Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

Hello DZ!! I was hoping you guys could help me out here.

    Current team:

    Howard
    coleman, zabaleta, Bturner
    hazard, lallana, walcott, cabaye
    suarez, rooney, negredo

I have been contemplating WC this lot in the light of walcott's dreadful injury (good luck to the lad). After playing around for a bit, I have come up with this:

    Marshall, Mannone
    coleman, zabaleta, ward, Bturner, chester
    hazard, ozil, silva, lallana, dikgacoi
    suarez, rooney, adebayor

Zab and rooney >> nastasic and aguero later when aguero is fit.

I do not know if I am massively kneejerking and could save the WC for later or if I am blindly making these changes. So, I would appreciate it if you guys could take a look at it and give me some input.

    Cheers!

They had Henry then who was playing as a true #9.

With Messi and Rooney in the team, Cesc position is limited and his license to roam and being in a free role is limited.

No, Fergie also doesn't know what United needs. He ignored our need for a CM since 2008 when Hargo was clearly never going to be able to play again.

His way worked just fine for him. He neglected the side by signing wingers, strikers and defenders when we needed a center midfielder since Hargreaves was clearly never going to play at a top level again.

Some possible insights on Rooney situation:

"Moyes admitted he didn't know whether his injured duo of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie would return for the tie, as he again reserved special praise for another eye catching performance from Januzaj.

"You just needed to look at the performance of Adnan Januzaj tonight," added the United boss. "He was terrific and put in a great performance. *****Hopefully we will get these players back as they are big players for us. If we can get them back for the second leg, then that will be great.*****"

IMO he won't play against Swansea. Chelsea and 2nd leg of COC after that and more important.

I wouldn't risk either RVP or Rooney if they are carrying muscular injuries - especially after what happened with RVP. If they get injured for another 3-4 weeks, the season is over - COC still to play for and CL coming up.

But then I shudder to think of how we will get the win this weekend without either. Tough times.

Me neither from a United fan and FPL perspective. Could be up to his usual shenanigans....I wouldn't touch this United team at the moment for FPL - they can't even react to a loss with a half decent attacking performance.

I think that all could change with RVP back in the lineup and i'm willing to roll the dice and get him in. Of course if he isn't fit just yet I will have to wait for his return which should come soon one would imagine

Martin Atkinson pales in comparison to SAF. He made the team overachieve. We have a terrible squad. Much of the starting XI aren't good enough to start for any of the other top 6 teams, maybe even top 8 teams.

And United finished 4th the season before he took over and won the FA Cup the season before that.

I agree. The circumstances do explain why he is under a lot of pressure though.

Expectations are naturally higher for a team with such recent, prolonged success. So the comparison with former managers (who took over when manchester united were a smaller club, in a different era) don't really work IMO

Actually manu fans are being pretty patient compared to a lot of other clubs' fans

You don't have a single good defender.

Midfield is good (other then don't care for Eriksen)

RVP? He is hurt and probably won't return this weekend. Aguero is red flagged and probably won't return this weekend and Soldado?????

Plus you don't have Suarez. I really hope you are a troll. Because if you are serious then I would change almost everything about this team.

My wildcard is already active; so I have a few days to alter this train if there are anything I need to be concerned about:

    Marshall (Mannone)
    Terry, Koscielny, Distin (Chester, Parr)
    Hazard, Yaya, Ozil, Silva (Mutch)
    Suarez, Adebayor, Rodriguez

No money in the bank; which explains the gamble on Parr. :/

aguero can't really be replaced though because he is a captaincy option. When everyone buys aguero and he has a superior fix to suarez, you'll be itching to get him in!

          My WC midfield is:

Hazard, Ozil, Silva, Lallana, Januzaj (I will play januzaj over lallana for southampton's worst few fixtures)

I have 2 mil in the bank which aids the switch to aguero somewhat- you'd have more than that if you did yaya-lallana

How many of those goals will have Silva or Yaya assists? How many of those assist will not have Silva or Yaya getting an extra 2 points?

It's still an interesting gamble to take.

