In his first foray into the transfer market since being installed as Sunderland manager, Gus Poyet snapped up former Bolton defender Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina. The 23-year-old arrives on loan until the end of the season as the Black Cats boss looks to bolster his backline in the Wearsiders’ bid to beat the drop:

With just a single league start and a couple of sub appearances to his name for the Italian outfit this term, Alonso is clearly relishing the chance to kick-start his career again. Speaking to the Sunderland official website, he admitted Poyet’s presence played a crucial role in his decision to return to the English top-flight:

“The head coach is giving me a very good opportunity and I’m just very happy to be here and now I’ll do my best to help the team. He’s very good for me. He speaks Spanish so I understand him very well and also he did great as a manager at Brighton – he played very good football. He has so many good experiences from his time at Chelsea and Tottenham – it’s great to work with someone with that much experience and I will try to learn as much as I can…It’s not the first time I’m going to play in the Premier League so I don’t think I need to get used to anything – I just will play. The stadium is great and also the fans – when I played here [with Bolton] the atmosphere was incredible.”

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Alonso played 39 times for the club’s B side and found the net on three occasions. The raiding left-back made just a single first-team appearance back in 2010, as a 90th minute substitute, before making his way to Bolton Wanderers for a fee in the region of £2.2m.

Tentatively used by the Trotters, Alonso made just nine appearances over two seasons in the Premier League, scoring once, before the club dropped into the Championship for the 2012/13 season. Finally handed a chance to nail down a regular role, he demonstrated an impressive attacking streak from the back and chipped in with four goals and a pair of assists over 26 league appearances. His displays saw the local press vote Alonso Bolton’s Player of the Year last term and persuaded Fiorentina to snap him up on a three-year deal.

As mentioned above, the 23-year-old has been afforded little opportunity to make an impact in Italy. With Manuel Pasqual firmly ahead of him in the Fiorentina left-back pecking order, he’s appeared just three times for the fourth-placed side in Serie A. On the international stage, Alonso has represented his native Spain at Under 19 level on four occasions.

The Prospects

Certainly, the Spaniard’s prospects of holding down a regular role look good. Poyet seems unconvinced by Andrea Dossena and has handed the former Liverpool defender just one start in the last six league games – Phil Bardsley has mainly been utilised on the left instead, with Andrej Celustka benefitting from game time on the opposite side of the back-four.

Speaking to the press upon completion of the deal, the Sunderland manager is clearly a fan of his new recruit:

“It’s a position we’ve been looking to strengthen and he’s a player we like a lot. I watch a lot of Spanish football and I saw him play for Real Madrid. When he joined Bolton, it surprised me. At Brighton, I was looking for a player in that position, but when he went to Fiorentina that interest stopped. However, I have always kept an eye on him and he became available again. It wasn’t easy convincing Fiorentina to let him come but he wanted to.”

Finally given clearance to make his debut last night, Alonso was immediately handed the left-back berth in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg win over United. His presence in defence allowed the versatile Bardsley to switch to his natural right-back position and, with John O’Shea fit to partner Wes Brown in the middle after recovering from a shoulder problem, Poyet’s selection may well prove to be his first-choice defence for the remainder of the season.

Having produced five clean sheets in the last 10 Gameweeks, the Wearsiders’ backline is certainly worthy of our consideration. The upcoming fixtures further their appeal – their remaining nine matches at the Stadium of Light (SOT, STO, HUL, WBA, CPL, WHM, EVE, CAR, SWA) suggest clean sheet returns could well be on the cards, with the likes of Cardiff offering a strong home/away partnership for those looking to rotate.

So far, Alonso has only been added to the Sky Sports game, at a price of 4.3, though he’s expected to come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). For those overlooking Vito Mannone between the sticks, Brown and Bardsley set you back 4.3 and 4.5 respectively in FPL. Given that Bardsley has already scored twice in 13 league appearances under Poyet, he looks the likeliest target for points at both ends of the pitch – his fellow full-back is likely to struggle to earn our attentions, then, though that may just change if he can replicate the attacking displays of last term at the Reebok.

    Currently got:

    Marshall, Mannone
    Coleman, Kos, Nasty, Ward, Chester
    Hazard, Yaya, Ozil, Eriksen, Barkley
    Suarez, Rooney, J-Rod

Very happy with my WC team BUT the question is, play Barkley or J-Rod this week?

JRod all day. Hes the only available first team strike we have (Osvaldo suspended, Lambert injured) so he'll likely get 90 mins playing up top which is his prefered position.....

Was swaying towards Barkley on the basis that most of my ML rivals have him, and they're playing catch-up, but there's every chance of J-Rod extending that lead and you've twisted my arm.

I was always more on the managers' side since it's gotten kind of ridiculous how many have been sacked (I think it was already 1/4 of premier league managers gone before Mackay), but this changes my thinking (a little)

I think the hard part is getting the job and signing the contract, once you've done that youre sorted as most managers seem to get paid out on their contract? That said it is stupid from chairman to bring somebody in and give them half a season to impress.....

So I'm putting back Negredo as my Rooney replacement. Pre WC so it's a punt.

Knee jerk much but he was there in the beginning of the week due to fixtures (injured backline Newcastle and home to Cardiff)

Will mean I can only get a midfielder up to 8.2m for Sterling replacement though.

