Robin Van Persie is one of three United players forced to withdraw from the upcoming internationals due to injury. Brad Guzan and Boaz Myhill are also out for the US and Wales respectively, Wojciech Szczesny picks up an ankle knock in training for Poland, while Roberto Martinez ponders handing Gerard Deulofeu a start in the upcoming Merseyside derby:

Van Persie Withdraws from Holland Squad

The United forward has pulled out of his nation’s upcoming pair of friendlies with Japan and Colombia due to the ongoing toe and groin issues that have curtailed his recent game time.

The Scout Says: Van Persie’s owners are unlikely to be too perturbed by yesterday’s news. Moyes has started him in only three of United’s last six matches in all competitions – the Dutchman has been named in the XI for league duties but his manager has turned to Javier Hernandez in cup competitions due to Van Persie’s persistent problems. With a fortnight’s rest between the win over former club Arsenal and the upcoming trip to Cardiff, Van Persie will have plenty time to recuperate as he looks to extend a streak which has now seen him score in each of the last four Gameweeks for the champions.

Carrick Achilles Worry for Moyes

The United boss has also seen Danny Welbeck and Michael Carrick withdraw from the England squad with injuries. Welbeck remains out with the knee problem that has limited his recent game time but Carrick, according to reports in the Telegraph, could potentially be out until Christmas with an Achilles complaint. Carrick is believed to have received injections earlier in the week in order to boost his chances of facing Cardiff in 11 days’ time but has now apparently undergone a small procedure to rectify a problem which has been troubling him for weeks. The Telegraph also claim a senior United official reckons the midfielder could be out for at least a month and up to six weeks, though the club have yet to officially confirm this.

The Scout Says: Having played all but one of United’s league games so far under David Moyes, Carrick’s influence in the middle of the park has been crucial at a time where the likes of new boy Marouane Fellaini and Tom Cleverley have struggled for form. Certainly, United have no obvious like-for-like replacement for Carrick, though with injuries lessening at the back, the knock-on effect could see Moyes decide to retain Phil Jones in the central midfield role he’s taken up over the last couple of matches, allowing Jonny Evans to continue alongside Nemanja Vidic in the heart of the back-four. Frustrating for Jones, then, at a time where he has went out of his way to indicate he is keen to nail down a regular role in central defence.

Guzan Worry for Lambert

The Villa keeper was forced to withdraw from the US squad yesterday due to an unspecified problem. Guzan was expected to play at least one of the upcoming friendlies against Scotland and Australia but his national team boss Jurgen Klinsmann would only say:

“There are some injury issues that now give other players the chance to step up.”

The Scout Says: With four clean sheets in the last seven Gameweeks, Guzan has been a key figure for Paul Lambert’s side – indeed, due to save points, the Villa stopper currently sits on 51 points, the same number as Spurs’ Hugo Lloris, despite the latter keeping out his opponents seven times in 10 appearances. Coming in at 5.0, Guzan has now moved 12 points clear of any team-mate thus far and with games against all of the bottom four in the next seven, could be poised for further defensive returns. Lambert will be sweating on his availability ahead of a derby trip to West Brom on Monday November 25 and could be forced to turn to Shay Given if Guzan is unavailable. With Ciaran Clark also out of international duty and fellow-regulars Gabby Agbonlahor, Andreas Weimann, Fabian Delph and Antonio Luna all missing the previous league match, the Villa boss has plenty injury concerns right now.

Myhill Out of Wales Squad

The West Brom keeper has also made his excuses and removed himself from the Wales squad to face Finland on Friday. Reports in the local press indicate Myhill has been struggling with Achilles and thumb problems and, prior to the weekend trip to Chelsea, was unable to train until last Friday due to the problems:

“I am going to need treatment on a couple of injuries I’ve picked up in recent weeks. I’ve not trained for a while and I’m glad for the rest because it means I can do some work in the gym with the physios. So the break has come at a good time for me. I was really struggling last week and I’m grateful to the medical staff for the help they’ve given me to get on the pitch.”

The Scout Says: With the home game against Villa still 12 days away, Myhill looks likely to be fit on time for the Hawthorns derby. The stopper was rumoured to be considering his international future under Chris Coleman after being dropped by the Wales boss last time around and, with Ben Foster still injured due to a foot problem, is clearly taking no chances for the visit of his bitter rivals. It’s uncertain when Foster will return, meaning Myhill – providing he recovers – could still be in the driving seat for a run which hands the Baggies four home games and a trip to Cardiff in the next six.

