Nemanja Vidic is out of hospital after undergoing head scans for the concussion sustained in Sunday’s clash with Arsenal. Winston Reid reveals his ankle injury is worse than first feared. Pablo Zabaleta admits concerns over City’s defence, Seamus Coleman hails Roberto Martinez’ consistency of selection, while Tottenham’s Vlad Chiriches heads the international call-offs after being forced off with a broken nose against Newcastle:

Moyes Handed Vidic Boost

United have confirmed their skipper has been released from hospital after sustaining concussion in a clash with David De Gea during the weekend home win over Arsenal.

The Scout Says: Having recently recovered from a previous injury, Vidic has started the last two league games alongside Jonny Evans in the heart of the back-four, with David Moyes using Phil Jones in midfield against the Gunners prior to the Serbian’s half-time withdrawal. The 1-0 win saw United register their first clean sheet since Gameweek 4 in what has been a patchy run of performances at the back under Moyes – it’s no coincidence, though, that all three of their clean sheets have arrived in games Vidic has started, with the champions conceding in all of the three games he has missed. Upcoming games against Spurs and Everton could pose problems for the likes of Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney but with both sides toiling up top, United may well be set for an upturn in defensive resilience – with just under a fortnight to recover before the trip to Cardiff, Vidic is now down to 5.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though Evans, at 5.0, has now started five of the last six.

Reid Concern for Hammers

The West Ham centre-half has admitted to a radio station in his native New Zealand that his ankle injury is worse than first feared. Reports even suggest Reid may be out until the New Year with the problem, though the Hammers have yet to confirm this.

“There’s maybe a one per cent chance, if a miracle happens, but apart from that the injury is serious enough that it’s going to take a far longer time than two weeks.”

The Scout Says: Reid’s absence was immediately felt away to Norwich on Saturday evening. The Hammers had conceded once in five road trips but shipped three against a side that had taken the previous seven Gameweeks to accumulate the same number of goals – with six clean sheets in the opening 10, West Ham’s defence looked poised for investment ahead of some kind fixtures (Fulham, Palace and Sunderland in the next five) but Reid’s potential absence will undoubtedly affect their chances of picking up the points. Nonetheless, for those eyeing up their backline assets, James Collins has now dropped to 4.3 and would be set for an extended run in the XI if Reid is sidelined for any length of time.

Coleman Hails Toffees Resilience

The Everton right-back has talked up the defensive record than has seen his side register three successive clean sheets ahead of the upcoming Merseyside derby with Liverpool. Speaking to the club’s official website, Coleman reckons a consistency of selection has made the difference for the Toffees, who have now picked up six clean sheets thus far:

“It is (stability). The lads are great and are very loud with their communication. It’s important to keep a clean sheet and we did that. It’s also important to create chances and score goals and we didn’t do that, unfortunately, but it is a positive to keep a clean sheet. Maybe we have to had to rely on Tim a little bit in the last two games. He has been brilliant.”

The Scout Says: After just 11 Gameweeks, Roberto Martinez is now the only manager to name the same back-four and keeper in every league match. As a result of their resilience, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Coleman all sit inside the top six for FPL defenders while Tim Howard is number one for keepers but with Liverpool, United and Arsenal in the next four, many may decide to steer clear in the short-term until the fixtures pick up again around Gameweek 16.

Zabaleta Concerned Over City’s Defensive Frailties

The City defender admitted his side may struggle to challenge for the title if they continue to ship goals at the back. Sunday’s defeat at Sunderland means Manuel Pellegrini’s side have taken just four points from six games on their travels and sit six points off the summit, despite being the only side to win all of their home matches so far:

“I don’t know if it is just about our away form – when you look at the games we have played away, we have dominated all of them. But it is true we cannot keep a clean sheet, and when you play away you must defend much better, and try not to concede goals. It’s not happening, every time we play away. There is a long way to go and we have too many games to the end, but when you lose points like that it will be really difficult to fight for the title.”

