In his first move into the transfer market since taking the reins at Cardiff, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has acquired playmaker Magnus Wolff Eikrem from Dutch club Heerenveen. The 23-year-old arrives in Wales for an undisclosed fee and, having trained with the club over the last few days, was finally given clearance to seal the deal yesterday afternoon:

Speaking to the Bluebirds’ official website, Eikrem revealed he is desperate to make an immediate impact in his new surroundings:

“I can’t wait to get started. I’ve got a big chance now. It’s a massive step from The Eredivisie, but I think I can get us playing and as said, I can’t wait to get started. It’s up to me to show that I’m good enough and to get into the team. But I know I’ll have to work hard as there are a lot of good players here. I’m sure I’ll adapt and that the manager will put his things in place, which I will adapt to as well.”

The History

A product of the Molde youth academy, Eikrem was snapped up by Man United on his sixteenth birthday in 2006 after impressing in one of Solskjaer’s Norwegian “Soccer Schools” in his native Norway.

During his time at Old Trafford, Eikrem helped the club’s youth side to a couple of cup finals before making the step up to the reserve team – which was then managed by Solskjaer. A failure to break into the first-team eventually forced the midfielder back to Molde in January 2011 and, once again under Solskjaer’s guidance, he helped the club to back-to-back league titles, producing six goals and 12 assists from 68 appearances over two-and-a-half seasons.

Eikrem’s displays earned him a move to Dutch outfit Heerenveen on a four-year deal in June last year. During his time in the Eredivise, he played 13 times, scoring twice and providing a pair of assists. The 23-year-old has represented his country at youth level on 17 occasions, scoring once, and has also turned out for the senior side 13 times.

The Prospects

Given that this will be the third time the midfielder has worked under Solskjaer, it’s fair to say the Cardiff boss believes his new acquisition is a real talent. Speaking to the club’s official website yesterday afternoon, Solskjaer summed up just what we can expect from Eikrem:

“I’ve known Magnus for many years, having worked with him at Manchester United and then signing him for Molde. While I was there I had to sell him as he was our best player – and now I feel lucky to get to sign him again for Cardiff City for a reasonable price. I see this as money well spent. He’s a playmaker, a quarterback if you will, someone who likes to get on the ball and can see a pass. He’s technically very good, including set pieces and has great vision. Magnus will add a lot to Cardiff City and will blend in very well with the midfielders in the squad.”

Eikrem is adaptable enough to play in a deep-lying role or even in “the hole” in Solskjaer’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. Potentially, though, the “quarterback” comparison suggests he could sit in the double-pivot alongside a battler such as Gary Medel and be tasked with linking defence and attack via his eye for a killer pass. Certainly, the statistics suggest Eikrem is unlikely to make his way onto Fantasy radars anytime soon, with most content to initially observe and assess whether he is capable of making an impact in the English top-flight.

The new manager’s praise for Eikrem’s set-piece abilities is something of a worry for Peter Whittingham owners, though. The latter has been the Bluebirds’ main man up till now but, with a potential midfield reshuffle on the cards, the local press have even questioned his game time under Solskjaer – a real worry for the 5.3-priced Whittingham, who has played every minute of the season up until now and has produced more points than any midfielder under 7.0.

Certainly, the club’s home schedule offers reason for optimism as the new man in charge looks to climb the table. West Ham, Norwich, Villa and Hull are the next four visitors to the Cardiff City Stadium and, with a trip to neighbours Swansea also on their agenda over the next seven, Solskjaer will be confident of picking up the points.

Whilst Eikrem – who has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League game (4.5 to 5.0 can be expected) and is priced at 4.3 in the Sky Sports game – certainly has his manager’s faith, it’s perhaps best to wait until the transfer window closes until we get an idea of Solskjaer’s plans. Although Whittingham’s prospects may take a dive, Jordan Mutch, with four goals to his name and a price of 4.6, could turn out to be the best route into the Cardiff midfield if he can retain his current starting berth.

I'm going to risk waiting to see how he responds to the injury. He only scored in one of the eight PL games before it too, suggesting that the regression that some predicted was already starting to happen.

He will, of course, bag a couple of hatties while I "wait and see"

You'd imagine so but with an easy game next GW as well he may be eased in potentially. Hard to tell with Wenger. Sometimes he rushes them back and sometimes he eases them in. I think he may favour the latter approach with Walcott already out for the season.

It has one major weakness in that it is only showing shots to goals ratio so does not assess the quality of the shots. In the extreme you have penalty takers who do nothing else and they will have a very high ratio of goals per shot (except Walters). At the other extreme you have Townsend and Mirallas who shoot from all over and where a large proportion of shots are off target.

For me the better ratio would be goals to shots on target where a position like that of Cabaye's in this chart would tend to show someone who was simply unlucky.

I have a presentation tomorrow morning. Urgent meeting while I'm on a holiday. Bugger. And I just got my PS4.

    What should I do

    a) Prepare the presentation tonight, avoid the PS4 and get enough sleep
    b) Play PS4 first then do the presentation. Who needs sleep when you got swag as the young uns say.
    c) Just sleep now, wake up earlier and do the notes
    d) Take a hit and call sick tomorrow and there's a slight chance I'll be fired or at least not a promotion in the near future.
    e) Think of more options
    f) Farm spuds

Rubbish pick early in the season..too slow to put the final ball in and too willing to take a pot shot from range....but we all know that. A new manager might make a big difference to his play both in terms of how he plays and the set up of the team with two forwards...The full backs at Spurs have had their wings clipped a bit (avg position) but I'm not sure how that effects the wingers..I suspect a lot less fannying about out wide with overlaps and a much quicker ball to the forwards...