Martinez Talks Up Deulofeu Chances

The Everton boss has admitted he would have no qualms starting the on-loan Barcelona winger in the upcoming Merseyside derby. Martinez cited Deulofeu’s recent substitute appearance against Tottenham as a sign that he’s ready to make the step up to the first XI:

“It has surprised me how quickly he has adapted to the British game, and to the demands of the Premier League. He is fighting hard for his place. I would have no concerns about putting him in against Liverpool, no. When you are able to play against Jan Vertonghen, and to cope with that, then it shows you he is ready for anything.”

The Scout Says: Certainly, Martinez has been careful with the youngster’s game time so far and only started him in cup matches. Deulofeu has played almost 30 minutes or more in three of the last five league games as the Toffees boss gradually introduces him to the English top-flight but with Everton drawing blanks in each of the last two Gameweeks, Martinez may well decide to freshen up his first XI. Kevin Mirallas is the only midfielder to start every match for the Merseysiders so far but his game time has been cut short in recent weeks, with Martinez hauling him off for the young Spaniard – the Belgian looks the most likely to be at risk on the right, then, though it remains to be seen whether Martinez would hand Deulofeu his first league start in what will surely be a hectic match with Liverpool.

Szczesny Ankle Worry

The Arsenal keeper is reported to be a concern ahead of Poland’s game with Slovakia. Szczesny is believed to have picked up an ankle knock and failed to finish yesterday’s training session as a precautionary measure.

The Scout Says: Having accrued 48 points in the first 11 Gameweeks, Szczesny leads the way amongst Arsene Wenger’s backline options in the FPL standings so far. After a run of defensive blanks, the Gunners seem to have rediscovered their resilience and conceded just once in the last three league matches – with three home games and a trip to Cardiff in the next four, the Pole (who is the eighth top scoring keeper) could be set for further returns if, as expected, he recovers in time for the Gameweek 12 home clash against a Southampton side that have managed four goals in five road trips so far.

Oscar Settled in the Middle

Chelsea’s Brazilian playmaker has been discussing his season so far with the club’s official website. Oscar has revealed he feels more comfortable with his new central role in “the hole” under Jose Mourinho, having previously played on the right in the previous campaign:

“Last year I spent a lot of time on the wing, but this season, although I have played out wide, I’ve mainly been used in the middle. It gives me a bit more freedom to express myself but I know how to play in all those positions and I’m very happy with how it’s going so far. I’ve always been able to apply pressure in midfield, since my days in Brazil, that’s why I came to Europe so early. That helps me a lot, especially in England, because it’s a fast league so it benefits me. Being able to do that has made it easier to adjust to the nature of the Premier League.”

The Scout Says: With nine starts in the opening 11 Gameweeks, the Brazilian has been one of the Blues’ main men under Mourinho. Oscar’s shift to the middle has seen Juan Mata drift to the periphery of the Chelsea XI and seen the youngster score four times already – equalling his tally from 2012/13. Somewhat surprisingly, Oscar has failed to step up as a creative presence, though, and has failed to provide a single assist all season despite his guaranteed game time – Mata managed 34 over the previous two years in the same berth.

Any legs on this as a WC team? Team value is poor so have downgraded Rooney to Tekkers to even the cash out a bit...

    Mignolet - Harper
    Evans - Koscielny - Terry - Johnson - Baker
    Hazard - Ramsey - Sess - Ravel - JWP
    Aguero - Suarez - Benteke

Will alternate between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 depending on fixtures.

My original draft had Rooney and Walcott but defence was a lot weaker...

        Krul - Harper
        Kos - Rat - JOlsson - MOlsson - Baker
        Hazard - Walcott - Sess - Ravel - JWP
        Suarez - Aguero - Rooney

GJ to Rat, Baker to Olsson (Norwich are still decent CS shouts at home and have nice fixtures) and upgrade JWP, probably to Snodgrass.

If Snodgrass is out of you reach, maybe Sess to Cabaye and JWP to Amalfitano?

      Try a backline like this:
      Clyne, Rat, Terry, Burner, Baker

That should give you enough to get Rooney back...