The Scout Says: Zabaleta’s owners will be weighing up their options after he was dropped to the bench for the second time in the last four Gameweeks at the Stadium of Light. Introduced to the action with just 20 minutes, he picked up a single point for his endeavours and sits on just 40 points in the FPL standings – joint-20th for defenders. Certainly, a lack of consistency isn’t helping – Pellegrini fielded just one of the back-four that started the previous league game at home to Norwich as a result of their midweek Champions League exertions but with the likes of Hull equalling City’s four clean sheets at a cut-price rate, and Southampton and West Ham producing six apiece, it’s no surprise that Zabaleta has dropped 0.3 in price since Gameweek 8.

Kompany to Remain Sidelined

Zabaleta’s skipper looks likely to miss another three weeks with a thigh injury, according to new reports. Physio Lieven Messchalck has assessed Kompnay for the Belgian national side and, in an interview with Sky Sports, went on to elaborate:

“I think Vincent is going to be ready in several weeks. We will do everything we can to bring back Vincent in a good way for a long time. First of all he had a rupture, a tear into the abductor and then also he has bad luck with a small thing on the front side now, so it’s everything together. It’s not really so long, eight weeks is nothing in the time of injury, you must respect biology.’”

The Scout Says: Given that Kompany picked up the problem on October 5, an eight-week period would bring him up to November 30 – missing the Gameweek 12 clash against Spurs and placing question marks over the following week’s showdown with Swansea. If he misses both, he’d be back for a run of three away trips in four – a huge boost for Pellegrini, given the club’s woes on the road.

Chiriches Out for Romania

The international withdrawals are already underway, with Robbie Brady unsurprisingly pulling out of the Republic of Ireland squad. His compatriot, and Villa defender, Ciaran Clark, has already called off with a foot injury, while Tottenham’s Vlad Chiriches has been forced out of Romania’s crucial World Cup play-off against Greece with the injury that saw him withdrawn at the break against Newcastle.

After the Magpies defeat, Andre Villas-Boas had revealed:

“I think he broke his nose. He went to the hospital. He could have continued to play but it wouldn’t stop bleeding and I think that would have affected his concentration in the end.”

The Scout Says: While Brady’s owners have become somewhat accustomed to his ongoing hernia problems, Clark and Chiriches have only recently arrived on our radars. The Villa centre-half has been pivotal to the form that has helped his side register four clean sheets in seven and, at 4.5, has a kind run of fixtures to benefit further – with Ron Vlaar priced at just 4.4, though, many may opt for the Dutchman instead. Chiriches has established himself as part of the Tottenham back-four that has conceded just one goal in the last four Gameweeks and at 5.3, is certainly more budget-friendly than Jan Vertonghen or Kyle Walker for those eyeing up Villas-Boas’ defence. With City and United up next, though, any would-be suitors will likely hold fire on any potential transfers, providing he recuperates quickly.

At first, I kept enough in the bank for Walcott over Ramsey.. But that involved having Norwich Olsson and WBA Olsson instead of Evans and McAuley 😐

Rooney Aguero Suarez is a luxury for ppl who can afford it.. if it's compromising the rest of your team maybe you got to drop Rooney/Aguero.. that being said
Kos, Evans, Baker to Terry, GJ, Burner and you are set.. maybe keep boruc instead of gettin those keepers and upgrade JWP to Brady if fit

I wouldn't get on the Ramsey wagon is you are only doing it now. Face it, as soon as Walcott gets a double digit score you will want him.

I know you are a Arsenal fan, so it's tough. What about Snoddy(playing newc who has Debuchy susp...and then Cpal(h) in place of Ramsey?

Then Hazard->Walcott and spread the Ramsey saving around in defence?

Wouldn't get Speroni, even if rotation is good. Baker might be under threat with Luna back.

Rest looks good except maybe JWP who probably won't hold down his place for long.

JWP, Baker, Evans r not nailed on. Very risky going in the busy Christmas period. Also dont expect Krul to repeat his heroics week in week out, Newcastle concede too many shots in the box for my liking. Rest of the team looks good.

