Shane Long fires West Brom into a two-goal lead at the Hawthorns but the Baggies are denied a second successive home win in last night’s midlands derby. Karim El Ahmadi and Ashley Westwood grab the second-half goals as the visitors come from behind to take a share of the spoils – for Fantasy managers, though, it proved a frustrating night:

Long Plunders the Points
The Baggies forward fired both his side’s goals and picked up maximum bonus points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game to continue an upturn in form. Prior to Gameweek 11, Long had failed to find the net all season but a strike against Chelsea at the Bridge seems to have reinvigorated the Republic of Ireland star, as he turned in a stunning first-half display against his team’s bitter rivals. Having started the first three league fixtures, Long drifted onto the periphery of Steve Clarke’s first XI – the following six matches harvested just 60 minutes from the bench – but he now seems to have worked his way to the top of the pecking order for the lone forward role. Nicolas Anelka, Victor Anichebe and Matej Vydra now have their work cut out to earn game time in Clarke’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system, with Stephane Sessegnon seemingly nailed on in “the hole” behind Long. The fixtures remain in the Baggies favour, with Newcastle, Norwich, Cardiff and Hull in the next five but with our three forward slots at a premium, Long – despite a favourable 6.0 price tag – looks likely to remain a differential option, with a current ownership of 1%.

Brunt Ticking Over
When it comes to the West Brom midfield, our Fantasy plans have mainly concerned summer signings Sessegnon and Morgan Amalfitano, but the Baggies skipper is gradually making his mark. In a season blighted by niggling hamstring issues, Brunt managed just one start and three brief substitute appearances in the first nine Gameweeks but, similar to Long, has forced his way into the starting line-up over the last three league matches. With an assist in each of his two home appearances over that period, his delivery from the left is looking crucial to Clarke’s side – the Baggies have scored seven times in four games with Brunt in the XI, compared to seven strikes in eight without him. At 5.0, he’s the cheapest of Clarke’s attacking midfielders and looks set to continue on the left for the above-mentioned run of matches.

Villa’s Budget Midfield Possibilities
In recent weeks, Leandro Bacuna has caught the eye with his set-piece execution earning the Villa new boy increased investment. Utilised as a full-back, though, Bacuna’s classification as a midfielder hardly helps his Fantasy appeal, but last night saw a couple of Paul Lambert’s regulars throw their hats into the ring ahead of a kind run of fixtures. Karim El Ahmadi’s strike was his second of the season and, having started seven of the last eight, the 4.4 priced midfielder may appeal to those looking for a budget alternative – Villa now have Sunderland, Fulham, Stoke and Palace in the next six. Ashley Westwood’s leveller hogged the headlines and also has him blinking on Fantasy radars – at 4.9 he’s a little costlier than El Ahmadi, but is another secure starter.

Benteke’s Drought Continues
It’s five games without a goal now for the Villa forward after he drew yet another blank. Partnered by Libor Kozak in a 4-3-1-2 formation, Benteke continues to hint at a return to the form that produced four goals in the first four fixtures – he managed four attempts last night, more than any visiting player, but without success. Despite the slump, a home game against Sunderland this weekend could be just what he needs to resurrect his Fantasy campaign – with Gabby Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann climbing off the bench to signal their return from injury, a return to a 4-3-3 system against the Black Cats looks on the cards and, with their tails up after last night’s derby comeback, Lambert’s side will be optimistic Benteke can rediscover his eye for goal.

Well both will probably concede and southampton have conceded more than 1 goal only once this season whereas Dawson just shipped 6?! Oh and Clyne has attacking potential so it's not that obvious

Yeah, but Chelsea away or ManU at home, ManU playing an away match after important CL clash. It's as simple as that.

Dawson conceded 6 last round, yes, but it was at Etihad. That's different to any other match that a team plays during a premierleague season. Everybody concedes there, do not put too much weight on that. Spurs will not concede more than once against ManU. And I would be much more confident them keeping a clean sheet there than Clyne not conceding twice at SB.

depends on the rest of your squad kinda,
i'd ditch Roo, would use that extra roughly $3.0 elsewhere should it be needed. if not, by all means leave lukaku as rooney has been consistent and deserving of his pricetag

    Try again.

Here are a few simple rules to live by based on my experience of playing FPL. Whilst fads and tactics come and go, I think that these basic rules will stand everyone in good stead, plus answer about 1/3 of all questions on here very quickly. I bequeath to you all…

    The Rules:

    1.       Never settle for second best in any given position for any given team
e.g. is Sturridge a better pick than Suarez as he’s cheaper and will score almost as many points?
No, never was and never will be. This sort of thing happens season after season…..

    2.       Buy him when he starts scoring
e.g. should I get Walcott now or in a week’s time?Neither. Buy him when he starts scoring.

    3.       Never sell a player who’s scoring
e.g. should I sell Remy or Betenke?
Betenke, as Remy is scoring well

    4.       Don’t try and get clever. It never works
e.g. Nani has signed a new contract and is home to CPL next……
    Fail

    5.       Never get cute with the captaincy
e.g. Nani has signed a new contract and is home to CPL next……
    2 x Fail

    6.       Its never too late to swallow your pridee
    .g. Mr Aaron Ramsey Esq.

    7.       Who do you envy
?e.g. which player do you look at in a H2H  opponent’s team and think, “uh-oh”? Who do you see has scored on a matchday and think “not again”?Maybe you should buy them….

This is such a simple game, and its so easy to loose sight of that.

In practice ive always found that it just doesn't work like that within individual teams, due to a combination of psychology and the captaincy. I think arsenal is hard to call this year, but generally speaking the premium option is almost always the one you want in the long run

Agree with all apart from number 2. With walcott I believe it wud be best to acquire him before he starts scoring because pretty much as soon as he scores, loads will jump aboard and u can't gain as much as you could. It also becomes an essential transfer to make and there maybe other pressing matters in ure team like injuries/ suspensions so ure forced into a hit or not owning. Get the players u want in your team ASAP in my opinion. Worked fine with Suarez (who I picked up at 10.9) etc. Walcott is proven pedigree, I shall be getting him this week. Form is always a nice indicator.

When I see H2H teams with Yaya I'm not worried, I don't look at him as a player I want to own, but nevertheless he keeps scoring.

Rooney is a player who I dread like that, however bringing him in would break rule 3 - selling Lukaku, Suarez or Aguero is silly.

I think I agree with all of those points though, they seem like common sense, but not everyone follows them. I overlook some of them too sometimes

I wouldn't call somebody who's good at FPL "blessed with talent".
If you're blessed with talent you write a book, make an album or make millions playing sport - you don't foresee who might score a few goals every couple of weeks and form a nice defensive rotation.

Owning Benteke for the first GW was a good idea though, especially captaining him.

Dropping him after that was fine, but his first few GWs he was a great pick. A bargain at the end of last season too

You seem to be underestimating quite how much luck it takes to actually win this thing.

Skill might get you into the top 1000, but getting top 10 or higher requires serious luck, and all your transfers paying off, never getting freak injuries that necessitate hits, always getting the captaincy right, you might've noticed that most winners don't go on to finish top 10 again, even if the have the consistency for many top 5k finishes