My son was muttering something about them allowing some sort of backwards compatibility after public outcry about XBox1 potentially not playing the 360 games.

I thought the answer was no……but he is 10…and perhaps more likely to be right.

This article suggest no - but from November…..

I think the FA are getting sweaty under the collar over Moyes' comments. Strange he's got nominated for manager of the month when Rodgers got a fine for similar comments.

You have to admit it was a bit odd that despite being in a perfect position, the referee wouldn't award Evra the penalty despite his assistant calling it.

Moyes said the decisions were bad, Rodgers basically said the ref favoured Man U, and therefore questioned the integrity of the referee. Moyes was pathetic, but I think they dealt with it fairly.

I thought it was 50/50 to be honest, but it wasn't a blatant either way. But Sunderland easily deserved to win that game, and Man U didn't play well. I hate it when managers just blame the refs (and yes Wenger does it too).
Why can't all managers be like Martinez?

    Team A

    Mannone (Davis)
    Coleman-Kos-Cahill (Burner,Ward)
    Lallana-Özil-Hazard-Silva
    Ade-Lukaku-Suarez

itb: 3.3 to get Aguero for Lukaku

More balanced then straight plan for Kun.

    Team B

    Mannone-Davis
    Coleman-Kos-AZPI (Burner,Ward)
    Özil-YAYA-Silva-Hazard (4.1 non playing johnsson)
    Ade-Lukaku-Suarez

itb: 1.2 to get Negredo for Lukaku

Yaya is huge differential in my ml. The con is I ll have 3 City players at gw 22 and have to drop Silva or Yaya to get Aguero.

I dunno. That's history. Need to loo at opponents and alternatives.

Yes, Stoke have injuries...but Suarez has 1 goal and 1 assist in last 3. That's not a lot.

And stoke at home is always tough. Always.

              No risk no reward.

It's time to move up the rankings.

Suarez(c) won't do that for you.

I know I'm not convinced that Suarez will get points, but I'm not more convinced another player will get points, my alternatives would be Negredo, Silva, Hazard or Cazorla, or Rooney if fit.. and with those options I think I will end on Suarez

    hey all,

this is my 3rd WC post, I am averaging one every three days so I hope no one is annoyed I give it another go. This is the midfield heavy draft, with Roo still in as well.

    McGregor, Mannone

    Coleman, Koscielny, Burner, Ward, Chester

    Hazard, Ozil, Silva, Eriksen, Lallana

    Suarez, Rooney, Campbell

Burner and Ward rotate great as a 3rd DEF, Campbell not sexy but until Cardiff sign another striker, he's nailed on and he will always be a bench option. All the big clubs are represented. McGregor/Mannone isnt the best road/away combo, but its a long time until both have a really poor fixture in the same week. .1 leftover in the bank, .2 once I turn a profit on Sagna before the deadline.

    Thoughts?

yeah i dont expect anyone to gush over campbell, but he is what he is, a cheap bench option that plays minutes.

1 every 3 days is not as bad as some serial selfish posters.....would recomend getting 3rd striker who is worth playing and not going for a frontline of 2 strikers...any plans for aguero?

yeah, downgrade the worst performing mid once aguero is fit, I should have 2 FTs saved up if i stick to my gut with this lot and im not crushed by injuries. i understand it is the norm to have an everyweek 3rd striker vs 5th mid, and I wouldnt roll with a 3-5-2 all year, but right now, with form, fixtures, injuries, prices, and everything else considered, i might gain a bit of ground in the ranks going against the norm.

But the 9m range midfielders seem to be performing more consistently than similar price ranged forwards. Lets see if Giroud/Sturr/lukaku can change that

Any Ramsey plans for his return? I think he's good to replace a premium mid whilst being a midrange price which allows more cash into attack

its a wait and see, i would be more inclined to go ozil->rambo if rambo appears to be the same player before injury. Im still skeptical about his talent and wonder if we saw a few months from hi that will never be repeated.

Assuming that most will go with three big hitting midfielders....

Which do you think is a better strategy:

    A) 1 mid priced MF, 1 cheap MF, 2 cheap DFs

    B) 2 cheap MFs, 2 mid priced DFs and 1 cheap DF

id rather have B because it involves 5 players vs 4 😉

As you see above, I am looking to spend in MF, with the state of strikers right now, Im ok going with a 3-5-2.

    Mannone Marshall
    Kos Coleman Vlaar MOlsson Chester
    Hazard Silva Gerrard Cabaye Januzaj
    Suarez Augero Hooper

The plan is to rotate Januzaj and Hooper (3-5-2 and 3-4-3). Do they rotate well? Thanks

Is RVP, when fit, worth 13.6m, when Suarez is also fit?

On form, Suarez is captain reliable this season, and even if RVP scores around the same PPG as last year for the remainder of this year, would he be worth it?

I'm thinking no, the outlay is just too large. But then again, he is world class, and world class players tend to do well in FPL (Simple logic I know :D)

I made a relatively long post on RVP WC teams which essentially suggested you can go Silva, Hazard, Ramsey + 2 other MFs, as well as Suarez, Aguero and RVP up front with a decent defence too. It's certainly food for thought.

I agree Bryan - RVP is not worth 13.6m

As good as he is - one has to factor -in the team dynamic - United's current disposition is deplorable. Past achievements do not factor anymore. In all honesty having United playing at home (and even against lesser opposition) is no longer a guaranteed goal-fest. Lesser opponents are emboldened by Uniteds current shambolic set-up. Unless ManU buy big over the next few weeks - this is likely to get worse.

I never liked Ferguson as a person - but he was an amazing manager - Moyes has drunk deeply from the poison chalice - ......... and its fun to watch !