You only need a choice of two week in week out C choices..Play the fixtures for the third striker spot and put 2 or 3 mill elsewhere....Rooney is marginally the weaker of the three C choices and i'd personally always struggle to justify him as C choice over the other two (this week may be a rare exception oddly)

Your advices sound often good, though they are a bit exceptional, but I've been wondering whether you actually do well in the game. How is it going? And do you habitually finish close to the top?

Seems like you're sacrificing alot for that front line. I would drop Aguero or Rooney for Benteke keeping in mind rotation over December. With that, upgrade Ramsey.

Too light in midfield, and there are signs that the tide is turning to midfield again. Rooney and RVP will still dominate points for United, so maybe dropping Aguero will have to do. Use the money saved to upgrade where you see fit

mmm..Suarez could easily have stolen the golden boot from him last season had he not got the muchies against Chelsea. To justify a week in week out C pick RVP would have to outscore Suarez this season. I'm not sure he will. Also...last seasons BPS heavily favoured the clinical striker so RVP walked off with the max BPS on a regular basis...is that the same this time ?

Mixed reviews on HBA on Newcastle forum.

"I'd have Ben Arfa back in for this one. Norwich have a defence that we should be going after. We don't need to play the same way we have in the last two games."

"I would bring in Ben Arfa, unlike Chelsea and Tottenham who like to keep possession. We needed a more defensive line up for those two teams, Norwich aren't the sort of team who retain possession of the ball, so definitely have Hatem attacking them, especially as we are at home."

"(...)I can't see any point in taking the Ben Arfa "risk". True Norwich may be less of a threat but that doesn't equate to Ben Arfa returning to form"

Think I'm keeping and giving him a chance.

Am considering bringing him in as a short term punt for Barkley.
If he starts, might cause havoc in the next few games. Maybe, eager to prove his worth etc. etc.

If he starts - no doubt he could shake things up. Afraid Pardew may stick to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".. Remy, Cabaye etc in the France squad, an injury up front and he'll start. Wouldn't rush the transfer!

From my experience of lurking club forums for info (usually for indicators of a player start), most of them don't really know what their talking about.
Take it with a pinch of salt.

He hasn't been dropped just because of lack of defennsive work though, his attacking input has been very poor. He releases the ball too slowly, and he dribbles and loses the ball in stupid areas. Then when he is near the goal he has been shooting from crazy ranges. Gouffran has been one of their best players, so he wont be dropped, and Sissoko gives them loads of energy. I'd be surprised if Pardew reintroduced him.

I agree 100% percent, they both need to go. But is hard to know who i should replace them with at the moment. And since i can field a team next GW i think it might be smart to save the transfer and remove one or both of them after the next GW. It gives me a bit more leeway and the course of some players might be a bit more clear after the next GW.

            Thanks for the advice btw!

Anyone here from Munich or been to watch a Bayern home match?

Went to watch Dortmund at home last season, managed to land a few tickets from speaking to their official website via e-mail. No such luck with Bayern so far, too oversubscribed.

Any recommendations on a different way to try and get some tickets? Trying to avoid third party sellers (Viagogo etc) if at all possible.

I think it's too pricey to have that frontline, you'd have to compromise in other areas.

Please answer this one. I think with new BPs system, this is THE dilemma of this season.
        Ivan vs JT
        Pieters vs ShawX
        Evra vs Vidic

My little brain say both have one plus point but its just that which one is better. CBs are likely to get BP in case of CS(but even this became doubtful when Bain/Colem got 2 BP and Dist got none last week). FBs are likely to get assists when no CS i.e. Clyne last week. This is the reason i am going w.o Che def because i don't know which one to get and i'll hate myself if i got one and the other one outscore mine.

Saw an article a few weeks ago (think it was in The Guardian) which argued that the current level of statistical analysis - and how its used to judge and predict player performance - is akin to 19th century medicine when doctors still used leaches to cure disease.

