With the frantic festive period now behind us, we can finally take stock and assess the statistics over the last few matches. Having last looked at the data in Gameweek 17, we have three sets of matches to investigate – Arsenal’s midfield, Tottenham’s attack and United and City’s frontmen are all placed under the microscope this time around:

Best cheap midfield option?

I know this was a Daily Hot Topic last week but with another GW passed and many (including myself) wielding their WCs; why not discuss again. In my opinion these are the best options for less than 5.5 but feel free to reply with any I've missed:

Sterling: Always a chance for an assist or a sneaky goal when playing with Suarez and a promising young player but is a rotation threat especially when Sturridge returns.

Januzaj: As with Sterling, he is an exciting prospect but hasn't (and most likely won't) cement his spot. However, when he does feature, he has impressed and supplied assists consistently and could benefit from Untied's kind upcoming fixtures.

Whittingham: On set pieces and nailed on, he's a very safe fifth mid. Has nice home fixtures coming up too.

Puncheon: He may be only 4.9m but he's Puncheon above his weight (not really but wanted to include the pun). Has been involved in goals recently. and has good home fixtures but Palace are no goal scoring machines.

Redmond: Cheap and lively, he has potential for the odd assist. However, there is the threat of Pilkington when he comes back from injury.

Others: Barkley is another option but personally I'm not a fan as he's a rotation risk and quite inconsistent. Another cheapie is Livermore. Only setting you back 4.6m, he could be a sneaky option for those with little in the bank.

So, what are your opinions on the best cheap mid?

  Assaidi at Stoke for 4.7m is the one missing from the list in my opinion. He's ineligible this weekend for the game against Liverpool but has started six of the last seven and has 3 goals and two assists in that period.

Suarez-Aguero-RVP team providing they're all fit and playing in GW 24:

Boruc, Davis
Baines, MOlsson, Ward, Burner, Chester
Hazard Walcott Cabaye Mutch Ki
Suarez Aguero RVP

For those short on money you could go Coleman instead of Baines and maybe upgrade Mutch to Whitts.

- Boruc will hopefully be back in a month and has some decent fixtures. If not, you could get Marshall instead
- the 4 cheapie defenders rotate very well so you can confidently play 2 each week
- Mutch - Ki perfect rotation

Debuchy is out 3 games; Distin may be hurt and Cabaye might be a flash in the pan.

Would it be worth an 8 point hit to throw that group away and get Hazard, Metesacker, and Ward?

I know... it's WC time and this may be silly. It's a definite risk. I'm just wondering if it's a completely awful thought.

  If you are going to do those transfers then I would do them today and use the WC so you don't take a points hit.
  
  However, I would advise against WC unless your team needs major surgery.

    I think holding the WC until Aguero is ready is the right move. There is next to no one here who will not be taking a few hits to get him in if they don't have their WC.
    
    Hazard it exploding in price and my defense is in shambles. This could be a make or break move.

  Is Kun even fit? Bit harsh to leave him on the bench for 1-2 GWs considering his price. Maybe Negredo as a placeholder?
  
  Oscar's a good shout but you need Hazard imo. With no Lamps, he's on penalties too. Besides, Hazard is Mourinho's pet project mate, ignore at your peril.
  
  I'd downgrade Komp to Nastasic/Evans and upgrade Barkley to Hazard if possible.

    His twitter says he is pretty close to returning but I don't think I would roll this out until GW22/23 when Aguero is definitely fit.
    
    I think I can afford to leave out Hazard with my big defence and the fact he is owned by many and Oscar is my main differential.

  Silva still has pretty low ownership so perhaps look to get him and downgrade Remy for JRod or Hooper for example.
  
  You've got 3 premium defenders which I quite like imo and all attacking/set piece threats..
  
  Oscar could be a nice differential - will be interesting how Jose plays it after such a good sub cameo on new years day..

    Such a tough decision who scores more Remy and one of C/L/E or Rodriguez and Silva.
    
    I want the big defence as has always worked well for me post Jan, Oscar was doing so well for me early season then got injured and Chelsea had some tricky fixtures so Jose went with other options. but Oscar is still number 10 after NYD performance and his comments about Mata.

Who to captain next GW?

Rooney (SWA) Suarez (stk) Negredo (Ncfc) Wally (avl)

Newcastle got debuchy and collocini out so a bit tempted to captain Negredo, but Pellegrini seems to like subbing forwards early in games.

    Don't really care for any of those except aguero and benteke if he finally hits some form. Only idea I've had so far is Lukaku, Rooney, Barkley, Sterling and Ridgewell OUT for JRod, Aguero, Gerrard, Redmond(or other sub 4.6) and Clyne/Bardsley. But still not even a big fan of those moves either.

        Yeah we are in different situations. I have Sagna with 4 other rotating defenders, Walcott, silva and oscar in midfield with sterling/Barkley rotation, lukaku Rooney and Suarez up front. No one currently injured or suspended so my team is in pretty good shape. No transfers jumping out at me as of yet.

  Looks pretty solid although I would not double up on CRY in defence. You may also want to wait for news on Mutch injury as apparently he done his hamstring which usually means out for about 4-6 weeks.
