Daniel Sturridge bags a brace as Liverpool hammer injury-hit Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield. Robin van Persie notches upon his return from injury as Juan Mata bags an assist on his United debut. Jason Puncheon, Adam Lallana and Santi Cazorla continue their recent scoring exploits, though the Gunners suffer a setback as Aaron Ramsey is ruled out again with a calf injury:

SAS Star in Derby Demolition
Top of the Captain Poll going into last night’s Merseyside derby, Luis Suarez returned yet another set of double figures as Liverpool swept aside their neighbours in near-embarrassing fashion. Interestingly, Daniel Sturridge equalled Suarez’s 11-point haul in the 4-0 victory, and only missed out on outshining his strike partner by sending a second half penalty flying into the stands. Sturridge, at a full 4.0 cheaper than Suarez, continued his scoring run since his return from injury with a neatly-taken brace and is making a convincing case for inclusion alongside his Uruguayan team-mate in our three-man frontlines.

Lukaku Injury Poses Problems for Martinez
Everton’s woeful night was summed up by the loss of the big Belgian only 20 minutes into the match. Reports suggest that the loanee sustained ankle ligament damage and could be poised for a spell on the sidelines – post-match, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez was a little pessimistic:

“We’re going to assess it. At the moment he’s got his ankle in a cast and it doesn’t look too good. He just collided with Gareth Barry at the corner as the ball was delivered into the box. It’s there where he twisted his ankle.”

Lukaku has undoubtedly gone off the boil in recent weeks, but even his loyal owners will now be scouring the market in search of a replacement for the 8.5-priced striker if scans do indeed rule him out. Everton, meanwhile, find themselves in a sticky situation. With Arouna Kone and new signing Lacina Traore still out of action Martinez has a conundrum in front of him, although Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas, classified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), do offer options in the forward position. The Belgian led the line in last weekend’s FA Cup win over Stevenage and, at 7.2, has some eye-catching home fixtures (AVL, CPL, WHM, CAR, SWA) on his agenda over the next eight Gameweeks.

Van Persie and Rooney Return as Mata Hits the Ground Running
Both Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney made their comebacks from injury last night, as United picked up a comfortable 2-0 victory against Cardiff. The former started the game and notched for the fifth time in his last six starts, whilst Rooney managed the last half hour after being brought on as a substitute – despite scoring six times in the last six, Danny Welbeck didn’t even make the bench as David Moyes rolled out the big guns.

Whilst the return of Rooney and Van Persie would normally be news enough for the Red Devils’ fans, the big story on the night was Juan Mata’s first appearance in a United shirt. Moyes handed the Spaniard a starting berth at the expense of Adnan Januzaj, and Mata duly returned an assist for his new team and the 190,000 managers who acquired his services for this Gameweek. With van Persie, Rooney and Mata back in the frame for the Champions, the trio could yet make a major impact on our Fantasy seasons and pose plenty of problems for those loading up on City and Liverpool’s premium assets. Having played for Chelsea in the Champions League already this season, Mata is ineligible for United, thus boosting his chances of domestic appearances.

After the match, Moyes seemed more convivial than usual and went on to discuss Mata’s fitness and versatility going forward:

“I was a little bit worried about how his overall match fitness would be, but when we got to 2-0 I thought the longer I kept it on and gave him more minutes hopefully it would get him up to speed quickly….We know that we will use Juan in different positions and we will get used to him over the coming weeks and months. I can play him in any role. I can play him off the left, I can play him off the right which allows me to keep Robin and Wayne as a partnership, I am quite comfortable with that, and if at any times I need him to do another job, No 10, he is quite capable of doing that.”

Cazorla in the Goals Again as Gunners Suffer Ramsey Setback
While Mesut Ozil served up an assist to put the brakes on his Fantasy decline, the summer signing was left in the shade by his Spanish team-mate once again. Cazorla is clearly on a roll now – a double against Fulham in the previous Gameweek was followed by a strike in the FA Cup win over Coventry and he delivered yet again at St Mary’s last night to continue his ascent up the Fantasy rankings. With a home game against Palace up next, he looks poised for considerable investment over the next few days, though, with Liverpool and United directly after the Eagles clash, some will be deterred from loading up on Arsene Wenger’s side.

