?). I certainly think theres a case for being more reserved when the fixtures for the forthcoming gameweek dont look likely to throw up big scores (this one coming up might be a case in point).

I think what you (and me above) were discussing here is actually the value of hits and when to take them, not the value of a free transfer - although clearly related.

However, I think your last phrase makes a good point though. Maybe on weeks, as you say, "when the fixtures for the forthcoming gameweek dont look likely to throw up big scores" is the time to save a transfer, giving 2FT's for weeks where you could most benefit from them, making bigger scores?

Yes, its true that is what most of my ramblings were on about - but mainly because i actually believe the 2 to be inextricably linked. I prefer to think about it in terms of gaining the most points. How many transfers it takes me to get there is largely irrelevant - as long as I finish up points wise!

And yes, I think theres a lot to be said for timing your 'gambles' wisely. Hence saving a FT if possible. The power of 2FT is far greater than 2x 1FT (obviously)

        This is hugely insightful thinking...

I agree with you that we do misunderstand the dynamic at work when we attribute successful FPL players as the ones who have taken the least amount of hits (made the least amount of transfers) over the season... and automatically assert that this is the optimal strategy on how to play the game..

The problem I think we encounter when we align ourselves with this method of thinking is that we have to realise that we can't just take this raw data out of context and apply it to your own FPL strategy and expect it to work for us...

There are a lot of subtle and invisible forces at work here underneath this whole game at a deeper level, and when we begin to understand that we each have our own level of skill, depth of knowledge, good/bad karma, luck, etc that determines our reality and our own level of success in this game, only then will we come to the conclusion that there is no correct way to play this game... there are so many possible paths we can take to be the eventual winner of the game, neither more right or wrong than the other...

Wasn't expecting to go down the philisophical route, but it appears that i did...

I think this is an excellent addition to this discussion... the dynamic of rising/falling value of players within the game is a huge factor when you are considering transfers...

When you intersect prices rises/falls with the quest to find the inherent value of a FT, we are faced with yet another problem...

How much value gained in a player over a set period of time (and/or the prevention of lost value in a player) will make up for the use of a FT?

Is this future benefit of increased team value (TV) in your team going to outweigh the disadvantages of spending a FT needlessly (or indeed a negative points hit) to chase such value in the first place?

What if, throughout the season, you focused more on objectively finding the best possible transfer each week that would be projected to give you the maximum return on your FT investment? Would this person be at a disadvantage to the player with less points but more TV?

Doesn't it seem logical that if this player was focused on selecting the best player each week for points, then the TV accumulation would take care of itself?

Yes, TV will take care of itself:

Ive actually created a test team this year to test out my theories on transfers. It wont be limited to a particular number, but basically it is an exercise in bringing in those players who i believe will score best in the coming gameweek. I started in gwk 7 and am ranked 84 for players who started that week and have a team value of 103.9m!

Great thread..Simple for me...I'd sooner finish inside the top 100k and take a hit a week (hopefully better) than the top 10k with a few transfers...I just like playing the game rather than sitting on my hands.

Nicely put. It is a game, after all, might as well play to enjoy rather than depriving yourself of the pleasure. I still admire players who can get great results with no hits, it's just not as interesting a way to play for me

Well, personally, I don't see transfers as a one week thing. I personally like to see out the following 3 gameweeks, and compare the players that I have brought in against the ones that I have dumped. Also, value comes into play here too. There are gains and losses involved with the pricing, most of the times, you have gained value with your transfers, the points you've scored might not be too much (or might even be negative), but that doesn't take away the fact that you've gained value, which is bound to help you sometime during the season. I think it's very tough to actually quantify the value of a free transfer, but this is as close as I could get in estimating the quality of the free transfers I've made.

There are just too many variables at play here; DGWs, wildcard's, team rotation, that to put any number on it (even 4) would be dangerously naïve. For example if you used your free transfer then did Benteke->suarez for a hit, did the first transfer cost you 4 points or did the second benefit you by 30something and how do you weigh the value of each. It makes it impossible to predict an average cost/worth even with foresight.

Seeing as 1ft a week gives a negligible chance of having the ideal team (apart from when wildcarding), the true worth is generally based on your estimate of how many points the new player will exceed the old player by in the next few weeks minus 4. How long that time period should be and the difference in points is decided by you alone (to allow for rotations etc). This is fairly rational logic and if we were all capable/bothered to calculate such decisions I expect there would be a lot more transfers as few would see it as 'costing' 4 points for a hit.

I agree with Berbilly though it's very much a Phd level question to try and answer.

I think the fact that not one manager posting here advocating hits has a history of being consistently in the top 10k should tell everyone that as the verve used to sing "the hits hits don't work"

Ha fair point Dino, though perhaps that says those who advocate hits are usually less patient and lacking the self restraint to implement such strategies, when James brown calls "shall we hit it and quit", they rarely say "yeah".