We have all been praising Arsenals performance so far this season. loading up on players like giroud, ramsey, ozil, and preparing for walcott.

But seriously, why all the fuss?

      Arsenals Wins so far:

      Fulham
      Tottenham
      Sunderland
      Stoke
      Swansea
      West Brom
      Norwich
      Crystal Palace
      Liverpool

I can only see 2 teams in there where praise should be given, and I am a bit iffy about giving praise for the tottenham match.

In terms of Value, there is only one player worth getting from Arsenal and that is Ramsey.

      1) Ozil? Forget about it. 2 double digit hauls in 8 games for 10.6 ?!?! He craps his pants everytime he plays away from emirates stadium

      2) Walcott? Dont get me started. This site is full of people who think it is the return of the messiah, but lets be honest, he will take a few games to get back into form (if he does) and his first 4 games agaisnt AVL TOT SUN and FUL? one assist. joke. he has potential but wait a bit before putting him on your team.

      3) Giroud - good returns on average, sure, but definately doesnt compete for 1/3 striker spots. His returns are mostly based on the philosphy that "well nobody else is there as a forward so it has to be him who finishes" Either way, his haircut is ugly.

      4) All of Arsenal, goodluck with a team that lacks depth during the christmas season.

      Rant over

      thank you

        1) All mids have failed so far - Ozil is 2nd on PPG.

        2) Walcott's goals + assists last year were roughly the same as Bale's goals + assists.

        3) 5th on value, 6th on total score, 7th on PPG. Arguably the most consistent forward this season + his hair may be dodgy but have you seen his abs...

        4) Our bench when all are fit - Arteta, Wilshire, Rosicky, Oxlade-Chamberlin, Podolski, Monreal, Vermaelen... Not half bad!

          1) yes but at 10.6 , additional funds have better value upgrading a forward

          2) I faintly remember Michu doing well last year

          3) Yes he was consistent, vs bottom half teams, but there are much better options as I said

          4) on paper they are decent... On Paper. Vermaelen is a mess by the way. your decent subs are all... mids, Suprise!

With Man City highest goals scored in pl, plus unlike City the perform away from home. The also play all those teams again. Bear in mind whilsts Giroud is scoring someone has to assist him, plus someone has to be one the end of his assists. A team that lacks depth? You need to start studying squad sheets before posting such hogwash.

Whats the best current distribution of team value? Seeing alot of teams with Rooney, Suarez, Aguero frontlines which is currently almost £35 M on three player. I've got:

The main question I am pondering over, Is it worth transferring out Ozil to free up cash elsewhere, must consider that:
      1) I have no Chelsea coverage
      2) No Aguero
      3) Bought him at 10.1

I am sure many people or facing the some issue with complacency, it is difficult to lose that value and then want to re transfer Ozil in later on.

Do a "Scout weekly poll" on your home page near the captain one which asks a different question each week and then discuss the response in the scout cast. Make the question quite unusual though to provoke us to apply our grey matter but also in a format which allows a mulitple choice pick list.

With over 40% of the bonus points being doled out to defenders and big clubs showing the early signs of tightening their defenses, is it more worthwhile to invest in premium defenders than in premium midfielders?

This was posed early in the season, and then more goals game and big club defenses faltered, and a lot of people gave up on this idea to chase attacking points.

It isn't as exciting as investing in goal scorers, but it seems like the way to go to grind up through the ranks long as you have 2 or 3 captain options in your attacking force.

Why does the number of teams keep increasing each week? Is fantasy football becoming more popular, or is it just a few existing FPL managers regularly entering additional teams, perhaps in attempting to get the week's highest score? I think there were only about 2.6 million teams last year.

Rather than submitting a question, you could take a couple of the most interesting or most replied to of the Hot Topics each week. For me, these Hot Topics have been a great success this season.

I also agree with having special guests from the community as you did with Evs last year, not that any of us are quite hitting the heights that he did, but it was a really enjoyable episode to listen to.