Mathieu Flamini is set to miss that trio of fixtures after a two-footed lunge on compatriot Morgan Schneiderlin at St Mary’s earned him a four-match ban – he will also miss the FA Cup clash with Liverpool- whilst Arsenal’s central midfield worries escalated after their manager confirmed Aaron Ramsey has picked up a problem in training, just a day after he was passed fit to return from a calf complaint:

“Aaron Ramsey is out for longer than we expected because he had a little setback in training yesterday. So I couldn’t bring him here. It’s the same muscle he did a bit again so we have to be cautious this time…Hopefully he’s not out too long but he won’t be available for Sunday’s game [against Crystal Palace].”

Lallana’s Home Comforts
Despite producing a goal or assist in four of the six league matches prior to last night, the Southampton skipper was sold by over 60,000 FPL managers as Arsenal rolled up to St Mary’s. Those who jumped ship were made to pay for their impatience as Lallana grabbed a goal and maximum bonus points in the 2-2 draw, taking his tally to 114 points for the season – third highest midfielder behind only Yaya Toure and Eden Hazard. With games against Fulham, Stoke, Hull and West Ham in the next four, his consistency looks set to continue – from Gameweek 5 onwards, the 7.6-priced Lallana has produced attacking returns in 10 of 19 appearances, with double-figure hauls in five of his last nine home matches.

Bony Blanks in Swans Triumph
Subject to increased investment after notching six times in his previous five across all competitions, the Ivorian failed to justify his upturn in ownership against Fulham last night. Bony served up no more than a single point return for his owners after picking up a booking in the 2-0 win, as Chico and fit-again Jonjo Shelvey grabbed a goal apiece. Shelvey, at 5.4, is now up to four goals and four assists for the season, whilst Chico’s 15-point haul takes him 10 points clear of any other Swansea backline option. With West Ham, Cardiff, Stoke and Palace in the next five, Michael Laudrup’s side could well be worth consideration as decent budget options.

Puncheon Delivers Again at Fortress Selhurst Park
The wide-man notched for the third successive home game to secure another vital win for Palace against fellow promoted club Hull. We’d highlighted Puncheon in last week’s KPI Midfielder form analysis article and he served up yet another eye-catching display – it’s three sets of consecutive double-figure hauls in front of his own fans now, with last night’s display surely set to persuade more to shell out for the 4.9-priced Eagles man.

The 1-0 win means Tony Pulis’ side have now produced a clean sheet in five of the last seven at Selhurst Park and, with West Brom their next visitors in Gameweek 25, another shut-out looks on the cards. For those eyeing up Palace defenders, it’s worth noting that Palace have yet to play host to United, Southampton, Chelsea, City and Liverpool, though, suggesting the defensive returns may be a little harder to come by over the run-in.

McGregor Sent Packing for Tigers
The Hull stopper received his marching orders in the dying minutes of the Palace loss after lashing out at Stuart O’Keefe. At present, McGregor – who is owned by over 8% of FPL managers – looks likely to be facing a three-match ban, which would see him miss home games with Spurs and Southampton, with a trip to Sunderland sandwiched in between, to return on February 22. Steve Bruce admitted after the game that he may appeal the decision, though, leaving the Scot’s owners awaiting further news, with Steve Harper (4.0) set to benefit if McGregor, as expected, is suspended by the FA.

Johnson and Remy Clash Heads and See Red
It would be fair to say that it was a day to forget for Newcastle fans. With Yohan Cabaye now odds-on to depart before the end of the transfer window, things were already looking bad, but add to that a goalless draw at Carrow Road and the dismissal of top scorer Loic Remy and Alan Pardew doesn’t have his problems to seek ahead of the weekend Tyne-Wear derby. The French striker frustrated the 17,000 managers who transferred him in for this Gameweek by being dismissed late on in the second half for a clash with Norwich’s Bradley Johnson – the 8.1-priced man will now miss his side’s next three Premier League fixtures (SUN, che, TOT) and is out of action for almost a month. Johnson, also sent off following the melee between the two opponents, had played every minute of the Canaries’ last nine fixtures before yesterday’s game, but is now also set to miss a trio of upcoming matches.