      Play 3-4-3 including Ravel...

Rat and Clyne rotate, Terry and Ming rotate, 2 home and 2 away every week...

Captains sorted with Rooney + Aguero, with Suarez always an option

Forward is the area to invest so even you opt for Benteke now, you need the extra funds to prepare yourself to shift around him, Rooney, Sturridge, Giroud at certain point of this game.

Mignolet is over-priced. Never put money on GK is my golden rule of fantasy success for these many years.

Although Baker, Ravel and JWP are damn cheap, they are good starters in fantasy when the fixture right!

So, I will not include Evans coz he is not nailed yet, I will opt for $4.x defender so you can rotate him with the others. To maximize the power of rotation, I will downgrade Sess to the likes of Amalfitano or De Guzman, then you just need to pick the best 2 out of the 5 lesser players to start with each GW.

Now, you will have enough funds to alter your upfront in future.

Depends on how BR lines up the defence imo. Agger back solidifies them significantly but if he goes back to his 3 at the back routine there'll be goals.

This is my worry, that Wayne will be asked to return the favour now. Moyes has let him play more attacking and he clearly appreciates it, over the next few weeks it could mean Moyes asking Rooney to drop deep. Although that said he did still get a few nice assists from that position last season.

I do think Carrick is essential for Utd but that being said they've scored quite freely when he's not been on the pitch.

Moyes may even go 4-3-3 for a few games -

      Fellaini / Cleverly / Jones
      Rooney / Rvp / Kags

Is it okay to transfer a player in if you're going to bench him that week? I'm thinking of doing Moses -> R. Morrison, but, unless Brady is out, I can't see him starting over any of my front 7, which is as follows:

      Oscar, Ramsey, Brady, Cabaye,
      Rooney, Suárez, Agüero.

As you can see, I can't bench any of these guys. So what should I do? Should I buy Morrison and bench him this week, or should I save the FT and buy him next week, when I'll be actually playing him?

Get him when you need him. The only reason to consider it this week is if you are on a very tight budget and think he will rise above what you can afford. I'd still wait thouigh in this case.

If you've no other pressing transfers, and are definitely going to get him in next week, then normally I'd say yes, do it now, and get the price rises.

However, Morrison is on 4 yellows, so may be suspended for the following week. Save the FT.

Can we chat about Coutinho? His goal attempts per minute is 4th best from any position who have played 5 or more while his KPIs show improvement in all areas from last season when we were raving about him. He is comparable with golden boy Ramsey with more key passes, more goal attempts, more SiBs, more SoTs, more final third touches and has a share of set pieces. Bargain waiting to happen playing the in the hole or perennial waste of space for 8.5 mil?

It's a tricky one - I think he could be a good buy, but he does seem a little wasteful. 23 shots and 0 goals. 15 of those shots were from outside the box too - a bit Townsend esk...

It's a risk but I think I'm getting him this week. All the noises were that he was only just short for the United game, so 2 more weeks of training and no international travel makes me me think he'll start against his former club. This is the same issue that people didn't seem to appreciate with Paulinho, myself included. Coutinho is shooting but his shots have been poor. Either they'll be directly at the keeper (shots on target) or will be into the stands. If he can sort that then he is a good prospect but when he has played 445 minutes for a team like Liverpool in an attacking position and has yet to register a goal or assist I think there is something slightly amiss.

for his career he's averaged 1 in 7 goals in the league but in the last two and bit seasons that has come down to 1 in 4.9 including the 0 in 6. He has the capability to put it in the net?

I would never say he doesn't have the capability but I tend to be careful when judging on seasons gone by. How many players do we know with great goal records who this season have drifted? Soldado, Bony (now picking up a bit), Michu in particular is a good example as he has settled much like Coutinho. In fact I was looking at something interesting recently, Michu's decline in goal scoring started in the second half of last season meaning he had one really strong half a season until defenders had gotten more used to him. Coutinho had half a season in which he was very strong for Pool but perhaps towards the end of that half a season defenders began to get used to how he plays too so maybe now we're seeing a similar situation to the Michu one.

That's just a theory. My point though is that Coutinho, who I've always really liked, has to show some ability to put it in the net THIS season before being worthy of a punt imo.