For me, the part where you go through that various Scout Leagues is a bit unnecessary, as 99% of us don't care as it doesn't involve us etc, although I was a by miffed that my 2nd place in the FFS PlayON game wasn't mentioned recently :-).

I must admit to not being a great fan of the Full Jonty either, although I may be in the minority there.

Anyway, keep up the great work, it is much appreciated.

With all these questions about your use of stats, a better question I think would be:

How long on average do the two of you spend looking at stats, comparisons and the season ticker in the members area each week?

How frustrated are the members of the 'Contributors' league with their slow start?

Is the FFS staff taking a different approach to selecting their own teams or the 'Scout's' picks in order to make up ground or is ti business as usual?

my question is, will the premium forwards keep their consistency? over the previous 5 years we had the holy trinity of mids, torres, drogba, rooney, rvp all firing at different times, could the answer now be just to get aguero, rooney and suarez then shape the rest after? These three don't seem to show any signs of stopping, with it being a world cup year also this surely motivates players further to perform.

what happened in 2009-10 to the output of similar big hitters before the WC?

some stats masters like in tommy we trust could have a go at this one.

when is the next scoutcast? next thurs not this I presume.

In 2009-10, the most impressive big-hitter was Frank Lampard, with 284 points from 36 games (7.9 ppg). He finished with an amazing sequence of 13-7-2-16-28-2-3-7-18-10-16 in his last 11 matches.

Other successful big-hitters were Fabregas (214/27=7.9), Drogba (242/32=7.6), Rooney (224/32=7.0), van Persie (105/16=6.6), Torres (141/22=6.4) and Tevez (210/35=6.0).

I've got one question, but the remainder of my suggestions are more for weekly content.

Qu - does the panel think that it is feasible to run a front 3 of Suarez, Ageuro & RVP? Never short of a (c) option, and this is where the returns are. So it's a punt from now until the Jan W/C when it could be fixed.

      Weekly content:

      1. I'd like a deeper discussion of your thoughts on the players to bring in for the next few weeks. Transfer policy is the one thing we all have in common & it's a bit superficial and light at the moment. We all know what happened, and it's fine to be a bit miffed for a few mins, but it does go on too long when a more constructive discussion could be had. Perhaps this is where you can bring in the community member each week to discuss your thoughts & add in theirs.

      2. Discuss the members area data in a member's only pod. You are a business and need to get as many of us to upgrade as possible. Tease info in the main pod but then give us a second pod to look at members tables, the ticker etc. I know time is short, but this could be real food for thought for those of us who have shelled out.

      3. The Full Jonty does nothing for me. Again it's retrospective, and as such doesn't help anyone going forward.

In response to your q, i'm gonna run aguero roo suarez with Walcott haz ramsey, may as well up to jan barring inj

        1. I agree

        2. they did let on about snoddy, clearly his stats are going ballistic

        3. agree again, older podcasts did have a deeper analysis of why M+G were thinking about putting players in, such things as watching a live performance where data can be cast aside and gut feeling plays a part

rvp or roo capt will be a differential in my league. probably gonna hit lukaku to roo as it leaves money for benteke to aguero provided I do ozil to Walcott. seems to make sense to me.

My question is - have you considered a physical FFS community get-together?

I don't know the size of the community but given the activity and interest on the site I'm sure there would be many of us keen to make this happen, whether in London or elsewhere. Personally I would be happy to travel a reasonable distance (being based in Bucks) to meet, drink and chat with Mark, G G G Granville and the other legends on the site.

You guys do a sterling job. Please bring back The Prof and The Full Jonty. Or anything else that makes the podcast longer. 45 minutes a week is not enough!!

I think he's the most nailed on United centre back, looking at 80-90% likely to start.

Smalling at right back at the minute, Jones filling in just about everywhere, leaving Vidic and Rio fighting it out to start next to Jonny.

Vidic and Rio started the season together, I just think they're incapable of putting together a run of starts alongside each other anymore. Both played in defeats vs. City and Liverpool.

Evans has come back from his niggles and made one of the centre back positions his own.