Yaya -> Lallana is not enough to get in Aguero. JRod is cheaper than Lallana and Ade is comparable. I effectively am still short a few million.

true if you're going to captain suarez every week then it could work if he does well on the days when people captain aguero. I'm just saying you won't be captaining silva or yaya - that's where the pain could come when aguero captains score big.

Last season I dropped from 1k to 6k in two gameweeks near the end of the season. Why? No RVP when he got a couple of hattricks!

No Baines or Coleman for me, they're both too expensive and i think Everton will slow down soon because they don't have great depth. They'll lose more games as a result. I'll not be having Silva either, just because i think there are better options in midfield.

Is it just me or all this United squad bashing becoming a poor excuse to blame this downslide?

Sure, it's a factor but let's keep in mind most of their first and second team are internationals. It's not as if they're league 1 level players (maybe the exception of Cleverley)

Besides, even if Utd got new players, most newbies in the PL take time to settle down (look at Spurs). Some don't even manage to settle down due to variety of reasons (Shinji).

Squad surely can't be the primary reason for such a downslide?

      No offense, it's just you.

The squad is not United quality. Most of the current starting XI isn't good enough to start at any other top 6 club.

The Glazers are stingy and the manager is out of his depth but the squad is VERY poor.

Take Liverpool. Besides Suarez, none of the other players are good enough to start at any other top 6 club too. You can make this case for most clubs outside Ars, Mci and Che.

Poor excuse imo. Glazers or Moyes - the primary reason is one of them. Part of the role of the manager is to get the best out of the players and not just doing ok with world class players.

I have explained myself plenty in the past and I'm bored of repeating. The squad is not United quality. We went from Ronaldo/Tevez/Hargreaves to retaining Giggs and Scholes and buying Valencia and Young and keeping a clearly not good enough Anderson and an inconsistent Nani. The squad is not good.

I've said that Moyes isn't a good manager and that the owners are stingy and not giving the management the money it needs to fix the team.

On top of it Fergie ignored the team's needs for 5 years. Yes he won in that time but it shouldn't distract from the point that the squad deteriorated and is subpar save for a few gems (Rooney, RVP, De Gea and now Januzaj).

We let players like Pogba and Ravel leave for the wrong reasons (like Fergie's pride) and sign youth wingers and defenders when our needs has been the center of the park since 2008.

At Liverpool, Sturridge, Coutinho, and Gerrard could walk into most other clubs.
At Tottenham, Eriksen, Lamela, Dembele, Vertonghen, Walker and Soldado (not being used right) could walk into most other clubs.
At Everton, Baines, Coleman, Barkley, Lukaku, and Deulofeu could walk into most other clubs.

              Happy? 😆

                  I agree, didn't say it was 🙂

we would not be in this situation if we had different owners and if Moyes had taken over in the end (which he might have given Ferguson's attempt to lure him prior to taking over at Preston) we might not be in this position right now.

Agree with you. It is poor strategy from the manager.

Amongst other things, Moyes always wanted players to play 'freely', leaving defense open to counterattack especially at home. Squad is weak, no doubt...but fergie won a title with this squad - Fellaini. In Moyes's defense, Van persie and rooney have together started only 3 or 4 times this season and Injuries cant be blamed on him.

Well, I said right at the start of the season: If you take out RVP and Rooney, Manu would be a midtable club. They then went and thrashed swansea and I felt a bit silly (But it was all RVP and Rooney!).

Anyway, now RVP is out and Rooney is struggling with injury, it is coming true.

Now, does that seem like an unfair assessment - removing the best players? Yes, but I think most of the top 6 rely less on their best players. Even Liverpool without suarez went top of the league. Chelsea have pretty much dropped mata who was their main man for two seasons and have a fluid selection process. City have had aguero and kompany out at times and still done well (except maybe defensively - but still comfortable top 4). Arsenal have been plagued with injuries and are top.

Does this come down to moyes? Partly, but not entirely. The reason fergie didn't make many big signings recently is probably down to the owners, IMO, and moyes will suffer the same constraints but with less power to force through a change.

Just wondering, if you can have ANY player as a punt - on GW 22 & GW 23, who will it be?

Unlimited budget, and it's a purely 1 week thing.

    For me
GW 22 is Yaya / Strurridge.
    GW 23 is RVP