Good points. Imo his 0 in 6 can be attributed to firstly injury giving him the "Rusty" excuse and secondly the fixtures haven't helped with him missing Pools best set. I also believe that the first four games for Pool were a bit false with Rodgers testing systems along with the lack of Suarez. now with Saurez taking up half the defence, the space Coutinho should see is mind boggling. in 142 minutes since his return and playing with Suarez, he has the most shots, 2nd for SiBs and the most on target for midfielders.

Guess it's a potential vs results debate

It is possible of course and there is an argument for altering team structure. But you're right, it comes down to potential vs production. While you may see his increase in SiB and having the most on target for midfielders what that suggests to me is that he has a plethora of chances inside the box which he shoots on target but the shots are either poorly executed or straight to the keeper (much like Paulinho). While I have no doubt about Coutinho's ability I feel it is best to watch carefully over the next while and assess how threatening he actually is.

I think gerrard is the better option. Injuries are behind him, nailed on for penalties, which should be frequent given their attacking ability and to use the technical term, one squirmy diver....add this to his free-kicks and general passing ability and you will see Gerrard near the 180 point mark this season!

I am tempted to agree, Stevie plays well with really quality players. Before Suarez it was Torres. I tend to wind up owning him at some point in a season and I could be owning him quite soon.

It's difficult to ascertain the potential regarding goal attempts. We've all seen Townsend and Paulinho cracking plenty in with next to no reward. SoTs are really the best indicator, but even then it's hard to know if the keeper was really troubled. Coutinho had 4 SoT v Fulham, 5 off, but can't recall if they were really telling efforts. I'm voting for perennial waste, for now.

I think Coutinho's a good case against over-reliance on statistics. Townsend's another. Eriksen yet another. Yes, they get in a lot of shots, but they rarely seriously threaten to score. You could choose to make a case that if a player's shooting a lot they have a higher chance of scoring. But the question is whether they actually look likely to score, which is why it's so important to watch matches rather than rely on statistics. Having said all that, Coutinho's in a team with so much attacking potential, so he'll get a few for sure. But I watch a fair few Liverpool games and I think he's overrated and overpriced. Personally I think Gerrard will end up scoring much more highly.

Next 2 are ok though (both at home - Merseyside derby (normally has goals) and Stoke (who often capitulate away).

The threat of him being replaced by Deulofeu is the biggest concern

Are Verthongen & Baines worth the combined 3.9m extra over Walker & Coleman?

To date V&B have scored 127 points, to W&C's 107 points...

So 3.9 for 20 points seems to be a waste of money to me in that a couple of goals of Walker & Coleman easily closes the gap.

Tough as it would then require you to show who else you would have got with the extra funds, and on it goes, tallying up this player vs that player etc, etc, etc....

20 points is a big difference in rank mind you.

I suppose it is - and that's after 10 games... extrapolating out for 38 games that quickly turns into 70-80 points... which maybe is worth 4m in budget?

All depends on how they do for the rest of the year I suppose.

Will be an interesting one to keep an eye on their respective points as the season progresses.

20 pts in 11 weeks could mean 69 pts in 38 weeks.

First, I won't use Walker to compare as he's only the 3rd best def in TOT. Should adopt Dawson for comparison.

Secondly, I will separate Vert and Baines to compare their cheaper alternative, coz there is no point to mix them together.

If considering the current price, Vert is $1.8 over Dawson, while Baines is $2.2 over Coleman.
If considering the pts scored, Vert is 12 pts more than Dawson, while Baines is 8 pts more than Coleman.

In such sense, Dawson to Vert is way better value than Coleman to Baines. If you are holding Walker, as Vert only costs $1.1 more, it will make even more sense to do the trade.

However, the Baines scenario is different. $2.2 only gave you 8 pts more in 11 GWs was bad in value. You will feel sorry to yourself if you lack this money to upgrade Sturridge to Suarez/Aguero or upgrade Giroud to Rooney.

        Just reading through...

So getting Lukaku out (for a hit) to either Rooney or Remy is nuts with the two upcoming fixture?

Lukaku had 1 shot in the last 2 games. Team not scoring. Liverpool strong this year and with Agger back is tougher defensively.

Remy got his goal scoring touch and better fixture compared to Lukaku's

        and Rooney is.. well Rooney.

        Am I missing something?