I agree fully AT, the people who generally advocate and take hits on a regular basis are knee jerking and try and justify it by saying they get more value or the points will accumulate over time but in my experience this is simply not the case. There are certain situations of course that merit a hit but you still need to be lucky for them to pay off imo.

Realistically you have to aim for your hit to pay off in the week that you did it as the long term benefit could have easily been attained by delaying the transfer by one gw. The only time this is not applicable is when you have a multitude of injuries and out of form players with difficult fixtures in which case you might not be able to get around to bringing in said player for a few gw's thereby losing points in the meantime.

The difference between the ppg averages of players in similar price brackets is not all that great though so to get back 4pts could take well over 10 gw's. For example to swap a def on 3.8ppg to a def getting 4.2ppg would be very lucky indeed unless you are trading up in value and that hit would take the full 10 gw's to pay off. The same goes for mids and to a lesser extent possibly forwards who can really take advantage of good fixtures to increase their ppg averages.

Another aspect used to justify taking a hit is value and this would be the lowest of criteria for taking a hit imo as the extra money is not guaranteed to get you extra points over a season. The only time I will consider taking a hit for value purposes is if a player I have is going to drop rapidly and a player I want is going to rise rapidly over gw (usually worst over international gw's).

In short I don't advocate hits unless they are extremely well thought out and not vanity moves to make you feel better about your team for one gw.

Ps That said we all go against accepted logic from time to time and I have taken a hit myself already this week for Silva and Paulinho to Sessegnon and Cazorla which I feel ill about. Strap does knees down tight at the weekend and you should be able to minimise hits and increase your rank through good planning based on fixtures.

          Best of luck Dino

I particularly agree with the last sentence, all very interesting though!
I appreciate your wisdom Dino, and I'll bear in mind your second paragraph when thinking of hits. I don't agree though with the ppg theory as for example Lukaku has horrid fixtures and undoubtedly a much lower ppg than rooney in the next four, which skews things a bit. But the ultimate test as you say, should be in the next week's points.

Good luck to you too! AT 🙂

        I think he will start.

Already been training for a week, and now has 2 weeks more training without any international commitments. He'll want to play against his former team and SOT are a decent defensive outfit so Wenger will know we need our best team out to break them down.

i still dont have any Arsenal player

i am delighted with UTD win over Arsenal....cause when Wally gets back he should be nailed on cause he is so good and player who makes difference

    question is

    who to sell for him

    Haz or Couthino

manny will say Couthino i am sure , but he could be fpl gold very soon

Could is very vague, you can say that about anyone.

You said it yourself stats don't mean points so it's got to be him in fairness, you already have Suarez.

Coutinho has produced nothing in the games he has played this season. In fact in his whole career he has basically had half a good season at the top level.

Coutinho has potential for sure. Hazard needs to score goals due to the strikers not helping as much as Suarez/Sturridge.

I was attracted by Coutinho's stats too. But stats don't mean FPL Points always. Look at Paulinho/Townsend for example.

Why I did not go with Coutinho is because he has other players in the team (Suarez, Sturridge, Gerrard) who will get a fair share of goal and assists, especially Suarez. While Hazard doesn't have much competition, and right now, his only competition seems to be in Oscar. The strikers have been doing okayish, but they aren't as good as the ones that Liverpool have.

Hazard...great FPL pick long term but with one or two Chelsea mids picking up their game (Willian, Schurrle) his game time may not be as secure as we'd like...same for Oscar.

I spoke to some LFC fans during the summer and they reckoned Couthino wouldn't be consistent this season, so far their right.

    Which appeals most?

    a) Silva + Barkley > Walcott + Sess
    b) Silva + Lukaku > Rooney + Sess (or Gerrard)
    c) Silva + Lukaku > RVP + Snodgrass

RVP does seem to be in the groove.....not so sure about Ravel as he's on 4 yellows. Would almost certainly get the fifth if I get him in 😉

I'll keep playing Clyne i think although my defenders aren't great. Doubt many will sell Boruc. Benching works.

Keeping and benching Clyne probably. At that price he's well worth keeping. Same with Boruc, although he'll play every week unless I get another keeper.

Got Clyne & Shaw.... Thinking i will keep Clyne and sell Shaw before next GW....4.8m to spend so will either go for Williams from Swans or Rat....leaning towards Rat, perfect rotation with Clyne and had 11 crosses 😯

Am looking to sell Lovren as doubling up on him and Boruc isn't going to pay off anymore. Made 0.3 profit on him and can always get Clyne on the cheap post Xmas if Lovren's price doesn't drop.

All the cool kids going for Remy this week, and why not he's a great pick...But do we have much love for Bony and Fulham away ?...No Michu should see him get a full 90 and not the duffer we might think...10 goals for the season so far in all competitions is just one behind the current superstar that is Ramsey...any takers ?