    Hello All,

    * Very Long Post Alert*

I had some free time on my hands so I decided to make a small guide for those Wildcarding this gameweek (me)
    or generally those planning ahead.

So what is my take on the upcoming fixtures?

    Overall Prospects

First let me take a look at the European matches

    CL
    City & ARS (between 26 & 27 and 29 & 30)

This one has special effect on City's easy fixtures (SUN, STO, AVL, hul) and
can bring many a fantasy manager into tears. I would abandon the City ship by GW 26, probably only keeping Yaya,
as he seems least rotation prone. Jump back on the City wagon in 30 on your own risk or 31 for the rest
    of the season.
Arsenal has a load of tough fixtures combined with the CL can be deadly. I don't expect many fantasy
points from them between 25 and 30.

    Chelsea and MUN (between 27 & 28 and 30 & 31)

The have considerably easier CL opponents so we might not see as much rotiation,
they also play their first matches away, so with good results they might not be so keen
on resting players in the league.
Especially United have really good fixtures and with the DGW , I would see an investement
potential. As for Chelsea, I am really wary of them besides Hazard and Terry.

Tottenham and Swansea (between 26, 27 and 28)

Swansea has terrible fixtures in this period with only a home match
against CPL looking nice, stay away. Even if they don't go further in the EL , their fixtures are dire.
Tottenham has easier fixtures so is worth investing in, Eriksen or Adebayor should
be the limit of your investement though.

    Future matches

EL - Tottenham would play the winner of PAOK/Benfica and Swansea the winner of Porto/Frankfurt.
    Matches played between 29 &30 and 30 & 31.
Tottenham has bad fixtures around this time, so please monitor.

    CL - Quarters are played between GWs 32 & 33 and 33 & 34
    Semis are played between GWs 35 & 36 and 36 & 37
EL - same as CL, the final is right after GW 38 so if Tottenham/Swansea is in, could affect them.

I did not have the time or will power to analyse the FA cup, the league cup we
are all hopefully aware of the fact that City, United, Sunderland and
West Brom have a blank 28 and City & United a DGW 31.

    The remaining teams prospects

Aston Villa - looking at their fixtures Benteke is a very tempting option.
Cardiff - really good fixtures, so once Ole finds his first team, worth investing
Crystal Palace - has up and down fixtures, but as a back up player they are worth it.
Everton - Tot and Che away in the next 7 but besides that still a good option.
Fulham - Don't go there, with the fixtures they have they would really need a miracle not
to be relegated but if they survive to GW 36 they could be a end-season punt.
Hull - Fairly ok fixtures, similar to Crystal Palace
Liverpool - Great fixtures, with only Arsenal and United being threats. Suarez day will
again be celebrated at Norwich in GW 35.
Newcastle - If Cabaye leaves I cannot really see another fantasy option, maybe Remy, their fixtures are fairly ok.
Norwich - I don't give them many chances, the season run-in is extremely bad as well.
Southampton - very pleasant fixtures for the most part, Lallana , Rodriguez, Boruc, etc. Many options here.
Stoke - a lot of tough home games, so probably not worth consideration, under some circumstances can even end up
    relegated.
Sunderland - Some of their fixtures are really good ,altough they do have their share of tough ones.
West Brom - As we don't fully know how Mel wants to play them I would monitor, towards the end of the season
    they have some bad fixtures.
West Ham - short term - great fixtures, long term it is much less appealing.

    Title Race:

Chelsea seem to have the best fixtures as well as an ok draw in the CL.
Arsenal has a hellish period between 26 and 34 with only 2 matches not seeming hard, however
if they survive this period they have a pretty good run-in. If they get knocked out of the
    CL it can prove helpful
City - while not as bad a schedule as ARsenal they do have some very tricky matches in the same
    period. Better chances than Arsenal.
Liverpool - Good fixturesand playing the top teams at home, under certain circumstances can
be a dark horse. Also with the fixtures I would probably stay away from the defense.
United - they actually have decent fixtures coming up and if the Mata factor jumps in and Rooney and RVP
jump aboard they can climb the ranking.
Tottenham - as they have a good bench, can't see the EL being a big problem and their fixtures give them the chance
    to surprise.
Everton -I find their fixtures too tricky to make an impact on the title race, but can easily challenge Europe.