Or maybe a punt at the back instead. Lolarov? 😉

It's just hard to tell how injured he really is, wish there was more info, Moyes is never any help. I just worry if I transfer him out and his does start, he could have a big game. They've just lost three, lost to Swansea and will have a point to prove (against Swansea). I could see this being their rebound match.

What are thoughts on doubling up on Chelsea midfield? I am aware that usually, one would avoid doubling up on midfield from a certain team, though 1 striker + 1 midfielder is more understandable.

But Chelsea is abit of a different animal aren't they? They have minimal point contribution from their strikers and the bulk of the teams points are in midfield.

That being said - Hazard & Oscar double up, too much?

I've had Oscar & Hazard for a good number of weeks, now. I was all set to ditch Oscar after his cameo appearances, but then he gets a big haul.
Generally, Hazard has been pretty consistent. Oscar not so much, but mostly due to game time and injury. If he nails down a starting spot (still a big IF) then I think a double-up could really work.

Spread your bets on other midfielders, Hazard is enough investment and the better option. Mata keeps saying he wants to stay also. Ozil, Silva, Cazorla other options. If Chelsea had an off wk your fantasy week would be in tatters!

Have Ozil Silva Hazard and Gerrard already - just wondering if it's worth going 3-5-2 and get Oscar on board for the next few weeks before Aguero returns.

I agree with Dribbler if you're spending that kind of points then you want certainty of starts. Hazzard although template is probably smartest.

Oscar's a great form pick. I've doubled up too. Even in games where he's benched, tends to do fine.

He's pretty nailed on for the foreseeable imo. Was only benched cos of injury and festive congestion.

That were my thoughts as well, that he was benched primarily cos of the injury and fixture congestion. Mata's petulance would have done him no favours though. He might be relatively nailed on, but def not 100%. Will have to take the odd benching on the chin.

I have Negredo also, he keeps doing the business, it could take aguero a month before he's back to his best.
What do you think of my team. Advice is welcome, and do i really need aguero, when i have Silva and Alvaro. am feeling positive about this side. Is Kolarov a rotaition risk, and city have 4 half tricky games, have another 0.2 free so 5.5 million still available.

davis is only temporary, and Mannone will leak few goals, they will be resurgent over the coming months, since i have signed him he's been raking in the points! Agree Kolarov is a risk, but he has big points in him if he starts. Who would be a better defender, already have hull coverage in Chester

    Ming

    Chester - Coleman - Clyne

    Walcott - ravel - toure - Barkley

    Rooney - Lukaku - Suarez

    Boruc - ward - bturner - Ramsey

Thinking Walcott to Ozil, but what else??? Thoughts appreciated!

I would definitely use the other FT. Ravel, Toure, and Rooney are all doubts this week, but your bench can't really pick up the slack. I'd play Burner ahead of Ward.
Depending how much you have to spend, Id transfer Ravel to a playable midfielder.

Budget of 6.7m - allows for Rooney -> Aguero when he's fit.

I have not made a transfer since December 28. Resisting making transfers is killing me. That said, I'm happy to have waited it out.

    I'm nearly settled on:
Walcott, Cabaye & GJohnson -> Silva, Eriksson & Koscielny (-4).

My Wildcard Team (too many injuries, had to take the WC option) -

    0.0 itb

    Marshall, Mannone

    Ward, Bardsley, Chester, Coleman, Koscielny

    Hazard, Lallana, Yaya, Ozil,

    Suarez, Lukaku, Rodriguez

My current 4.6 is Ravel Morrison. West Ham have good fixtures but are playing terrible. Any options in that price range?

Should I do Yaya to Silva?

    Any other glaring errors?

3 for fixtures and form. Negredo is knee jerk imo. Before last night, everyone was booting him out. He's still a good call though, just that with 2 away games, might look to JRod to fill the gap, bolster midfield for 2-3 games.

Having completed the standard Walcott > Ozil move with the FT for the upcoming GW, relying on some good news out of both Newcastle & Man Utd camps - looking to hold the WC for at least another GW

The below side ok to get me through another GW?

    Ruddy
    Mertesacker Clyne Bardsley
    Silva Cabaye* Ozil Hazard(vc)
    Rooney* Suarez(c) Lukaku

    Vorm* Chester Ward Pozuelo

Right choice in playing Bardsley (FUL away) over either Chester (CHE home) or Ward (TOT away)?

Ha! That was my initial reaction to Toure's injury also. 'There goes the Silva differential!' - with the amount of WCers this GW... If Toure's injury is worse than expected, Toure > Silva would be the most logical

Although, anticipating that it'll be quite a minor issue. A week out - at most, for Toure

I'm pretty max out with this team as is. If I wanted to mess with keepers them someone has to go. Hazard could become Oscar but I tried that once before and it was a disaster. Ozil --> Santi could work if he could become Santi from last season. RVP is my ticket to victory

Not bad at all. Burner could fit at the third cheap spot, and Palace/Hull/Cardiff rotation (picking 1/3) looks solid.
Another idea (see below) is to ditch Ozil (who for is an open question). The funds could be used to upgrade JRod or the defence.
