In his first foray into the transfer market since being installed as Sunderland manager, Gus Poyet snapped up former Bolton defender Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina. The 23-year-old arrives on loan until the end of the season as the Black Cats boss looks to bolster his backline in the Wearsiders’ bid to beat the drop:

With just a single league start and a couple of sub appearances to his name for the Italian outfit this term, Alonso is clearly relishing the chance to kick-start his career again. Speaking to the Sunderland official website, he admitted Poyet’s presence played a crucial role in his decision to return to the English top-flight:

“The head coach is giving me a very good opportunity and I’m just very happy to be here and now I’ll do my best to help the team. He’s very good for me. He speaks Spanish so I understand him very well and also he did great as a manager at Brighton – he played very good football. He has so many good experiences from his time at Chelsea and Tottenham – it’s great to work with someone with that much experience and I will try to learn as much as I can…It’s not the first time I’m going to play in the Premier League so I don’t think I need to get used to anything – I just will play. The stadium is great and also the fans – when I played here [with Bolton] the atmosphere was incredible.”

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Alonso played 39 times for the club’s B side and found the net on three occasions. The raiding left-back made just a single first-team appearance back in 2010, as a 90th minute substitute, before making his way to Bolton Wanderers for a fee in the region of £2.2m.

Tentatively used by the Trotters, Alonso made just nine appearances over two seasons in the Premier League, scoring once, before the club dropped into the Championship for the 2012/13 season. Finally handed a chance to nail down a regular role, he demonstrated an impressive attacking streak from the back and chipped in with four goals and a pair of assists over 26 league appearances. His displays saw the local press vote Alonso Bolton’s Player of the Year last term and persuaded Fiorentina to snap him up on a three-year deal.

As mentioned above, the 23-year-old has been afforded little opportunity to make an impact in Italy. With Manuel Pasqual firmly ahead of him in the Fiorentina left-back pecking order, he’s appeared just three times for the fourth-placed side in Serie A. On the international stage, Alonso has represented his native Spain at Under 19 level on four occasions.

The Prospects

Certainly, the Spaniard’s prospects of holding down a regular role look good. Poyet seems unconvinced by Andrea Dossena and has handed the former Liverpool defender just one start in the last six league games – Phil Bardsley has mainly been utilised on the left instead, with Andrej Celustka benefitting from game time on the opposite side of the back-four.

Speaking to the press upon completion of the deal, the Sunderland manager is clearly a fan of his new recruit:

“It’s a position we’ve been looking to strengthen and he’s a player we like a lot. I watch a lot of Spanish football and I saw him play for Real Madrid. When he joined Bolton, it surprised me. At Brighton, I was looking for a player in that position, but when he went to Fiorentina that interest stopped. However, I have always kept an eye on him and he became available again. It wasn’t easy convincing Fiorentina to let him come but he wanted to.”

Finally given clearance to make his debut last night, Alonso was immediately handed the left-back berth in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg win over United. His presence in defence allowed the versatile Bardsley to switch to his natural right-back position and, with John O’Shea fit to partner Wes Brown in the middle after recovering from a shoulder problem, Poyet’s selection may well prove to be his first-choice defence for the remainder of the season.

Having produced five clean sheets in the last 10 Gameweeks, the Wearsiders’ backline is certainly worthy of our consideration. The upcoming fixtures further their appeal – their remaining nine matches at the Stadium of Light (SOT, STO, HUL, WBA, CPL, WHM, EVE, CAR, SWA) suggest clean sheet returns could well be on the cards, with the likes of Cardiff offering a strong home/away partnership for those looking to rotate.

So far, Alonso has only been added to the Sky Sports game, at a price of 4.3, though he’s expected to come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). For those overlooking Vito Mannone between the sticks, Brown and Bardsley set you back 4.3 and 4.5 respectively in FPL. Given that Bardsley has already scored twice in 13 league appearances under Poyet, he looks the likeliest target for points at both ends of the pitch – his fellow full-back is likely to struggle to earn our attentions, then, though that may just change if he can replicate the attacking displays of last term at the Reebok.

Posted this in the morning but got mixed responses so thought I'd try again tonight seeing as I've typed it out.

    RVP WC drafts?

Following on from Jonty's comment about looking at potential RVP WC drafts for later in the month in case he is back, it may me wonder what a draft like that would look like and what your opinions are on this topic.

With Suarez & Aguero basically the most 'essential' of the rest of the players and Walcott's injury dealing a blow to 'premium midfielders', would it have to be a SARvP team then?

    Example:

    Mannone, 4.0
    Kosc*, Coleman*, Ward, Chester, Burner
    Silva, Hazard, Ramsey, Puncheon**, Livermore**
    RVP, Suarez, Aguero

*Could be any other mid-price/expensive mids depending on your budget.
**Could be any other rotating mids depending on your budget.

Alternatively can get rid of Silva for Lallana/Eriksen, have only the 1 premium MF and upgrade the weaker MFers or a defender and play 4-3-3 more often like this:

    Mannone, 4.0
    Coleman, Kosc, AZPI***, CLYNE****, Burner
    Hazard, Ramsey, LALLANA, Puncheon, Livermore
    RVP, Suarez, Aguero

***Again could be Evans, Nasty, etc.
****Could remain Ward with one of the cheap MFers upgraded to Whittingham, Barkley, etc.