    Relegation

Fulham - terrible fixtures, they ease towards the end but it might be too late
Norwich - Not the best fixtures and a killer ending to the season
    Cardiff- surprisingly ok fixtures
Sunderland - mixed bunch of fixtures could go both ways..
Crystal Palace - they have decent fixtures
Hull- tougher fixtures than the rest, can be in trouble
Swansea - with the fixtures they have and the EL they might be drawn into the fight.
West Ham - their short term fixtures are decent, long term it might leave them around the zone.
Stoke - pretty bad fixtures, can see them having issues.

    Last Notes:

City might have mouth-watering fixtures, but don't forget rotation and the blank game week.
If you want cheap defenders then go Cardiff, Crystal, Hull, Aston Villa and to a lesser extent Sunderland.
Southampton players might prove to be the value they were at the beginning of the season.
Do not buy Swansea players, I really fear their upcoming fixtures.
Arsenal has some tough times ahead, careful with their players.

Sorry for the long post, just love this site and wanted to contribute with something
    semi-useful 🙂

It depends on how long/short term you plan.

Fixturewise /rotation Lallana seems a really good option, if Benteke can replicate at least 50% of his last years form then him as well.

Then there are the obvious ones like Suarez, Yaya, Terry, Hazard.

I would be slightly cautious on City and Arsenal players, the CL can mess up a lot for them

I think there's a danger you will fall behind without Aguero. I think Silva is dispensable though, even though I have him myself.

I haven't had him yet this season, although was thinking about him on the WC.
Still managed to get into top 20k 🙂

I think Suarez is more important, City scores so many goals that there is a number of players which could cover at least 50-75% of Aguero's points I guess.

        Thanks!

I just double-checked and I have to agree with you, but on the other hand their first four aren't the best either. But as a backup mid/def they could work. Maybe Hooper as a slightly crazy punt (considering the options up front)

Looks good, you could downgrade Eriksen to Noone and rotate him with Puncheon.
This would give you £4m to upgrade your defence.

If you have him play him. However, im still not convinced about his away form - his stats are noticably different home vs away - and he's got a lot of away games coming up.

I think he'll nail down the LB role, not too much competition there really. Caulker and Theophile are nailed when fit, so the real question is Hudson or Turner. Not sure Ole's mind is made up there.

After last nights awful last minute transfer of Rodriguez > Bony I've decided the best way to win my mini league is to just match up with the leader knowing that my greater value will allow me better players in the remaining positions.

So I've done Bony & Silva > Sturridge & Mata to match up with him.

    We now both have:

Boruc, Coleman, Hazard, Mata, Suarez & Sturridge

    The remaining slots:

    He has - I have

    Davis - Mannone

    Sagna - Mertesacker
    Olsson - Bardsley
    Williamson - Gabbidon
    Figueroa - Chester

    Eriksen - Oscar
    Lallana - Johnson

    Benteke - Aguero

Will maybe even match up with Eriksen and in 2-3 weeks Johnson will become Ramsey.

      Sagna - Mert - Check
      Olsson - Bardsley - Check
      Williamson - Gabbidon - Check
      Figueroa - Chester - Hm.

      Eriksen - Oscar - Check.
Lallana - AJ - Check, hopefully!

      Tekkers - Aguero - Check.

      Looks good for your case.

Yup Chester needs moving on, will look at Winston Reid I think when I have a spare transfer.

I'm not as confident about the midfield, I would say that Eriksen - Oscar is even or maybe slightly in Eriksens favor in his current form.

Lallana - AJ could go either way for me but if AJ goes to Ramsey I think I have him there as well.

Did Silva to Mata last night due to his price change.

    Main reasons are

    1. He will be fresher
    2. At new club so renewed motivation
    3. Less injury prone

The 2 factors for Silva were playing in a superior team and a run of home fixtures.

Overall I feel mats will score better though

Best defender to bring in for Chester to rotate with Kos/Azpi/Ward until Coleman gets back?

Can afford more or less anyone, but don't really want to go over 4.5 or so for a rotating defender. Currently leaning towards Flanagan.