    CONCLUSION

RVP could be a huge differential come the end of the month as we have already seen him carry United last season there's not much to suggest he can't do it again. It is just a thought but I was wondering what you have to say about this following the Walcott news as well.

I think it's a good post as most people will assume that a SARvP front line isn't possible, but with Ramsey it is.

Interesting, would love to bring him back and could well prove to be the differential needed to make huge progress. Having a play around with my team I could put this out:

      Mannone, Davies
      Coleman, Kos, Nasti, Chester, Burner
      Mutch, Hazard, Silva, Eriksen, Ramsey
      Suarez, Aguero, VP

      Hmm, not bad?

How about this for a differential WC team:

    Boruc Davis
    Kolarov Sagna Azpi Bardsley Burner
    Eriksen Oscar Cazorla Dempsey Lallana
    Suarez Negredo Bony

With money in the bank to get Aguero for Negredo

I actually think it could beat the 'template' team 😮 Thoughts?

Some will outscore players on the template team, but others will crash and burn. I think a compromise between the two is the best.

      Kosc over Sagna for baps.
Azpi isn't a bad shout but may be under risk from Ivan.
Kolorav isn't nailed-on and will get too many 1 pointers. Get Nasty
Burner may lose his place to Hudson or a new CB signing
It's too early to get Dempsey in IMO. I'd want to see some form first.

It actually is a differential team so kudos for that.
The art of differentials IMO is to get 2-3 to out perform the mainstream. Going too many differentials risks them cancelling each other out as some will over perform and others will under perform.
Also too many fullbacks, it's about cbs this year.

Hudson is more a CB in the Caulker mode (although not as good) than Burner so if I was calling it I'd say Burner will keep his spot.

As for midfield, that could go any direction. Cowie and Gunnarson started in Ole's only match so far and I really doubt they'll have a part to play with the new signings coming in, so there are no clues to go on. Whittingham looks to be at risk and I'd back Mutch to have the most FPL gains. But I wouldn't put him in the WC team until we've seen more of how they look, at his price you can easily get him in later when the fixtures improve.

Just a thought.....Gameweek 23 deadline will be after the team lineups are announced, which is a huge advantage for people who still have their wildcard. One of those fixtures is Man Utd v Cardiff. If RvP is in the starting XI, the captain armband may go straight on his arm (Suarez has Everton, and Aguero is away to Spurs). Then, the week after RvP can be subbed out for Aguero, so you are back to your template team. I personallt prefer this tactic than keeping money in the back and waiting for Aguero to be fit.

Note: This could also apply to Rooney

Better still, save a FT so that you have 2FT for GW 23.

Take a couple of punts once you see the teams, and then clean it up by activating the WC straight after the GW23 deadline has passed.

Agree. Either Hazard or Suarez for (c) this GW. Stoke have improved their form, especially at home, somewhat over the last 2 months...So could see a few more stray away from locking in Suarez as (c)

Rooney, if declared fit, also becomes a viable (c) option

    Captaincy this week:

Been burnt here before, but think I'm gonna go with Lukaku. Scored in his last game (some form) and Norwich are pretty woeful defensively away from home - 3rd worst for goals conceded, shots conceded in the box and big chances conceded. Should get plenty of opportunities with Baines and Coleman crosses. Turner and Bassong also doubts I believe.

    Anyone with me?

As in Swansea who just beat us? Nah. Our defense is shambolic. Rafael is playing with a chip on his shoulder, Evans is a doubt. Vidic is old and Evra is losing it. Midfield is a joke and Rooney is limping along until RVP is back.

My Ozil-Walcott move in GW17 was a masterstroke, a sign of FPL genius:

      Got Ozil at £10m for GW6 - Total points between GW6 and 17 = 70 - Sold Ozil before GW17. Total points since GW17 = 5

Got Walcott at £9.1m for GW17- Sold for £9.3m. Total points since GW17 = 34

Just got Ozil back in for Walcott at £9.9m.

      Thats what you call playing-the-game.

Playing your Wildcard cancels out the hits you have taken this week.

      Walking on the WC tightrope.

Should I hit the button? 1.5 hrs until Ozil rises to decide.

I did Ozil for -4 but will probably do WC later in the week.

        Leaving myself the option though.

No. A -4 isn't the end of the world. It will be more useful right at the end.

        Acquafresca:

Why not buy Ozil now ....... for the hit & go the whole hog and WC if the situation deteriorates further (starting 11 injuries etc) between here and Friday morning ?

      Interesting:

Liverpool have only beaten Stoke ONCE in their last 6 PL games at the Brittania.

      Livp: 1 win
      Stoke: 3 wins
      Draw: 2

Livp have only scored 4 goals at Brittania in last 6 games.

          Means nothing, I know.

          Just putting it out there.

Who are the alternatives to Capt Suarez though?

Hazard away to Hull? Hull at home are tough.
Ozil away to Villa? His away form is poor.

No Wally, potentially no Roon or Casual Toure... might have to be Silva by default.
